So i did one of these back in the beginning of the year, just a classic little sit down life update, and i thought it might be nice to now before autumn do like a mid-year update: money, burnout, david, work, life, stress, just what has been going on, and what things have gotten better or worse, since back in january.
    I talk about:
    - all about burnout
    - being overworked
    - money stress
    - signing book deals
    - going home to sweden
    - summer ideas
    - reaching goals

I started a PhD program last autumn and after 6 months of adjusting I decided to start a project that I call 'I don't care'. I will still do everything that I need to do, I will just care less which equals I will stress less. This is huge for me, I'm overstressing too much on every task, and every time at the end turns out it was pointless

I hit the same wall in my grad program this past spring, and right as I about to lose my mind with self-induced stress, I lost a family member suddenly. I requested a brief leave of absence from my program so I could grieve, but, due to...basically administrative reasons, my LOA ended up needing to be 4 months. I told myself I'd take the extra time off school to work on creative stuff. I ended up doing next to nothing beyond my ~10 hour a week volunteer gig. I didn't realize I needed the give my entire brain a break and it took a sec to forgive myself for being "unproductive." I'm starting school again in a couple of weeks. I'm letting go of the 4.0. It's been a fun run, but it's not worth the overwork I gave myself just to prove I'm good at this. I'm gonna do fine and I'm gonna enjoy my education more. I hope the "I don't care" project gives you what you need for school. Academic stress is its own unique flavor and everyone needs to find their own way to manage it. I feel relieved to have found a mindset that works for me and I hope you experience the same!

Leaving a little comment for the Algo + the Mustards' mortgage!🙃 At 41, not having a home or a retirement account means that I don't have the luxury of "not caring" and going on chill mode. It's at times a lot (going through a very deep burnout cycle here), but I actually like having stakes so high--there's a meaning and a purpose to all this work + pain: if I can finish this marathon, my little family will be okay. What more motivation could you want? :)

I definitely think theres a big difference between being "passionate" and "caring too much" when it comes to your career. In my opinion it can become a pretty considerable problem if you start to subconsciously tie your personal worth with your ability to meet your professional or career goals. Your performance at work does not equate to your worth as a person but I feel the more you let yourself get invested (especially when it dips into unhealthy obsession territory) with meeting your goals and accomplishing new and impressive things in your work life that if those things start to go sideways even a little it can massively derail your entire emotional equilibrium.
If you're too invested in your professional performance missing a goal can make you feel like a complete failure, and losing your job can make you feel worthless and hopeless (speaking from past experience haha). I think its important to continually ground yourself in your non goal oriented passions as well. Things you do for fun and people you see outside of work who you value. Keep touching base about things you believe add value to your life outside of their ability to bolster your professional career. Make sure you always remember that life can be an amazing experience whether youre meeting your career checkpoints or not.

So interesting about the caring bit. I definitely care a LOT about a LOT. And after flirting with burnout for a couple of years and having a short affair with it as well I think I landed in passion and caring: hell yes, but not for everything and not all the time. I really need to pick my "battles" (I don't really want to call them battles, but can't find a better word for it). I can care a shit ton about my career, but I really need to mind taking a break from it even more if I do, and maybe not then also have a bunch of side thingies and hobbies that I also care 1000% for. Might sound a bit obvious but I really haven't lived like that until now. I guess for me it's very related to performance anxiety as well and really adding things to my weekly schedule that have zero performance too it.
Anyway, happy to hear your doing good. Ha en underbar semester!

I have always been an extremely moderate person and am probably near the middle on the 'caring' spectrum, likewise on the 'feelings' spectrum, I've never really been over-the-top excited (or devastated) about anything I've ever accomplished... and I'd just like to say, its not the way to be. Be passionate, be excited, be devastated, and then be ecstatic again!

Is it not possible to get fixed interest rates in the UK and US? Or do/did people gamble with a flexible rate hoping that it would go down even further/remain low?

I think regarding “caring more” or “caring less” depends on the stage of your career and also whether you’re self-employed vs not. I’ve certainly been on both spectrums and it’s not a static thing (many other factors)
Ultimately it comes down to whether the job you’re doing is aligned to your personal interests / passions? Is it what you do giving you a sense of growth, excitement, joy, reward (this can be either financially or emotionally)…?
It’s also about “what” you spend your time on, given that we all only have 24hrs a day. By caring less could mean you’re freeing up more time to do what truly brings you joy.
There’s no right or wrong answer - just do what’s best for yourself 😉

You have more discipline than I do I keep writing of course work on other stories whilst I wait to get inspired. Hard when it's a topic I am not familiar with. I stopped writing for 20 years and only started poetry again in the last year or so. Hard when you have health issues hampering your progress and life got in the way. I tried something else creative for a while but it failed in the end and decided to go back to writing. I like your frank humour and honest reflections thanks for that. I am considering self publishing as tired of being at mercy of publishers as most tell me it's nearly a lottery to get published by any well known publisher. You are lucky you have a supportive partner and audience. Hope you two have a lovely holiday :)

  • @AnnaLiiindgren
    @AnnaLiiindgren 29 дней назад

For me I think the caring needs to correlate with passion/love. For instance if you don't love what you work with but put your heart and soul into every minute of it you will not last very long (giving much without getting enough back). So now when I think just ok of my job but not more than that I also need to lower the caring bit consciously to not be burntout in 2 mins. But with a passion project I can allow myself to care and work harder because I also love it as therefore can stand more of the pressure it brings 🤗

I love these updates and appreciate your candidness! I think as far as caring too much about work, I come from kind of the other end - I work in scientific R&D, and while there is creativity, a lot of the job is technical skills and repetitive tasks. in that kind of environment, I often find it really difficult to care *enough* about work. the research I'm part of is important, but I don't find my job energizing. so I'd say it's certainly possible to care too little! (I'm working on getting a different job outside of R&D for a bit to recalibrate haha)

Thank you for mentioning the violence/genocide. I hope you guys meet Owen Jones. He should have you on. It is sad to see the state of the world in 2024. Humanity is very slow at learning. And as long as we don’t regress! Wishing you a wonderful time in beautiful Sweden.

I adore your stylish videos. Thank you. Being over twice your age I imagine, I have some experience with passions and power-glides. I express my passions/callings whole-heartedly. When they fade or drop dead, I accept that life has switched gears and I don't try to conjure up a calling that isn't arising from the depths of life. No pushing and no pulling. Surrender is my way and listening to the body is the fundamental method. That isn't for everyone; well, hardly anyone. It requires radical trust and there are no guarantees. This way of living conflicts with the popular idea of imposing one's will ie. making choices.....

Hej Jenny, an interesting book on "all the thinking" and caring, I'd highly recommend Dr. Amy Johnson's book "Just a thought". Enjoy!
