The first buffet place is cheap because the costs is subsidized by the temple donations. They are trying to provide to the locals who are Buddhist a place to gather and eat.
The 2nd place is a good price considering the variety of food options and expensive and exotic ingredients. That’s hard to find it anywhere else outside of China.

80 bucks is in USD? Which is around $570 in RMB. Keep in mind that some fresh grads only earn around 3000 RMB per month.

The first "cheap" buffet is actually a charity food bank donated by nearby Buddhist temples and believers. They ask for a small amount of money to keep people's dignity and to make people feel they are paying for their food. But that pricing can hardly pay for the salaries of the staff, not to say the food. So, if one is in real difficulty, one can walk in, say the Buddhist prayer, and have some free food. All of those Buddhist background "charity restaurants" will be more than happy to feed people in need.

Chinese buddhist vegetarian(often vegan, sometimes not) foods are amazing, and has been developing for over a millenia, and there's regional differences just as normal meat-inclusive regional cuisines. We have had vegetarians in China for a long time, and these people are generally Buddhists or Taoists. I am so envious. I'd love to be able to see all of the beautiful places and cultures of the world and try the food :) I've always loved China and Chinese culture since I was a kid. My first love of it came from training in Shaolin Kung Fu and watching all of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan's movies and all the other martial arts films. Then learning about the history (my favorite is the Three Kingdoms Era, thanks to Dynasty Warriors getting me into that and me wanting to learn more!). You can separate a country and it's culture from their government. Doing that will let you find truly beautiful and amazing things.

The special pattern on it is the texture of a cushion cloth. During the compaction process, a cushion cloth needs to be placed between each layer of tofu. This cushion cloth is similar to the traditional thick medical bandage gauze, and these textures are produced during the compression process. It's not for the sake of aesthetics.
