Did you like Neil's singing? let us know with a thumbs up either way ;) . Also, please keep an eye on the weather, while generally speaking, these are pleasant riding areas, it can be cold or stormy.
One call out for Big Bend is a real water resupply headache (and it will definitely get very cold at night). It's a real desert out there but truly worth the trip it's gorgeous
Depending on weather this is the best time for South Eastern states. It's cooler but that is what you want trails are over grown and the wild life will carry you away in the summer in these parts! We do all our big outdoor stuff fall/winter here.
Not close to home for me (eastern USA). I bikepacked the New Zealand south island this past December. Stitched together a loop of Rails to Trails gravel routes starting and ending in Dunedin. Check out: Otago Central Rail Trail, Lake Dunstan Cycling Trail, Roxburgh Gorge Trail, & Clutha Gold Trail !! They all connect end-to-end and make an (almost) nice loop!!!!
I did the northern loop of the Monumental Loop in early December. Got in the 20s one night, but we prepared for it and did just fine. One bonus was that we had the trails all to ourselves!
Another great video. I'm headed out to tackle the SoCal Ramble + Baldy Bruiser in a few days. Neil, you have serious skill in front of the camera, from a guy who knows. Respect.
I'd love to know how much snow you run into on the Bruiser route. I'm going to be in the area in a couple weeks and am looking to avoid tromping through a ton of snow
Here's an easy one for San Diego County, right from the airport: Start in Ocean Beach, San Diego River Trail east, Friars Rd to Mission Gorge and Santee, El Cajon. Pick up Old Hwy 80 to Alpine and camp at Viejas Ma Tar Awa reservation campground. Then Viejas Grade Rd (gravel) east Laguna Mtns and Pine Valley to Old 80, follow to Inkopa, and I-8 drop into Anza Borrego Desert at Ocotillo and S-2, north on S-2 to Hwy 78 west to Julian, CA. Then south on 79 through Cuyamaca State Park returning to Old 80. Can add miles from S-1 in Laguna Mtns and descending Kitchen Creek Rd (gravel) back to Old 80. Return to Ocean Beach via Alpine again. Approximately 230 miles, 4 or 5 nights. Leave the beach early morning on a Sat or Sun to avoid traffic in the city. Logistics are easy. Highlights for camping: Ma Tar Awa at reservation; Jacumba Hot Springs area; Aqua Caliente Hot Springs county park on S-2 in desert (also open camping in desert); Cuyamaca State Park; Kitchen Creek Rd primitive camping. Motels in Julian if needed. Happy Trails! ☮
Good call, I've done that in January! Also got snowed on up north. Sourther portion is really nice. I heard they are extending the trail up to Camp Verde, that should be an epic point to point.
@@BIKEPACKINGcom Love your content Neil ! I camp at Bumblebee ranch frequently and have noticed a lot of packers miss the nectar singletrack down to Hidden treasure (they ride Bumblebee rd.) Bumblebee ranch is sweet ! Pipping hot camper showers and a cat named Floyd. Frequently missed is also the Little Pan loop by the Pie shop
@@BIKEPACKINGcom longleaf section from the Florida border to evergreen Alabama I wanted to go further but two of the riders with us have never ridden a bike more than a couple of miles at a time or bike packed before but it was still fun
anyone considering the chiang mai option should keep in mind that the region has some of the worst air quality in the world between January to March thanks to farmers setting their rice field on fire. AQI measurements for PM2.5 particulate is typically between 180-250
Good to know... Does anybody know whether the air quality is decent once you get out of Chiang Mai and into the mountains? Planning to do a ride there in february
When I saw "winter bikepacking" I got excited that maybe this would talk about wintery places to bikepack (possibly with a fat bike) Nothing beats camping in the winter. I might be weird.
Stay home! & Keep your head upon your torso. It's dangerous out there, and you will not be allowed to properly defend yourself with the carrying a Second amendment implement.
What other activities do you enjoy? Personally, I like to ski and do a lot of that in the winter, but this is not a skiing channel. We talk about bikes and camping next to our bikes on this channel. Anywho, thanks for the comment.
@@BIKEPACKINGcom I think skiing and trail running is fantastic at this time of the year. I get a bit worried about our bone health and I think it's important to cross-train. :D You could do a bike to Ski video? I would really like to learn more about fixture of ski touring kit etc. What do you think?

I was just researching this as I was going to head down there, but my trip got canceled. water and camping certainly requires more preparation.
You are awesome and so is all of your incredibly relevant content. Thank you mucho.
I appreciate that!
The Monumental Loop is definitely a good ride in January. Warm during the day, not too bad at night!
As a Chinese fans, looking forward to your new vedios! I learned a lot from your net.

Definitely need more in Texas. It’s rideable all year, plenty of dirt roads and trails.
Florida bikepacking would be interesting. If I won the lottery, riding the Andes loops would be amazing.

I just got back from the north island in NZ great place this time of year coming from PDX!
I did Lanna Kingdom with 2 other buddies last end of Nov/early Dec 2023. It was superb! Highly recommended!
I'm excited to see what's in development, that zone is so special.
