It is, but that's not its primary role when it comes to a band. Bass's function is sort of like a steering wheel in a band. You can change the whole sound of a tune just by playing roots. Guitars or instruments that use the high registers/treble clef don't posses that ability. Just because its main function is playing the lows, doesn't make it any less of an instrument. It's just that utilizing multiple basses or complex/busy bass line would require a bit of skill to avoid note clashing and retain the fundamental sweet spot for the ear. Bass as a solo instrument is s whole different ball park though. Technically if you use bass in this manner, you really don't need much more than a drummer
You can make alot of sounds from a bass..lennon said give me a tuba and ill make sounds come out of it now im not a big fan of tuba myself but you get it tho..i knew a guy that could whistle like a pro and and hand slap pots n pans it was a thing of art to hear and watch
