solid parenting -your dad.
The two most important pedals everyone needs are: 1) a graphic EQ and 2) another graphic EQ. one on the pedalboard & another in the loop.
I have one in the loop, thinking of getting another...
Not Parametric Equalisers?
@@vivekmehta5172 two sweep able bands of EQ plus shelving? I prefer graphic EQs on guitar.
add in a boost/OD pedal and tuner pedal and you are set. Delay and reverb are fun as well to have.
Is it going to work with line levels signals? I’d like to use them from a DJ prospective to tune the speakers, and I’d prefer these over the regular rack mounted equalizers. Would it be possible?
Got pretty excited when this one got announced. Great video!
Thanks for a very informative demo, Leon!
After decades of playing guitar I just recently started really playing with an EQ and I am kicking myself for not doing so sooner. This is pretty rad.
Thank you so much for this great in depth review. I'm very excited for the next in depth demo I'm very close to getting this pedal.
It's a dead set winner
Dude, you've sold me. Fantastic looking pedal. Great video!
Nice demo. Very excited about this device
Ever since getting my Mark I I Boogie in 1982, I instantly understood the value of both pre and post eq. I can't believe this pedal puts it all in one box with presets.
Makes you miss it on "regular" amps
Been waiting for this kind of "dual eq" outside of complex modeller platforms. Great to see that it does all I wanted from a pedal like this and more! Great video.
Me too! This one is looking like a keeper.
@@LeonTodd Two questions: Do you notice any tone suck at all when using the pedal as a dual EQ? Any tips on power supply that can suport this pedal as well as normal DC pedals?
I'm a complete noob to these things still. But I learn so much from you Leon.
One day when I will be able to afford all the good stuff, this info should help me alot.
Boss really smashed it out of the park with this one. I can't think of a single extra thing I'd want in an EQ pedal: 4-cable with two settings for each, MIDI.. just perfect.
Also your dad was kind of a genius. I'm always surprised by how little guitarists seem to appreciate the concept of pre-gain EQ. It's so completely critical to get the sound you want and the number of people I've seen doing things like buying four different clean boosts each with a different EQ curve or twiddling the pre-gain EQ on a Boogie head going "but the EQ doesn't do anything!".
Yep. EQ is essential
Looks cool- I have the MXR 10 band EQ in the FX loop of my 6505 amp and makes a big difference cleaning up the boxy amp sounds.
I love my eq20, this is quite an upgrade, never used all 4 memories tbh.
That’s awesome. I run a mxr 10 band in the effects loop and boss GE 7 in front. Saves room on my board
Malcolm Reynolds I have a couple and they are great. I run it in the loop of every amp I own. Can’t wait to try out this boss.
No one cant beat the BOSS!!!! Awesome tone
Smart dad! Great vid tar.
Many Thanks for the quick reply :)
Your tone here sounds so much like an old Mesa Boogie! We definitely need more amps with built in graphic eq's. I wish Mesa Boogie would reissue some of their older amps like the Coliseum heads and the Mark 2c+
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful.
A video with wiring tips using this pre-post feature would also be great (mainly if there are noise gates with send-return involved alongside with the amp loop).
Greetings from Brazil
My next purchase. This is one awesome box.
Pulled out a deep cut with that kings x riff
Love your demos and the enthusiasm you bring to them; much appreciated and enjoyed.
I've been using a Source Audio EQ on my board (post gain) for quite some time but it has limited EQ bands compared to the EQ-200. What I do like about it is the MIDI capability.
When you do your expanded demo of the EQ-200, please include a tutorial section on using the MIDI to select presets, pre/post gain, etc.
Thanks
Funny because when i was doing this video the only other EQ like it i could think of was the Source Audio. Should be fun playing with MIDI.
My biggest complaint about this pedal is that it only has 4 presets, even when using MIDI (from what I can see).
Love these new Boss form factors. And this pedal has to be my favorite of them all so far. Easily the best EQ I've ever tried out as well, Leon. Who needs more amplifiers/ODs when you have this connected into the front end AND the fx loop of your favorite Marshall or Mesa? Ok, that's a rhetorical question. But the point still stands! Extremely flexible and the fact you can recall the settings so quickly is immeasurably valuable. I expect these will sell like hotcakes
Yeah it's essentially an Iron Man suit for your amp.
@@LeonTodd great analogy. Though your initial Viagra statement was right on the money as well lol. I can say that for the 20 minutes or so of fiddling around with this EQ into a JMP, Viagra would have been completely unnecessary for me.
Man.. the possibilities. I've been on an EQ kick since I discovered the possibilities of putting a few P-EQ racks into a distorted preset in Amplitube.. this would be great for the other guitarist in my band who runs physical amps/pedals.
Hey, I like how you presented it as a step-by-step approach. Could you apply the same idea you did using the amp, but in its place would be a pedal? How would that work conections wise?
Was enjoying this video in any case, but the dogman riff made me so happy.
Gotta love kings X
Great video! Would love to see you use it on an acoustic guitar. Channel A with EQ, Channel B with comp pedal and EQ. Parallel compression.
Excellent idea!
I do this same thing using my fractal FX8 into my Mesa MKV, looking forward to see what else you show us with it.
It's nice to see this stuff trickle out into the world of pedals. I make extensive use of EQ in the Axe-Fx to craft tones that would be a PITA with pedals and amps.
How would you use it for a plexi style amp for the 80’s tones? A tip or demo on that would be cool ! Thank you
Would love to see if you can use an expression pedal to “move” from one eq position to another !
Great subject Leon. I ran a dual 15 band rack mount stereo MXR EQ with a 50 watt and a 100 watt Marshall when touring from 1986-1997. I had amazing tone and would only go to my Boss SD-1 overdrive for lead boost when needed. A good EQ really cuts through the mix of stage volume. Your description of Viagra for your guitar tone is absolutely correct.
That's a God tier rig!
@@LeonTodd I think the same when I hear your tone mate
very cool release, wasn't expecting a new EQ pedal to be released , great content as always
just wondering on the PRS SC245, did you ever compare it to a SC250 ? it's currently on my GAS list =0 wondering if the scale length really makes a big difference
thanks,
Hi mate! Beautiful video as usual, which amp are you using?
Hey man! Recently pi ked up a randall diavlo 2x12 stack 100w Maybe an in depth with this tied into the GT1000? Going to be getting this boss eq200 this week.
Hey man got a question. So I recently had my les Paul loaded with a bareknuckle alnico nailbomb. It’s a great pickup but when I try to play more classic sounding stuff like AC/DC and what not it just doesn’t quite sound right because of the more aggressive voice. Which is a bummer to me because the stock pickup totally had the classic rock thing but just didn’t nail the more aggressive stuff like the bareknuckle does. I’m looking for pedal solutions for this and am wondering what might be the best way to go. A overdrive to use on my clean channel that’s more mellow? Or could I possibly use an eq pedal to shape different gain sounds?
Great video!
Where does the od pedal go? Before or after the pre-stage? Thank you!
Good explanation of the features - I'm interested and suspect this will do really well with my Orange. Just wish you would have demoed the EQ with some clean and crunch tones. The high gain didn't really show what it could do.
I'll give it a more thorough demo in the next week or so.
Can you set On/off and Memory footswitches to operate like presets up/down scroller?
Nice. For me this is the most exciting 200 series pedal. I've been looking at the Feel The Tone PA-1Q, which is programmable and all analogue, but doesn't have the 4CM options of the Boss, or the tactile sliders (soooo important!). I think the Boss is cheaper too. Winner winner, chicken dinner.
Yeah Boss nailed it with this
This is exactly my situation too.
I'm caught between the both, but this looks better.
The only thing holding me back about this is there is no information whether it has MIDI preset compatibility.
Are there any videos on how to use the midi functionality of this pedal?
Never seen one.. Wow. EQs are so cool. I have thought about using two.
Love that inverted V Boston like tone..
My cousin's studio has a mesa rectumfrier 😂 and I can't seem to get good tone from it. I mean not like his Engle or his Bogner, and marshalls sound. Maybe it's me .
Very cool video.
Best eq functionality-wise, but how does it fair to an eq like the MXR 10-band in terms of tone response and fidelity?
Looks amazing, is it quiet ?
Hi Leon i am trying to buy a Amplifire 12 but can't fined anywhere in Australia that has one, do you know anywhere i can get one. I have been in touch with Independent music but they do not know when or if they will get more stock. I have been using an eleven rack but never been happy with the hi gain sounds, have you ever used and eleven and what did you think of it. Hope you can help me i just live down the road in Girrawheen love you channel thanks mate. All the best Rod Coxell
Awesome demo!!! Loving the Kings X though! Have you ever tried to nail Ty’s tone ?!
Ty rules. His early tone is from another universe.
I cant get channels A/B to turn on/off independently. Please help. Running EQ in two different amps fx loops, set in parallel, unlinked, have the on/off button set to turn ChA on/off, have the mem button set to turn ChB on/off. It is not working
Could you please share what you have the digital settings with the pedal are at? On/off A,B, memories etc.
I messed mine up.
I use this 4CM for the front and loop of the amp but I recently got an Engl Savage and the amp doesn’t react well with it, I wonder why
Hey bud , how bout trying it in front of a single channel amp (tiny terror or similar) and use the memory to cut and boost , making faux “channels” on the amp . Ie clean / rhythm / lead
That is an A-grade idea. Happening.
Hi Leon, I use a Ge-7 to boost the mids and cut the basses.... It's a bit noisy even with the ops amp modded.... What about the EQ-200? is it noisy in that application?
Hello how would you connect the eq200 to pedal board
thanks Leon for this demo, excellent job as always! have you noticed some tone loose when the eq is flat?
I didn't notice any latency or tone suck.
Is there anyway you can compare this pedal with the Boss Ge7 ?
Leon can you please try this eq200 after the Electro Harmonix key9 to see if it can tame its extreme low end and high end and also sculpt the sound ?, you really know your stuff.
I've got a demo coming in the next week using it on a variety of sources, including synth
Before I hit play I was thinking I wonder if this can do pre and post, bam whole video is about that! Looks like an absolute ripper bit of gear.
Was a little confused by the choice or running parallel as wouldnt that allow dry signal through also, or am I interperating that wrong?
Specific questions regarding the unit though, any noise introduced with the unit? Had the old 10 band mxr that added a minor high pitch noise when on.
Also can this midi connect to say the DD500 for switching on and off with delays?
Yeah it will midi up, but it uses 1/8 inch trs for midi so you'd need a converter cable. Very impressed with how quiet it is.
It's Boss! It's Great!
can you do that with the boss gt 100?
Awesome Leon. I also have the old Boos EQs, this one is such an amazing evolution. I dont know if its doable but did BOSS implement a Q shaping feature?
I'm not sure - that would be awesome though. It would be cool if it had high and low pass filters you could switch in for even more versatility.
Please try this pedal with classic hard rock/rock sounds. I have Bogner Shiva and Marshall Silver jubilee head and try this pedal shape like smooth gain pedal before amp and just in fx loop like solo boost. Please try with Marshall JCM800.
You got it.
Does this have lowpass , and highpass filters and q adjustment ?
Hi Leon, Brilliant Demo👍👍👍
As you mentioned the Mesa Mark 5 has an EQ built in to the Amp, John Petrucci Loves the feature, I saw a Video of him and the Voicing's he was able to create to get his Awesome tone!
Take care♥️.
Melbourne, Australia.
Pre-EQ and post-EQ man - opens your eyes!
Leon Todd, Certainly does, you have a wise Father!
Take care mate👍
Leon Todd or ears? ;p
Seems like the only thing that kinda sucks on this pedal is that the red and green LED's for memory and mode are so tiny. On a stage it may be difficult to see. I feel like two little 7 segment displays (kinda like on a DigiTech pedal) would be much easier to read and also able to show the same information.
Superb demo pedal (for those who play metal in C) for anyone plays other styles and other chords the pedal remains unknown
To be a Dogman! Oh yeah!
Nice video.
Ty tabor rules.
Leon Todd yes he does!
Hi thanks for the video. Isn't it noisy? The GE7 is super noisy.
Can I get a link for your buddy ryan’s Video?
I would love to see this used as follows: start with a crunchy amp, then 1 switch to cut volume and mids to clean it up, switch 2 mid boost and volume boost for lead
I did an on depth demo recently where I did this
Does it play well with interrupt style effects loop such as your SOY? Otherwise it's pretty freaking awesome
Will investigate
Leon: is there anyway to use this pedal to boost with a narrow Q around 800 Hz to get that Stryper or Boston “nasally” singing lead tone? ( I wish this was a programmable parametric equalizer)
Dude..yes. You will be able to do everything you could ever imagine from an eq perspective.
I did not think seriously for EQ pedals because I thought tones could be easily worse with the EQ pedal (this would be true for the beginner) and wanted to use only EQ on pedals (so I preferred to buy pedals having high, middle and Low eq) . But I learned how to use EQ pedals in RUclips and practiced the EQ pedal, then I found EQ pedal can change tones dramatically and I don't need to add other pedals to get other tones (you can change non transparent drive tone to transparent one) even though some tones could not be generated with the EQ pedal. This Boss eq pedal has two eq pedals in it, that is the great advantage over other eq pedals...
I'd want ChB permanently on as a cab sim and then use ChA as a booster. Possibly use the memory for either different "cabs" with the same booster or vice versa.
Can it run two amps in phase? Thanks
I've been waiting for this pedal. Am I right in thinking that it can operate as a programmable wah pedal using an expression pedal?
I think you might be onto something there. I'll have to try that.
Wah is just a one-band sweepable parametric EQ, so yeah. There might even be a sweepable LPF in there, which could do some interesting things if you treat is as a wah.
Hey Leon, could you potentially use this as an A-B pedal with different EQ's for the A and B channels? Do the A and B inputs function in this way, where you could click between two different instruments (say in my case, guitar & mandolin) in the A & B inputs, and run different EQ's for each instrument out to one amp? 🤔
You can run channel A&B as independent parallel EQ's, so that would work like a charm!
My wish is granted! Thanks much Leon! 🍻✌️
Hey Leon, just wanted to give you the heads-up - i got the Boss EQ-200, and while IT can successfully send different mixes through the A & B channels, IT actually does NOT function as a legit ABY pedal, because the pedal's function to turn off channel A or B only turns off the pedal with ITs mix - NOT the volume to the channel ITself! So, while you can switch between channel A & B mixes, you cannot actually turn off channel A or B completely, in terms of volume 😕
i need a proper ABY pedal in front of the EQ-200 to prevent the feedback from my mandolin on stage.... No regrets, however! The Boss pedal is exactly what i needed to get a proper mix for electric and acoustic guitar, as well as mandolin, all in the same show! 👍👍🎶
@@almsforsatan bummer! Reading back through your original comment I misunderstood what you wanted. Stoked that it still does a job on your board!
EQS: making amps sound great since 1969
The secret of any real guitar tone is the Eq - I have 3 Eq pedals - Boss Eq 20, Eq 7 & a Russian parametric eq ... All great, but for sure, I will also buy this amazing Eq 200 ! ...
Subscribed just for nailing the sound on Dogman.. took me a minute but dug up the album and now I couldn't be happier.
Also your dads a hero.
That album sounds so pure and filthy, love it.
Must say it feels a bit shady to blend in the room mic on the "bad tone" at 5:07. Or am I missing something?
It always comes down to reduce the low-end and push mids before the signal gets into the amp. I wonder if all the "Metal-Amp" manufacturers actually pre-filter the signal at the input in order to make their amps sound tighter than a classic amp. In the end you pay up to 2000 Euros or more for a "tighter" amp and you're not aware that you can sound (exactly) like this just by modelling the EQ-curve to your liking in front of mostly any classic valve amp. Nice that this Boss pedal has presets. Nice review!
That's exactly what they do. A lot of "metal" amps are the same circuit with a different pre-eq.
Is there any reason why this pedal wouldn't work for an upright bass?
If your upright has a pickup you're good to go!
Bro u just sold me on this eq, I mostly do high gain, but is too much…I think not 😁
So are you told me that i can use this in my pedalboard and have 2 separate eq one before the pre and one in fx loop and i use both at the same time even with midi presets?
Yes
Leon Todd ok I’m ready to build a new pedalboard and to shape the tone in the next level!
This rips!
Bass input?
How quiet is the noise floor? Do you know if it's all analog with digital control (for us purists) or is it all digital?
Matt Morgan It's all digital.
@@joeygwood Thanks!
Ah, I see you are a man of culture... nice King's X riffage right there ! While you're at it, why not try bi-amping bass, Dug pinnick style with that pedal???
Does it accept line-level? On website says it would work with synths.
I believe so, planning on trying it on synth
Leon Todd please keep us posted 🙏🏿
Cool pedal Leon, how do you think it would go with a Bass?
Awesome - I intend to demo it on bass!
My main recording tone for metal is the DSL 50's Crunch channel boosted with a Boss GE-7. When I saw the EQ-200 I may or may not have wet my pants. Please please "release the Kraken" within your DSL 50 using the EQ-200!
I am so, so pumped to try it with the DSL.
@@LeonTodd RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!
How quiet is it?
I don't understand why they stuck the Midi and USB on the side. This style of Boss pedals are always good because you can stack them side-by-side and have all the jacks at the rear.
Correct, side jacks. It's midi via TRS so you could use a right angle TRS and it would be nice and tight.
your dad clearly knows his stuff!
yeah Dad goes alright
I would have thought it would be better to demo with some clean tones , the whole thing sounded like someone playing with the eq on a MT-2 ?
Check out my other video to hear it on a bunch of sources, including clean tones, bass and acoustic.
Why does no EQ, pedal or rack, have a boost or cut on anything more than 15db? That's why I have to use a Furman PQ6 which is noisy and almost my age.
Run this one on series mode and get 30db
@@LeonTodd The Furman PQ3/4/6 go to 40db so if you really need to cut out a frequency completely or really push the front end, then there's nothing else.
@@Rubbmeuk 40db is god tier
@@LeonTodd Well, Dimebag was a deity, wasn't he? That's the sound I am trying to get close to.
