- Shoe tying tutorial for the “Standard Shoelace Knot”, also known as the “Bunny Rabbit Knot” or “One Loop Shoelace Knot” or simply the “Bowknot”. Make a loop with one end, wrap the other end around and pull a loop through the “hole” in the middle.
Shows how to tie it correctly either right-handed or left-handed to produce a “balanced” knot that sits straight and stays secure.

Professor. I'm 25 and u just taught me how to do it for the first time....
That's great, I'm really pleased that you managed to learn from this video. Congratulations, Joey.
Same 😂😂
Never got taught how to tie my laces, always used to to the bunny ears method just from learning what worked, this is the first time I've done it right and I can't explain how thankful I am, something so simple I never imagined being able to learn at this age. Thank you so much, for being the parent I needed
You're welcome, Lex. I'm pleased to have helped you learn how to tie your shoes correctly.
Don’t normally comment on videos but I always used the bunny ear method but wanted to do this method, tried a few other videos but only this seemed to click. It actually made the other videos click as well. May sound silly but thank you so much
Not silly at all! Everyone has different teaching and learning styles, and our respective styles must have been a better match. I'm pleased to hear that you managed to make the switch to this shoelace knot. Congratulations!
This is great! sir. I need to learn this. Thank you.
You're most welcome. Good luck with learning the knot.
bro i’ve been looking everywhere how to do that part where you make the 2nd loop. But this one was different! This guys truly amazing!
Thanks, I'm pleased to hear that my explanation covered what you were missing.
After 20 years on this Earth, I have finally learned this method. Thank you professor!
Great stuff - congratulations! You've learned it early enough in life that those years “wasted” with the old method will soon be a distant memory.
That proper lacing is so satisfying! And good tutorial!
Thanks! I'm pleased that it worked for you.
A big Dankeschoen from Germany! Your video probably saved my life. My shoelaces always came open on the stairs. The danger of falling was inevitable. I have learned the Ian Fieggen knot in less than 5 minutes. No more bending over and tying up again and again ...
“Nicht zu danken” from Australia. I'm pleased to have given you some life-saving (or at the very least life-changing) advice. May your shoes always stay securely tied.
Thanks man you helped me too much at this ❤
You're welcome, I'm pleased that my video helped you to learn the knot. Congratulations!
I was so stoked when i finally got the hang of it and learned how to do it at a faster pace.
I always did the "bunny ear method" because thats what my parents taught me. Since im only twelve i was able to learn it faster than i thought i would, but although at first i was so confused about the whole loop process and kept failing getting the knot tight i eventually got it after like an hour.
Thanks alot professor! 😄
You're most welcome, and thanks for sharing your detailed account. The process of learning is always tricky. Glad that you persisted and got it in the end. With practice, it will soon be both faster and tighter.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, because I've been wondering how to do this.
You're welcome!
17 and finally accomplished one of life’s hardest challenges learning how to tie your shoes the other way
Considering that you mention “the other way” I'm guessing that you were previously using the “Two Loop” (or “Bunny Ears”) method? If so, hopefully you'll no longer stand out when you tie your shoes!
thank you sir, i can now tie my shoelaces whenever i have to use my shoes :D
I'm pleased to hear that you can now correctly re-tie your shoes every time. Congratulations!
G'DAY Mr.Fieggen Thank you for your useful videos, it's really help. Have a good one.
You're most welcome, I'm pleased that you found my videos useful. Have a great day also.
Thanks so much my G! I’m learning how to bag food orders for my new job and this knot was required! Able to do it proficiently after practicing!
You're using this knot to bag food order? How cool - I'm pleased to have helped! Of course, you *could* take it to the next level and learn the faster “Ian Knot”. You'd then be the fastest food-bagger around!
Ty now i dont have to do bunny ears anymore. This helped alot!
You're welcome, I'm pleased to have helped you switch.
Thanks for the left hander’s demo!
You're welcome, Anna!
You a dope professor, professor! Thank you!!!
You're welcome - and thanks for the compliment!
Thanks so much man I did miss apart of my class for this but it's so worth it thanks again
Skipped one class to learn something else? Sounds like you're thirsty for knowledge! I'm happy that you found my video worthwhile.
Thank you! Im currently 19 years old, and many people mock me for not knowing how to tie my shoes, now i know thank you ❤❤
You're most welcome, I'm pleased that you were able to learn from this video. Congratulations!
Thank you sir for helping me!
You're welcome, mate!
Helped a lot💕💕
🙂
Thank you.
You're welcome.
This help me a lot
I'm pleased to hear that it was helpful to you.
i’ve never met anyone else who ties their shoes like this, glad to know i didn’t just randomly make it up
Your comment has me surprised. Which method do you usually see other people using? Bunny ears?
Thank you for teaching me to finally tie my shoes
You're welcome - and congratulations on learning at last!
thanks a lot!!!
You're most welcome!!!
Thank you so much man
You're welcome, thanks for commenting on my video.
It’s 4 am and I need to clean my room but I’m here watching this but this helped a lot I been trying to do this for years and I finally did it I’m so proud of myself thank you so much 💖😁😭😭😭🙈
It's always fun finding something better to do than cleaning your room. Great opportunity to learn to tie shoes - congratulations!
Finally something that i can do
Great, happy to have helped.
another great video here ian! i have a question. does it matter which way you 'fold' the loop? in this video you are folding the loop towards the front of the shoe. on your website (stage 2 flip book) it looks like you are folding the loop towards the rear of the shoe. hope that makes sense ☮️
I get what you're saying. Up to Step 5, the loop is pretty much flat, with the loose end at the right. At Step 6, the loose end begins to tuck behind as the knot tightens into it's finished state.
Mostly this was done for the sake of clear diagrams. You can form the loop any way you wish. It will usually rearrange itself during tightening, but even if it doesn't, the knot should hold almost as reliably.
Thank you
You're welcome, Oliver.
@@ProfShoelace nice one
;-)
2:04 the other option - what I do as an ambidextrous person - I do the starting knot the same as you did, but for the finishing knot instead of "running the right loop around the back", I run it around the front of the left loop
If so, you're creating an unbalanced “Granny Knot”, which sits crooked and will come loose. You're welcome to wrap around the front as you are doing but to re-balance the knot you should do your Starting Knot in reverse.
I love how you like and comment every comment, very nice if you💖
Thanks, I think it's only polite to acknowledge those who have taken the time to leave feedback.
Hi Professor Shoelace! Does this method also work for round or oval types of shoelaces as well?
This method is just as easy to tie with round or oval shoelaces. That said, round shoelaces don't tend to hold a knot as well as flat shoelaces. Oval shoelaces are somewhere in between. Some people find that a secure shoelace knot is a better option.
@@ProfShoelace Hi again, and much obliged to you for the reply! As you said, using this method on either round or oval kinds of shoelaces aren't as secure as I discovered recently. Therefore, could you please upload a video to demostrate this scenario with either round or oval shoelaces? Thanks very much in advance Professor Shoelace!
My "Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot" video shows some slippery round shoelaces being knotted securely with the "Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot":
ruclips.net/video/1RbaIo4VdbA/видео.html
Does it matter if you go around the loop front to back or back to front? IOW, viewed from above you go counter clockwise or clockwise?
Yes, it does make a difference! If you want to go round the opposite way to this video, then you'll also have to tie the “Starting Knot” the opposite way so that the finished knot is “balanced” and stays secure. Otherwise, you'll end up with an un-balanced “Granny Knot”, which sits crooked and tends to come undone.
@@ProfShoelace Uh oh, I was taught wrong as a young child and did it that wrong way until I adopted Ian's Secure Knot. Darn sister!
Oh well, at least you *have* now learned the correct way, which will serve you well for the remainder of your life. Congratulations on learning the “Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot”!
This is how I've always tied my shoes although I then take those loops and make a second knot.
That's what I call the “Double Shoelace Knot”. May I instead suggest one of the other secure knot techniques, which have equal security yet can be untied more easily when needed.
Un poco de todo alguien o soy el único?
.
I can only use one hand, how do I tie knots?!¿¿ 😢☹😶😬
🥺
You could try my “One Handed Ian Knot”:
ruclips.net/video/si-iQpBBusM/видео.html
I can’t do it😢
Soryy to hear you're finding it difficult! Maybe try my website, which has animated, step-by-step instructions:
www.fieggen.com/shoelace/standardknot.htm
Still don’t know how to tie my shoe😢
Sorry to hear that you're finding the video frustrating. Maybe try my website, which has animated, step-by-step diagrams and instructions.
Why left over right and not right over left? It's always like that but end result is the same..
Left-over-right is natural for me. If right-over-left is more natural for you, then go for it. Just bear in mind that you'll also have to reverse the way you tie your finishing bow so that the finished knot remains balanced and secure.
I always get confused after the loop because I can’t see where the person pushes it through
True, our pesky fingers tend to get in the way.
18 years old I just did it first time
I'm guessing that this has long been an issue for you, Kaidyn? I'm therefore pleased that you had success following my video.
Left over right starting knot: right loop, left end around the back of the loop. Left loop, right end around front of the loop.
Right over left starting knot: right loop, left end around front of the loop. Left loop, right end around the back of the loop.
Here, this shows balanced resulting knots. Hope i helped
Once again, thanks for helping spread the word about avoiding the “Granny Knot”.
You did! That’s why, on another video, with a “left over right” starting knot and using the left loop, the right end goes around the *front* of the loop.
It seems impossible to me to come up with some mnemonic for these. I guess the best thing to do is just pick _one_ starting knot and _one_ loop for both shoes, no matter if you’re right-handed or left-handed, and stick with that. (I’m left-handed but I _think_ I use the right loop-at this point I’m not even sure. I have to just learn one of these granny-knot-avoiding ways.)
I am so happy you taught me I am 19 and you have cured my two loop syndrome 😂
No more furtive bunny ears shoe tying, right? Congratulations!
Bob
Bob?
That’s how long it takes for you to tie your shoe, I feel like 2 is much faster!
2? I'm guessing you mean using the two-loop technique? Or do you mean with my split-second “Ian Knot”?
I can’t do this one it’s so hard 4 me
Luckily, there is more than one technique. My recommendation is my own "Ian Knot", if you're game to try.
Bunny ears is so much easier
I agree - I think the symmetry makes more sense, especially when kids are first learning.
*Thank You, Good Sir, I'm 71 in the year of "Our Lord" 2022. I lost the use of my left hand 8 days back; first time in my history in my aforementioned second set of 9 lives Almighty God has provided my Soul, for He still has missions for me ahead. God Bless all whome you hold near and dear!
For anyone who've read my words; This includes all of "YOU"* :)
I'm pleased to hear your optimism, despite losing the use of your left hand. Souns like you may benefit from learning a one-handed shoelace knot instead!
In still so confused 😭😭😭
Sorry you're finding it confusing. Personally, I recommend my own “Ian Knot”. But if you'd like to learn the “standard” technique, and this video isn't helping, maybe try my website, which has animated, step-by-step diagrams and instructions.
@@ProfShoelace alright thank you
No way I actually did it first tey
First attempt success - congratulations, Kaidyn!
lolz why 'left over right', why not 'right over left' - are you left handed? Right over left, then wind the lace over the front and tuck in from behind easier than round the back and push through from the front.
Having watched countless shoelace tying videos, I've seen other people using just about every possible variation of left / right / front / back. This way feels most natural to me, even though I'm not left-handed.
As for the merits of pushing through the back or the front: For an adult - who can work by "feel" - pushing through the back is probably easier because the fingers are in the most natural positions. But for a child - who needs to work by "sight" - pushing through the front is the obvious choice.
Doesn’t work
Video doesn't help? Knot doesn't help? Comment doesn't help?
Video
Can’t do the knot is what I’m saying
HOW THE FUCK DO I DO THIS
How the f*** do I answer that?
I like Ian's knot better
Thanks for the vote of confidence in my knot!
@@ProfShoelace ok but do you who Ian knots is? You should check his website 😉
I'm intrigued - what's his website?
That's my website - and that's my "Ian Knot". Nice to know that it's also *your* preferred knot!
@@ProfShoelace oh I didn't know that. I'm speechless you even got a RUclips as well.
I can't tie I am never going to learn 😭😭😭
I hope you get it eventually, Gavin. If not, maybe try my “Ian Knot”, which has fewer steps to memorize.
This doesn't work
Sorry it doesn't work for you. Not everyone follows my video instructions. Maybe try my website, which has animated, step-by-step diagrams and instructions.
This didn’t help one bit
Sorry that my video didn't work for you. Maybe try my website, which has detailed step-by-step instructions and diagrams.
So bad
Bad?
This works great on drawstring pjs! Thanks, I no longer need to tie a double knot and not be able to get it off!👟🧶
Good point that it's not just for shoelaces! I'm pleased that you now have a more suitable knot to use on your drawstrings.
