I love Alvaro’s palette but the color do not reflect what in in his palette as the set is very old and the card is a promotional item that is for selling paints...Viridian is the only green on his palette and it is green not blue, his palette does have cerulean, cobalt and French ultramarine blue because it is very granulating, pyrrol red, deep scarlet, and Mayan orange are his reds, Hansa yellow deep and yellow ochre are his only yellows, burnt sienna and neutral tint are accurate, however omitted from this palette is lavender it is probably because he prefers Holbein’s lavender because it’s more opaque than the Daniel Smith version he uses Holbein titanium white from the tube to do highlight when needed and he has been know to use cobalt green also from Holbein because it is also more opaque than DS. I loved the painting you did with theses colors it was quite beautiful. Thanks for posting!

Yes Alvaro uses Holbein, as does Joseph Zbukvic a few tubes here and there, both men are sponsored by Daniel Smith and therefore promote Daniel Smith. Many years ago when I started to learn watercolors (30+ years) Joseph Zbukvic used Holbein and was not sponsored he used their paint because he loved the color and variety as well a opacity in certain colors. Alvaro was the same way with no sponsorship he used Holbein and while great artists such as Alvaro and Joseph Zbukvic can make great art with any brand of paint of good quality what they say the use is usually based on sponsorship. These days of course Daniel Smith is the top brand most big names use I also happen to know that preferences are very different. Both Alvaro and JZ say they use Arches but they prefer Saunders Waterford while sizing is similar in both brands (hard sized) its they drying time that makes the difference. If you were to examine both Alvaro and JZ’s work from late 70’s-early 90’s they were using Holbein and you can tell the difference (or at least I can) transparency is nice but opacity it what anchors objects in your painting giving them weight and feeling solid for a prime example of a master of the medium look at the work by Chien Chung Wei his paintings have a painterly look to them almost like an oil but distinctively watercolor. Only by using a balance of transparent and opaque watercolors will you become a true master if you use only transparent colors then you then you are only going to understand half of the medium understanding both will make you master!

@@tmp0922 wooow. Im now overwhelmed with information! not that im complaining. 😊 🎨 But im suprised to learn that these Western artists use Asian paints. It only means, they really value the properties of those paints even if theyre more probably expensive because of the location differences.. I certainly agree that great artists can really make great art regardless of the brand (for as long as theyre decent performing brands, atleast). And i also can relate so much to the love for some opaque colors..particularly the PG50! In every brand i own, i atleast try to scout for a cobalt green, also caput mortum or violet iron oxide and the PBK11, greenish umber. Those 3 are not comon to small palettes but i always look for them whenever i paint. Im not always after transparency as well, as i love some pigments that are opaque like the cobalts and some cadmiums.. I am actually more particular to lightfastness, because i have experienced in gradeschool some fading artworks, and its really sad.. 😔 But yes, im happy that you shared some information i need to know about watercolor icons. 😊 🎨 It makes me feel the need to get to know them more and their works! 😊

OMG the rain and the birds in the background, it must be so wonderful where you live. I haven't heard birds like that since I was very young. Made my day! Your videos are so thorough. I like the format of your swatches. I especially like the small paintings showing the direct application of the color samples.

Fantastic job, especially making it so clear that the set doesn’t accurately represent those used most by the artist! I would have been so disappointed if I’d bought the set, and it’s good to know DS celebrity palettes can’t always be trusted

You're welcome and thanks for the appreciation as well. Yes, at the end of the day, these celebrity artists are there to show their style and needs. And it doesn't always match everyone's style and preference. 😊
