Growing up in the 70's I was never into country music so I originally missed Tanya Tucker's version... Helen Reddy's version is the only one I knew. Both versions are awesome. A 1972 top ten country hit for Tanya Tucker and a number one hit for Helen Reddy in 1973.
My husband, Alex Harvey, who recently passed away., wrote "Delta Dawn" about his mother, who committed suicide when he was 14. The pain that he endured from her death continued to increase every time his name was not mentioned by Tanya. All those years, time after time, and again, right here... it wasn't until his passing that Tanya finally made note of the fact that if it were not for my husbands song, "Delta Dawn," her life would be considerably different. For more information about my beautiful, brilliant, loving husband and the real story about his song, "Delta Dawn," please visit his blog: www.deltadawn.org My life will never, ever, be the same without my sweet baby. Mrs. Thomas Alexander "Alex" Harvey.
I do not think she neglected to mention him out of spite or any thing like that. Recording artists record hundreds of songs written by other people without ever mentioning them or the stories behind those songs. It is not their story to tell. The story was your husband's to tell and he did.
@@HurricaneSATanya and my husband knew each other very well. She's known who the song was written about and...the circumstances behind it. If but a "tip of the hat," a display of respect; which a considerable amount of artists never show - including Tanya. Grant it, if every artist took the time to acknowledge the songwriters from the stage (or any public platform) it would be boring for fans to hear...becoming white noise. HOWEVER, a song as timeless and universal as "Delta Dawn," (which in this case, LAUNCHED Tanya to stardom) at the very least, is worthy of having the name of the man who wrote it mentioned (if only once) by her over the course of several DECADES. It wasn't until the passing of my husband did she "feel" (and I use that word lightly because it was publicity for her) the need to acknowledge him. The CMT clip had room for her to share who the song was written by and why...she made a choice not to. And, the CMT RUclips clip is "Tanya Tucker Talks "Delta Dawn"/Hit Story." I would be glad to hear if you have firsthand knowledge as to what you know to be the TRUTH - why, for decades, she never acknowledged the man who wrote her claim to fame. God bless, Mrs. Thomas Alexander Harvey
Don’t be brainwashed and defend people who don’t care about you. You just took the words right out of my mouth. I read the Facebook post you are referring to. I thought what everyone was thinking, shame on her. It took you up until his death for you to pay tribute to the man, why not on any of his birthdays? Why not because he gave you your one hit that you used to peddle for 50 years and make who knows how much without paying the man. You took the words out of my mouth. At this point with only 11k views I don’t see why CMT hasn’t woken up and realized her time was 40 years ago
You know, it was only 10 years ago (2010) as of this writing, that I learned that Harvey was the first to record the song. During my childhood I could have sworn the Tanya's recording was the first. But her's was even the second or the third, those honors go to Dianne Davidson, who also is backup vocalist on your husband's original, and Bette Midler who did it in a slow bluesy arrangement. However, after Tucker did her version, almost all future recording(and there were many!) followed her arrangement.
Tanya Tucker should go through all these comments and go visit the people that told great stories. I wonder if there's a video out there with actors reenacting Delta Dawn- yeah and while they're at it they could do, what's your mama's name? 😁
Helen Reddy’s version was released June 1973, two days before Midler’s. The preemption required a marketing change for Midler, so the original B-side “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” was shopped to radio, itself becoming a Top Ten hit. 1972 top ten country hit for Tanya Tucker and a number one hit for Helen Reddy in 1973.
@@o.d.flores1219 But Bette's was recorded even before Tanya's. Supposedly Ms. Tucker heard Bette perform the song and knew she wanted to record it. Midler's was an album track long before it was released as a singel
Helen Reddy's version went to Number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100. Tanya's version was only a top 10 hit on the country charts. Helen's was so much better, sorry.
The biggest difference I have noticed in Tanya Tucker is her charisma, personality and just pure talent. Helen Reddy bores me to death! She had the personality of a dial tone!
Nothing like Tanya Tucker!
Best. Song. Ever. A fan back then... Still a fan 48 years later.
Delta Dawn is my all time favorite song. Loved hearing the story behind it.

At least SHE DID finally acknowledge him and GOOD ON HER for it too.👍 ( better than no acknowledgement at all )
I love you and your music is amazing!!!
She got a very lovely voice, she's amazing.

Love your music tanya❤🎶🎤

Today marks the 50th anniversary of when Tanya recorded Delta Dawn. Where does time go?
Her song lol 😆 😂 🤣
Didn't Bette Midler record her own rendition of that song before Tucker did?

I love your music Tanya and think you are one of the best, but...if "The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA" wasn't your song, why did you record it?
Huh ? Many artists record other artist's songs. So what.
Helen Reddy's version went to Number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100. Tanya's version was only a top 10 hit on the country charts. Helen's was so much better, sorry.
WELL BIG DEAL. I LOVE TANYA'S VERSION 👉 STILL👈 💯☝

Loved hearing the story behind this beautiful song it’s one of my favorites I have it on record
