Low-tier Upsets in Smash 4

- I tried to find one upset for each character on the low-end of the current tier list (E and lower). E tier and lower specifically because those characters tend to be the ones allowed in low-tier brackets.
This vid is meant to showcase the best recorded wins for each of those characters in recent-ish time. I kind of had to dig deep for some of them, taking sets from 2016 like from CEO (Palutena for example, although TLTC beat Ranai/Kirihara but I couldn't find those sets anywhere). I also wasn't able to include wins for Falco and Dr. Mario, I asked in the Dr. Mario discord if there were any notable wins since b7games over Abadango (not recorded) and they only mentioned Nairo beating ESAM so... yeah. (I've just been informed AC beat 6WX with Falco before he was PGR, My B)

In a way picking a low tier character gives you a slight advantage because your opponent likely has little to no practice against them. It's hard to predict what they're going to do next.

(Overpowered 1-2 range special weapon+absurdly broken self-healing/defense-breaking mastery skill + best affinity in the game + ability to double-attack practically everything due to high speed + his trash Luck stat not really mattering because Luck is a terrible stat + the generally low weight of swords makes him one of the most powerful units in the entire FE series.)

In Ultimate Sakurai seems to want every character to be at least somewhat viable, evident by many buffs to Ike and Ganondorf as well as Mac and Zelda
its still impossible to balance a game with over 70 characters, but at least every character has one or two wild cards at their disposal.

Pretty much this. Even tho Brawl was unbalanced, I loved it since each character felt unique.
spindash64 casual wise, Brawl was the most balanced, back at university my friends and I played it every friday after class, and the winning spread was fairly even.

I have seen that 12:25 clip in tons of combo videos and highlight reels, and people seem to always get hyped at the second hydrant. What many don't realize is that right afterward, Dabuz could have recovered to the trampoline, but Sinji used it onstage at the perfect moment as a show of disrespect.

I swear to god I love seeing Puff just come out of nowhere with horrible options but the opponent gets lax, takes a Rest to the face and realizes what a horrible mistake they made. So low tier that any Rest seems disrespectful.

People don't understand that Puff has no counters except every character. Never loses except when she does. Highest tier on her own tier list (which is just puffs). Puff is truly the best character. Take this from a Puff main.

@@GrouchyGander tiers do exist, there are definitely some matchups where one character has an advantage over the other, and if a character matches up poorly vs most of the cast it will end up low tier.
that being said, there are still some advantages to playing a low tier. people generally aren't used to playing against them at a high level, there's an added pressure in your opponent's mind, the crowd is usually for you, and so on. it comes down to how much of a role these and the raw matchup disadvantage play.
i play pokemon and at a high level, it's not about just using your favorites for every game. you need to be prepared to use any build or set that will give you the most advantage over your opponents. because in pokemon, if you're too predictable, you get the tough matchups. and unlike in smash, those can be SUPER hard to win (thus you can't just have a "main" team).
unless you're talking about not always just trying to win, in which case i agree. have fun. fun is nice.

The tier list are an illusion, they are composed mostly on how the profesional players perform with the the characters. So is based mostly in player performance and still the need of the players actually wanting to play with these characters.

G&W wasn’t low tier in 4 imo. I think a lot of placements in that tier lists were terrible. G&W being one of them since he actually had solid results and not bad match ups overall. Mid tier at worst.

youd be surprised how repetitive the game can be even if low tiers somehow got more coverage, sure its less this way but still youd kind of know what to expect.

The “current tier list” seems to be heavily flawed as it always was
InfernoGaming3 it is also based off tournaments results, not just “potential”. Potential is worthless if nobody is gonna use that character in the first place just because of their other flaws
the tier list is a scale that determines the overall usefulness of characters based on their objective qualities, options, and matchups. For example, Cloud is S-tier because he has many safe options and powerful zone breaking moves, while Diddy Kong is S-tier because his neutral and ledge trapping is nearly unrivaled. Meanwhile, Jigglypuff is F-tier (or G-tier depending on some lists) because of its lack of options; 2 of its 4 Specials are almost entirely useless in most situations, and it has no way to get in against Swords.
This is why it's special for people to use low tiers and win with them. If there were no tier lists, then people wouldn't care when a low-tier wins. People who use low tiers aren't in it necessarily to win, but to gain popularity and perhaps push the boundaries of what is known of a character. Obviously, skill level is the most important part of your gameplay, so even if you pick a bottom tier, you can easily beat people who haven't played the game for as much time or haven't done as much research. However, if someone knows the matchup against your character, and has an equal skill level to you, then matchups and tier rankings play a much bigger part in the outcome.
So the "current tier list" is not heavily flawed, and is based on the findings of more people than just someone who can get a hydrant kill every once in a while.
I agree with the results stuff as that makes the most sense but even if characters aren’t getting results they usually don’t drop much anyways. And no just because a low tier plays against a top tier doesn’t mean if they have equal skills and know the matchup the top tier wins, its all about matchups at that point. And no pacman is not about random “hydrant kills” thats like saying ness gets justice once in a while for landing PKT2. Finally this doesn’t give any excuses to downgrade a character for anything especially if they can get stuff done when used right.
Chapin Noel Usually people play “low tiers” to actually prove they’re not in that tier or they can do it for your reasons. Both are logical
InfernoGaming3 it also is option based, for example in melee fox is s because of all the options he has in any given situation, while Kirby is last because of his overall lack of options. Lists are also based off of results and the one used in the video is currently the most accurate
