I'm old enough to remember Peter Cullen's Mario. After Cullen, Lou Albano, and Walker Boone, Charles Martinet's voice in Mario 64 sounded like Mario was sucking on helium.

As an Audiobook narrator, I understand why they changed the Mario voice. It's one thing to hear a character say "Here we go" in that high pitched quasi-italian accent in a menu screen of a video game. It's another thing to hear that voice having conversations throughout the entire movie. I can see that getting real old, real fast.
Everyone has completely forgotten about the cartoon where he has a Brooklyn accent, the game voice didn't become popular till later so that's all people will recognize.

That and the head of the project Ernie Hudson is actually one of the people Sam leaped into in the original series. He is Magic the guy Sam leaped into to save his brothers life in Vietnam. Al's daughter is also a big part of the show.

No, it's not how he sounds in the games, but it IS the Brooklyn accent he's always had in early Mario media such as the animated cartoon from the 80s and the earliest manuals define him as New York Brooklyn italian. It's one thing to prefer one over the other, but it's another thing to say it's not at all Mario.
Yeah, I think people are expecting the newer fully stereotypical Italian voice. Even the previous movie and animated/live action show was Brooklyn Italian.
It's also Chris Pratt trying to take the most subtle and nonoffensive opproach to the Brooklyn Mario variant possible which just equates to the same raptor tamer voice we hear every other hollywood production. If the actor isn't Italian, it's offensive to do the accent. If the actor is Italian, it's offensive to perpetrate racial stereotypes. If the actor is white, shouldn't it be portrayed by an Italian instead. If Italians are white, shouldn't he be portrayed by a black actor instead. There's literally no way to not be offensive so you might as well just get the character right, which we already knew was not going to happen when Starlord was cast. As much as I love him. There was literally no reason Martinet should've have been cast.
I'm not a huge fan of the games, nor do I have the emotional investment..... But I personally don't really wanna watch a Mario movie if he's gonna sound like the "classic" "it's-a-me-Mariooo" voice. I know the voice-actor is highly regarded, but I just don't really wanna hear that voice when I'm watching the movie. Pratt's Brooklyn accent definitely is more evident in his second line-reading in the trailer. Honestly, I'm not mad at it. But again, I'm not a hardcore Mario fan. I grew up hearing Steve Urkel as Sonic the Hedgehog, yet watching the recent "Sonic" movies, I don't feel the character is "ruined" in any way. What do i know?
On the Critical Role note, that was Khary Payton aka Sovereign Uriel as the Penguin with the crown in the Super Mario trailer. I hope you have listened to the Critmas one shot holiday special. I recommend watching it before starting C3 even though it's not related.
It is interesting that the “supporting cast completely changing around the detective” every movie is happening with two different franchises currently, what with Knives Out/Glass Onion and Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot series (which just got a third movie announced). I love that the murder mystery/who dunnit genre seems to be making a come back.
Bro, I had not seen the Violent Night trailer yet. That looks PERFECT! David Harbour looks perfect in that roel. And I couldn’t out my finger on it but I was thinking something in the same vein as y’all were, that this was if Die Hard was actually a Christmas movie.
I will take the unpopular opinion, I didn't mind Chris’ voice. I mean we have only heard I think a total of 7 words so it's really hard for me to tell if there is an accent and how bad it was. Also for me, I think 2 hours of the actual Mario voice would grate on me after about half an hour. And I think like Adam said people are ripping on Chris Pratt but it is the director who would have shaped how they wanted Mario to sound.
Lemme give yall some history in case you werent around at the time. When Super Mario 64 came out there was a TV show titled "The Super mario bros super show", in that show mario has a heavy Brooklyn accent because that's where he from. Only when SM64 released did they introduce the italian accent and people thought it was very weird when we had the super show voice. This is that same scenario all over again but reverse, chris is touching on a brooklyn accent it seems instead of italian. And I think that for a theater length film, having pratt's voice with (a hopefully more notable) accent would run smoother than Charles' high pitched voice we've come to know and love
I agree. People need to give this a chance. People need to wait 1 or 2 more trailers before they go hating on Chris Pratt's voice as Mario. I honestly think Chris can pull this off.

Mario is originally from Brooklyn. They are going back to the roots and giving him his actual accent again. Not the over the top italian accent Charles made for video game sound effects alone.

Charles Martinet only made sound effects for the games, his voice was not meant for dialogue. There is a reason Mario does not have any dialogue in the games. And from what i heard, Charles Martinet is not in any condition to voice an entire movie or more. So him voicing Mario is out of the question. Also, its just the *teaser* trailer. Judging from what we see and hear in the teaser alone is ridiculous.
The Quantum Leap show is actually a sequel to the original, they mention Sam, Al and Ziggy in it and they have dropped hints that the main character of the show might actually be leaping in order to find Sam and bring him back home but we don't know for sure though because he lost his memory, before he leaped he modified the machine so that he would be able to set a course on where he wanted to go and what bodies he wanted to leap into so that he could eventually stop leaping at a certain destination supposedly where Sam is. I recommend you watch the show yourself to form a proper opinion on it, I personally think it's alright it lacks some of the charm that the original had but its good to just stick on and watch when there's nothing else there.

Quantum Leap is a sequel. They don't state it in the trailer, but the reason this new guy entered the accelerator is to try and find out what happend to Sam. Ernie Hudson's character is actually somebody that Sam once leaped into.
Guys, let's be real... If they had him doing the original high-pitched thick Italian accent, I bet y'all still act up with it. You'd say it gets grating after a while, or you can't take anything he says seriously or, because people today need something to complain about, say the accent is "problematic." I don't mind the voice from what we have so far. I agree with some that it has that 90's Mario cartoon vibes, which I'm sure was probably the intention. I like the voice change. Mario's game-voice is okay if you hear him say like three sentences in an entire playthrough. ("Let's a go!" / So long bowser!") But I don't want that satirical over the top accent for 90 minutes. The important part is that he has the energy, the audible joy of jumping. ("Woo!", "Wa-ha!", "Yah!" when he is jumping / triple jumping. And Pratt's voice has that joy.
I've been waiting for your reaction to the Violent Night trailer!! It feels like the same energy as when the red band deadpool trailer first dropped, but with so many other things tied in to make it even more perfect, we finally have a proper, adult, Christmas badass.
I have to say, I know a lot of us adults grew up with Nintendo and want him sounding a certain way. But my 5 year old has already watched this trailer 20 times and will not care one bit how Mario sounds because in the end this movie is for him haha

Mario's original voice was a guy with a New York accent , not Charles martinet so it's not far-fetched that he has the Brooklyn accent which you slightly hear him say on Mario's last line in the trailer. For anyone who didn't know
Back in the 80s the Mario tv show was New Yorkish. I guess he’s doing it in that vein but it’s not quite there. Charles Martinet (real voice of Mario) is a professional voice actor, he could easily tone down the sound bite vibe and do a better cadence.
No. 1. He wouldn't be a Pokémon who repeats the same thing over and over again. He would TALK just like Charles/Mario have done before. 2. There are other people and scenes in the movie without Mario... 3. You just tone it down and do what he has done many times before, look up the footage. 4. It's fine to do New York/Brooklyn accent, but it's not strong enough and it sounds like Chris Pratt! Not different enough, too famous. Doesn't fit.
Mario isn’t supposed to have an Italian accent, he’s canonically from Brooklyn, so Mario and Luigi will have New York accents in the movie, so it won’t sound like Mario usually sounds, but it will sound like Mario is technically supposed to sound. Chris Pratt definitely wasn’t the best choice to do this, but the Brooklyn accent isn’t the problem you might think it is.
Here's my gripe with the Mario situation: Everyone else is doing a CHARACTER with their voice. Chris Pratt just sounds like...Chris Pratt. FURTHERMORE The original voice actor for Mario is IN THE MOVIE VOICING OTHER MINOR CHARACTERS...BUT NOT MARIO?!?!? YOU HAVE HIM. USE HIM. Also the fact that this first trailer BARELY has the MAIN CHARACTER in it speaks VOLUMES about how much faith they have in his performance.

Odd how you mention Jaleel White's Sonic, who was mostly the voice in the animated series. Chris Pratt's Mario sounds like he did in the animated series, The Super Mario Brothers Super Show, where he was voiced by the late wrestler 'Captain' Lou Albano. Martinet added the accent Mario is known for these days. So do bear in mind that they're going with OG Mario voice, not new Italian accent voice. Especially since OG Mario was just a dude from Brooklyn who ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom. Let's not demand a recast for the voice. Seriously. People forget that Martinet isn't the original voice of Mario.
There's probably a reason why people remember his voice instead of the OG. No one cares about the history, he sounds completely wrong to what people know. That will keep people away. If they wanted to do the whole Brooklyn thing, maybe they should've got a VO with a Brooklyn accent or could actually fake one, but they picked midwestern Chris Pratt that can't do the accent.

With this modern mindset of "Change it, we don't like it!", we NEVER would have had Michael Keaton as Batman or Heath Ledger as Joker. Both decisions were mocked and criticized to hell and back. Keaton was known for Mr. Mom style rom-coms and Ledger was mostly famous for '10 Things I Hate About You', another rom-com. Both turned in amazing performances. Let's give Pratt a ferking chance.
Fun fact about the Weird Al trailer… The trailer is a parody of a parody trailer that Funny or Die did back in ‘13. Even the title itself is a parody of the one they used in that video. The meta levels of this movie are OFF. THE. CHARTS.

Quantum Leap just got additional episodes added, if you liked the first run give it a try. I like you are a huge QL fan. Have rewatched the original series more than a few times 🙃😂😂. Is it as good as the original.. nope. But it has potential which in this day in age for a network tv show is something .. also there are some connections to the OG show. Not going to spoil it, but if that’s what’s holding you back, the trailer didn’t go into any of that.
I'm actually liking Quantum Leap. The first two episodes are rough but it gets its footing in episode 3. Some really good moments. For those curious this show does not erase the OG. It is after the original and references to it and honors what it set up. Sam Becket is a relevant plot point in the show.
Dont get me wrong, I love Mario's dumb video game voice, but anyone who thinks a feature length movie with Mario's dumb video game voice for 2 hours straight would ever sell is clearly and completely insane. You're the insane one for not understanding that you can adjust the voice and that there are other people in the movie and scenes without Mario and that some actually like... you know, MARIO. This isn't Mario. Even using the non-video game voice would be ok but this wasn't good enough for that. Watching the dubbed footage of the trailer shows how good it could be.

Adam, I'm also a huge fan of the original Quantum Leap series. This trailer is misleading because it makes no references to the original but it is a continuation. Episodes 1 and 2 aren't great in my opinion (the first episode isn't actually the pilot, they are releasing that as the 6th episode...I think it's #6 anyways) but #3 is great and #4 has a great monologue from a Ernie Hudson about his connection to Quantum Leap. Definitely give it a watch.

Mario is originally from Brooklyn. They are going back to the roots and giving him his actual accent again. Not the over the top italian accent Charles made for video game sound effects alone.

Charles Martinet only made sound effects for the games, his voice was not meant for dialogue. There is a reason Mario does not have any dialogue in the games. And from what i heard, Charles Martinet is not in any condition to voice an entire movie or more. So him voicing Mario is out of the question. Also, its just the *teaser* trailer. Judging from what we see and hear in the teaser alone is ridiculous.

The Quantum Leap show is actually a sequel to the original, they mention Sam, Al and Ziggy in it and they have dropped hints that the main character of the show might actually be leaping in order to find Sam and bring him back home but we don't know for sure though because he lost his memory, before he leaped he modified the machine so that he would be able to set a course on where he wanted to go and what bodies he wanted to leap into so that he could eventually stop leaping at a certain destination supposedly where Sam is.
I recommend you watch the show yourself to form a proper opinion on it, I personally think it's alright it lacks some of the charm that the original had but its good to just stick on and watch when there's nothing else there.

Quantum Leap is a sequel. They don't state it in the trailer, but the reason this new guy entered the accelerator is to try and find out what happend to Sam. Ernie Hudson's character is actually somebody that Sam once leaped into.

I don't mind the voice from what we have so far. I agree with some that it has that 90's Mario cartoon vibes, which I'm sure was probably the intention. Plus, I think I heard somewhere that the Italian voice of present Mario wasn't as thick as it was back then or something? I'm no expert, lol
I like the voice change.
Mario's game-voice is okay if you hear him say like three sentences in an entire playthrough. ("Let's a go!" / So long bowser!")
But I don't want that satirical over the top accent for 90 minutes.
The important part is that he has the energy, the audible joy of jumping. ("Woo!", "Wa-ha!", "Yah!" when he is jumping / triple jumping. And Pratt's voice has that joy.

Mario's original voice was a guy with a New York accent , not Charles martinet so it's not far-fetched that he has the Brooklyn accent which you slightly hear him say on Mario's last line in the trailer. For anyone who didn't know

Charles Martinet (real voice of Mario) is a professional voice actor, he could easily tone down the sound bite vibe and do a better cadence.
No. 1. He wouldn't be a Pokémon who repeats the same thing over and over again. He would TALK just like Charles/Mario have done before. 2. There are other people and scenes in the movie without Mario... 3. You just tone it down and do what he has done many times before, look up the footage. 4. It's fine to do New York/Brooklyn accent, but it's not strong enough and it sounds like Chris Pratt! Not different enough, too famous. Doesn't fit.
The new Quantum Leap is absolutely a continuation of the Sam Becket story. They just failed to say that in the trailer.

Mario isn’t supposed to have an Italian accent, he’s canonically from Brooklyn, so Mario and Luigi will have New York accents in the movie, so it won’t sound like Mario usually sounds, but it will sound like Mario is technically supposed to sound. Chris Pratt definitely wasn’t the best choice to do this, but the Brooklyn accent isn’t the problem you might think it is.
Here's my gripe with the Mario situation:
Everyone else is doing a CHARACTER with their voice. Chris Pratt just sounds like...Chris Pratt.

Chris Pratt's Mario sounds like he did in the animated series, The Super Mario Brothers Super Show, where he was voiced by the late wrestler 'Captain' Lou Albano.
Martinet added the accent Mario is known for these days.
So do bear in mind that they're going with OG Mario voice, not new Italian accent voice. Especially since OG Mario was just a dude from Brooklyn who ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Let's not demand a recast for the voice. Seriously. People forget that Martinet isn't the original voice of Mario.
There's probably a reason why people remember his voice instead of the OG. No one cares about the history, he sounds completely wrong to what people know. That will keep people away. If they wanted to do the whole Brooklyn thing, maybe they should've got a VO with a Brooklyn accent or could actually fake one, but they picked midwestern Chris Pratt that can't do the accent.

I swear, it's ridiculous. With this modern mindset of "Change it, we don't like it!", we NEVER would have had Michael Keaton as Batman or Heath Ledger as Joker.
Both decisions were mocked and criticized to hell and back. Keaton was known for Mr. Mom style rom-coms and Ledger was mostly famous for '10 Things I Hate About You', another rom-com.

Quantum Leap just got additional episodes added, if you liked the first run give it a try. I like you are a huge QL fan. Have rewatched the original series more than a few times 🙃😂😂. Is it as good as the original.. nope. But it has potential which in this day in age for a network tv show is something .. also there are some connections to the OG show. Not going to spoil it, but if that’s what’s holding you back, the trailer didn’t go into any of that.
I'm actually liking Quantum Leap. The first two episodes are rough but it gets its footing in episode 3. Some really good moments.
For those curious this show does not erase the OG. It is after the original and references to it and honors what it set up. Sam Becket is a relevant plot point in the show.

Dont get me wrong, I love Mario's dumb video game voice, but anyone who thinks a feature length movie with Mario's dumb video game voice for 2 hours straight would ever sell is clearly and completely insane. You're the insane one for not understanding that you can adjust the voice and that there are other people in the movie and scenes without Mario and that some actually like... you know, MARIO. This isn't Mario. Even using the non-video game voice would be ok but this wasn't good enough for that. Watching the dubbed footage of the trailer shows how good it could be.

Adam, I'm also a huge fan of the original Quantum Leap series. This trailer is misleading because it makes no references to the original but it is a continuation. Episodes 1 and 2 aren't great in my opinion (the first episode isn't actually the pilot, they are releasing that as the 6th episode...I think it's #6 anyways) but #3 is great and #4 has a great monologue from a Ernie Hudson about his connection to Quantum Leap. Definitely give it a watch.
