We enjoyed perfect weather for Round 9 of 86 Challenge and I was able to best my previous time by almost 2 seconds. Stock Class competition was fierce and I’ve got work to do to get back on the podium! I also tried out Ray-Ban Meta glasses for onboards. Mini review: they only take 3-minute videos, so it’s pretty limiting for on-track action, but it’s as close as you can get with off-the-shelf p...

Time for something a little different. I got to drive my friend Svilen’s NASA E2/ST5 racecar at Buttonwillow after crewing for him in an endurance race this weekend. It was an awesome experience to drive a dedicate track car, with a full safety system, high grip Maxxis RC-1 tires, MCS suspension, and aero (just hood vents and a low angle-of-attack rear wing). 86 Challenge Round 8 Oct 5, 2024 Not my best 86 Challenge performance, but a fun first time running the reverse layout Thunderhill West. Ended up P4 but feel like I could have gone significantly faster if I put it all together. Also collected some interesting data about the V2 Verus high capacity oil pan. Awesome walkthrough. I've been looking for a sturdy headrest mount so nice to see the Ansix solution! Bunch on amazon for cheaper but they look flimsy (and ugly lol) Any thoughts on the greddy oil cooler? I've heard some good things about it but also worried about potential overcooling on the street

    • @900BRZ
      @900BRZ 8 дней назад

      Yeah, I didn't mention this but I also don't even use image stabilization on the GoPro. Definitely recommend the mount. In general I'd recommend an air-to-oil cooler setup vs water/coolant-to-oil. Overcooling oil on the street is something to be aware of for any oil cooler. I use the tape method to block some airflow to the oil cooler core and that works well. Almost all kits also have thermostatic sandwich plates which limit the flow through the oil cooler circuit at lower temps. Greddy has a 170°F thermostat which is lower than ideal IMO. I don't really like that the GReddy kit requires a non-OEM oil filter and the 90deg fittings introduce a bit more restriction into the system than the 45deg fittings on my kit.

    why u running the trash taiwan toyota filter instead of japanese made tokyo roki subaru filter? the research behind this filters is a dead horse. run tokyo roki, end of day. edit: also, the CCV cans purpose is to prevent ingestion of oil vapor to prevent detonation/octane reduction, not to catch large quantity.

    • @900BRZ
      @900BRZ 8 дней назад

      Eh, I want to see for myself the difference between the filters. The purpose of CCV _and_ PCV catch cans is to eliminate oil vapor sent into the combustion chamber and thus lowering octane. If there's not a lot being caught in the CCV side, it shouldn't really be necessary to have a catch can on that side IMO. There are already AOS built into the block, so catch cans should only really be necessary if they are actually catching oil.

    • @Cichlid_Visuals
      @Cichlid_Visuals 8 дней назад

      @@900BRZ overseas they seem to really prefer the CCV side catch can, almost every japanese GR86 or BRZ ive seen is running a simple cusco or greddy can clearly plumbed from the intake side. seems to be standard practice for the cup cars over there from 1st and 2nd gen series, same with your dipstick tie downs etc.

    Reading your blog post regarding the issues that led up to fabricating custom oil cooler lines, do you think you would have had the same chafing issues if you had went with something like the Ansix Oil Cooler (Fittings are located on the side of the cooler and not the top like Jackson Racing) And as always, thank you for your community contributions. I still plan on bring my BRZ to 86 challenge one of these days and seeing you out on track soon enough.

    • @900BRZ
      @900BRZ 9 дней назад

      I'm not totally convinced on the Ansix approach with so many short rows. I'd worry that the flow would stall far away from the fittings and it might decrease the efficiency. Personally, I haven't seen any oil cooler kits on the market that I think are optimal. I'm actually going to swap out the Jackson Racing sandwich plate as well.

    Crazy how your average hobbyist is able to capture such data with off the shelf tools. 50 years ago this would have cost millions.

      Well there was some custom amateur electronics made by my friend to inject the oil pressure into the CAN bus but there are multiple products on the market now do that out of the box. Definitely amazing to be able to log all this data and review it later.

    I think that pressure problem is bc the way the oil sits in the oil pan. seems like the problem happens every time you're going over a crest or a bump. maybe when the gravity is not pushing the oil down it makes a bubble in the oil pickup.

    • @900BRZ

      Yes eventually, but not really sure when since I don't have data outside of a fully built race car. Any wet sump engine will eventually starve if you throw enough G at it.

    놀라운 영상입니다. 트랙 레이싱으로 쓰지 않았고 일상적인 주행중 엔진이 고장이 났지만 도요타 한국 서비스 센터에서 6000RPM까지 올라간 기록이 있다며 보증 수리를 거부 당한 불쌍한 사용자가 한국에 있습니다.. 지금은 "절때 RPM을 높게 쓰지마!", "코너링도 돌지마!" 조롱 당하고 있어요. 현재 다른 차를 운전하고 있습니다. 2019 현대 벨로스터 N 주행 중 심각한 엔진 문제가 발생하여 무상수리를 받았으나 서비스센터에서는 위와 같은 불친절한 문제는 발생하지 않았습니다.

    Stupid question, but have you tried just adding oil? Stary at an extra half qt, then a full, then maybe even 1.5qt extra. Obviously watch the oil pressure, it could just aerate instead of helping

    What a road car needs is a dry sump system to keep the oil supply constant and allow the oil to de-foam in the tank before being pumped into the oil galleries.

    • @o0Guns0o
      @o0Guns0o 11 дней назад

      not necessarily, this is only an issue for racers who push their car hard with high grip setups. it would be a waste of money to develop and produce a dry sump system, further increasing MSRP.

    Flat oil pan test? Old School but good... Maybe It's the solution If the fishing range is the problem. The anti-shaking barrier only works if the sump is low enough, I could advise you to look for the solution in the boxer engines of the alfa romeo 33, in itself the FA20-24 is just the evolution, but even that engine has the same problem if you ride on the track or mountain passes, in addition the boxer engine is quite famous for getting drunk or for filling the oil passages after years ... In my opinion it is solved a lot with a flat and anti-shake cup with The floating panel, however, because it is fixed can still keep the part empty. At least I had done xpsibe I had solved the problem. Old solutions that still work well today, that was also used on BMWs. 😉 It seems to me that in any case in the race the pressure was constant ... Perhaps also due to the temperature?
