- Hope and joy are critical to our existence. We must all strive to see the silver-lining... and then reach out and touch it! I am so proud to have had this featured at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival years ago! I have another project going - kind of a silly social experiment/fundraiser so I can keep telling stories. Check it out here: • It's me - Joey McPickle!
BTW-Sorry for the poor quality of this post. Technology has advanced beyond the original source of this movie and RUclips seems to have altered the viewport. Updated version posted here to try and accommodate the issue: • Shadow Puppets
Please view, comment, and share from the new location - Thank you! Кино
I must have searched for this for 20 years. Asking people if they remember a short cartoon about a weird looking guy who loved making shadow puppets. I would even attempt to draw the wide head with row of teeth on the bottom. "See? Like this. You don't remember this at all?" and here it pops up in a RUclips search with hardly any effort. Thanks for ending the saga for me by posting it online.
+Craig Pierson HA! That's great! I don't know how you would have luck searching for "weird little guy who loves making shadow puppets"? I should try that and see what pops up!
Same here - It had such an impact on me - I just found it again today - so very happy - thanks so much Chuck Gamble
Chuck Gamble thank you for making this and thank you for posting it here.
I remember seeing this at a rave in Auckland around 1994, maybe 1995, and also I have searched for a long time every now and then, tonight I managed to get the key words.
Like the others here this film had a huge impact on my being. I was 18 then, on my way to art school, stayed for years, never graduated, ended up dropping out because I didn't want to sell crap people didn't want, and ended up becoming a Plasterer 13 years ago, I have two small children now and life is incredibly different. Your film i's still as good as I thought it was, which speaks volumes, as nostalgia often deceives us. I'm definitely showing this to my kids when they are old enough to get it and not be too freaked out.
I'm so excited to have found this again. I hope all is well and good with you.
I also looked for it for years. I even tried to contact you some years ago to receive it via email or any other way, even looked for it on Siggraph's DVDs to buy it if necessary. One of the best short animated movies EVER.
Me too, about 15yrs or so. I found myself asking people the same things.
RUclips can be a great tool.
Chuck,
This animation is one of the reasons I became an Artist. So glad to see this again!
I first saw this when I was incredibly young, I would guess around 5 or 6. It was so dark, oddly beautiful, and admittedly creepy; especially to a young girl. Needless to say it was unlike anything else I had ever seen. Being as old as I was only a few parts stuck with me, namely the ending when he sees that he has lost his fingers and the moves to use his toes. I never forgot that scene. I'm 21 now and just watched this for the first time since then, and it's just as fascinating as it was then.
I've always remembered this film since I saw it as a kid on IFC. I remembered so vividly when his fingers get chopped off and when he switched to his toes, it's just incredible. He has so much hope and he finds a way to be happy in such a dreary existence. Love love this film.
I saw this short film on TV when I was a kid in the '90s. It traumatized me terribly (I don't think I need to say which scene did that), but I have vividly remembered the plot and the visuals ever since. For years I have wanted to know more about this cartoon (who made it? What was it called? How many other people had this short film seared into their minds as children? Did the author create more short films in the same style?) but I didn't know where to even begin to look and I doubted that I'd ever find the answers.
Now, after twenty years, I finally have closure. I can watch this film again with an adult perspective. Thank you, Chuck Gamble, for sharing your work online.
Haven't checked comments in quite a while apparently. Wow thanks! Sorry I traumatized you!!!
A friend of my parents once showed me this animation many years ago (when I was like 7, or 8 ys old), and it struck me so much that I have never forgotten... It actually made me cry, and it was very far from common for me. So thank you Chuck Gamble, for your work and for posting it on RUclips. I would have never thought that I'd finally get the chance to see it again... Elisa from Italy
This is one of the best all time films I have EVER seen. I saw it when it first came out and I still constantly recommend it!!
Thanks Tiffany!
So nice to hear that!!! Glad it has had lasting effect. I made it a while ago but the sentiment still applies.
Peace,
Chuck
i just saw this clip on my Image Theory class... i think it is amazing. It's an example of waht we all should do " get over difficulties and opression and get free". Thank you so much for making it public!!
Go RIT! Glad you got to see my work again!
Peace,
Chuck
I saw this short in the late 90's on cable access in Austin, TX and it moved me like nothing I've ever seen before. I loved it and spent years looking for it again. Thanks to a Redditor (herenorthere) I can experience it all over again and share it with my friends. Thanks for creating this amazing film. It's brilliant!
This was one of a number of shorts my father and I watched together when I was a teenager. Since then, it has been one of the cornerstones of my ambitions as an artist - to create vibrant, dark, disturbing, thrilling works that engage the heart and the mind. I'm so glad to have found this on youtube after all these years, and I'm even more glad to be able to share it with people I love. Upon watching it now, close friends tell me, "This explains so much about you." Thank you for this film. It helped shape me as a person. I am forever grateful.
+Ilan Ben-Yehuda Wow - thank you for the kind words. I LOVE that this has given you some inspiration!!! My intent was to provide hope and inspiration with this little movie!
Regards,
Chuck
Thank you all for the kind comments! I hope to have another film out sometime in the next few years!
Peace,
Chuck
Thanks so much for posting this here. I saw this on TV years ago but never caught the name. I've also been eager to share it with people.
I watched this many years ago on Bravo (back when they were actually showing content that was worthwhile) I memorized the tittle and your name and had been searching for it ever since. I'm really glad you uploaded this to RUclips and I have had a chance to watch it again and share it with others.
It's even better than I remembered it.
this is my favorite short film of all time.
it was the first time i saw it, ten years ago.
it will be when i'm an old man in the park, feeding pigeons and smiling.
I'm going to keep making them with my feet.
Chuck, went to RIT 92-95 and cant remember how i first seen this. Been thinking about the concept of "1984" and remembered this, and soo so happy you have in online. Great Film. Both makes me Sad and Happy, what a great range of emotions. Blows me away. Congrats on all your Accomplishments with it. Please always leave it online for us to share. Blessings.
I too have been looking for this animated short for years!! All I could remember was the workers had to lock their hands up. Thank you so much for posting this treasure!
Wow - haven't payed attention here for a bit... years apparently. Where did you see this originally?
Like everyone else here :').... finally found it after looking for so long
!!
I have been looking for this film since the first time I saw it in my freshman class at RIT!
I asked for it then and have been searching for it on the net for years. I am so glad you posted. thank you and I'm glad I can share this with my friends.
Good luck on your future endeavors. :)
This piece has had such a tremendous impact on me, ever since I saw it on mtv(?) when I was definitely too young to be watching it
Los que no hace ver el profe en cuarentena
i saw this on bravo one night at like 3am. i cried so hard it hurt. thank you so much for posting it. i have been searching for it for years. every now and then i google it but i couldnt find anything. thank you thank you thank you.
Add me to the list of people that sob when they see it. It made a huge impression on me when I first saw it so many years ago and it still does. Thank you for posting this
That was absolutely top shelf! Animated to life with elan and sophistication. I'm just blown away...this is 5 + stars. What a great story of indomitable spirit! Thanks to my15minutes for tuning me on to chukchukchuk! I just subbed to both!
This is a beautiful picture. I saw it probably 10 years ago on a television compilation and loved it. For the past couple of years, though, I've been trying to remember the title, and tonight I succeeded!!
I seen this when I was little and it taught me how even in the hands of evil people still have hope in who you are I was like 9 years old
That's a great lesson I hadn't really considered!
I wish I knew when I saw this, but I was around 12 or 13. It really stayed with me even to this day and made a big impact on my mind. Really incredible work. Thanks for it.
Chuck, you have no idea how this little film inspired my work! I'm so thrilled to have found it again!!!
Still the most awesome animation on the Tube, ever. Glad I can still view it.
Thank you!
i guess im not alone i too have been searching for this for years, i saw it when iw as young and never ever forgot its message
FINALLY!! I have also been looking for this for years. I don't remember if I saw it on Bravo or at a Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation in the 90s. But I have thought of this animation many, many times and really didn't know if I'd ever be able to see it again.
I am now a senior Animation student, double-majoring in Painting. I told my instructor about this short a few days ago, and went on the hunt again. I can't wait to share it.
Thank you for this inspiring gem!!!
Chuck, I saw this video like a decade ago late at night in my mom's house. It was very powerful then, and now. A truly magnificent piece of work, and reflective of the times in which we live.
so happy you uploaded this!!! been looking for it for years. truly beautiful!
very good. +fav
thank you. chuck...really beautiful, wonderful and sad film..i gonna burst out may tears....i gonna sleepless tonight.................really really heart wrenching.....
I found it again. This piece have haunted me since the first time I saw it.
Oh man, saw this over at RIT around '09 or '10 for this art major orientation if I recall correctly. Good animation! Loving the use of negative space with that much blackness to complement the light areas as a whole. The sound was well-done, very minimalistic and yet delivers all the meaning.
this will be stuck in my head for the rest of my live. thank you for uploading this!
What an amazing piece. I see why it was important to get it up on RUclips. Particularly now. 5 stars.
beautiful & strange & perfect..saw this years ago & was so profoundly touched i remember bursting into tears. i’ve been looking for it for ages. watching it now again I’m struck w how simple it is relatable , universal dystopian, yet I think just familiar enough that It functions symbolically on so many levels.. how easily do we give up? how hard will we look to find joy? it all made me think of plato’s allegory of the cave (yo name drop) ....past the shadow (puppets) seeing,.....what a next level state of optimism this character possesses . So in conclusion those tears gave way to tears of joy i’m going to look for more art by you!! Than you.
I LOVED this little show you made it was so touching : ) Thank you for it : )
So many time searching it... :_) Thanks a lot, Chuck Gamble
it's amazing, I walked it looking for by all sides, thanks for post, really is my favorite animation
oh wow, this is the first time I see it. How lovely the story is!
shadow puppet, the title makes me chuckles within myself.
Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you! Hope and perseverance are timeless!
What everyone else said below, been looking for this for years, thank you.
Shadow Puppets animation by Chuck Gamble of Lucky Radish Studio.
I am so proud to have had this shown at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival! Thank you all so much for the kind words.
A few folks have been asking for copies of this so I now have a limited number of DVDs for sale. Shoot me an email if interested.
I hope nobody minds if I spam the comments, just a little.
I just think it's one of the best spent ten minutes on RUclips. And I am watching it every time I comment, and I'm only rating it the one time.
When I saw this as a child it was terrifying and powerful, today as an adult it is inspiring and powerful. The character goes from 1-7 in the stages of grief instantly though.
I saw this when I was probably like 7, and all I could remember was it was in black and white and this weird short guy got his fingers chopped off. I've been trying to find it for YEARS. Thank you for uploading it, the mystery is solved!
Ha! Great to hear. I bet is was a bit scary for a 7 year old!
It was. I remember it really messed me up, but now that I'm older I wanted to find it to see if I could handle it. Good news, I can! haha.
Wow, that was so amazingly beautiful. Thank you.
I was maybe13, late at night I couldn't sleep. I think it was IMC, or Bravo? Ya know, back when Bravo had artsy stuff and less reality shows? Well it just hit me pretty hard, just stuck in my head. After all these years, it hasn't lost any of it's power.
Whoa!! Well done! Kudos on this one. I hope it has been shown in many an animation festival.
I was looking for this so bad!! thanx!! this is amazing
i'm so excited this is on you tube. I havent seen it since you showed it in animation class, and now i can show it off to others! youre pretty fantastic, chuck. (xxoo - liz)
Chuck, this has a profound influence on me when I attend RIT in 1996. I was given a copy by a professor and I just noticed you trimmed up the original (or perhaps I was given an extended rougher version). Anyway, I can finally tell you how it inspired me. It's a great animated short!
Hey Mike - Great to hear!!! Yes, I trimmed it back a bit. Always wanted to tighten it up a bit.
Brutal. Way to ruin a nice rainy day.
I'm posting it everywhere i go today just to spread those good vibes around.
@usuario1971 I saw it at the same tv program, and I've been looking for it for ages, thank God a kind soul found it and send the link for me...and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it.
My God this film it's been on my mind for all this time it's absolutly wonderful, thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing it.
So funny that most of the comments are of people saying they've been searching for this film for years. I have too! All I could remember was that it was animated, b/w, and that the guy had his hands locked in a box for some reason. I was so shocked watching it again to see that they cut his fingers off!
astonishing
I just found this after fifteen minutes of search for this short film, which I remember from years ago as a very moving short film shown on spanish television, lauded as a chant to the power of freedom and hope... Thanks for making it!
By the way, my definitive successful search was.... 'make shadows with feet' :-D
Dang O.O that place is by far brutal, i would hate to work there Dx
good job chuck :) it was an amazing animation by far
k video no tengo palabras para describir maravilloso que es muchas gracias a la persona que lo subio
paz!!
Unbelievebale Master! Thanks for your work!
This was so Beautiful. :)
It made me cry! Its so Sad yet so happy. Well done. :3
Anyone else feel the same fear the little alien dude felt when the scary ass warden walked in??
I love this video. It shows a lot how the world has gotten to be like. Very touching
Like si te mandaron del colegio a hacer un trabajo sobre este video
seeee jaja
Wow...do you know I think I may have seen this before? Please tell me where I might have seen this? I am totally dumbfounded...
Ok. I'm collected. This is a classic work on the box society clasps on people and the will to spring out of that box...this work is under-appreciated and that is an understatement.
thank you so much for sharing it!
I LOVE this video...
Thanks for Sharing it...
Masterpiece and still relevant. Sadly. Just as an example: What are the slaves working on ? Preparation of Quatar's 2022 World Cup?
so very sad....
Holy fuckall; this movie is so fucking favorited. V_v that hits too close to home, or maybe just close enough. Thanks.
I saw this in 96 I believe. So happy to see it again, still very powerful.
Who wrote the music ? Can it be found somewhere ?
+raphaël beuchot Glad to hear this had an impact! I actually wrote the music with a pal helping out. Not available anywhere except on the DVD.
Oooooh Chuck you are online now!! WOOHOO!! I love this video!!!!
Hello Elisa,
I am so happy to get your note. Always rewarding to hear from folks who were effected by my work. I hope it was for the good.
Peace,
Chuck
1984.
V Vendetta.
Fahrenheit 451.
Please, freedom.
wow what a fantastic video. It's one of my current faves (no wait all time faves) and I've watched around around 9900 vids on here. Are you planning to upload more animation vids? I'm actually thinking about quitting my art history university and studying 3danimation at another one.
I love this and would like to share it with my friends! 5 srtistic stars!
Hi Chuck Gamble. I will follow some of the comments and say I am so happy I found this!
I saw this animation while I was a kid (so I guess probably around 94 if that's when the movie is from), at a movie festival in France. I nearly cried and got very sad at the end, and siince then this short movie kind of haunted me, I could still remember most of it and where I saw it.
I've been looking for it since then and found it thanks to some help in a forum (looks like I didn't put the good words on Google ;) ), I am so happy to be able to watch it again!
Btw do you still have some DVDs for sale? I would be interested :)
Thanks a lot :)
Thanks for the kind comment. Sorry I took so long to respond. Hadn't seen the comments for a while but added one at the top and saw there were many here. I had a few DVDs but not sure where they are... or course now you can just stream it!
The moral of the story is that he should have used his damn toes from the start.
wow. just wow. a heartfelt request, a genius film, and thousands of awestruck fans later. wow. thank you. thank you so very much for sharing your vision with the world. are you working on any new projects?
Awesome. I saw this first at SIGGRAPH.
However, why is the bit with the pointy-hat guy doing a Hannah Barbara laugh missing?
This is fucking brilliant!!! Fav, 5 stars, and forever in my heart.
brilliant.
Love it!
This is such a great film! So emotional with a strong message! Need this kind of message in these times. Thank you for creating this.
On a side note... are you the same person who makes the Mixamajig app?
Tracy
I'm so behind on comments! But, yes, I am... although Mixamajig is long gone... Thank you for the kind comment
1984
chuk chuk chuk
thank you
thank you
thank you
Wow, I'm slow at responding! Thank you for the comments! I have another idea brewing but not working on it yet. Hopefully in the next year or so...
Peace,
Chuck
LOL...Well I just subbed to you, trying to get in on the ground floor!
I think that i had watched it on HBO or Cinemax - they had a short film festival
Dystopia should be creepy. Haven't you seen 'Brazil'? Thanks, brother! :)
Me and you both brother!
Hey, Chuck, I found this video too inspiring and i'm asking you permission to use it as a theme for a song of a band I'm producing. May I publish it with a link to your page?
Thanxs
Wow - I'm way behind on comments... Just came back to add something and boom! Well, I hope you went ahead and did the song...
Now that's true talent... Reminds me of that Benigni-movie, "La vita è bella".
I first saw this at SIGGRAPH years ago and loved it. I am now teaching an animation class and would love to show this to my students. Can you tell me the process you used to create it?
Hi Billy, Sorry I'm slow on checking email here! Always love hearing from folks that saw this! This was all done with an old program called MacroMedia Director! That eventually morphed into Flash although some of the features were lost (like the smudging). It was almost frame by frame so kind of old school... which I love! Hope that is useful...
Peace,
Chuck
***** Thanks Chuck, this was very useful and I will share this information with the students. They all loved the short. It is difficult to keep high school kids interested in anything as you may know. They started watching the beginning of the movie and were still kinda chattering, eventually they got very quiet. I had some students actually cry at the end when the little guy was doing shadow puppets with his toes. It was very moving.
Was this SIGGRAPH '94, by any chance? That's where I first saw this.
That sounds about right.
Bello
Sushadow puppets-us!!!
Ha! Yes, I did make the Mixamajig app! Good catch! Sorry to be slow in reply. I'm so busy I don't check here much... guess that had better change! Thank you for the kind words - it is so good to know the film still has meaning for people!
Peace,
Chuck
