Which are the BEST 10 PLACES to Live/Retire to in the Philippines?

  • Where is the best place to live or retire to in the Philippines? I read this question a lot online, particularly on FB. And I don’t spend much time on Facebook, but every time I look, another person has posted the same question, with commenters putting in their dollar’s worth with where they live whilst others are saying I’m not telling you, this place is perfect and I don’t need it to be overrun with annoying expats thanks very much.
I’ve spent almost 4 years living in the Philippines, have visited the majority of major cities, plus a handful of smaller islands and beach areas, so I’ve built up a pretty good picture of what different places offer. Which ever place I’ve visited in the Philippines, I’d always think - Could I live Here? And whether the place fulfills all my requirements…… such as Alfresco bars/diners, parks, open spaces. Is it safe? Easily walkable? Not too polluted, dirty or busy with traffic? Is an Airport close? How is the public transportation? Are there condos on offer at around $300 per month that come with pool and decent gym? The proximity to a good Beach. That doesn’t consist of volcanic black sand.
Firstly you need to decide whether you’re a city or provincial person. Whilst researching online you’ll hear the same ideal places to live mentioned over again such as CEBU, BOHOL, CDO, DAVAO, DUMAGUETE, BACOLOD, ILOILO, BORACAY, CAMIGUIN and MANILA.
Philippines has over 7,000 islands. Do you like a big Asian city such as Cebu city rather than the province? Which are the Best Islands or Cities to Live? Low cost of living, diversity, culture, weather, food, scenery, long visas entice foreigners to live in the Philippines. Filipinos are welcome and warm people. Filipinos are often regarded as the most friendliest nation in Asia and nicest people in the world. English is widely spoken throughout the country. The Philippines is included in the top ten English speaking countries in the world. The majority of Filipinos are highly proficient in English, so it is very easy to strike up a conversation and make new friends, but so last century. When you're there you feel like you're stuck in an 80s/90s time warp with the old skool music blaring out and the outdated infrastructure.
Cebu is a vibrant Asian city and favorite travel destination in Asia. Cebu has the best of both world - combining the city life of shopping malls and nightlife with beaches and paradise islands. The Philippines should be on everyone’s bucket list with its beautiful white sand beaches, fabulous idyllic islands, turquoise sea and stunning scenery. The Philippines is a traveller’s paradise and regularly included in top ten favorite places to visit in Asia and affordable, favorite world holiday destination.
Many foreigners/expats choose the Philippines as the best country to retire in Asia and live in paradise. The Philippines is one of the cheapest countries to live in the world with its low cost of living and all year sunshine. Retiring in the Philippines is affordable on a budget of less than $1000 pcm.

Easy for me, I pick Cebu City because of the just right feel to it. Good hospitals, international airport, great beach resorts, good enough night life, women who are more accessible, more friendly, great transportation, cheaper condos and quick to get out of the city if you want to travel. If you are 60 years on up, you want to live closer to these things. Live on a remote island or too far away from major hospitals=plan on dying early. My wife and I live 7 miles north from Ayala Mall in Cebu City but with a country feel to it. Close enough but far enough away=just right for us.

Sure, Cebu ticked lots of similar boxes for me. Was planning on finding a condo in Manila for 6 months and quickly realised it was more hassle than I'd had in Cebu. Might give Cebu another go in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Based on your musings, you'd probably be living in Iloilo City, where you will have all the amenities of a big city (including museums, health care, shopping, etc., the charm of a provincial city (less traffic and more nature), the benefits of a livable city (parks, bike lanes, jogging paths, etc.), and from where you can easily jump off to prime beach destinations such as Boracay, Sicogon, Gigantes, and Palawan. Yes. It's easier to get to Palawan from Iloilo than from Manila by ship.

CDO sounds like a good all rounder to me. It's an easy ferry ride from Cebu (int'l airport) and rent is more affordable. Mindanao is also the main supplier of produce for the country so it's more affordable. Filipino food lacks veg and fruit options I'm my opinion. Thanks for the hard work. Enjoyed the video.

  • @timsretirementjourney8323

I've spent time in most of the places in this video (other than Mindanao) but I still prefer the City of San Fernando, Pampanga where we chose to live. I just believe the weather is better here (very little rain compared to most other areas) and the proximity to everything I want is great. I can also find any kind of food I crave here.

Cool video. I'm choosing Thailand for the next year but I have many Filipino friends one who has told me that I should either live in Iloilo City or Cebu and definitely check out Boracay. She's one of the smartest people I know so for me that's where I would go. Maybe after a year in Bangkok I'm a head over to the Philippines. It will depend on whether or not I can wrap my head around learning enough thai to feel comfortable.
I love all the Filipino people I have met. I even have some in my family. But as an atheist I don't think that many Catholic women would be comfortable with me, while Buddhist won't care. Don't be an a-hole just be a good person. I do appreciate your videos and your perspective.

Well -- shopping malls for Filipinos are for the free ac - is my guess - and the social connecting from being around so many people I also suspect ? - - - ''You'' require a bigger city like Manila - having been spoiled by London. - - - A relaxed retirement is what appeals to most other people who could care less about art museums and the like ? A peaceful swim in the ocean @ Bacong is enjoyable to many. Valencia is a relaxed peaceful area with cooler temps. - - - There is no "perfect" place - they all have trade offs. - - - A place with plenty to do nearby -&- easy access to Manila's Airport is - what - '''you''' need !!!!!!!!! 🤔

Lots of people doesn't make a big city, now does it? Neither does a lot of high rise. You point it out quite nice, but you are still surprised by the one dimensional culture, with its superficial friendliness. Enjoy the chaos and keep your sanity. Your inspiration seems to keep you in place. Go for the novel you always wanted to write. Find a quiet place, take time off and contemplate. And do it.

When you say a certain city doesn't have much going for it. I assume that you mean the non tourist/underdeveloped citys.
Thats the trade off you have to decide on. Do you want a place like Thailand which has alot going for it in terms of things to do etc but unfortunately the women are more modernised.
Or somewhere like Philippines which is less developed but women are generally more traditional.
As soon as Philippines becomes more modern the women will go down hill. That's why manila isn't as good as cebu.
Alot of Filipinas in manila have that independent woman( i don't need a man) attitude.

You are indeed a 'fussy bugger' - for a place to live ! --- My conclusion is that there is no perfect or ideal place for you to live / retire......you require a constant variety and stimulus that no one place offers really ? - - - That means movement and an ongoing search for it ! -- Your certainly not ready to retire - rather slow travel and in search of it - is more like what I see. -- So perhaps you need to keep on moving while others relax and truly enjoy - living / retired ? 🤔 👌 🤞 👍 👎 🤏 ✌ 👀🍺

@@KC-in9px But, i remember taking a Grab to the bus station in Manila with my Filipina girlfriend on the way to Bicol. at the bus station, a man on the sidewalk spoke to our driver in Tagalog. The Grab driver did speak english, but he suddenly spoke to my girlfriend in tagalog. I had no idea what they were saying for a while. Finally, my girlfriend told me our scheduled bus was picking us up at a different station and he would need me to pay him in cash to get to the other bus station. We did catch our bus at a different station. I am learning Tagalog, but have a long way to go. Tthe Filipinos know English and makes things easier for us english speakers. But, it is possible to get into situations where knowing Tagalog is helpful. I grew up in a bilingual family, so I don’t mind learning a new language at the age of 60.
