I fish a small culvert where shad school a few feet from the bank of a big pond. 6lbers are common. throwing a shad in results in a bite within 30 seconds.
It's all about bait and anything I can learn is valuable to me. As a licensed catfishing guide and tournament angler, I love to share information that helps others enjoy what we do. Great job, sir.
Great information! One question. I’m fishing a 100 acre lake that has gizzard Shad. I’m seeing baitballs that I assume are gizzard fry. I’m wondering if during the summer months if there tendency will be to stay out away from the banks unlike threadfins. Haven’t fished this lake long but I’ve not seen fry up shallow or in shallow cover during warm months thus shallow fishing has not been like you’d expect. So I’m thinking the bigger bass are out with them?
Ryan, what determines when to throw a cast net for bait? Shallow, deep, or do I have to see a school of bait before I throw into it? Great information and video, keep up the good work.
Im generally going to target gizzard shad in shallow stained water, threadfin move from deep to shallow and vice versa much more throughout the day but in the summer they will generally be deep by mid day. There are several ways to determine when to throw the net, you can mark them on your graph and throw on the school or you can watch for them to flip on the surface which will give away their location but generally if I am in an area that I know holds shad I will just blind throw.
Got any tips for Douglas, can only seem to catch smallmouth. Been fishing for about 2-3 years now but just started lake fishing and would love to learn as much as possible about lake fishing. Thanks!
I have been out on Douglas a few times this week and the bite has been tough for me anyway, there are a lot of fish out deep but there are also fish shallow hanging around concentrations of bluegill.
I use a cast net and most of the time I just go into a shallow water area and watch for them to flip on the surface and throw, some days they dont flip so at that point I just blind throw. If i have to catch them in deeper water say more than 15ft deep then yes i use my sonar and a heavier net to catch them. I dont use any chum
Norris can be very very tricky to get bait at, the population of gizzard shad is not as high as other lakes, Norris does have alewife herring though but you should expect to find them deep near the thermocline.

Are you near Boone by chance bud? Definitely subbed brother.
I guess you answered that but I would like to maybe get together and do a collaboration bud..
Do you catch them with a cast net and how to chum or not. Are you using your depth finder?????
