Great review my friend!! For my friends that are transitioning from that first cheap set we all buy thinking they are professional colors to a good base set... this is the set I always recommend first. I like that my students learn color mixing as they go and once familiar with mixes slowly adding in and exploring more primaries a cobalt violet, burnt sienna and cobalt teal come next lol. Great video my friend xoxo cheers from Canada
Haahha. The primaries then our favorites.. For me, i can live with only the primaries plus my 3 weird combo - Teal (PG50), Caput Mortum (PR101) & Perylene Green (PBK31). 😂 Yes, these 6 coloe are great for beginners. Beginners need to learn the value color mixing. 😊 Thank you for dropping by, my friend. Take care always and happy 🎨!
@@AllanJayQuesada I so smiled and laughed my friend you are forever my fellow pigment nerd that I love talking to. Glad your doing awesome, thank you as well xoxo loooove my pr101 hahaha now I want to try perylene green , I'm in love with rich green gold d/s right now haha... I'm going to write it down!!!
this is so helpful for the skin tones with a limited palette...I saved this and come back to it over and over...and finally took notes on the color combos.
I am a beginner and I just purchased the DS essentials set and had no idea how to mix colors but your video has helped me tremendously! I have saved the video to refer back to. I love how you took these six colors and made a beautiful landscape painting. Thank you very, very, much!!
thank you for the compliment J. J. since this is a limited color selection, i did my best to achieve those mixes for the demo. i wanted to prove that even with this limited color selection, one can actually achieve a wide range of colors. 🙏🎨
Hahaha. Thank you!☺️ Well, if there will be 7 essential colors, Burnt Sienna would be the 7th. It's essential for instantly making grays (mixed with Ultramarine) that are deep yet transparent. ☺️
Great video! I've been wanting to upgrade to a professional set and this looks like it would be the one. I usually swatch colors, but not a mix of them. I need to do that!
Oh, man, but do I genuinely wish I had seen your video before spending my hard earned cash on other paints! Bought a whole lot of Cotmans and have been very dissapointed with using them at low intesity. I was told that as a complete beginner, I should not buy something like Daniel Smith, but that advice was sooo wrong! Instant subscribe.
@alisonmeier5826 😊 i have used Cotmans, and they're good as student grades. I think you should be using pro grades already because you are seeing Cotman's low intensity.. i always advise artists to get the best supplies that they can comfortably afford. So, by all means, get yourself an upgrade. I believe someone else's trash can be someone else's treasure. So go ahead and gift your Cotmans to someone else or sell it so it won't be wasted. Thank you for watching and subscribing. 🙏
Ty so much I love your reviews and for beginners it's so much knowledge. I m using camel artist water colors, I m looking to upgrade to better ones, sennelier, or mijello not the pure pigment, or Daniel Smith or shminke. In India we do not get many options, plus they r expensive.
You are so welcome! and Thank you too. You are lucky you have Camlin in India as for me, those are the best if we match the price to quality. But trying out those brands you've mentioned would really give another level of experience. Try one or 2 from those brands you've mentioned and that is enough for a blast already. :)
@@AllanJayQuesada i already have senellier aqua mini... I am torn between mission gold or ds. Thank you, I learned a lot about this limited palette AND a very useful swatching method. Just curious… did you make a stencil to do your setup? And which size do you cut your paper to for this six ring notebook?
Hii. You're welcome and thank you too. No, i didn't use stencil. I just use the same measurement in every swatch. But making a stencil from cardboard is a great idea! 👍 the paper is around 6in x 8x .

These watercolors should not be confused with an American soldier who allegedly did a bad thing in Subic in 2005. Anyway, it's a very versatile set for anyone who wants to paint with high quality watercolors on a budget.
oh that guy. tsk tsk.. Yes, this is a great starter set that could actually be enough if you are on a budget or if you want to be minimalist and basic. :)
Basically, buff titanium's color is a pastelled brown. In the absence of white, you may achieve a close to buff T. color by adding more water to brown. Use the 3 warm primaries to achieve the better brown. 😊
It would have been more helpful if the video wasn't sped up during your mixing as we could not see the ratios you were using, a very important detail. I tried to slow the playback speed down but it was impossible to see what you were doing.
Sorry about that. Although I've shown some possible mixes here, the main intent of the review is a general view of the paints. Also, I myself have no exact ratio for those mixes. It's more of estimates until i get the desired color. It's more of the possibilities we could get from the colors, not a mixes tutorial. Although it would've been more useful to include an actual speed video, I couldn't do that as it would make the video very long, which will be inconvenient to the majority of the viewers who request for videos shorter than 30mins or better if shorter than 15mins. I think the best idea is to have a dedicated video that tackles on possible mixes and the ratios of those mixes using these 6 colors.

Hi Allan, how do you mix the colors? Do you mix it on your palette first and then apply to paper, or you do a glazing ( wet on wet)?
