As for running around it, to me it seems pretty demanding and I don't know if anyone has ever done that, but I'm pretty sure some ultramarathoners can! As I said, biking around lake Ohrid is a must! My wife and I are currently in Ohrid and hiked up to the Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon when we ran in to the gentleman in your video. He asked where we were from and if we had any questions. We recognized him, said no thank you, and walked the other way. Thanks for posting your video as you might have saved us from a similar situation!
Sarah and Marlek, we watched your video before coming to Ohrid, and no shit, walking out of Samuels Fortress this morning (03/28/24) the exact same guy comes up to us as we made our way to St Johns. I couldn't believe it, he had almost the same outfit on and even the headphones. I asked him if he knew the 3 minute history of Europe? He looked a little surprised, I then told him he was a RUclips star and a few other choice comments. I kid you not! He's still here hustling.
Im from Ohrid his name is Slave he was local legend and very inteligent person but something bad happen to him in the live and he have mental problem...sorry for that come and visit Ohrid again!
We bumped into this guy today in Ohrid, he was hanging around by the ticket office of Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon. He approached us offering us information about the history. I immediately recognised him thanks to your video and said no thanks 😂. I was going to show him this video and tell him he’s famous but I wasn’t brave enough 😂
I actually think the guy is very knowledgeable about his whereabouts, and even though I am sure he is not a certified guide, I would have asked for a complete tour of the town for a reasonable price.
As a Macedonian Ohrid is our crown jewel. Don’t worry about this old whacky man he has nothing to do with Macedonians and Ohrid in general. The Ohrid locals have already told me this man has been dealt with a few times. I hope you enjoyed Macedonia as a whole and hope you come back to Ohrid again!

Wow , i've been to ohrid and had the best time of my life meeting some locals . That guy couldn't have been raised there speaking good English like that .
13:22 "Ja neću ljepšu" - Mile Kitić i Južni Vetar (ruclips.net/video/sjZqOMTKNrk/видео.html). The music of Ex-YU and successor republics is still huge in Macedonia and across whole region even 30 years on. That song was from 1985/86 time! :) It translates to "I don't want one more beautiful" from Serbo-Croatian.
I have had similar encounters with these type of people too. Had one in Montenegro, who flagged my car down as we were parking in a random village. All friendly saying hi etc, then we suddenly found ourselves in a awkward sales pitch for a boat trip in the guys house.
I’ve learned traveling all across Europe that if a stranger approaches you first in a touristy place without a clear intention , get away immediately. It is always something malicious.
I must say, unfortunately I agree with you. We've learnt from the few bad encounters we've had and now in future we will be more direct with anyone that approaches us to understand whether they want money or not. Hopefully in sharing our experience others will learn from it as well and not find themselves in this same situation 😊

Hey you guys! We’re Capitu and Bentinho, a brazilian couple backpacking as digital nomads. We’ve been in Ohrid 1 month ago and happened exactly the same. It was so embarrassing! I’m so sorry for you guys.
Hello Ohrid is my hometown and I still live here and I wanna apologize for that experience meeting someone like that in Ohrid is literally one in a million chance since everyone in Ohrid are very friendly towards visitors I’ve made so many friends over the years from all over the world that I still stay in contact with them. Now about the lake is the second oldest lake in Europe it’s estimated to be between 3 to 4 million years old. with a unique aquatic ecosystem of worldwide importance, with more than 200 endemic species. It’s also one of the deepest lakes in Europe with the average depth being 155 m while the max depth reaches 288 m. Macedonia's side of Lake Ohrid was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. The fish you showed in your video the Ohrid trout it’s illegal to fish, it’s only found in Ohrid and it grows very slow it gains 1 kilogram in 7 years. People still catch it illegally risking jail time and they sell it for 20-25 € per kilogram when all the other fish range from 2 to 5 € per kilogram. This is just a tiny bit of history of the lake, I really hope you come back again and explore more the lake and the city. Greetings from Ohrid with love. ❤️

I'm Macedonian but born and raised in Toronto. I was shocked for about minute after seeing this but then it dawned on me, you had an encounter with a scam artist. Unfortunately - poorer places, like the Balkans causes its lazy and destitute folk to work in some shady ways. Although, not entirely unique to poorer places or the Balkans. I've had experiences in Paris, where I listened to music on the subway and "smiled" so clearly I had to pay because I was enjoying the work... Also had an experience in Holland where I signed what I presumed to be some sort of social rights petition - only to find out I was being scammed and forced to pay $5. They had my signature after all. Scam artists sure are real. Sorry you encountered one in Macedonia :( An experience to remember for sure haha!
I agree that he is a scam artist and his behaviour does not represent other Macedonians. Our experience in North Macedonia was amazing and we really enjoyed our time there, aside from this one encounter 😊
I am a regular visitor to Ohrid since some time and love the people and food and landscape. On rare occasions there sometimes are some weird people trying to trap tourist. Way less than in most other tourist spots, but it can happen anywhere in these hotspots. I only had nice talks to locals in balkans, especially off the tourist centers their hospitalitiy is almost on a crazy level :D (just see the locals responses here - they mean it!) You should come back in spirng or autumn, thats the best time to see Ohrid, go hiking on Galicica mountain and see a classic restaurant with traditional food (mix of greek, balkan, turkish). Hari was a good choice, it's locals favourite kebap :)
I think that guy deserves a Will Slap for his ignorance...but you guys handled it well, and it goes to show that it's not all as perfect as it's being portrayed.
Thanks so much Dan 😅 honestly, we used to try to hide the bad moments but we really want to share our full experience and not only the good parts. We're hoping this video will also warn others to be careful and not find themselves in the same position as us 😬

Awesome to see some fellow Africans travelling around the Balkans! I was in Ohrid a few weeks ago and was just as lovely! Sorry about the experience with that guy, I think you both handled it well! 👏🏼Best of luck with the rest of the trip 🤙🏼
Hi Tristan! 😄 So great to hear that you enjoyed Ohrid! 🇲🇰 We really enjoyed North Macedonia and aside from this one negative encounter, we actually had a wonderful time visiting this beautiful country 😊 Thanks so much!
Certain clues lead me to believe that man is not a local, including his accent, although he may now live there, and I've never met a Macedonian with that name (if it's even his real name). This is not typical behaviour from locals. I have had similar experiences when travelling Europe and usually the perpetrators have been Roma (I'm not suggesting all Roma are like that) and I have been aggressively followed for refusing to reward their scams with money. One time, in a neighbouring country, a scammer was making string bracelets in a crowded tourist spot and his accomplice approached me and slipped one on my wrist before I even realised what was happening, even though I didn't engage with him, then asked for payment - even though I kept walking the whole time. They made threats when I removed it to return it to them. You handled the situation very well and are broad-minded enough not to label others based on this unpleasant incident. Happy travelling.
I'm so sorry to hear about your unpleasant experiences! Unfortunately these kind of encounters come along with traveling and being targeted as tourists in many countries around the world. We know we aren't the only ones who experience things like this and we wanted to share our experience to warn others. Other than this man, every other local we encountered was really lovely. Thank you we really appreciate that 😊 Macedonia was an awesome and vibrant country to explore 🇲🇰
I am so sorry to see you had this awful experience. But you learned from this experience and now we learned from it too. (Although I would like to get on a plane and go sort out that guy out for being so rude to you) Thank you for sharing this with us. I would never thought that people could be like this. You guys rock and I adore you. Lots of love, Belinda.
I met this guy too at the museum church. He did the same thing, he was pretty annoying. I happened to have almost no cash so i just gave some coins which were just worth a few Eurocents. I am also making a video now with him in it...
Oh my goodness! No ways 😱 we have got quite a few comments from locals who have told us more about him so it seems pretty common but still not necessarily the best interaction. We will keep a lookout for your video and see what your experience was like 😊
Hey Sarah and Marek, thanks for the nice video! But what an awful encounter with this horrible person! I just stumbled across another video by a German travel vlogger (called Funkloch) about Ohrid and guess what: there was this dude again! His name seems to be "Slave". Allegedly he is a guide and philosopher. I also found a blog article from March 2018 (the blog is called itinari) where he is called "the Ohrid weirdo" :D I commented under the German vlogger's video and mentioned your horrible experience with this man in order to warn other travellers who want to go to Ohrid. Keep your positive spirits up!
Thank you for your comment. Wow, we did not realize he was so well known. Thank you for sharing this interesting info with us. We were completely caught off guard by him and hope others don't have a similar experience. We appreciate your support 😊
@@SarahandMarek Slave has mental problems and does not act normal! He should have stayed at the mental hospital instead of getting released so early(or at all)! that man should be charged with a fine :) bet he wont do that again, sorry about that experience. Thanks so much for this beautiful view of my country, very thanks for not calling it north Macedonia :) safe travels!
I wish I've seen that local. Because I'm from Macedonia and I would've kicked his ass. He is trying to cash on tourists and is shaming my country and my people. I'm so sorry you had to endure that. I'll share this with people from Ohrid to find this person and arrest him. He's probably doing it to other people
We, macedonians, when describing Ohrid local people, we are saying: They are very nice, very fine people, very honest people, they have very great sence of hospitality...BUT jou just met them out of tourist season. That is where you made a mistake...
Hello, my dears. Among us live more than 10% with schizophrenia, paranoia, and other psychological problems. So don't worry. In the western world, these people are under surveillance and in hospitals. But in poor parts of the world, these people have no one to help them, so they live "freely" and so are more visible to us. Don't get mad about such people. They are just not like us. And some of them look and behave really normal, so u won't get the idea that something is wrong with them. But also in some parts of the world, people are also dumb as hell. I live in Germany, and as a Turkish person, living gets really tough here sometimes. Racism exists also in well-educated countries. Anyway. Don't get demotivated by such people. Peace
Thank you for your explanation. It is very sad to think that there are people struggling with these problems and unable to get help. We certainly don't let experiences like these get us down. Hope you have a great day :)
Thanks a lot for promoting my beautiful city and Macedonia! If you visit Ohrid again, come to my shop (Escape rent a car) and i will provide you with a free scooter for one day to explore the area around Ohrid. Greetings from Macedonia
Thank you for posting this. I’m going to Lake Ohrid next week, and now know what to do if we see him coming. Unfortunately there are people like that everywhere and it’s certainly not what Macedonians are really like.

I saw this man back at the church of St Clement and St Pantleimon in Ohrid when I was there in August 2018. He is an idiot with serious issues. He started the same way with us and then wanted money. This is not the Macedonian way I can assure you. Macedonians like many nationalities in the Balkans are very hospitable. Sorry for your experience
We're so sorry to hear that you also had an unpleasant experience with this man. We certainly don't associate his behaviour with other Macedonians, we had really wonderful experiencses while in your beautiful country and we did not allow this negative encounter to change our opinion on North Macedonia 😄🇲🇰

Great video guys. Wow looks like a beautiful place, bet it's very busy in summer. Loved the drone shots. Sadly there are ugly people every where. I feel sorry for the other local people of the area having that idiot representing them. Obviously from they way he started to verbally attack you he's just a money swindler. He's not worth a second thought. I love a doner too, and they looked good, and cheap too. Definitely adding Ohrid to my wish list. Thanks.😀
Thanks so much for your support Cindy 😊 it was a tough moment but we soon recognized that it was just one man who may have a lot of issues. We definitely don't take his actions as a representation of Macedonia, we had so many great experiences and we definitely won't let this one take away from everything else 🇲🇰 we are missing doners! They really are delicious 😋 Ohrid is absolutely stunning and worth a visit!
Terrible behaviour by this man! Myself I am always skeptic when strangers approach me, unfortunately that is often necessary....Beautiful country and he basically tried to destroy your experience of it!
It was a horrible encounter but luckily the only negative experience we had while exploring Macedonia, which is a beautiful country and he certainly didn't ruin our experience because we didn't let him 😊🇲🇰
That nasty treatment by that man is not common happenings in Macedonia. I have recently been to Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola. I must say this country is awesome and people are lovely and hospitable. I'm definitely going back again this year.

i was in Macedonia in May and they did scam us on parking lot. The asshole who put time went and changed it to an hour early and then when we came there was other guy doing shift and started demanding more money. I don't want say every Macedonian is like that, but it kinda ruined the experience there and we did experience more harrasment from the locals there to buy something and etc than compared to Montenegro or Albania, where people were actually super friendly
And did you ask him for his permission to record him and to post him on a social media , consider your not nice action and if he really attacked you as you claim it he did , wouldn't it be better to report this man to the appropriate authorities instead of .......?
Sorry for what you've experienced there, but people in Ohrid are not good with tourists at all, they just wanna rip them off. Even though most of the money come from us who live in Macedonia they still try to impress the tourists and get their money. If you ever come to Ohrid again please avoid all the taxi drivers and the people that offer accommodation, they are rude af. I live in Belgrade but when I heard his english with ohridian accent I was discussed no matter what he said. And yea, our name is Macedonia, without North.
No no pleade don't apologise 😊 it was not the best interaction but we absolutely LOVED our time in Ohrid and in Macedonia 🥳 the locals were all very friendly towards us so we have very good memories of our time there and would love to go back again 😃
Scammers like that guy are everywhere. I’ve had worse experiences in Paris or London for example but you did the right thing, just ignore him and move on.
The dude has a Serbian or Croatian accent, and that name of his is nonexistent in Macedonia. Nothing against Serbs or Croats-I just think he’s a traveling scammer. It is beyond me that something like this happened to you guys in Ohrid. Maybe I’m blind, but I’ve lived here for 30 years and never seen a scammer haggle tourists, not have I heard a similar story from the many tourists I’ve befriended. I hope the authorities see this and bring him in for questioning.
Based on some of the other comments, others have had a similar experience with this man a couple of years ago. Which is very unfortunate. This was our only negative experience in Macedonia and other than this moment we really enjoyed exploring your beautiful country 😊🇲🇰
I saw this guy . He hangs around ST. Clement church and charges €3 I told the stay away from me and stop telling me any story. Why because I know what's coming next. I have been to 4 other Balkan country and this kind of "emotional Blackmail" is rare. Ie, since you won't give me cash I will guilt you into it.. It is very popular in Egypt and Cambodia in tourist areas and parts of Turkey and Heraklion, Crete. Thanks for the share and If I see him .. Will just ignore him. If he follows me I will take photos or videos in case he harrasses me.
People should start asking him for money and then shaming him; "Well maybe if you didn't drink it all...the third ryche is over you know...I'm offering to show you the philosopher's stone and you don't want to pay?" Ha ha 😄
I think this was an isolated incident. All the other people we encountered in Macedonia were really nice 😊🇲🇰 We really enjoyed visiting your beautiful country!

I was shocked from the thumbnail thinking he legitimately threatened your lives but though what he was saying was wrong I still think that clickbaiting it with a thumbnail of him saying something he never said is just wrong. If anything our reputation as a country is completely tarnished and if this goes viral it's just a nail in the coffin.
Apologies if you think that it was clickbait. Unfortunately, he really did say those words to us. We were simply shairing our experience. Its really sad that this has happened but we still had an amazing time in your beautiful country.
North Macedonia is the name of the specific country. Not Macedonia. I am sure you know of the Prespa Treaty. Incidentally for the benefit of your geographic literacy, take note that the only place on Earth named Macedonia is the Greek province of Macedonia, inhabited by a solid population of 2,500,000 Ethnic Hellenes (Greeks).

That is such a great comment! 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha oh my goodness 🤣 thank you so much for telling us!

I actually found that whacky man hilarious, introducing himself as a philosopher. I am sure he is knowledgeable about the place, but definitely doesn't know how to sell a visit. He is obviously not a certified guide 😂
So sorry to see how that man treated you. 😞 You dealt with it amazingly 👏 It was quite shocking 😳 he's one sad man! Well done in showing us the lovely places 👏 xx
It was quite shocking but in the end we feel sorry for that man 💛 We still really enjoyed Ohrid and found North Macedonia to be a beautiful country 🇲🇰 thank you for watching Rella 🥰
Wow, you guys didn't deserve that all, that man was horrible! :( Thank you for including it and the words at the end - I would have never thought it's something to look out for when travelling!
I hope you guys enjoyed your time despite that man!! Another great video as always!
Thank you so much for your kind words 🤗 we don't necessarily enjoy sharing this kind of negativity but we think it's important to show the good and the bad and hopefully this video will prepare others so they don't find themselves in the same position 🙏🏼💛
This guy is completely crazy! I am from Macedonia and I know him verry well. Don't pay attention to people like him, Ohrid is really beautiful place with really beautiful people. Glad to be here❤️

Wow , i've been to ohrid and had the best time of my life meeting some locals . That guy couldn't have been raised there speaking good English like that .
So beautiful and so Macedonian.
If ever come again in Ohrid im on your service to show more of the city and different views of the city.I wish all the best. Thanks that u visitin our city
Thank you so much, that's very kind of you 😊
Ran into this guy yesterday (June 2023) in the old town. Still trying to run the same scam. Thanks for the video. I knew to avoid him.
...and Ohrid is a fantastic place to visit, people have been wonderful and the food is great.
100% agree with you on that one 🤩 thanks for watching!

Macedonia is really beautiful country and in my countrys they hate each other me personally i dont hate them from where i am and yeah i might visit in the future Macedonia

Hey there 😄 no need to apologize at all! We absolutely loved our time in Ohrid and are really excited to go back again one day 😁 thank you so much for all this information and telling us more about the lake 😀

Its not something that happens everytime. People in my city, icnluding me are very friendly and for strangers, we can tell them every information for free, there's no need for paying. Bad experience from bad people can't give too much info for our citizens. Very sorry for this bad experience, but remember, not everyone are same.

Ohrid people are known for their hospitality 😂😂😂
This is horrible,I'm Macedonian and I am appalled.. I'm sorry that happened to you guys..
I am a regular visitor to Ohrid since some time and love the people and food and landscape. On rare occasions there sometimes are some weird people trying to trap tourist. Way less than in most other tourist spots, but it can happen anywhere in these hotspots. I only had nice talks to locals in balkans, especially off the tourist centers their hospitalitiy is almost on a crazy level :D (just see the locals responses here - they mean it!)
You should come back in spirng or autumn, thats the best time to see Ohrid, go hiking on Galicica mountain and see a classic restaurant with traditional food (mix of greek, balkan, turkish).

That guy also appears in this video. Sorry you experienced that! Ohrid is really nice!

I also found a blog article from March 2018 (the blog is called itinari) where he is called "the Ohrid weirdo" :D
I commented under the German vlogger's video and mentioned your horrible experience with this man in order to warn other travellers who want to go to Ohrid.

I saw this man back at the church of St Clement and St Pantleimon in Ohrid when I was there in August 2018. He is an idiot with serious issues. He started the same way with us and then wanted money.

Wow... you should have gone to the police.
It really was such a strange thing to happen 😐
