Speaking on the topic of "How to describe D&D to the older generation", my buddy got his job to allow him and the other employees that played, a conference room and a monthly snack budget of $200 because he pitched it to them as a "team building exercise that encourages creative problem solving and teamwork overcoming obstacles."
Structured group improv is another decent way to describe it.
OMG, "team building exercise"! I need to try this at work!
I got props at work for 'keeping team morale high'. With Warhammer FRP.
D&D is a much more effective alternative to all the BS "team building exercieses" many companies force their employees to do. Good job, my dude!
theatre improv with dice, is my go to.
As soon as you said (about Keyleth) "At least she didn't jump", my RUclips cut to an ad for goldfish crackers. I swear their algorithm has gained sentience.
Jay: "They're a bunch of nerdy ass voice actors who play dungeons and dragons."
Me with Muscle Memory: WE PLAY DUNGEONS AND DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG-OOOONNNS!!!
DND BEYOOONNNNND
DEY DOOK URRR JERBS!!!
I did it too
WE PLAY DUR AN DUR!!!!!!!!!
WEPLAYDUNGEONSANDRAGOOOOOOOONS!
Keyleth: stumbles for a brief moment.
Jay: Intense 'we're basically gods' flashbacks
I spit out my drink at that part.
"At least she didn't jump." I'M FUCKING DYING OVER HERE!!!
@@nickthedreamer4434 He made that sound WAY darker than it needed to lmao
I guess it's Matt's turn to "Roll the Dice."
'...It's too many dice for me to roll.' -Matt Mercer
Travis has actually been playing Thor for ten years in various animated and video game material. When he was brought back in for the Marvel's Avengers game, commemorating his tenth year as the character, he decided to get a tattoo to honor it. Instead of getting something typical like Mjolnir, he got the old Germanic/Norse runic word that means "to be worthy" on the side of his wrist. He said he got it so that every morning whenever he brushes his teeth or shaves and sees it in the mirror, it serves as a reminder to himself that he's worthy of the life he has - amazing career, great group of friends, and a wonderful wife (Laura Bailey) and son (Ronin).
Travis is a national treasure
He's also voiced Hulk in the Super Hero Squad show
You know the perfect character that incapsulates the Iconic idea of what Grog embodies with Travis' favorite catchphrase in Critical role Vox Machina campaign
*"I WOULD LIKE TO.......... RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE !!!!"*
"Don't fall Keyleth."
"It's difficult terrain..."
"You don't even know the half of it."
THAT TOOK ME OUT. GOLDFISH FLASHBACKS.
Goldfish flashbacks indeed lol
"at least she didn't jump"
me: having war flashbacks to campaign 1
Spoilers for campaign 1 and potentionally the show
Is Keylith the one who jumped and fell in lava too? I can't recall.
@@BNOBNO14 YES LMAO She did those things on two different occasions. The lava was around episode 70-ish I think and the cliff/goldfish moment was around 80-90 ish.
Jay: “I shall do my research and summarise these voice actors most well known works! How hard can it be?”
*opens IMDB*
Jay: “well…. crap.”
I first legit wanted to praise this Show
for using the Age-Classification it has in a 'natural feeling way',
totally unlike High Guardian Spice,
but then i took it back.
I see many issues, including: The Bard-Character; i get where that concept is coming from, i really do (i know that much
about D&D); but its just not funny or anything. What a useless Character.
Theyre falling in a Trap that i legit think they literally knew exists: The Trap of
Misusing the '18'-Classification.
@@slevinchannel7589 scanlan is the best part of campaign 1 mechanically and story-wise hes not useless lmao.
@@labradude Youre missing the point of my comment completly;
as i'd expect of someone who ends his comment with lmao.
@@slevinchannel7589- this is part of the characters progression story. He starts out this way. They all sorta start out as eff ups.
@@slevinchannel7589 well fuck, I guess they'll have to replay 8 years of d&d games to change the story.
"Thinking of a rhyme for dead dragon. Cause I... I guess we're killing one." Love this line from Scanlan.
A perfect line to encapsulate Scalan. He a goof off, but their is a subtle change when he gets serious.
Just embodies that sharp whit and heart.
They were fully funded for their original goal of $750,000 in 45 minutes of the Kickstarter being up
They hit 1mil within an hour of it being up
3mil within 10 hours
The final total was 11.3mil
The rat bastards.... their kickstater went live about an hour after mine. I was just looking for $4,500 and barely made it. Critical Role sucked all the air out of the room. Stupid uber talented adorable weirdos.
That is insane and worth it.
Couple of Easter Eggs, the two kids were voiced by Sam's daughter & Liam's son. The Murder Hobos, is the name of the group that the lead animator plays in D&D.
"The tenth doctor is in this..."
*Smiles like a girl getting her first valentine*
Yeah, I felt that
Critical Role's show is up. pReview'd's reaction is up. I've never been more excited to have another grown man whom I've never met call me a "peach".
Preach Peach ! Accidentally introduced my Gf to them and she’s been asking all day if their reaction to Vox is up yet
She calls them “our reaction bois “
The sheer KNOWING panic of that “don’t fall, Keyleth!!” cracked me the hell up 😂
Marisha's the creative director. Same position she had at Geek&Sundry before they split off and made their own company. She's awesome.
"Don't fall!"
"...you don't know the half of it."
Also, does NOT surprise me the guys do RP. Good on ya!
Jay being a Laura Bailey Stan just absolutely kills me. We all worship Laura. ♥️
* Cue the harp noise * Laura Bailey! 🤩
[insert angelic choir here]
@@k_enigmatic6605 I was expecting it!! Every time someone says her name.. Harp!
CUPCAKES
@@Reblwitoutacause Between that and leaving The Game Awards twice just to come play DnD she is nerd through and through.
Jay: The cupcake moment.
You mean the moment Laura Bailey won D&D?
The moment that made a certain trickster go 'oh yeah, she's good alright'
Didn’t know this was happening. So excited for your reactions.
Side note, the beginning of the video, when it went all Gregorian Chant, has now inspired me to make a Cleric for the Church of the Oxford Comma. His name will be Ford Ox (because Ox, Ford) and he will be a Knowledge Domain Cleric
"I'm a Critter, he's not."
Under my breathe - "Not yet." :)
It happens to the best of us and I say that from experience. Critical role is my company into DND and nearly 5 years later I do not regret it
I have called it 'poker night' for years! And after episode 3, Adam is so going to cosplay 'No Mercy Percy'.
Nerd poker is the exact same words I've used to describe game night. Thanks, Jay!
It warms my cold dead heart to see Jay fan boying over Critical Role.
Same here
Ashley Johnson was in Growing Pains not Family Ties, she was also the Forensic Scientist in Blindspot
Thank you. Was looking to see of anyone else made this comment before me
Also, the waitres at the end of the first Avengers movie. Of course, didn't know who she was at the time. And Growing Pains was so long ago, Not until I watched the shows theme again did I see it.
WAIT, SHE WAS!?
I watched that as a kid! XD
@@duanegiddings4981 Wait what? How did I not know this?
@@jamescandalino3458 Yep,, even got a ine to be interviewed by a reporter where she thanks Cap.
I laughed when Adam mentioned Tiny Tina from Borderlands. She is voiced by Ashly Burch. Ashly is a friend of Critical Role, has been on the streams and live shows and is also a writer for this animated series!
As well as being the guest on-stream when THAT ONE THING happened in C2
@@tylerts97 Doh! Of course! Long may he reign!
She's also one of the writers for the show
@@mattr7994 Yes. I believe I included that.
Level Up Montage is the single best D&D tip I have heard in a few years! THANK YOU! I am going to implement that in my next Campaign.
I paused the video and messaged my party immediately. We are about to run ToA from lvl 1, so lots of chances to do this ahead.
A montage of that nature needs more cowbell.
They had to homebrew the gunslinger class for Jaffe/Percy when they transitioned their game from Pathfinder at home to 5e when they started streaming.
Per usual Vax rolled high on his stealth check which explains why Liam didn't get any intro by Jay
🤣🤣🤣🤣
He did talk about Liam, saying how he voiced Illadan, now he didn't name him as Vax, just said he plays their rogue
Fun detail: the kids in the village were voiced by Sam and Liam's kids.
Oh no my heart
As soon as Trinket was introduced, my first thought was, "Jay's going to want a Trinket."
Welcome to the critter family, Adam....one of us! 🧡 the saga only gets better from here
ONE OF US ONE OF US ONE OF US
Jay's excitement setting all this up, and get to shine talking about this, I am so here for it! Also, never seen Adam so adorably and spontaneously react so much like a 14 year old girl that happen to get eye contact with her big crush from across the hall, in such a way as he does in 08:37! Just the pure loveliness!
He did look so adorably pleased and shy. I wanna gif him in that moment with blushing cheeks.
Just watched the "cupcake" incident, and hot damn that was a clutch moment (and hilarious).
I have maybe got a dozen episodes live on twitch , but just happened to catch that one. The critical role chat is always crazy, but at that moment straight up "went plaid." All time great moment
"Did not think I'd be seeing Gnome taint this morning" - a sentence you think you'd never hear be spoken
I didn't expect to be seeing a gnome go down on a blue elf!
17:11 "At least she didn't jump..." *** Insert Captain America "I understood that reference." GIF here ***
Adam had the drink this time! Then immediately personified Jay.
Gunslinger is from Pathfinder, which is the system they used prior to the stream (which is also why Pike is a cleric of Sarenrae, who does not exist in the D&D pantheon). Then they decided to switch to DnD 5e, and converted the Pathfinder gunslinger class to fit with 5e.
17:00 I burst out laughing when Jay made that reference to the "We're gods!" moment
The animators, unbeknownst to Matt, animated an NPC in each applicable episode that Matt uses his voice or his voice with an accent, to look like him.
He was amused when he found out, it's almost a play on the "Sams Matt shirt" joke.
"I think [Laura Bailey] is everyone's favorite?" I mean... he's not wrong.
Fun tidbit, the kids in the Shale Steppes are played by Liam and Sam's actual real life children!
David Tennant's best line ever.
*slams hand on war table* "FUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!"
"I'm totally Percy!" Oh... oh no...
Will be interesting to see how this develops
I'm new to the channel, because I'm basically going through and geeking out to all the different reactions to this show, but you guys have such a fun vibe! Can't wait to check out your other stuff :)
Minor correction but Marisha is the Creative Director at CR. Travis is the CEO. She was previously the CD at Geek & Sundry where CR got it's start.
I, for one, really enjoy hearing you guys talk about your home game! Hearing you talk about why you love D&D gave me the warm fuzzies because I love it for all the same reasons. Also, your suggestion about level up montages in game is a cool idea! I think I'm gonna tuck that one in my back pocket.
Looking forward to watching this with you guys!
I play a Druid Necromancer in my current campaign. So I can talk to the dead and plants. FURNITURE IS MY DOMAIN!
Adam, episode 1: I don't know anything about Critical Role.
That line in light of Adam in episode 12 of this is hysterical.
I've missed Vox Machina.. I love the other campaigns but nothing hits like the originals! I love the subtle moments of the future couples they through in!
omg Adams excited little dance in his seat when he found out that Tennant is in this :) That was adorable.
I liked how they translated the Ranger's primeval awareness ability (kind of mixed with favorite enemy)
I'm so stupid happy I found your guys show/movie reaction show you guys had me in tears XD
Also little note lol Gunslinger is actually a Pathfinder class critical roles original game before it came to twitch was a Pathfinder game but Matt transferred it to 5E for the stream and he brought things from their Pathfinder game to 5E like Sarenrae who is Pikes goddess and the Gunslinger class
They had to be very careful in this show with the DND references cause WoTC are extremely tight on their copyright rules and they would have had to have been very careful with what they can and can’t mention
As a Patron supporter, I don't always have time to watch your full watch-alongs, but your RUclips vids are a slice of joy. I just gotta say that your content always makes my day. Thanks for being your awesome selves. Much love from Kentucky.
Laura Bailey and I have very special dice cut from the same Meteorite. I met her once in Gencon in 2018. She's awesome *cue harp music*
I can't wait for the next to and Adam's complete swoon we'll see in E3.
The moment Jay started tearing up really hit home for me. You let those tears flow friend!
i’ve never watched y’all’s stuff before but the respect you paid to Marisha got an auto sub
So glad you're reacting to this, helps with the exposure, and shares the love! Really hope you guys like it, I've loved the first 3 so far. Eps 1-2 are "new" and then ep3 is where it gets to what most of us critters have seen.
The actress who plays Lady Kima is Maribel in Encanto.
You guys should watch Viva La Dirt League. They live action tons of video game tropes.
I love coming back to this video. Especially the beginning with Jay, a current Critter, explaining the cast to Adam, a future Critter, and Adam going :O at all of them. And then when Jay pulls David Tennant out of his sleeve and Adam bypasses :O entirely to jump straight to shy smile and shoulder swaying I love it.
Ashley Johnson was also one of the leads in the TV series Blindspot and had a cameo role in the first Avengers movie (she was the waitress that was crushing on Steve).
Congratulations 100,000 subscribers... Woohoo 🎉🎉🎉
Reminds me of the gold old days of a couple months ago when Wheel of Time was in premiere 😂
I love that the series starts out with Rigel's character urinating on Matt.
Let's be honest, CR as a whole is filled with moments of Sam doing shit to piss off matt in the most fun ways.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!! I have been subscribed long before the FIX IT came about and finally my name gets called out I couldn't have picked a better video to get called-out thank you😃😃
The tears were the sweetest thing EVER. It's a real thing and I felt the same way!
I love how you guys get excited to talk about your home dnd game and your characters... That's basically every dnd player ever :) We're all in this together :P
The part where the creators of the IP have been able to keep this much control through the adaptation process is also pretty special.
1st episode and im already hooked this is going to be fun

Ashley Johnson is also Gwen Tennyson in Ben 10 Alien Force through Omniverse
I’ve already been following your channel since a year or more ago, but now that you’re covering Vox Machina, I’m definitely excited to see you guys react to this. Fellow critters unite!
Honestly, the part at the end where you're just laughing even though it's not funny just then? Hard same, I was just giddily laughing in excitement almost the whole time, especially during the dragon fight, because did you _see_ that gorgeous bastard? That whole fight was _stunning._
I’ve been waiting allll day for you guys and this one. I already love this show! Animation is sooo much better and different than I thought it was going to be. Can’t wait for the rest!
I've watched these about 3 times, I just love your honest and over abounding joy in this series.
I can't wait till season 3 and The Mighty Nein!!
This new world I’m about to enter is gonna be AMAZING!!!! and I’m gonna have to spread the word on this immediately
*furiously taking notes about Level Up Montages*
YOU MENTIONED THE CUPCAKE MOMENT!!!! :-D :-D :-D
100k ?!!!! Congrats !!!!!!🎈🍾
I still rewatch season 1 CR to this day. It’s still a masterpiece to me.
My group actually started doing the "level up montage" thing recently!
Didn't have a name for it though, that's awesome! Thanks Jay!
The "level up" montage sounds awesome. I hopefully will be able to convince my DM to do it.
The cupcake moment was indeed amazing
David Tennet is my favorite Deatheater turned Doctor.
Level up montage is a brilliant idea!
Hey Peaches! Congrats on the 100k!!!! Little off The birthday wish but HECK YEH!
I finally watched it so I can finally watch your reactions! This show was completely unexpected and wonderful to watch! I’m a HUGE critical Role fan so I was VERY pleased to see this come to light
As I am watching this I noticed you guys made 1K!! Congrats bios!!!
“Don’t fall Keyleth. .. Bwahahahhahah!”
This is the best example of worlds colliding. I'm so happy right now!!!
I am so happy to see you reviewing this and that Adam is on board. And if you like Percy *now*... well, buckle up ;)
Congrats on the 100k you guys totally deserve it. Keep up the awesomeness!
Awesome video guys as usual. It's great to see the passion for D&D, and your enjoyment of these stupidly talented actors that have helped to elevate something that has for so many years been scorned and dismissed. This first episode is a perfect introduction to Vox Machina and if it's any indication - this season is going to blow our
minds.
"oh are we best friends now?" That's how I made a bunch of friends in college, love my dnd buddies
I'm so happy you are reviewing this! We need all the exposure we can get
We play Dungeons and Draaaagooooooooooons!
CONGRATS ON 100K!!
Congratulations on 100k subscribers. Well deserved. 🥳
On Marisha ray and voice acting: during Halloween episodes, they always stick to a theme, and one year it was “characters you’ve voice acted.” And Marisha wearing an army costume said she was “Female Soldier #2” and noted she wasn’t glamorous, but she let Marisha make rent on the small ass studio apartment she had at the time.
When my two favorite worlds collide!!! (I stan Laura and Travis 💕 but Percy is totally my favorite character!) I am so impressed with the animation (I already knew the voice action would be S tier). All of the characters fit how I imagined them.
This episode was amazing, so much pay off for existing fans, and a great hook for new comers. While so much of the dialogue was great, hands down best line of the episode went to Scanlan with his “Thinking of a rhyme…” line, just perfect in every way.
100k let’s gooooooo!!! So proud of you two! Keep killing it peaches!
