    Exciting opening scene there Shamus - Petra is certainly a good working dog on the hills and great fun. I have to say I enjoyed the camp and I admire your knowledge. Clouds is one thing I've been endeavoring to understand. Interesting stuff! Now as you say it's about informing people so that they know next time. No need for ego just impart the information with the highest intentions in mind. So, about High Willhays. It's not the highest point in Southern England (said pragmatically). That record belongs to the Black Hill or Cats Back in sunny old Herefordshire at 640 meters (Black Mountains). I've been planning a camp there so will share it with you shortly. High Willhays is the highest point South of the Brecon Beacons though. Any way, loving your content and learning lots. Mark

    Hi Shamus. Really enjoyed that. I'm old enough to have been taught that a mountain in England is a hill over 2000 feet above seal level as opposed to 600 metres. 🤣 Having just checked that converts to 609 metres above seal level. It's all in the eye of the beholder of course. Some much lower ground can feel mountaineous; and some higher ground doesn't. All that really matters is the pleasure and challenge we get from days and nights 'out there'. Yours is a great channel and much appreciated by me. Thank you.

    Hi Shamus I hope you and Petra are well , I came across your channel last November and have watched all of your videos and have enjoyed all of them . I was just wondering have you stopped making the videos as you haven’t uploaded any for some time . That would be a shame as I think your channel is one of the best on you tube . I did plan on a night out this year , but I want to invest in a hilleberg tent first as the winds can get pretty rough . Hopefully you will be back on RUclips soon . Regards Steve

    Hi Shamus. Great to see a father and son wildcamp. Great video and nice simple explanations of the basic cloud types. I’ve been in a few CB’s in my time that I wish I’d flown around! 😂 I tried to find a sheltered pitch up on Black Tor after visiting the B24 crash site last year but to no avail. So having walked all the way up there it was back down to the river again for a much more comfortable night. I also walked through Black-a-Tor Copse and was totally disgusted at seeing exactly the same problem as over at Bellever. An absolute total disregard by certain members of the public who come up on to the moor and have illegal fires. There were numerous fire pits and scorched areas but the most upsetting thing was seeing the damage caused in the ancient woodland where limbs had been hacked off the beautiful oaks for firewood!!!! 🤬 Anyway, tell Angus he gets a thumbs up from me for having a Jetboil! Captivating to watch as always. ATVB Graham

    Hi Shamus, We’re fairly new subscribers to your channel and are both loving working our way through your videos. We have recently started wild camping on Dartmoor and have enjoyed an overnight camp on Oke Tor and another on Shelstone Tor. At present we have an MSR Elixir 2 tent but are considering upgrading to something with a bit more room and a tent that will cope with wind and rain on top of the Dartmoor Tors and Brecons. The Hilleberg Nallo 3 seems to tick most of the boxes but I noticed you have the Anjan 2 and just wondered how you are finding the yellow label Hilleberg compared to the red label ones? Your thoughts and comments would be much appreciated. Kind regards, Trudy & Pete

    • @outdoorsinspiration9284
      @outdoorsinspiration9284  Год назад

      Hi Trudy & Pete. The yellow label tents are very capable & can take a fair bit of weather. I choose an Anjan because it is spacious, light and squishes down to a small volume - this suits my personal needs as I carry a two person tent to accommodate Petra 🐶 as well. I think your preference toward the Nallo is a sound choice, I’ve had two of these and they are certainly very capable and versatile, consequently a little heavier and with more ‘bulk’ - but I assume you will share the load between the two of you.
      I’ll be firing up a few more videos later this year (now living in the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) - I’ve added an Allak 2 to my collection of shelters, I’m looking forward to the space it provides - have a look at that online, it’s very spacious.
      Good luck with your wild camp outings 👍🐶😊

      Outdoors Inspiration it was between the Anjan and the niak and the extra space in the vestibule swung it for me, yes I did know that, I guess it’s to cut down on weight and as the fly fleet doesn’t go to the floor it would pool water on it easily ?

    Great video. Some really interesting facts about the geology of the moor and clouds. I never knew the moor was covered by such a thick layer of sandstone in the past. Presumably High Willhays was Much Higher Willhays back then. On another note, what’s your tip for levelling out a camping mat on sloping ground? Do you wedge stuff under the lower side? I always try to find as flat a pitch as possible but even on Dartmoor that can be surprisingly hard. All the best.

    • @outdoorsinspiration9284
      @outdoorsinspiration9284  4 года назад +1

      Hello, thanks for commenting - Much Higher Willhays 😂 WRT mats, to be honest I try and find the most even ground when I'm picking my pitch. The main problem is that a) the mat slides or b) you slide off the mat. I've but some faint lines of silicon sealant across the base of one of my mats that, in theory, should stop it from slipping - in reality it just collects dog hair and grime 😂 In respect of slipping off a mat, some mats seem more prone than others - I find myself slipping off my Therm-a-rest Prolite if it's on uneven ground, but less so on a NeoAir XTherm. I have tried wedging my rucksack under the side of a pad in the past but really I just look for a flat pitch. If there is an incline then I face the tent so that my head is higher.
      That's my view, I'm sure others have their ways 😊👍

      @@outdoorsinspiration9284 Yes. With you on the silicone thing - ends up bonded to all sorts of detritus. I try to log any potential good camp spots as POIs as I'm out walking and return to them to camp on other days. I'll keep with the wedging strategy,

      Hi Craig - your 'quality' mountain days will be defined in your logbook. To an extent some days like this would be taken into consideration if there was a navigation, leadership or overnight aspect. But in reality I think your assessors would be looking for 'mountainous areas' Lakes, North Wales, Scotland etc. WRT the rain, it all depends on the wind direction, on this occasion it was absolutely fine as you can see in the video. All the very best 😊👍😊

    Hi Shamus, thanks for the videos you are putting together and the informative content. I am in the process of buying a new tent and i wanted to ask you a few questions seeing that you have three of the four tents i am considering! I think the Hilleberg soulo is a bomb proof all year tent but the price tag/availabilty are an issue for me. I wanted to know more about what you think of the Anjan 2 compared with the Akto. Have you had difficulties with condensation in the Akto? Have you experience difficulties with the Anjan 2 in rain and wind, especially from the point of view of rain being blown in under the raised sides of the tent?
    I love the size and weight of the Anjan 2 but im concerned about the sides being raised from the ground and i wonder would it be far too drafty in windy conditions?
    Sorry for all the questions but i feel like you can answer these well because you have etensive use of all three.
    Thanks Richard

      Hi Richard - Im sure you've seen these videos with the Anjan:
      ruclips.net/video/KO3U1MLp6DY/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/WmRkgLmvP3Y/видео.html
      So far the elevated cut has caused no damp issues at all with the Anjan 2 for me. Bear in mind it is a lighter textile, Kerlon 1000, than the Akto and has a mesh only inner door. None of these have caused me any concerns. I want a few more nights in torrential conditions before coming up with a conclusion.
      The Anjan 2 is massive compared to the Akto - given the choice between the two, I would personally go with the Anjan 2 all day long - I still use the Akto because I make videos and it provides varied content 👍
      However, I have had an Akto since 2008 I think... They are dependable, simple to pitch and have a huge vestibule (so does the Anjan). It does condensate but, in my view, no more than any other tent - I'm often camped in cold, wet fog where the air is nearly or actually at 100% humidity - and I usually have a soaking dog in with me as well - so anything is going to condensate. The Akto has good ventilation and I leave it wide open almost all of the time.
      I have also had a Nallo 2 and a Jannu - between these, the Anjan 2, the Soulo and the Akto - I would have the Anjan 2 all day every day ...
      But that''s me, with where I go and what I do, things may be different for you. 😊 I hope that's helpful 👍

      @@outdoorsinspiration9284 Thanks for the reply. Yes ive watched both of those videos, im just being extra cautious before i invest in a Hilleberg. I am leaning more towards the Anjan 2 myself because it is lightweight and massive inside, therefore plenty of room for my and my Hungarian Vizsla 'Kola'. Previously ive been using a Terra Nova Pioneer 2 tent which has been pretty good however the pole design through the spine of the tent is a little bit fragile and actually snapped on me while pitching.
      The Soulo and the Akto look like fantastic tents but for me I want the space of the Anjan.
      Thanks again!
      Look forward to more videos from you in the future. Cheers!

    • @outdoorsinspiration9284
      @outdoorsinspiration9284  4 года назад

      Currently, for Dartmoor, wild camping is not permitted at all because of the England lockdown. Elsewhere, you should follow the guidelines of the authority / land owner.
      Ordinarily the bylaws (in respect of camping) for Dartmoor are:
      No person shall knowingly use any vehicle, including a caravan or any structure other than a tent for the purpose of camping on the access land or land set out for the use or parking of vehicles except on any area which may be set apart and indicated by notice as a place where such camping is permitted.
      No person shall knowingly erect a tent on the access land for the purpose of camping:
      (a) in any area listed in Schedule 2 to these byelaws;
      (b)within 100 metres of any public road or in any enclosure.
      No person shall camp in a tent on the same site on the access land for more than two consecutive nights, except on any area which may be set apart and indicated by notice as a place where such camping is permitted.
      In respect of fires:
      No person shall light a fire on the access land, or place or throw or let fall a lighted match or any other thing so as to be likely to cause a fire. This byelaw shall not prevent the lighting or use in such a manner as not to cause danger of or damage by fire of a properly constructed camping stove or cooker.
