What people don't realize about Sekiro is that it was as much of an evolution of the Souls series as Bloodbourne was. From can't put out the same game over and over and expect to be praised for it. Yep, it was the best of the series for builds, and why I still rank it over BB and Sekiro. For me, it has the most replayability. My favorite character was my tank/lightning grand lance build.
One thing that I feel soul fans don’t realize is the first thing to define the dark fantasy genre. That being the berserk manga. If it wasn’t for berserk, dark souls probably wouldn’t even be a thing. Like there’s a lot of berserk references from the soulsborne games. Now berserk isn’t just a great dark fantasy story it’s one of the greatest stories of all time. For me, it’s my favorite thing ever. On the outside, it’s a really gory and very edgy story with some of the nightmarish imagery you can find anywhere. But deep down, berserk is about life, it’s about overcoming your obstacles in life. Guts was able to find beauty in a world that he really shouldn’t have. I can’t think of any other way to describe this tale other than… Beautiful. So please PLEASE read berserk.
Talking about the soul series without mentioning Blade of darkness is a sin, it was definitely the influence for Demon souls and the base from which Miyazaki created the whole series
Bloodborne is the peak of the series and remains one of, if not the, best games I have ever played. I've only played about 10 hours of Elden Ring, but it feels like a worthy challenge to Bloodborne's crown
Sekiro isn’t a soulsborne how now? It’s just as challenging, lore intensive, and rewarding to play and explore. Only difference is you don’t create your character
It is definitely not a soulsborne game. It is a fun action game, but it is no RPG like the souls games. There is no customization or character building in Sekiro, which are very important elements for a soulsborne game. You basically play as a Samurai, and stays as a Samurai throughout the whole game. The whole point of a Soulsborne game is to customize your character and play with different builds. Miyazaki himself said multiple times back in 2019 that Sekiro is not a sucessor to the Soulsborne , it is just a different game. Comparing Sekiro with a soulsborne game is like comparing a Mario game to a Zelda game: same studio, same love, even some people work on both games, but completely different genres.
@@LCardosed92 You're arguing about a fan made term as if it has a specific definition lol. Your comparison is also ridiculous. Mario and Zelda share very little with each other. Sekiro on the other hand follows the Souls formula in many different aspects

@@strider4 nope he said the opposite, that Sekiro has so many differences compared to other Souls games that it should be considered a separate type of game. He said Sekiro was a new type of game that FromSoft has been trying to experiment for many years.
Bloodborne made me from software fan,and after that i played Sekiro then DS games. At the moment loving Elden Ring so much ! But Bloodborne was and still is my favorite one atmosphere and the setting is just something i never seen in a game before.
Dark Souls was the game that made me fall in love with the series. My favorite being Dark Souls 3, I still remember how hyped I was finally getting it. If there was 1 game I’d have to really recommend is for people to play Dark Souls.
bro just go and play it it's not an fps shooter to need that accuracy , i played it on ps4 and i don't recall finding problem on that, ur just making excuses 😂
The name Soulsborne doesn't fit to me since there's only been 1 Bloodborne game, yet there's also been a sekiro game (and now elden ring) which is similar again so it shouldn't be left out. I would just say Souls style games or Souls genre, etc. Otherwise if you want to include all of their evolutions you'll now be calling it Soulsborniroring or something.
Sekiro is not a soulsborne game so that doesn't matter. Elden Ring is a soulsborne game but the soulsborne moniker doesn't need to be changed. Same thing with Metroidvania. That's the name and everything after that just pays their respects.
I am brand new with Elden ring, but watching this gave me chills... I think it's my new favorite game, and I'm gonna try bloodborne after this. it's Cool to see a company doing their own thing with great success.

@@BBQcheese I would guess, not knowing anything about you, that I’ve put in more hours than you in the soulsborne series (probably 800+ hours). DS2 is my second favorite to DS1. I have been waiting for a video like this thank you! I really would love a documentary series on each Soulsborne release. Like an hour long each. Speaking with developers and fans alike, really going into the nitty gritty of each game and what they have meant for the gaming landscape. Soulsborne I think has changed the gaming landscape more than any series in a long long time…
I definitely agree that Sekiro isn't a Soulsborne game, main difference being that it's an Action/Adventure game as opposed to the regular Action RPG as the other games. That's not to say it hasn't been influenced by the previous games, and how it has probably influenced Elden Ring, it's just too different a game to be placed in the same category as the others. It's still an amazing game though and definitely worth playing.
To hear this genre of gaming almost bit the dust is such an eye opener. I can’t imagine not being able to rage over the enemies in Elden Ring today, not being able to see the majesty of the Lyndell Royal Capital, the horrors of the Caria Manor, or the first step onto the Lift of Rold. It’s not about the difficulty of the gameplay, it’s about the journey along the way.

All of them are masterpieces in their own. Proud to be born to play those games
The reason for the souls franchise surviving was solely because of its popularity in the west? I had no idea.
Facts. It is just way too special and unique.
18:58 luck wasn't necessarily new, it was a stat in Demons Souls which functioned the same as in Dark Souls 3
@@strider4 Well if you have any doubts, the creator Miyazaki himself said Sekiro is no Soulsborne but another type of game.
@@LCardosed92 Everyone who says it's not part of "soulsborne" refers to that interview from E3 2018. He doesn't even say that it isn't Soulsborne, rather that it was not designed as an evolution of it. Something can be designed as it's own concept but share enough with the other games to still fall under that fan made term.
My first Soulsborne came is Elden Ring but now I want to play all of these...
I actually liked the name "SoulsBorne" 👌🏻
FromSoftware is definitely one of the best Studios in my view.
I like their games a lot 👌🏻💙
Miyazaki Hidetaka is genius.
Out of all the soulsborne my fav is bloodborne and I'm really proud getting platinum bloodborne
Never played a soulsborne but heard so many good things about Bloodborne. Waiting for the 60fps version, then I'll jump in.
bro just go and play it it's not an fps shooter to need that accuracy , i played it on ps4 and i don't recall finding problem on that, ur just making excuses 😂
@@adelmaache4353 who says it's an excuse? The experience will clearly be better at 60fps, I didn't buy a PS5 and PC to play games at 30fps 🤣
Still a masterpiece at 30 fps. You might be waiting for something that never comes
i just started bloodborne as my first soulsborne game 3 days ago and i’m absolutely hooked
SouslBorne sounds cool that's why we use it lol
Sekiro is not a soulsborne game so that doesn't matter. Elden Ring is a soulsborne game but the soulsborne moniker doesn't need to be changed. Same thing with Metroidvania. That's the name and everything after that just pays their respects.
Really wasn't expecting Gamespot to drop a quality video about FromSoftware. Good on them!
GameSpot review of Demon Souls is what got me in and It's been my favorite game series since then. 🤗
I am brand new with Elden ring, but watching this gave me chills... I think it's my new favorite game, and I'm gonna try bloodborne after this. it's Cool to see a company doing their own thing with great success.
When my father want fun ps4 action game
Merchant:try this it is very FuN
*Pick up bloodborne
*Only for 10$
4:20 that mechanic was beautiful. It would only go dark depending how many times you died. You'd literally have to die to fight certain invaiders and nps plus drops
This is the greatest run I have ever seen in any video game franchise in my life. I'm 42 and from the NES era and I have seen a lot a great games. The worst game is Dark Souls 2 which I still loved and give a 9 out of 10.
I'm glad you started with King's Field series. I always said they were the granddad of the Souls games. Nice to see that insane game get some love. I spent WAY too many hours in I and II as a kid.
Bloodbourne was my first From Software game, and I just got into that a couple years ago.
I think the DLC was the perfect way to do DLC. If you didn't play it, you didn't miss our on huge story beats. It simply added to the lore and gave you access to two of the hardest bosses I've ever fought (and I'll die on the hill that Ludwig is harder than the Orphan)
currently playing the first dark souls game and even though I love it, I feel like I'm losing my sanity LOL but I guess that's why the game works, the bosses, locations and the character design is amazing.
Great work on this video
Elden ring is easily the best game ever created, im absolutely addicted to it
The temperature dropped, the fever passed. What do you think now about what you once said emotionally?
I had kingsfield 2 back on ps1 and thought it was the coolest game, first person dark fantasy game never got to finish playing it, would love to see a remaster/remake.
We need a PS5 update for Bloodborne so bad. Or a PC release
This was great to watch. As I'm waiting for elden ring, I am currently devouring all of the soulsborne knowledge I can. It's getting me so hyped up
Bloodborne is the greatest souls game ever made and on my top 10 games ever created of all time.
what do you think of elden ring? bloodborne was my favourite fromsoft game but i think elden ring has taken the spot for me, im just in love with this game at the moment
It's hard to imagine a time in my life when I didn't have this wonderful series
And I just bought Demon's Souls yesterday, wish me luck.
😆😆😆
Enjoy!
Honestly I see a lot of Armored Core influence on Dark Souls, I'd class that as a predecesor to Souls as much as King's Field
I love Elden Ring so much I've downloaded Bloodborne and I have the Demon's Souls PS5 remake ready to go as soon as I finish it. I attempted to play one of the Dark Souls games at some point but bounced off it hard. Elden Ring is so brilliant though..
King field still looks pretty good for the early 90s.
This would be good if it was actually complete.
History in the making, my fellow Tarnished! 🙂 Friday couldn’t come soon enough…
after playing Elden Ring for 100+ hours, I love it! That said, Bloodborne still best From Software game.
You can always tell if someone came into the series late , there favourite game will be darksouls 3 and they'll hate darksouls 2 because they have no idea how good the game was when it released for online play
@@BBQcheese clearly haven't because if that were true you'd realise they all are
@@BBQcheese okay , dks1 late game was known to be rushed , dks2 had to ditch gameplay ideas to meet release date , Bloodborne suffers from poor optimisation on the hardware it's on , low frame rates , darksouls 3 does little to anything new, it tugs on nostalgia and its world design is much more linear than previous games because it to was rushed to meet a deadline , I'm not sure why you think the games are flawless, there great but all of them have faults
@@BBQcheese Found the hate train bandwagoner.
@@BBQcheese says the hate bandwagoners that can't even think for themselves nor have they even played it.
@@BBQcheese I would guess, not knowing anything about you, that I’ve put in more hours than you in the soulsborne series (probably 800+ hours). DS2 is my second favorite to DS1. They’re the best RPGs of the bunch. DS2 also had the best PvP.
Sekiro, BB, and to some extent, DS3, are more like action games. All are at the very least 9/10 games for me. Still haven’t played Demon Souls remake due to not owning PS5.
Been playing elden ring for 3 months and I love it its my 1st souls game
Fantastic video
How are you going to gloss over sekiro like that?
acted like they didnt just add jumping to the game smh
Facts, straight up disrespected my boy Wolf.
Because Sekiro is not a souls game.
I have been waiting for a video like this thank you! I really would love a documentary series on each Soulsborne release. Like an hour long each. Speaking with developers and fans alike, really going into the nitty gritty of each game and what they have meant for the gaming landscape. Soulsborne I think has changed the gaming landscape more than any series in a long long time…
There are many such videos for each of their games available on RUclips.
Going to watch this and let it hold me over until the Elden Ring review embargo goes live lol.
Bloodborne is just so good
Thank you Miyazaki-san❤️
Soulsborne is a genre at this point and Sekiro absolutely falls into that category
No it doesn't. It's more of a Tenchu game.
@@theonewhoismany8072 no sekiro is definetly a soulsborne game, pretty much the only difference is no rpg elements
@@mrb4795 no rpg elements = not a souls game
@@mrb4795 You can't summon, you can't be invaded, there's no xp, there's no builds. It has it's roots in the soulsborne games before it but it's definitely a different thing.
Kings Field!! Now that's a throwback (dear devs, bring it back)
Let's not forget Salt & Sanctuary
& Ni Oh

Demon Souls should be relinquished from Sony, & made available for everyone, not just Playstation
Really great narrator 👍 good job
didn’t realize demons souls was your goty in 2009. gamespot has been with fromsoftware from the start
Hbombergyuy is great, but that video you recommended seems incredibly flawed.
I am one of the few that started on kings field. For me it IS a souls game.
If Dark Souls was never on Xbox's free game of the month, I would have never tried it. So glad the stars aligned and I got to experience it and the rest of the titles. Still haven't gotten past Maria in bloodbornes dlc lol.
Fantastic video !
The Old Hunters DLC might be the greatest DLC to ever exist for a game. Everything that was added did nothing but ELEVATE the base game even more.
SoulsBorne is such a great name for a sub-genre... it can have a second meaning... games born from Souls.... it just fits "chefs kiss"
This is a great comparison 😊👍
my dad beat all the king's fields (ps1 and ps2), shadow tower, and eternal ring. the souls games are rough on em now, but he's still putting in work
Elden ring is my first souls game and it’s already my favorite game i’ve ever played
My ranking is:
Bloodborne
Elden Ring
Dark Souls 3
Sekiro
Dark Souls 1
Dark Souls 2
"and he became the SOUL director"
“Highly recommend watching HBomberguy’s video In Defense of Dark Souls 2”
Me, who watched Mauler’s 10 hr response series: No, I don’t think I will
