I had Dr. Habermas as my teacher for one of my classes at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. I decided to do my paper for his class on the humanity of Jesus. My classmates thought I was nuts to deal with a subject that Dr. Habermas deals. I ended up with an A on that paper. I learned and am still learning so much from him.
It took 2000 + years for someone to finally come along and establish the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ? It’s more like a rehash of the same flimsy arguments for it. The most powerful and important being in the history of the universe should’ve done a better job. We wouldn’t have the confusion of the thousands of denominations who all believe they’re right and can show it via the Bible. The abrahamic god is a story of failure after failure in his inability to get his creation right.
God's ways are not our ways. God's time is not our time. God's mind is not our mind. The biblical narrative is coherent from the beginning to the end. I would encourage you to delve more deeply into the scriptures as I you will find the it all points to the deity, death, and resurrection of Jesus, which makes possible eternal life for you and I.

You know, they collected all the greatest biblical scholars in a recent video here on youtube, called "Satan's guide to the bible"! Don't worry about the name its just a joke. You should watch it, they talk at great length about the bible in a way that audiences are really raving about!!!

Arm yourselves with knowledge of the truth and become a shining beacon in the night, dispel the darkness with the light of truth, and thus build the Kingdom of God
Some are that form of liar that believe what they*want* to believe and the halfwit Habermas is one such; if you substitute fairies or unicorns for resurrection, it comes to the same thing
Belief requires no reason at all. Only blind devotion and the ability to lie to yourself. Doubt is reason trying to tell you that your beliefs are a bunch of fairytales and lies. You should listen.
'If Christ Jesus Did Not come back from the tomb, from all peoples we are the most miserable' quote by the Apostle Paul in 1st Corinthian 15, New Testament (in the Christian Bible)
Paul never had any direct evidence of the resurrection. Did he learn about it from "others" or did the "Lord" show him in a vision? Either way Paul is one of the first liars and spreaders of inaccurate information.
@@saltybits9954What direct evidence are you meaning? Saul was an intellectual, theologian, pharisee, and a roman citizen. He had no reason to completely flush that sweet life down the toilet by doing a 100% about-face one day and follow the very person he absolutely hated. Paul saw the risen Jesus with his eyes. Then he spent the rest of his life proclaiming the risen Lord. JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR!!! Why would anybody purposefully and knowingly LIE about something they didn't believe in a week ago??? Paul wasn't crazy because there is no evidence of that. He still had just as much schooled and worldly knowledge to test what he already knew and what he saw. He met with people and had further discussions on the matter most likely. GOD WANT'S US TO QUESTION THESE THINGS. Why would so many people in the world today still believe in these lies as you say? In fact a better question would be, why do you not want to believe in a man, Jesus, who historically did NOTHING ELSE BUT GOOD THINGS FOR HUMANITY? What did he lie about? AND BE SPECIFIC!!! When you answer remember this. There are people who have dedicated their lives to looking into the resurrection and have come up with very good evidence that it happened. Just because you don't like the flavor doesn't make it any less true.
Thank you both for this terrific interview. Love it!! Dr Habermas is so well read, wise and warm-hearted as Prof John Lennox, two of my favourite Christian scholars, along with Sean + Josh McDowell, William Lane Craig, Lee Strobel, Justin Brierley, and Richard Bauckham. I have some follow up questions and would love to hear Dr Habermas' thoughts on it: 1) what does Dr Habermas think of the prophecies in the Old Testament that point to the Messiah? 2) the conversion of Saul of Tarsus who persecuted the early Christians and then became a Jesus follower himself, is a powerful evidence for Jesus' resurrection. Bart Ehrman disputes that by claiming Saul/Paul felt guilty and that's why he became a Christian. What would you respond? I would say Paul was a leading and renowned pharisee, he had a lot to lose and nothing to win when he became a Christian. And nobody is willing to die for something they KNOW to be a lie. 3) it is unlikely that the early church invented the authors Marc and Luke bc those men were not apostles, Luke even was not an eyewitnes himself. If the church had invented the authors they would have chosen the name of Peter, for instance. I heard Bart Ehrman say something along the lines that the names Marc and Luke could have been invented bc Marc knew Peter and Luke knew Paul, I think in a debate with Bauckham. I find that not convincing at all, why would the church chose no-names instead of Peter himself?
"And nobody is willing to die for something they KNOW to be a lie." According to what is written, he did not die because of what he knew, but rather for what he BELIEVED.
What an absolute blessing. I wish all the lifelong biblical scholars would consider doing this type of project. Imagine how much knowledge has been lost to the grave at the passing of a scholar. Gary Habermas is a theological giant, and he blesses us with this series.

@00:19:02 - Sean and Gary's discussion of his dissertation prompted me to go look it up. There is not a single non-English source in the bibliography, which would be damning by today's standards for any work in history or theology, and Gary was writing back when the vast majority of critical biblical scholarship was taking place in German. Moreover, he identifies editorials appearing in the popular periodical "Christianity Today" as "scholarly articles." I have started reading it, and am now wondering how on earth this earned him a Ph.D. Maybe there is something more than what I am seeing so far.
I checked his bibliography and saw a number of references to non English sources E.g. Schweitzer, Bornkam, Bultmann, Schleiermacher, Schaafs, Pfleiderer,, Pannenberg, Mowinckel, Moltmann, Lessing, Harnack, Brunner, Strauss, von Balthazar. And the Christianity Today article that I saw was written by Edwin Yamauchi who is a bona fide scholar. To evaluate its appropriateness I think one would need to actually read the article.
@@deki5119 No. You did not. Look again. Every one of those citations in Gary's dissertation is to an English translation of a German original. Notice how many of them have included the translator in the entry. There are no German language sources in his bibliography. None. Only English translations. There are no sources written in any other language included, either. It is entirely English language scholarship, literature or English translations. Scholars write non-scholarly articles all the time. I have done so. But what is never done is confusing these popular publications for "scholarship," even when it is written by scholars.
@@DrKippDavis Oh he only cited English translations of German sources instead of the German version of German sources? In other words, he cited German sources. Holy fuck Kipp, you're an even bigger clown than I thought.
@@alecepting1371 No, I am suggesting that when someone does a Ph.D. touching on any field of biblical studies or theology, they usually would need good enough of a grasp of German, and probably French, to be able to navigate the extensive literature written in those languages. It is extremely odd for one to get through their Ph.D. without having to read any German or French sources. Gary's bibliography contains no non-English sources, which is very strange for a Ph.D. dissertation in this topic. Without knowing, it certainly provides the impression that he was not capable of navigating the volumes of extremely important German literature relevant to his thesis.
The greatest comprehensive presentations seem to come from the people who had deep doubts and did the footwork to prove to themselves that their faith was based in Truth. Dr. Gene Scott walked away, essentially became an agnostic until he realized his professors at Stanford just wrote the resurrection off without intellectually considering the evidence for even 5 seconds. Lee Strobel wrote a case for faith because he was being attacked spiritually and he intellectually worked thru what became the case for faith. Thank you, Dr. Gary Habermas for your passion and stick toitiveness
Don't think so since Habermas hasn't presented anything new in terms of verifiable evidence. Most of the refutation will be concentrated on his fallacious arguments. And most of them are already out there because Habermas is basically rehashing his old fallacious arguments.

His argument boils down to 'If you cannot explain these alleged events to my satisfaction you should believe the least likely explanation'. These 'facts' can be explained, and even if we did not have an explanation it would not follow that therefore the resurrection occurred. Paulogia has a natural explanation and it seems very plausible. There could be many many natural explanations for all of these facts that we have access to now or just have not considered. Any of those natural explanations should be believed, the supernatural one should not be believed. More pages does not make the argument better.
If so, why do I have to google paulogia to find out who they are? If he had the credibility to come up with such great explanations, why aren't they well known and quoted? If you look, you can find many actual scientists with peer reviewed studies as contributions to their respective communities that embarked on the journey to disprove what the Bible tells us only to end up being believers and followers of Jesus Christ! The overwhelming majority of historians agree that Jesus and his apostles were real and that Jesus was crucified and that the apostles were suddenly willing to die to tell everyone they saw that they saw Jesus resurrected. Have you ever tried to understand quantum physics? It's just as abstract as spiritual stuff, but physicists use the term "evidence", even though there's nothing physical to show as evidence. Evidence is maybe convincing for one person and not another.

@@raulhernannavarro1903 there are different aspects of quantum physics, some of which defies understanding (by that, I mean cause and effect). Both of these scholars are great! Thanks guys for your important work on our central Christian doctrine, with examining, testing, codifying, and sharing the truth of Jesus' Resurrection. Does the argument of the Roman soldiers assigned to the tomb still figure in the critical examination of the evidence? I wonder if its absence is what leads Ehrman to attempt to discount the known burial. Pilate and the Jewish leaders had vested interest in avoiding any of the possible excuses or mischief that could have been done with the body of Jesus. I'll have to read Gary's work to understand why it doesn't figure in the top 6 or so discussed facts and evidence.
Habermas spent all those years researching the empty tomb and never noticed that there isn't enough information in the Gospels for any critic to actually find it. Also, there's NOTHING in the Gospels that says ANYTHING about the tomb remaining empty. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which was considered to be Jesus' tomb by 4th century Christians, has spaces cut out for six bodies, not one. What a complete joke.
That's because it was Joseph or Arimathea's family tomb into which he put Jesus. Hence the multiple spots. But he buried Jesus there out of respect for him.
@@BibleFanatics > That's because it was Joseph or Arimathea's family tomb into which he put Jesus We don't know for certain that it belonged to Joseph of Arimathea, though. 50 years and thousands of hours in trying to prove something that if it was true would not lead to anyone needing to study that long. A big fail. Faith is a complete copout. Why would God want people to study for 50 years to get enough evidence to attempt to prove anything? If it’s true it’s true. If it’s not it’s not. I would much prefer to believe in an afterlife, and a world created /designed by an omnipotent creator=God. You may describe Creation theory as myth, however, you have no evidence to the contrary. Creator/God theory explains the complexities of the our existence. The age of the earth is not explained fully by "science", as they had to use a theory or a best guest to even measure the age of the earth, yet the bible contains history and science i.e. creation Every day more is being discovered that aligns more with Creative DESIGN as opposed to a random explosion that somehow created life!! This is ludicrous. It always truly puzzles me that Christians never stop and ask themselves why their God has made such an awful job at transmitting his story and his message which, if true, must be the most important thing ever communicated to humanity. If the Christian God exists, and he is truly omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, etc, then his message must be the most important one ever, yet he chose to transmit it in one specific place, within a relatively primitive culture, written decades afterwards in a language (Greek) not spoken by most of the principal characters in the story, and written in a book which has allowed for a vast range of interpretations. Even conservative Christian scholars agree that the synoptic gospels are all anonymous and if pushed to be very specific they will concede that the only named person who claims to be an eyewitness of the resurrected Jesus is Paul. Even so, there are three versions of Paul’s encounter with Jesus in the Acts of the Apostles, all of which could fairly be characterised as some form of vision or psychotic event Surely Christians should at least consider that their God has done a very bad job? After all, the stakes couldn't be higher . . . Salvation or Damnation. Even if a Christian thinks that there isn’t a problem, even if they think that the tortuous attempt by Habermas and other apologists to try and wrangle some sense and credibility out of the many evidential problems with the Bible is a worthwhile way to live, then I have one question for them. Could the evidence be better? Surely an honest Christian couldn't deny that it could be better? For example, as a basic minimum we could have the original texts of the Bible instead of anonymous copies. We could have the text be so clear that the need for interpretation is non-existent, it could be so clear that it wouldn't have generated a vast range of interpretations (and denominations) even amongst Christians. Just ask a Catholic and a Calvinist to tell you about their beliefs and see what I mean. This being the case what we seem to have is a "perfect being" transmitting the most important message ever in what is clearly an imperfect way. A "perfect being" doing something imperfect. Really? I simply shake my head. This is ludicrous.
Thanks for your response. I really appreciate it. As I said in my previous post, the overwhelming consensus amongst both Christian and non-Christian scholars is that Mathew, Mark, and Luke are anonymous texts. If you doubt that this is the consensus please research this and you will see what I am saying is true. It would be foolish for me to lie when you and anyone else reading this could check. The reason that the gospels have names attached to them is simply Church tradition. They are not eyewitness testimonies. You mention the Apostolic Fathers, and this is what I mean bv Church tradition. There are, however, extremely Conservative Christian (mostly Protestant evangelical scholars) who make the claim that the gospels are not anonymous, but this is because they let their desire that the Bible be inerrant override the facts. Most Catholic scholars don't take this stance; instead they rely on church tradition but when pressed they will admit that, strictly speaking, the only honest answer is that the synoptic gospels are in fact anonymous. For obvious reasons, priests and pastors seldom mention this as it can be a factor in undermining peoples' faith There are many good r,easons for believing that they are anonymous, not least the fact they they have been dated to 50, 60, 70 years after Christ died when the Apostles would have been long dead. Also, they were written in Greek which Mathew and Mark would not have been able to write. I could go on, but it's all there for you if you want to research it. Of course, understanding and accepting that the Gospels are anonymous does not prevent anyone from believing in Christianity, it simply enables them to judge the claims of their faith on the basis of facts not untruths. However, the fact that the gospels are not written by eyewitnesses is a major problem for the claims of Christianity. Hope this helps. @@fynflorentine2512
You know coming back to this, I realized...isn't this all kind of silly? God requires you to believe and repent to Jesus in order to go to heaven. Supposedly that's what God wants too since he loves us so. And yet, we have this guy who has spent over 50 years reading bronze-age stories in order to try to prove it is real to modern audiences. Doesn't that just seem absurd? Why should it be *this* hard to prove God's existence? Why does it all hinge on a single story about resurrection from 2000 years ago? Doesn't the whole thing just seem logically absurd? Doesn't it suggest that the Christian story just isn't real?
I believe it isn’t about proving that God exists. These people dedicate their lives to this because science and faith go hand in hand.

Thank you Dr. Habermas for your dedicated research focused on establishing the truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 🙏
There is no research behind Christianity. It’s a mythological fairytale. Talking snakes, talking donkeys. Lol

'If Christ Jesus Did Not come back from the tomb, from all peoples we are the most miserable' quote by the Apostle Paul in 1st Corinthian 15, New Testament
(in the Christian

That is definitely proof

I have some follow up questions and would love to hear Dr Habermas' thoughts on it:
1) what does Dr Habermas think of the prophecies in the Old Testament that point to the Messiah?

That would be wrong. The Bible is not dictated. How would you understand the Bible properly if you do not understand Paul letters and Paul addressing the people with real issues and heresy and what the Prophets were saying. I find it difficult , it feels backwards. It feels negative to the Christian faith but more to appeal to scholarship. What should be straightforward forward examination of the evidence becomes like don’t do it, take what the sceptics say and work from there. This invites the question one sceptics to simply disagree with the other and there goes your argument. How does sampling provide evidence, by faith of the sceptics?

@00:19:02 - Sean and Gary's discussion of his dissertation prompted me to go look it up. There is not a single non-English source in the bibliography, which would be damning by today's standards for any work in history or theology, and Gary was writing back when the vast majority of critical biblical scholarship was taking place in German. Moreover, he identifies editorials appearing in the popular periodical "Christianity Today" as "scholarly articles."
I have started reading it, and am now wondering how on earth this earned him a Ph.D. Maybe there is something more than what I am seeing so far.
I checked his bibliography and saw a number of references to non English sources
@@DrKippDavis Would you suggest Habermas be fluent in German in order to understand what these German higher critics were saying?
There’s gonna be a ton of counter apologetics videos just based on the content in this one. Let the avalanche begin.
Don't think so since Habermas hasn't presented anything new in terms of verifiable evidence.
Most of the refutation will be concentrated on his fallacious arguments. And most of them are already out there because Habermas is basically rehashing his old fallacious arguments.
Constructive criticism is always welcome. That is how Gary got to this point. Be careful not to confuse mockery with criticism.
I just perceived, my utter sinfulness, and on the road to Hell, had heard the Gospel of the Death , Burial and Resurrection, the Holy Spirit convicted me to belieb upon Jesus Christ. I learn daily about This Great grace estate of existence in the Word of God, THE JUST (me now in JC) shall live by faith!!!
These are exciting times!
@@BibleFanatics > That's because it was Joseph or Arimathea's family tomb into which he put Jesus
We don't know for certain that it belonged to Joseph of Arimathea, though.
We do know that the Romans built a temple of their own on the site somewhere around 135 AD.
There are stories of how the tomb was found under the temple but those stories also include the discovery of a cross that could heal sick people who touched it.

Even at 50 years of studying he is still at square 1. Based on the evidence nobody has even proven a god exists and that would be groundbreaking and that person would get the Nobel peace prize.
Scientists studying the Grand Canyon's rock layers & the fossils (how they were grouped together, in rock, confirmed the flood & in doing so it also aligned w/ Bible history & confirmed the real age of the earth, which then makes Creation by God way more plausible. Not a fairy tale at all. Check it out if you dare.
God bless Dr. Habermas and Sean. Keep going for Jesus!
Is God blessing the children that are getting raped on a daily basis?
I have spent around 50 years reading and studying the scriptures. After reading through the Christian Bible 9 times, I say that most of the stories are great fairytales!
So was this comment!
The Holy scriptures teaches Torah and prophets Matt.5:17-19/Isa.8:20.. It doesn't teach one milligram of Christianity.
@@alvinford6522 And I studied the Torah as well. The Old Testament is mostly the Torah. Stupidity does not help your case!
Maybe. These 11 plus Paul sure did pay quite a price for holding on to their belief in fairytales. Not necessarily convincing in and of itself, not easily dismissible either.
@@johncipolletti5611what the hell are you talking about? The Old Testament is 37 books. The Torah is 5 of 37 so how would anyone who actually studied the subject make such an obviously false statement that 5 of 37 is "most" of the O.T.?
Way to show your ignorance in one failed sentence. Yet another internet expert.
This was great !!! I have a son who is an agnostic. I Will be buying the book
Creeds are not evidence.
How did you comme to that conclusion ?
@@kilervgmmm
By using reason and evidence. Merely repeating something does not make it factual (no matter how much the Republican Party wishes it did!)
@@cygnusustus
Creeds are at least evidence of what somebody think is the case or want you to think is the case?
@@kilervgmmm
I never said they were not evidence of what people think. They are not evidence that what people think is actually true.
Understand now?
@@cygnusustus
The minimal facts argument hinges on the disciples believing that they saw the risen Lord.
From there it says the best explanation of all the evidence is the resurrection.
For this specific purpose the creed establishes/ is evidence that they believed in a resurrection.
I love this guy… he’s definitely from somewhere in the south with all of his slang usage, which I, myself, am quite familiar with, since I’m also from the south.🤗🥰
Habermas is from Michigan.
@@DrKippDavis is he really?!😅 Well, he has definitely been influenced by someone in the south must have visited there a few times are hung around some southerners!😉
@@GirlPaintsArt I mean, he has been teaching in Lynchburg VA for over 20 years now. Is that part of "the South"? (I'm a Canadian. I don't actually know anything.)
The very best argument you have is that some people in the first century BELIEVED in the resurrection. It's uncontested because it's a mundane claim. Unfortunately what you want your audience to incorrectly infer is "therefore they must have been true" which is contested by nearly everyone. A belief in a thing is not evidence that that thing is correct. You've been directly publicly repeatedly criticized about this, and you haven't yet acknowledged this glaring nail in the coffin of your entire body of work.
Bruh. The Pharisees were named. The Roman governor was named. The place itself was named.
If it is wrong, they could just drag Jesus' body around
@@fynflorentine2512yeah, it's not as easy as either most Christians or most non Christians try to make it. Decades of study, even if I don't believe, I have respect for the research.
Great interview by Sean. I bought the book after listening to this.
Booooooo. It's pre-recorded. Give me live, or give me death.
Tsk, Dr., you know they are both too much the cowards to have it live.
I just subscribed because you seem to have some pretty detailed videos and regularly engage with the apologetics community. Looking forward to watching your old stuff and any new stuff especially responding to Habermas. I don't usually like people going after folks viciously for their credentials/academic past but a simple neutral breakdown can certainly be appropriate (like saying Habermas' thesis wasn't published atypically and that his current publisher isn't an academic publisher)
@@samuelblackmon Thanks for the sub. I fear that you will be disappointed on two fronts: 1) I have taken a bit of a hiatus from video production to do more writing, and 2) I tend not to deal much with the New Testament.
But, don't let those scare you off!
Jesus can give you life, if you repent and trust in him
@@CCiPencil Which jesus, dear? you christians have so many versions. It's hilarious how you cultists all utterly fail to be able to do what your bible has jesus promising to his true believers. You, sean, gary, et al are frauds per your own nonsense.

Great timing. Gnostics are getting louder on the non belief in the Resurrection. Lock up your notes for protection!
Yay, another book regurgitating the same old resurrection arguments.
Well, he has to scam however he can, at the end of the day, christians in general are Gullible.
Ghosts don't need to eat. Another point about his divinity: 41 days after the birth of Jesus, dead bodies were found to be strewn about the temple. Anna never left the temple but fevoted herself to prayer as she waited fo messiah. She summoned her friends. These people were 'greatly asvanced in years." They likely lived in the cloisters about the temple. This is שלג 300 + 30 + 3.. The father of David was also of this type and may be a characteristic of a group of people like Elijah and Moses. Both of these men had to be "passed on" or translated from a cleft in the same mountain in order to see Jesus. These are miraculous characteristics. Jesus, for example, could pass through a crowd without being seen. Peter went through iron restraints to cone to his "self." Rabbis debate in the Talmud how Elijah cpuld run up and down Carmel in the time it took the sun to rise (or maybe it wascset,) but this is a characteristic of these people. There's more. Please forgive typis, im having vision problems today. Jesus rose and the disciples dare not stare or we'd have no disciples. ▪︎. Jesus is still alive.
Come on bro, 50 years? One topic? That’s suppose to rely on faith? Get a life man some things we’ll never know for sure just open your heart and live your life
This.
Thanks God for Dr Habermas work.
I watched the debate he had with Anthony Flew in The John Ankerberg Show about the resurrection and I believe in the debate Dr Habermas truly showed the love of Jesus Christians are to show to the unbelievers while ministering to them. The debate was also a way to minister to Dr Anthony Flew.
I believe God used Dr Habermas to change Dr Flew from being an atheist to believe in the existence of God.
Even so, there are three versions of Paul’s encounter with Jesus in the Acts of the Apostles, all of which could fairly be characterised as some form of vision or psychotic event
Surely Christians should at least consider that their God has done a very bad job?
What?
Who told you that the Gospel was anonymous?
It's been quoted by the Apostolic fathers themselves - aka the people raised by the apostles
For obvious reasons, priests and pastors seldom mention this as it can be a factor in undermining peoples' faith
There are many good r,easons for believing that they are anonymous, not least the fact they they have been dated to 50, 60, 70 years after Christ died when the Apostles would have been long dead.

Great talk! Loved it.
Does anyone “irrationally”!investigate?? Or do we add rational because Christianity is irrational.
Logic and reason came from the pagan Greeks, so you can't trust it.
I love the minimal facts. The fewer facts to prove the resurrection, the fewer arguments against it, I think.
Yep. It's pathetic.
I believe it isn’t about proving that God exists. These people dedicate their lives to this because science and faith go hand in hand. It’s meant to be together and we’re encouraged as Christians to not just believe whatever is spoon fed to us. We must have evidence-based faith. Apologists like Sean don’t seek out to prove God’s existence, instead they seek out to deliver God’s message in logic. Hope this helps. You can send me a message if you want to talk. I hope you and your family are well and that you’re having a great day ❤️
