You could start with autocross. You don't have to do anything to prepare the car and there are basically no consequences. That's how I got comfortable before going on track.
You don’t need a private instructor to start and you’d get more out of a private instructor after a couple events anyway. Golden Gate Lotus Club is a good option. They have a volunteer sit in the car until they sign you off to drive solo.
My modifications are very minor. Without the additional (modest) front camber I’ve added, you will wear the outside of your tires and get more understeer. But overall, these aren’t big changes from stock.
That was fun. Considering trying to track the BRZ. A little concerned about wear and tear or wrecking it!

Asked some friends and they said Hooked on Driving and NASA HPDE1 are great for beginners too.
