The first 2 episodes are from pre-stream. This started as a home game they played for like 2 years. They played it as Pathfinder tho and switched to homebrewed DnD 5e for the live stream. Starting with episode 3 is the 2nd arc of campaign 1, there were 5 arcs. Actually the campagin started as a 1 shot for Liam OBrians's(Vax) birthday, he hadn't played dnd for awhile and Matt for a present said he'd DM a one shot... I think only Matt, Liam and Taliesin had actually played dnd before. Sam i know hadn't and he made Scanlan as a throw away since it was just a one shot. He asked what the worst race to play was and was told a gnome, then he asked what's the worst class and was told bard so he made a gnome bard, and got the name from an online dnd name generator hehe....

If the editor wants to tell them without spoilers: the first two episodes are based on a pre-stream event and used to introduce the characters, episode 3 is when the pacing slows down and they adapt an actual arc from the campaign (the amazing arc that’s considered to be when Critical Role truly founds its footing).

Trivia time! This all started with Liam O’Brian (Vax) getting nostalgic for D&D after learning his friend Matt Mercer was a DM and asking if he would run a 1-shot adventure for Liam’s birthday. He did, and invited a bunch of other voice actor friends to join. It was the birthday part that let Laura Bailey (Vex) realize she and Liam share a birthday, so they decided their characters should be twins.

Critical Role has made such a difference in role-playing. It's amazing to hear their bucket list items at the first episode of Critical Role, to hear the things they wish could happen (like running a one-shot for Vin Diesel or having their own animated show), and them just act like those are impossible, only to have them all years later come true.

The original Kickstarter was just for this and a few episodes, but they made like 15x their goal so it became a whole season comprised on this arc and a later Arc from the stream, skipping over the first couple arcs from the stream that were overall less integral to the longterm plot.

It’s funny that Rick says that the Gunslinger was more of a Pathfinder class because that’s exactly what it is! CR started as a direct continuation of the cast’s Pathfinder home game; they switched to D&D 5e just before turning it into a web show. That’s also why campaign 1 starts when Vox Machina are all level 7/8 as opposed to lower levels.
This starting/introductory arc with the dragon is also based on events that happened whilst it was still a home game, whereas the rest of season one is following the Whitestone arc, which starts somewhere in the mid-20s of episodes in Campaign 1

Couple of fun facts for you:
You mentioned Khary Payton being Aqualad in Young Justice, but Phil Bourassa, the lead design artist for Young Justice and several other DC movies, did the lead character design for this series.
You called out Lady Allura as looking very much like Daenerys, and the fun coincidence is that she is played by GoT alumni Indira Varma (Lady Sand).
Pike and Scanlan are both gnomes, while Lady Kima (the gruff shorter woman on the council) is a halfling.
Vex and Vax being mistaken for one another is a running gag that never ends. EVER. They are also half elves, as denoted by their pointed but not oversized ears.
Grog is a goliath, but I think they weren't necessarily able to use that term due to D&D owning it.
The studio that worked on this is Titmouse, who made Legend of Korra, Metalocalypse, Big Mouth, and many more.
The group we see at the beginning that the dragon kills was meant as a reference to the old tropes of D&D and Lord of the Rings. Killing them off was a way of saying that this is very much not going to be a traditional D&D campaign.
The story of episodes 1 and 2 are an original story that never appeared on stream, but the basis for it did happen in the Critical Role team's home game before it started being broadcast.
Sam does sing as Scanlan, both in the live stream and this, but in the live stream he would riff on hit songs from the radio, whereas in the animated series they have had to write entirely new songs for the series.
There's a whole set of RUclips videos about the behind the scenes making of this series. I would really recommend checking them out, either as reactions or just on your own. The music and casting videos especially are worth a watch.

The actual gameplay is very theatrical too. Not only are they good at voicing and immersing into their characters. The most incredible thing is, how they play together. Each character could be a showstealer, but they know when to step back for the others. The voice acting is incredible, but the teamplay is out of this world.

I really loved the breakdown after watching the show - as a long time critter (fan of CR) and backer to the kickstarter I was totally hyped to see the 'pre stream' arc. There are a lot of hidden easter eggs just for fans, but nothing that takes away from new people enjoying the show. Pike and Scanlan are both gnomes though. Percy (the gunslinger) in this world is the person who invented the gun - at this stage in the world-building, he is the ONLY person with a pepperbox (a type of old handgun) and it's... not exactly reliable as you can see from the bar fight.

As others have noted, episodes 1 & 2 are adapting events in their campaign from before Critical Role started streaming. They had originally been playing in Pathfinder (hence Percy being a gunfighter), but when they began streaming, they switched to D&D 5e, so Matt Mercer had to homebrew a gun system. The gun being so unique to the setting is a plot point that gets addressed later.

(alot of the dnd terms or spells are changed in the show for copyright purposes)
As for percy and his guns he is the inventor of this world's first guns, all his designs are based on historical versions of the guns which is why his hand gun is classified as a pepperbox. You will get more info as the show progresses but he does name all his inventions and this one is called "the list"
The first group you see in the initial intro that get tpk-ed are a homage to the lord of the rings crew and to illustrate that this show is not "classic" fantasy
The animation studio is the same studio that did legend of korra, and the character designer was the same guy that has done all the DC animated character designs.
1st two episodes are just an intro to the characters and abilities the 3rd ep and beyond deal with a fan favorite arc from early on in thier first campaign.

Rick had a really good catch -- the game started as a Pathfinder game among friends in the voice-acting industry. When they started streaming on Twitch, they switched to D&D 5e as a less 'crunchy' game system, but brought over some things like Percy as a Gunslinger class and Pike's goddess being a Pathfinder diety (here just called "The Everlight" to avoid copyright issues).
*Major* inside joke, but I'll bet a lot of Critters got a kick out of Aaron referring to Pike's "sigil" (and pronouncing it correctly).

Yep. Grog is a Goliath, Scanlan and Pike are both gnomes, Keyleth, Vex, and Vax are all half-elves, and Percy is the group's only human. In the streams they had a Dragonborn sorcerer with them named Tiberius Stormwind, but the player, Orion Acaba, got kicked off Critical Role after multiple instances of OOC drama caused by him. Since Tiberius as a character is Orion's IP, they wrote him out of the animated show entirely.
Percy's a Fighter but his subclass is homebrew that's based off the gunslinger from Pathfinder 1E because their campaign was actually originally played in Pathfinder before switching over to 5E D&D. It's worth mentioning that his pepperbox is one-of-a-kind - as far as we're aware, Percy is the first person to invent and create a working firearm in all of Exandria (the world of Critical Role). Which is also the reason that the orc lady grins in the bar after Percy puts the pepperbox to her chin - she has no idea he could pull the trigger and she'd be dead.
Also, they *did* take some artistic liberties with the show - they cut out the arc that the streams started on, for instance, because it wasn't very relevant to any overarching plots or characters' storylines. Some details about NPCs (e.g. age, gender, what D&D race they are) were changed, as well, usually to differentiate them better from one another, though most remain the same. The order of some events is switched around as well, to allow for the plot to flow more naturally for the purposes of pacing for the show. But overall, things so far have been close enough to the streams that I'm quite happy as a longtime Critical Role fan.
Sam would sing quite often as Scanlan, but it was almost always an improvised parody of a popular song with the lyrics changed to fit the current situation... so unfortunately, that's one of the victims of adaptation, since they're trying to play it safe on the legal front. Fortunately, I think the songs that they wrote for him in the show are just as good.

Btw- Matt appears several times as various NPCs. It was Matt that Scanlan pissed on.

What Matt didn't know, however, was that his voice cameos were going to look like him in animation. He genuinely didn't know until he saw the episode.

I’m so excited for you guys to watch this! The main plot is pretty much the Campaign, but there is also a lot of none campaign related stuff in it!
Sure you guys will miss a couple Easter eggs, but you won’t be missing out on main stuff👍
