- This baked Alaska is beyond easy, but so beautiful, and delicious! A dome of your favorite ice cream on top of a pound cake base covered with toasted meringue! This is a really low stress dessert to make, and the perfect excuse to use a kitchen torch! The traditional Baked Alaska would have flaming liquor poured on top or be broiled but I think the torch gives you more control and less worry! Let me know what flavor of ice cream you would use and if there are any other easy ice cream desserts you would like me to make!

It was 1966, a friend and I decided to make baked Alaska in her mother's kitchen. Her parents were gone for the day so we had the place to ourselves... which was a good thing. It gave us time to clean up the mess when we tried to toast the meringue. As ice cream was dripping like mad and meringue was sliding off, the kitchen filled with the wonderful smell of burnt sugar smoke. We panicked and that turned into a laughing jag as my friend dropped what was left of it in the sink. After watching this video I can see where we went wrong lol Now 53 yrs later I would be confidant to try this again following YOUR tips. Thank you John.:o)

You are an old soul I think. I love that you are bringing back all the classics from years ago. Baked Alaska was all the rage in the 50’s and 60’s then in the 70’s “The Bomb” was all the rage. Several ice flavors, cookies, toppings, layers and whipping cream frozen in a huge Tupperware bowl/dome for large families or gatherings. I remember making Baked Alaska when I was a child all by myself
and being so proud of myself. Love your designs with the meringue. Thank you!

The best one of these I ever had was broiled until the meringue was crunchy. It was placed on a bed of raspberry coullis. The contrasts between crunchy/soft and Tart/Sweet was absolutely mind blowing. One of the best deserts I ever had

John mentions in one of his videos that swiss meringue buttercream is his favorite for frosting a chocolate cake. If it's John's favorite combo then it MUST be good! 👍😁

,I know this was posted originally 3 years ago, but I only found your channel in this year. I tried to make a baked Alaska for a home economics exam many years ago. My ice-cream was not nearly cold enough and we didn't have kitchen torches back then (1979 or 1980)so you can imagine how it came out. So I just had to see how it should have been done. Thank you.

Followed your video and recipe came out great, Used liquid pasteurized egg whites, doubled the cream of tartar and at the end added a pinch of cornstarch holds your meringue up better.

Great idea to insulate the ice cream!
🎈It's like eating cake at a birthday party! 🎈
If you are going to put it under the broiler a tip is to spread a thin layer of meringue over the bombe, (making sure you cover the cake too and don't leave any gaps in order to seal in the ice cream), before you pipe. This helps the ice cream from melting as quickly, due to the heat of the oven.

My grandma made this. Baked it in the oven for about a minute I guess.
We just cut the cake to the size of the ice cream container we were using and popped out the block of ice cream.
The taste isn't mind-blowing, but it's good and fun.
