When I do long distance rowing sessions on an erg, I try to get into the mindset that I’m in the middle of the ocean and it’s either row or drown. It helps.
Wow, maybe you’re the first motivational speaker that actually got to me. You just opened my eyes. It’s not about one training, it’s about the process, the compoundig as you said. And in that way it is about the one training. Damn man, that actually hit me. Thanks bro, you just keep inspringing me. Amazing
You really need start your run easy, not walk though, because walking is an addictive killer. Take an easy jog. Nobody kills it their first time out, but you came very close. If you figure that your real transition times will be much quicker (hopefully), you would be well under six hours. Also, wear your tri suit during your swim, and maybe invest in a sleeveless tri suit... or even a two piece. You are not built like a triathlete, and very few brands make suits for your build. Look for brands that make tri suits for swimmers, or brands that make the bottom half for one size, and the top half for another. I use Velor because at least they are USA made, but a two piece Roka would work well for you. You can have just the bottoms on during the swim (under your wetsuit), a skin top on during ride, and a loose tank for the run. It's all about what is comfortable to you during a painful 10-12 hours. You do not need distractions caused by chaffing (especially your nipples being rubbed raw because of salt crystal forming). Baby yourself where you can, pace yourself, and put ice inside the hat, hell I pour water all over myself at aide stations, and know of guys who dump ice down their suits.
Need to take on more fuel it seems. I just did a 70.3 in super hot weather in the Philippines (close to 100 degrees). Nutrition is the most important thing in heat like that. Didn’t drink any water in the race, just Gatorade and popped some extra electrolyte tablets. Drank as much as I could keep down all race and only took in 2 gels. But you’re gonna kill it dude you still have 2 months. Just keep doing your long rides and you’re gonna breeze through the full!
Gary Owens it’s really not worth it on an indoor trainer it would just run straight through and u would heat up so quickly with a had on. Should wear a sweat band like Lionel Sanders
My tried and tested recommendation (did a 70.3 race yesterday) put one cap on then put your goggles on then put a second cap over the top ie. the cap they make you race in
I’m training for the Atlantic City 70.3 on 9/15/19 and literally did the same thing today 9/8/19 I feel your pain and your confidence. Keep pushing the pace you got this and have done an awesome job documenting the process!!
Really well done - your swim was great - the heat hit on the end of the bike and harder on the run. You pushed through and ended with a great day. You are on track for the full.
hey man, it’s okay to swim with the tri suit on. also, i wouldn’t suggest taking longer brakes between transitions during your actual iron man. that’s precious time, and heat shouldn’t be too much of an issue in november. also, panama city/pensacola both get awesome shore winds to cool you off
@@alexditaranto4538 yeah, I made the same suggestion to him too. He is still pretty new, and probably should have found a local Olympic to do first. We all learn by doing, and seeing others

The triathlon community is normally very supportive. We all want to see folks do the very best they can. Unless people never run in Texas heat they wouldn’t understand. Your one tough guy. I would recommend wearing some sort of jok strap to keep your massive America balls from dragging the ground
Lol, my first thought, but all of our first tri suits are black. It usually takes working with a team or a coach to learn that black is a giant heat sink.

Get rid of the Black Tri suit (lighter color). Try goggles under cap, they may get pulled off with all the swimmers who will be around you. Fuel,fuel,fuel....
Hi Nick, good luck on the Ironman, I'm racing my first 70.3 the same day but in Europe. You are so inspirational, I love your motivation. Good luck with the training for the next 7 weeks, race day will be here in a blink!
Great content man. The heat can be super hard to overcome. I think larger athletes struggle in the heat a lot more than smaller athletes. I'd suggest choosing somewhere less humid and cooler for your first race. Good luck!
He's a runner, so it's not that surprising, but also, his brain wasn't really working all that well after what he just finished. All I can think of after a 70.3 is beer garden, sleep, and AYCE sushi.... in that order.
Great job Nick! Are you going to store some of your nutrition on your bike during Ironman? I didn’t see a bento box. Some racers will tape gels on the top tube of the bike and keep bars and gummies in the bento box as well as in the back of the suit. I like to have something substantial to look forward to at the T2 in my bag, be it a cinnamon bun or certain chocolate bar or Mountain Dew, something that not only will have simple carbs and ample calories but will be kind of a reward...something to look forward to.
Great dedication. Like other comments below, get fitted for your bike. You are losing power in your pedaling and it will open you up more and be more comfortable. The swim time is really good. But be aware there is a difference between swimming alone in a lake and having 2K other athletes swimming, bumping into you. Doing the run in 96 degree heat is not the most ideal thing. Good to test your ability and endurance. Only do it if you have someone there to help you with hydration. You gotta remember with your event, you will start early in the morning when it is cooler and your bike time added to that, will lead you to a late morning running where the heat will continue to climb. On the course grab ice and throw it down your suit to keep your core cool. Put it in your hat. Keeping cool and NOT over hydrating will keep you from that feeling of wanting to throw up. You will need to take in electrolytes and other forms of food on the course. Keep up the training and brick workouts. Triathlon T is a great person to get advice and training from.
