- Had the honor of sitting down with an American gentleman who moved his wife and 3 kids to to Serbia! Paul is originally from the great state of Texas. He met a Serb from Novi Sad on some tech job site, hired him , came to check out Novi Sad, loved it, opened a business here and moved his whole family over here! He had nothing but glowing things to say about Serbia, Serbs and the beautiful city of Novi Sad!

My wife and I are also considering moving to Serbia. It seems to be a nation with pride and strength, two qualities I admire.

Do not come. There are very few business opportunities here, and salaries are very low-professors and surgeons have monthly salaries in 400-600 dollar range. People here, including closest relatives, are unlikely to help you when you are in trouble. Life in Serbia is so miserable that every year 40000 Serbians emigrates out of country. I would leave Serbia today if I had an opportunity to find decent job in another country. Most Serbian would do the same if they had an opportunity.
Blue Man Are you dumb ? They are not looking for money, they are looking for strength and pride.
No Can Can, I do not tell you this because I am dumb, I tell you because I am clever and I see that soon great crisis and depression like in 1929 will spread worldwide. In such situation all will inevitably be forced to turn to finantial survival, not to pride and strenght. And Serbia will be hit hard in this crisis and I do not know how this family will survive in Serbia. And I am fed up with stories about proud and strenghtfull Serbians. In practise most Serbians are conformists who voted for dictators like Slobodan Milosevic because he enabled them lifelong-employment and other benefits they enjoyed in communist times, not for pride and strenght. Pride and strenght are not priorities of people in Serbia, its people now wants to join EU just to make more money.
I moved to Serbia about 2 1/2 years ago after living 10 years in Portugal. So far I'm quite pleased. Presently riding a motorcycle on a 4500+ mile 3-4 week trip through southern Europe. Heading towards Turin, Italy today on my way home. I've lived in many places around the US, West Africa and Europe. Serbia, so far, seems to fit my life best.
But Blue Man has the right idea. Keep running down life in Serbia and that'll make others want to move elsewhere. Will keep the life in Serbia unchanged longer. Good move Blue Man.

*”GOSTOPRIMSTVO” is in every Serbians DNA......it is difficult to convey in words, but basically it is a type of Welcoming that goes above and way beyond the typical standard. Where others shake hands a Serbian will embrace you. An American friend of mine told me that “Anyone who has the good fortune of being embraced in friendship by a Serbian, will quickly come to know what true loyalty and sincere compassion means within a friendship”.*

@micssr *You are correct. Hospitality (Hospitalitet) is a word that more suitably relates to the Hotel and Restaurant service industry. Whereas “Gostoprimstvo” is legendary in Serbia, as it is a deeply rooted Serbian tradition that has been traced far back into our antiquity. The Serbian saying: “Gost je Svetinja” is translated into English as: “The Guest is Sacrosanct”......this means that a Guest of a Serb (in addition to being embraced in a welcoming fashion)....is coming under the protection and care of their Serbian Host.... This long respected Tradition is taken very seriously by the Serbian people....because GOSTOPRIMSTVO is directly linked to (both the individual and collective) Honor of the Serbian People.*
*When it comes to the protection of Honor......a Serb tends to react a bit like a “Samurai”, 😉 lol.......I mean...Serbs are somewhat allergic to the word SRAMOTA (Shame)...so much so, that we practically break out in hives when we hear it....*
Gest liked to be welcomed is how you will translate GOSTOPRIMSTVO, being totally different from the etymological background of hospitality. Hospitality sounds like you are doing it because you have to or you expect something in return... So you did it, right man!

For job purposes, I have travelled and worked in many EU countries.
For money purpose, it was ok. But over time, I realised the freedom that I was missing and that I was living in Novi Sad, because I was born and raised in Novi Sad.
So, I guess there are things that money just can't buy.

Good on him. Brave move but I'm sure it's worth it. 19 people (maybe more now), IT biz (small sites, marketing, SEOs), most likely overseas clients, and living in Serbia where cost of living is lower. Great combo!

Charles, here in Serbia, young people are having a lot of trouble starting their own business, so, could you make a series of videos that talk, step by step, about how to start a business? You can do it with people that already started their business :) That would be a great project that can actually make a change and maybe keep some young people from leaving the country :D

pa da brate thats what in normal countries some govermental institutions should do..but not in Serbia ,lack of transparency on every level..
and maybe more videos for people on who want to make a move..regarding getting a drivers license..and more detail on opening the biz.
Too much bureaucracy left over from communist times, and everyone has to be greased every step of the way..
I live in Chicago, two weeks ago it happened that I had to get emergency care. The total hospital bill was $ 12,000 I almost throw up after I saw. I stayed in hospital approximately 3 hours.
I am so sorry this happened to you! Hopefully that is not the final bill after any insurance.

I am amazed at what this guy has to say about the work ethic. Either he's the best manager ever or he's living in a different reality than what I experienced working in IT in Belgrade.
My wife, son, and I visited Novi Sad on a day trip from Belgrade in 2017. What a charming place and and indelible impression! We want to go back and feel it out as a possible retirement destination.

Great interview Charles and my hats off to Paul. Two great issues that I'd like to touch on. Medical costs in the USA can easily bankrupt you(even with insurance) and the quality of the doctors here is not that great. It's all about you coming back and making more money for the institution. My sons have both been misdiagnosed many times by US doctors and at a lot of urgent care places you don't even see a doctor but they charge crazy prices. The other issue is white flight and the suburbs that make you reliant on cars and fuel and driving. We don't have nice city centers, most inner cities are dangerous ghettos that white people don't want any part of and the schools there are awful. You will never have safe walkable inner city streets in the USA. That's why I liked Serbia when visiting. You can walk around and not worry about your safety.
American people are very welcome in Serbia, you are most welcome to come and stay any time. Serbia and United States have been friends and partners and allies since the early 1880s and have been on the same side of history! Welcome dear friends 🇷🇸🇺🇲🇷🇸🇺🇲

When i was in USA I was really amazed buy the size of buildings, cars, trucks and some people. One advice, get a mic and you will get better sound quality.

By ancient Serbian customs and beliefs (before Christianity, in pagan times) guests are sent to us by our Serbian ancestors and you treat your guests as you would treat your great great grandfather or grandmother coming to your home. The most welcomed guests should be total strangers that come unannounced, because they as well might be the spirit of your ancestor coming to visit.

BTW Arlington TX is the largest city in the US without any public transportation system at all. You have to have a car there. They try to make Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff more like Europe outdoor markets but it's only that way small parts of the year.
Great American people. I am Serbian, living in Canada and I always had fun traveling in USA. People are nice and very friendly :) I only visited warm states Arizona, Florida, Nevada, California, Texas....lol...we have enough cold in Canada, not interested in cold states...:)

I wish you made it even longer. :) The fact that he moved together with the family over here is amazing. I don't know how old are his children, but it would also be interesting to hear how did they fit in, do they attend an English speaking school etc. All the best to Paul and his family and you, of course!

I'm turning 43 this month and when I was in school we had English from 4th grade in elementary school, now kids have English basically from preschool. And this is not optional. I follow Charles from the beginning, best luck to you both here. Yes, the unemployment is still a No1 problem here, then the monthly wage, corruption in all levels of the government, almost dictatorship regime... A lot of people are leaving Serbia because of all that and I hope that things will be better here at least for my children.
The cheapest IT worker in Belgrade is like 1500-2000 EUR/mth. The average developer who is really a junior but bills out as a seasoned developer is like 2-2.5k/mth. No one in IT makes 300 EUR a month.
Oh, my...You guys just warmed this 50+ cat with this!!! Great to hear so many nice and good things about Serbia from regular, ordinary American fellers like you two are... really amazing and heartwarming, if I may say so! BTW...Novi Sad and Vojvodina, geographically speaking are not Balkans, but under the heavy Balkan influences lately... and no doubt that Americans (especially southerners) like it...because, by my personal point of view, Vojvodina is some sort of shrunk version of the USA (below the Dixon line)...with Serbs as the majority but including dozens of other nationalities... it makes a certain feeling pretty much hard to explain! Even the accent (slow and protracted) might be compared to the Southern US States...
Our annoying bureaucracy here is probably a problem to the good part of natives and I'm afraid to imagine even how it reflects on the people from other areas, where it is (at least by reputation) bureaucracy somewhat more coherent than ours! Nu... that's how it is and it bothers you until you get used to it!!!
It would be ludicrous to tell someone they can't be in a restaurant in Serbia just because they brought children with them.
Excellent discussion and covered lots of good points. But the room is a bit echoey. Maybe you need a better room for audio quality or separate mics/channels for people.
