Part 14:
We are using dead standing pine trees cut from my 40 acre property and some spruce. The logs are arranged in a butt and pass method and then held together with spikes.
We mostly rely on the help of a chainsaw to cut the logs, a tractor to drag and a lot of labor to lift them and put them in place. The pines in this replanted forest are fat too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have be cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. Removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, we will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.
In this part, we will continue to erect the log cabin walls from the foundation up. I will use the butt-and-pass method which laps one row of logs over the other, while fastening the logs together with spikes. This is simpler and quicker because it does not require the tedious work of scribing each log and notching.
A butt-and-pass corner joint on a log home creates the look of a rustic, old-fashioned cabin. As the logs are laid to create the outside corners of the building, the first log on each layer extends past the corner, and the log forming the other wall butts into the first. As the timbers are laid to build up the corner, the extended logs alternate for an effect that resembles interlaced fingers.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

This ad....with the young man teaching utube production....is really long...and it cannot be skipped....been over 5 minutes already and he's still talking....rather hear you talking....now im interested just how long he will take
I think u accidentally cut the video at the end but I might be wrong, love your content and can’t wait for more
I was having MAJOR Withdrawal symptoms cause of no video last week ;( hahahah
@123rewd cool story
Dude, Don is a friggin workhorse, what an absolute man's man.
Right!
hes as much of a machine as that big can-am! legend
Donnie deserves a lifetime supply of at least 4 litres of maple syrup a year for life. It's good to have friends that will help at the drop of a hat.
EWOK VILLAGE NEXT PROJECT!!!
Yelling because some things need to be heard.
I wholeheartedly agree with you!
Hahaha Don starting at 5:18!! Y’all put him through so much and yet he still keeps coming back!! You should have a Don Segment in the videos where he give general life advice!
I’d subscribe AND hit the bell!!
YES! EWOK VILLAGE!!! That would be awesome!
Don't you all love Don? Hes like a Duracell Bunny he never stops, hes a real blessing to you. I must say you deal with the concerns/complaints/criticism....very sweetly and it's good to know that you do read what has been written as some you tube dont bother. Xxx
imagine if the safifaction from picking at scabs is actually an evelutionary trait we inherited because we needed to pick off the bark to make good dwellings.
G'morning Kevin, Don & everyone. I learned what Noodling Wood is today! Always enjoy watching you build stuff. :)
It jams up the saw but oh so satisfying.
@@ModernSelfReliance Good to know. Thanks ~ :)
I used use these shavings to line my kids Easter baskets
Looking forward to see the Ewok Village and the outdoor gym :-)
I like the idea of a forest gym! Instead of plate weights, you've got different sizes of logs. Maybe a new building to house it?
I was going through withdrawl; thank goodness you put up this video! The sugar shack is looking great and I can't wait to see the final product of the build and syrup. At the end of the video when you said, "Ewok village" I shouted, "YEEEEESSSS!". Kevin, that is the best idea EVER! I completely support that and will even donate to see it come to fruition. 👍🏻💰✌💜🐖💨
Kevin said: "I collect Dons". 🤣🤩 At least you collect the good ones. That was an impressive group of trees that were connected that blew down! Glad you all got them cut down safely. Your plans are coming right along. Hope you get lots of delicious 🍁 maple syrup! 😋 Love your channel and all your antics. It is amazing to me how relatively fast this log cabin build is going. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family. 👍
He said “a giant game of pick up sticks” 😝 this is why I love Kevin! Hilarious 😆
Nothing like getting Rasputin's seal of approval on the syrup boil. Ten thumbs up!
These videos are always good fun. Thanks. There are two Canadian Geese who hang out in the yard. We were talking and they are fans too! Small world! Wishing you more subscribers and a great Easter!
Ewok village, that'd be nice for your daughter and her friends! Something to think about. And letting her help design it and maybe pound a few nails in here and there. Much love from So.Cal.💟
Another Dawn here to add to your collection!!
We're in NS, so doubtful I will be able to assist with any builds - perhaps I can be a moral support Dawn afar?
Great video. Always learn something new.
Wood Noodling was definitely a first for me!
Thanks for inspiring us to build & play outside!
and YES another vote for EWOK VILLAGE!
Three projects/purchases you may need. 1) Two Man Timber Carrier 2) Can’t Hook. 3) Mini Forwarding Trailer.
Keep up the good work!
Watch out for Chris sneaking a few coyote legs in that syrup.
hahaha
Hahaha too!
It is always good fun watching what you create.
Good to see yall again. I was having withdrawals all week. I have figured out why people give the thumbs down. It is because the video has to end at some point.
Hey...you said your name! So glad to see you back this week. I ate pancakes with real maple syrup this morning in anticipation of a new video coming out!
The sugar shack is amazing. More substantial than most off grid cabins. The mulch on the muddy roads is great.
Kevin, You have what is called 'Fine Motor Skills.'
Kevin. I love your channel. Your funny, informative, interesting, and down to earth. Keep up the great work.
Maple tea. Now that's a tea I could drink! Your sugar shack is looking good. Love your Path Pasta!!
Thanks Kevin, another wonderful video in your sugar shack series. Wishing you and your team a great week and comfortable weather. Greetings from NE Ohio, on the southern shore of the Great Swamp Erie. Peace brother.
Yay!! Another video! It’s coming along great. Still loving your humor..brightens my day. Shared. God bless 💕
Sugar shack is coming along nicely and Spring is in the air. Good video. 👍
Yes! A set of weights made of tree logs and stumps and a bench press! Jungle gym!
Nice to see you and Don back. I’ve been wondering what happened to you guys! Really enjoy watching my Canadian brothers on everything you build.
You are back I missed you and the quiet one and of course the bearded one !
I was really nervous that there wasn't going to be one today.
Please learn some grammar
Very true!
Puerto Rico U s a
Thank you for another entertaining video. This one also came with a bonus as I spent 3/4 of my day with an OCD plagued brain playing the "Sugar Shack" song, over and over and over...you get it, thanks again. Here it is for your enjoyment, keep up the good work and I now know why folks down south speak so favorably about our Canadian Brothers.
"Sugar Shack Song"
Lyrics
Thanks for this Kevin and Don. Just be careful since the leaning trees are here considered as the most dangerous ones. They can jump to any direction with a terrifying force when cut.
I completely agree. Loaded Spring!
I was so happy you uploaded today, missed you last weekend when u didn't. Shack is Looking good
A gym made of pipes and logs would be an awesome next build!
Ewok village? Uh, yes please!!
Love seeing progress on the sugar shack, things shaping up nicely!
After the Sugar shack is complete, a new project.
Use your saw mill to cut logs to a uniform d-log shape, then build another cabin Lincoln Log style.
14:13 - 14:15 The way y'all toss those sticks to ground has some real "kids in the woods" vibes to it
Don is a a freaking workhorse. Speaking of horses. Drafting horses are a great way to get logs out of the bush.
Oh Kelvin, the maple cooking is yum 😋...and the sugar shack is all hard work! I can't figure out how to cut the door? I guess you know how to do it! Good 👍 JOB❤❤❤
Ewok village and zip line! Not one glimpse of a muskrat what gives 🤣🔥👍🏼❤ , so wood noodles that's what they call them never knew...
I'm 100% on board for the Ewok village project!
Absolutely amazing Kevin great ideas 💡
Even before I watch I must say I am so glad to see you today! Missed you last weekend. If you didn't post this week, I was going to have to find a way to send you an email or something to check in with you to make sure all is well.
If you get a chisel, and set it into a shovel or rake handle. It makes an amazing bark peeler/scraper.
Good morning Kevin,I am so happy to see you on Saturday morning I always watch you while drinking my coffee ☕.
Don is a beast! What a blessing to have such a great friend! I’m excited to see the cabin and syrup done. Your channel is so interested for this NYC gal. Note- Donnie that looks like the Lamborghini of ATV’s!! Wow, I’d love to have one to putter around my neighborhood lol 😂 Thanks Donnie!
for a diy bathtub you can fill the evaporator up with water and bathe in it!
Ewok village ? Absolutely ! (Ewoks sold seperately)
Hi there! I found pretty handy to use hook and long pole to rotate stucked tree. One way, and oposite, it should make it's way through branches down. Try it.
Great job guys as usual, thanks for the knowledge. First time I hear about noodling👍 . 🗽🇺🇸
Great chapter in the maple sugar shack installment, I look forward to your new posts every weekend, hope all is well with brother Chris and Don, keep living the dream, peace my brother.
A come-along or some Pully systems might be useful
Man, some of those snagged up trees were pretty scary. That one you wedged down made me nervous.
Hey man, just wanted to say thank you for another great video this week. Keep slinging up that Sugar Shack. Looks awesome.
Such a pleasure to watch, keep em coming! Don is dope!
You should make a log dolly. A couple old wheels on a short axle with a latching mechanism. Can find them for sale for cheap too. But the ATV is probably faster anyways. And you know Don was just waiting for your call as soon as you started the chainsaw! :P
You guys doing an amazing job, can’t wait to see her all finished 😏👍. Wish I could smell that syrup
5:25 Canadian half finished maple syrup drank from a cup which says Made in the USA
Oh the irony. MMMMM-Grill.
The BEST part of my Saturday morning is spent with these guys!
Never heard of noodling wood - that was cool. Fun video as always.
Noodling hey? Also makes good fire starter if you don’t have anything small and dry. I used to use the “tree wool” (just made that up now) for lighting burn piles in the winter.
Lighting burn piles in the winter.. I've got old diesel for that.. ;-)
@@ModernSelfReliance True that. Sugar shack is looking good! Some strapping, shingles, chink, a door and it will be ready to keep the weather off.
Man Don is a worker. Never stops.
Really starting to take shape now! Thanks for sharing and see you on the next vid
Dude, you're getting me to use the ol' chainsaw at residential jobs, haha! My crew looked at me like I was a nut but it works bud!
nice!
It's starting to look really good. I can't wait to see this syrup done to see what it looks like and the sugar shack
I like what you do and the humor you bring - keep on brother doing what you are doing
Perfect Camping and Hunting Cabin
Log cabin like this seems like so much more work than building with milled planks! Impressive effort, think I’d go with the lazier makita driver friendly option of a plank build 😃
So glad to see you using some equipment to lift those heavy logs. Causes too many long term injuries if you don't. I think the whole cabin looks amazing. Will you use some solar panels when you are further along?
I'm not sure yet.
we made a ewak village when we were kids, a friends dad helped us. I made the mistake of showing my mom, she didn't think it was safe (probably true), every time she caught me on it I would get grounded but it was worth it, that thing was fun as hell. We had old fishing nets hung up you could jump off into, rope swings, rope bridges, tree houses, and it was high, but I have come to realise my kid perspective of size was way off, so maybe it wasn't that high. I vote ewak village, your kids will never forget it, or the neighbour kids, or the kids from the next town over, but also probably not, not nearly as fun as a tablet.... sigh
Leave it to the can am to save the day! Old Don better be getting as much syrup as he can handle. It’s tough to find friends like that these days,
LOVE YALL! Honestly my favorite RUclips..
Good EVENING Kevin & Don keep up the GREAT WORK !!! POT WATCHED IS NOT GETTING THE BOIL!!! Well it looks like Donnie ate his Wheaties this morning hahaha !!!
I feel like you should change your channel name to "modern off-grid community building". It's not an insult. I'm truly impressed at how many people are ready and willing to help you with even the most difficult and crazy projects. You have truly mastered the art of keeping good people around you. so great.
Full Stop 🛑. Getting there. Good thing you had Don Squared there today. 😂
Wow. Heavy logs! Keep safe.
“I just collect Don’s” 😂😂😂 Love it.
Very impressive, excellent work!
Looking good. Full stop!
Must be officially spring the sap's flowing and Don is here.
Poor Don works like a rented mule! I hope you at least feed the man well ! 😂
You need a Missouri mule team to drag those logs out......lol
Is there going to be a floor? And is the door going to be wide enough to get the boiler in, or is that going to be a pre-roof permanent installation? Sorry, you might've covered some of this, but if so, I missed it. Anyway, the sugar shack is coming along pretty nicely, and it looked like you boys were having fun with the heavy machinery, so... good job. :-)
Dude, you and Don are bad asses.
Don: The Hardest Working Man on RUclips. Lol.
Dave, there is another lad in Northern Ontario who builds his own cabins and other buildings as well, please check out Shawn James and his other channel My self reliance. Very interesting videos on those two channels. He does this construction by himself!
@@julieclearythefeistyrebelg5660 I'll check Shawn out. Thanks
Man I watch y'all hang these trees up and then lever them down... and all I can think is... I sure hope that that thing don't hop off the stump and slide into your body. I saw it happen once (my step-dad had a tree company when he -and I.- were younger) this guy got a pine hung up in a live oak he thought he was going go just drop it but... ya know, physics said no, lol- he lifted up on the pole and it jumped right into his hip/thigh. He was ok in the longrun, but had it hit him more squarely... luckily all it did was it spun him around and gave him a very memorable experience, a toddler sized bruise, and an ER bill. Lol. He sure thought he was gonna be paralyzed but it was just his body expressing its displeasure.
Any BIGFOOT sightings out there when you're out in the woods doing projects? LOL
Take care of Don. He is a valuable asset and friend.👍👏
Hey, Kevin
Could you do a your video, showing all of the cool things on your property?
It would be cool to make a big compilation showing the best things from each one.
21:48 - “I have functional muscles.”
😂😂😂
I love that Don tossess aside the log that Donnie (sorry Donnie) struggles with...with Don flirting with twice the age!
Awesome shed building plans, next time use it
i dont know why, but watching the logs being towed was satisfying
You guys make our Saturday!
Kevin have an idea for you INSTALL a heavier type wire across the log cabin with a chain fall. Makes it easier to pull up the logs up on the roof. Shawn James on My Self Reliance deployed the same when he installed the roof rafters on his workshop cabin all by himself check it out on RUclips. Might help you. Just a thought. Sugar shack is looking awesome. God bless be safe stay warm. Jim
Market the sap juice. All natural and healthy for you. Lol. Most important, is its Don approved 👌
We used to use a hood off an old car - say a fifty style, roll the logs on to the hood , chain them down and haul them out.
I guess similar to a rock sled. That would work.
