The heat may have caused the fabric to tighten. I’d say hit these with the leather dye on the tongue to get an even black coat and the splotches out.

Try angelus black paint mixed with a fabric medium and a heat gun.

He used a different color way to dye them. It wasn’t the color way you are using

a good try but when you painted the sole with black it looks like you hit the paint on the material
