This actually follows the story that Critical Role has been telling in their D&D game. It was funded by their record-setting Kickstarter campaign - they had asked for $750,000 to do one episode of high-quality animation, and ended up getting over $11 million dollars from individual donations, enough to make an entire season. Amazon has already green-lit a second season.
What's extra neat about this is that all the IP is 100% owned by the creators, who also designed and voice each of their own characters.

Welcome to the world of Critters.
Once upon a time, many years ago a talented voice actor was about to have a birthday, and to celebrate he asked Matt Mercer, another well-established voice actor and talented GM (Game Master) to run a role-playing game for a group of friends... who also all happened to be voice actors. So, a group of nerdy ass voice actors sat around and played D & D.
The group had so much fun they made it a regular thing, Felicia Day of 'Geek and Sundry' heard about this game and approached them with the idea of streaming it... and it became a hit in its field, eventually growing into its own company and channel known as Critical Role. Parting on good terms with their previous home, Felicia Day has a small role in the beginning of episode 2.
Vox Machina was the group of characters they played in Campaign One, there has also been a Campaign Two, in which the cast plays a whole new group of adventurers Both are set in the same world, but on different continents and Campaign Two is set a few decades after the end of Campaign One. Each campaign ran for over a hundred episodes which are all over three hours long, and we are over 25 episodes into Campaign Three. They have also put out a bunch of other content, from talk shows to shorter games in other Role Playing worlds. They have played live shows to sold out theaters, become the number one channel on Twitch, have merch stores in multiple countries, have comics and actually published books of fan art (there are some talented as F*** Critters) they also started a nonprofit charity to... "Leave the World a Better Place."
The whole cast would all tell you that they never expected any of this, that it has been a wild ride and they are just trying to hold on and be worthy of it.
A few years ago they started looking into the possibility of an animation, but no one was buying, or at least not on their terms, so they went to the Critters to try and raise upwards of $700,000.00 over the course of 45 days in order to make a two-part special for themselves and their fans.... The Critters laughed, and smashed through not just the goal amount, but also ALL of their stretch goals within an hour. By day 45 they had raised nearly 11 and a half million dollars, added a bunch more stretch goals, and the two-part special became a season. Amazon took note and is basically funding a second season to get the streaming rights, but the show is created by Critical Role. Those Nerdy Ass Voice actors are the producers and have full creative control. Most of the people they hired, from writers to artists and composers are also fans who love and know the story and its world. It is one of the truest examples of a project of love I have ever seen.
During the production of the animation they put out a series of videos to keep their fans in the loop of how things were going. Interviewing the people behind the scenes and giving non spoiler info about the production. It's a good watch and will really help you understand the devotion and love that went into this project, as well as introduce the cast. Personally, how the lead composer got the job is one of my fav stories. Who knows, maybe you'll even see one of your friends. Here is that play list.
    ruclips.net/p/PL1tiwbzkOjQwJdoNetaNJE1zZVOE7xi8u
Once again, welcome to this new world, hope you enjoy your visit and stay for a while... it's a devoted community with a lot of heart... and dicks... so many dicks... LoL. Let Chaos Reign!

I love how the folks of Critical Role at the beginning acted like even having a comic was more than they'd ever achieve and that an animated show would be the bucket list item. And then they all sat there completely stunned when they realized the Critters had funded the entire Kickstarter amount in under 24 hours. And they're still so humble about the whole thing. It's beautiful and heartwarming.

Note: In D&D there's this thing called a TPK, it means "Total Party Kill" thats what happened with those "heroes" at the very beginning of the episode. TPKs are fairly common in D&D usually from starting a fight with something way out of your party's skill level, or someone was carrying something explosive and someone else used some ill timed fire magic. The second one is way more common.

Bidet! So happy to be seeing more channels finally picking this up.
The series is based off of the first campaign of Critical Role, a streaming show "where a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors sit around and play Dungeons and Dragons." Vox Machina is the name of the group of heroes from their first campaign which started streaming over seven years ago, and started as a home game for several years before even that. The main cast - all the original players - consists of some of the biggest names in anime and video game voice acting - Matthew Mercer (who is the DM in the live game and subsequently voices all the NPCs originally), Laura Bailey (Vex'ahlia), Ashley Johnson (Pike), Travis Willingham (Grog), Liam O'Brien (Vax'ildan), Taliesin Jaffe (Percy), Marisha Ray (Keyleth), and Sam Riegel (Scanlan).
This animated show started as a humble Kickstarter project in the hopes of just making a one-hour special and resulted in one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns and earned them enough money to make two seasons *and* being picked up by Amazon for distribution. They've incorporated a lot of other big names in both voice acting and live action that have become either friends of theirs or fans of Critical Role - Grey Griffin/DeLisle, Khary Payton, Tony Hale, Stephanie Beatriz, Indira Varma, Rory McCann, Anjali Bhimani, Dominic Monaghan, David Tennant, Kelly Hu, Felicia Day, Logic... the list goes on and on. Liam and Sam even have their own children in the series (two of them in this episode!).

How can you explain Critical Role to someone who's neer seen it?
Literally Matt Mercer's intro every episode:
"Hello, everyone, and welcome to tonight's episode of Critical Role! Where a bunch of us nerdy ass voice actors sit around and play Dungeons & Dragons!"
Show got so popular they got a Kickstarter campaign that raised millions of dollars so the CR crew could greenlight an entire season of the animated adventures of the campaign they play with the DnD environments and characters they created. Nerds dream come true!

Critical Role is a D&D game that was streamed on Twitch by a bunch of voice actors. I believe Percy (gunslinger) was in the movie Mister Mom and Pike (healer)was in What Women Want. They're all very talented and if you ever played a video game theres a good chance you've heard one of their voices before.

My first awareness of Titmouse was Metalocalypse. The animation on that one was deliberately designed to be cheesy and cost-effective, but if you watch long enough, you can connect the style, mostly in comedic timing, and the way the gore and grossout is presented.

It's Cool to see this through the eyes of someone who doesn't know anything about it before hand!
As some people already must have told you by now, Legend of Vox Machina is the animated retelling of the first Campaign of Critical role, starting with 2 episodes inspired by events from before the Twitch streaming began and continuing with the second "chapter" of the DnD Campaign.
This might be the reason why the characters feel so fleshed out, they've spent litterally hundreds of hours playing them.
The players of Critical role are all voice actors, so they are doing the voices of their characters themselves, along some really cool guests, like the General dude with a scottish accent played by David Tennant!

The guy scanlan pissed on this episode is made to look like Matt Mercer(the GM for the D&D campaign this is based on), he also voiced the character. Every episode has one such minor character. He also voices a few other characters(originally he voiced ALL of the NPC's). In this season he also voices Victor the black powder merchant. Also, Vox Machina has 3 half elves in it, the twins and Keyleth. Grog is a half giant and PIke and Scanlan are gnomes.

Without going into spoiler territory, some storylines have been somewhat or significantly sped up/cut/streamlined for the adaptation. Which, you know, is understandable since they're trying to condense like, 50-60 hours of gameplay into 12 not even half hour episodes. So especially these first two episodes, but also the rest of the season has a lot of setup and foreshadowing for future plot threads.
And this is a tangent, but that's one of the things I _really_ appreciate about this show (and stories in general), that since the story is already laid out in its entirety, you _can_ lay these foundations and make sure the seasons actually connect with each other and can setup fulfilling long-term storyarcs (at least assuming they get more than the currently greenlit 2 seasons, because boy there's enough story there for at _least_ 5. And that's just from the first campaign). And in my experience stories (especially longer ones) tend to be a lot better, if they were planned through from the beginning (at least roughly), before the the first installment gets published/airs/whatever. I mean look at Harry Potter (leaving aside the problems in the writing of the world for now, the _story_ and the payoff of things that were set up early was still very good) and Avatar the Last Airbender. And then you get things that only get confirmed season to season, or book to book or whatever and the story just kind of goes all over the place, or always feels rushed, or like consequences don't exist, or like there's no consistent character developmentm or like the seasons just don't have anything to do with each other. Looking at you, Star Trek Discovery, Merlin, Supernatural (which started out planned through for 5 seasons, but then people liked it so much they made another 10 fucking seasons and the story just kinda went to shit. Now granted, the characters were still great (mostly) and the nonexistant longterm planning by far weren't the only problems in the later seasons, but I'm getting off topic. Well. More off topic. I'll stop now.)
ANYway. I really like this show. Hope you'll enjoy it too.
