Ain't nothing wrong with either, either. Both are known for late-night service, the prime hours for each of them, but both are more than their rep.
The peanut butter chip waffle does not require any syrup, imho. I literally fold it in half and eat it like a taco, it's just nice waffle with sweet-salty peanut butter!
My friend...apple butter is the absolute superior apple sauce. The pinnacle of apple, far beyond apple pie. If you can get your hands on a jar of it (home canned quart) and some amish bread...you got it made. My mother used to make it. I do miss it. Shout out to peanut butter & apple butter sandwiches.
There's an Apple Butter Festival a couple of hours away in West Virginia every fall. The big competition is for best apple butter, and essentially the trophy goes back and forth every year between a couple of teams from the local senior citizens home. All of these people have been making the stuff, by hand over an open fire, for decades. After the competition people will line up for blocks to buy the teams apple butter, some by the case, and some so picky that they won't get it if it's not still warm.
They've said it many times and it bears repeating: It's not like they don't have many of these ingredients in the UK, but the fact that it simply isn't common to prepare them in these ways or with these spices and flavors. It can be mind-blowing to many people whose palettes are not accustomed to the variety of clashing and complimenting flavors coming in at the same time.
Exactly! And from what I've gathered, UK folks think American desserts/sweets are *too* sweet. So when they do try to replicate our recipes, they lower the sugar and it doesn't quite come out the same. The same goes the other way around - I tried replicating a British Citrus Drizzle Cake and it didn't taste like cake to me, it tasted like citrusy bread. A whole society's palate can be so different, it's fascinating!
Apple butter is delicious! It's basically an applesauce with all sorts of good seasonings like cinnamon and nutmeg and cooked wayyyy wayyy longer than you would an apple sauce until it becomes thicker, richer and more appley than apple sauce and becomes a great spread.
I am a born and raised southerner. Southern hospitality is no myth. It is, however, both a blessing and a curse, at least for me. I am pleased to offer food and drink to guests in my home, but it makes me uncomfortable when I have visitors if I am in the hospital because I can't. 🤷♀️ 😊
I grew up in the North. Went South for Basic Training and never wanted to leave. Now at 52, been to so many places, looking to move to a 4-ever home in the South to garden, cook and bake for anyone who wants to stop by.
Waffle House built a location across the street from my university specifically because they knew they were going to get the 2 am drunk crowd after the bars closed. I was definitely one of those people many Friday and Saturday nights
when i lived in texas, the 24/7 place to go after drinking was a place called jims. the chicken strips with the peppery white texas gravy is what i always craved. now that i live in florida, its probably steak n shake. people are friendly in general but also because they dont want to get $0 tips
Yes many Europeans don't actually understand the vast distances we sometimes travel here in the U.S. Years back while I was in Europe a 4 hour drive could easily take me through 2 or 3 countries, while that drive here might leave me still in my home state (depending upon the direction I travel). Heck twice a years I drive 6 and 1/2 hours so my wife can visit her sisters a couple of states away (we go to them twice and they come to us twice) so everyone can stay in touch. One time I even went with my best friend to see his aunt it was a 22 hour drive (so we traded off driving).
The servers are friendly because they work for tips. From what I hear, Euros get a higher wage and no tips. Us Americans get lower wage and tips. I have been told that us American's make more with the tips. All breakfast places have stuff besides waffles and pancakes no matter what their names. Also, diners are pretty bad ass for breakfast or just a burger as well.
Other people from Britain have said that the service was just as friendly in the hardware stores and other shops as the servers were in restaurants Americans were just friendlier as a general rule
@@ryanlaymon2329 Could be. I have never been out of the country besides Canada and the Caribbean. So nothing to compare it to. I am a New Yorker and though we can get a bad rep for not being friendly, most visitors that come here are often surprised how helpful and friendly we often are.
Waffle house has fried pork chops, hams teak, steak, chicken fried steaks and etc. The waffles might be your smallest portion in a combo order. Please understand the most important fact on Waffle Houses, they are not equal. There are most definitely good one and bad ones.
Everyone is friendly and gives great service. a lot of it is about tipping. Most places now share their tips. Everyone gets a share of the tips, including the bus boy the dishwasher, the cooks everyone. So it makes it more in their best interest to be friendly and helpful.
Apple Butter: Apples, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, brown sugar, salt in a low very slow cook until they break down into a spread. If you have a crockpot or slow cooker, even better. Then blend it up. Awesome stuff. You can buy it in a jar over here, but it's not a hard thing to make at all.
You really need to check out the number of ways that the hashbrowns can be made.... mind blowing. Besides the waffles my fix is a large order of grits with a egg on top with just a lil Tabasco sprinkled on it. I have never had a bad server at any of the waffle house's I have been too.
Flight from Georgia, where I live, to Hawaii is 12 hours with a layover in Los Angeles of an hour or two. Probably almost that length of time to parts of Alaska.
One of my very favorite videos! I love breakfast! I can eat it anytime of the day or night it’s just the greatest. Especially biscuits and gravy creamy gravy with huge chunks of sausage over freshly made biscuits.
I drive 10 hours from Idaho to Las Vegas at least 3 times a year to visit family. In the US, it is insanely large, especially out west and in Texas and Florida.
Miami, Florida to Seattle, Washington flight time is 6 hours 40 minutes. With all the crap at the airport and showing up early for security and such, that's perhaps a 9 hour day. Driving from Miami to Seattle is 48 hours. That's without traffic or construction and without stopping. If you plan on stopping to eat, get gas, wander around a bit, and perhaps sleep, plan on a 4 day trip. For me to shop at any store besides Walmart, it's an hour and half to the big city, shopping, eating, and visiting with family... it's a whole-day affair. Up at 7am and home by 10pm. I usually do that once a month. If family's not available, I can get home by 5.
In America, If you start at a far north or south point on the east or west coast and drive diagonally to the other coast it would take roughly 50 hours of driving at speeds on average of 65-76mph(roughly 105-121kmh) without accounting for gas stops, rests, food stops or any sightseeing you may choose to do along the way. For context the drive from Latvia near the Russian boarder to the southwest coast of Portugal clear across the continent is roughly 44hrs of driving. Just be glad I didn't add travel to/through Hawaii or Alaska to the mix LOL. Alaska is a state that, by itself, is 1/6 the size of the entire continental Europe.
It took 23 hours to get from orange county California, to Spokane we did stop for the night in Northern Utah. There are routes that will get you there in 19 hours though
Around where I live, the bar food is wonderful. Great big burgers, fries, onion, rings, mozzarella sticks things like that nachos just things you’d expect in a bar makes me want to go out tonight but you better have your pocket stuff with money it gets expensive, drinking and eating like that.
Ah!! There's the grape jelly I was talking about!! You'll notice there's nothing on that plate you'd normally put grape jelly on? Yeah...it's for the breakfast sandwich.
Concerning grits: most people probably add butter, salt, and pepper to grits, but I prefer them with sugar, as it turns them into a sweet cereal type dish (think cream of wheat). But either way, I think they're worth trying at least once.
I've never lived in the south mostly the west like Idaho, cali, and vegas.. They are friendly everywhere.. other than the strip on vegas cause they have so many customers that they don't have the time.
To give you some perspective on distance in the U.S.: One time I took a rental car from Michigan and drove it out to Washington State. I was out there about a week and drove back, and put over 6,000 miles on the car. Thank god for unlimited mileage on the rental car, lol
18MAY23: Apple butter: Apple slices or chunks stewed down so much with sugar and spices that it loses shape and becomes spreadable like room temperature butter.
Their are local fast food chains like Whataburger here in Texas which you should check out Texans love Whataburger because they do it the Texas way! Oh... What A Buger Should Be!
Being from south Texas I was raised on good food. There a lot of food eaten with your hands. Now I’m in West Virginia where the food is ok. Northern restaurants mislabel chicken fried steak as country fried steak. I was in a Cheddars and ordered a chicken fried steak. I was served a chicken patty instead of beef. I would love a Whataburger. The family sold the business to a Chicago company so it probably won’t be as good but would still beat the pants off of McDonalds or Wendys.
I would say that the closest to A Waffle House would have been the Chick-fil-a Dwarf House down on the southside, the very first Chick-fil-a restaurant ever! Open 24/7 in Hapeville, Ga., built to service Ford workers and Delta Airlines personnel, one side of the restaurant was standard Chick-fil-A take out service, BUT the other side was a "cook to order" Diner. They had the same decor, the same food, the same kind of customer, always jam packed at 3:30 in the morning, 24 hours every day of the week except Sundays...plus they made better waffles. but recently they broke it all down and put in this new factory fresh store...Waffle House became my goto only after they did away with the old way there, that one was the King!...
My family used to make the trek to the city once every couple of months and we used to go to Cracker Barrel for breakfast at dinner. I like both Cracker Barrel and Waffle House but I prefer the local mom and pop places any day.
Technically waffles can be made sweet or savoury. A "basic" waffle is, at the most, mildly sweet and close to "neutral" so you can really pair it with anything. It's pretty common for many North American breakfast places (chains or independent) to offer plates that combine waffles with proteins (usually eggs, sausages, bacon and/or ham obviously) and some syrup on the side for you to add to your liking. Some people love the sweet-salty combo so they'll pour their syrup on the waffles and don't mind if it gets on their meats. Apple butter is pretty much a very cooked down apple compote/jam so it's super concentrated apple spread.
@@rollomaughfling380 didn't wanna blow his brain; gotta ease him into it. (Also I don't think the chicken & waffle combo is a common offering where I live, although most people here probably do know of it and don't find it odd.)
While not always true, because there are always exceptions to the rule, the southern states of the US are known for their hospitality. Anything from stopping and talking to interesting people in the streets to welcoming strangers into their home for food. My own grandmother made it a point that anyone that came to her house was fed before they left, it didn't matter how she felt about that person everyone shared the table. Southern food is comfort food, lots of flavor and lots of love go into it, the dishes are like hugs on a plate.
Just a pro tip..... some of the best places to get things like hambugers, sandwiches, (etc.) are bowling alleys. That old greasy spoon type cheeseburger and fries or a patty melt.... great in some grills in bowling alleys. A few comments have already said it, but I will agree about skipping some of the chain restaurants. You'll find some if the best food in smaller mom and pop or family owned type spots. Waffle House does food like you saw in the video pretty good, and so does IHOP.
They are so friendly cause their tips rely on it. Most of the time the people are just genuinely friendly too. But the 3am Waffle House shift are probably drunk as well so they are just vibing.
Good service is an essential element in American restaurants. Much different than Europe. BTW, Crabs have Shacks. You might like waffles and fried chicken.
the simplest (not entirely accurate) explanation of *_APPLE BUTTER :_* get yourself some apple sauce. start cooking it. add cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, mace, ginger, or other spices that you might like. cook it down to a thick paste that is the texture of slightly warm (not melted) butter. whip it even smoother in a food processor. strain it through a very fine sieve. enjoy it on toast, pancakes, waffle, roast pork, or damn near anything else. sometimes i will just eat a spoon or two out of the jar.
Wife of the South African here. (As you could probably guess from the last name.) We live in the heart of Waffle House country. In the US, neither waffles or pancakes are sweets. They are breakfast items. If you want them sweet, you add syrup. If you don't want them sweet, then you leave the syrup off. And Waffle House is not a place for sweets. Nor for that matter is the international house of pancakes aka IHOP. It's a place where you can go and get diner food, like all day breakfasts, hamburgers, grilled cheese, etc. It's open 24 hours, and they are ubiquitous off American highways. So if you're traveling overnight, they are absolute heaven. But the other crowd that tends to be there are drunks. And college kids. A surprising amount of kids from universities. My husband swears that there are no better hash browns around than the ones at Waffle House. You can get them a variety of ways. My husband usually tries a different way each time. He's never complained about any of them. So if you're in the US, especially if you're out late at night, it might be worth a stop. Now personally, I prefer either Denny's or IHOP, which you can often find also off highways and open 24 hours. (IHOP is a lot less likely to be 24 hours since COVID, but you can still find it on weekends.) To me Waffle House is okay but kind of greasy. Now if it's during the day, stop at Cracker Barrel hands down. Better food. Better prices. And a much better clientele.
Jono, there's a RUclips video of an episode of Anthony Bourdain's show (RIP), where he turns up at a Waffle House with a southern friend/Chef, which likely inspired this. You gotta do that one.
I don't drink at all but I think the food at Waffle House looks great. I love waffles and pancakes. Some regional chains are pretty good. I love Culver's (Midwest US chain and there's a few locations in the south). Their butterburgers are so good.
cheese hashbrowns with fried egg on top and a dash of hot sauce and a coffee. to me that's 🤌🤌🤌 peak waffle house. (can't forget the side of sausage with syrup on top)
Waffle house a great place to eat especially breakfast, I used to be a truck driver there's one place that I'd pick up at and I would have to wait till the next morning to pickup my load so I would stop at the waffle house and eat there and stay in the parking lot there and eat breakfast in the morning before I left to go pickup my load it was always good food there.
waffle house waffles are basically the flavor of butter. the syrup is like an afterthought to the buttery waffle in my opinion. my favorite thing about waffle house is its so god darn cheap. the food can just keep coming and when they get an order wrong, if you sit beside the back door where they go to clean dishes, they might just give you what they were going to throw away, free food. i got like 10 dishes for like 30$, it is always enjoyable when i go there
I’m like you I don’t like to sweet things. The bacon, the eggs, the potatoes, a burger, patty and scrambled eggs were my favorites a nice steak and eggs. I’m so hungry.
A southern staple after the bar. I always get the Super Star special. Im in Florida and when we have a hurricane coming, we just call to see if the Waffle House is still open. If not, we hit I95 and go north. Waffle House never closes!
Up here there were fewer Waffle Houses, but Denny's everywhere. Probably not as good, but at 3am after a concert or long drive even the cholesterol at a Denny's is fantastic.
The Southern people are very sweet and friendly..North, New York Boston Massachusetts not really and can be rude ...very rude 😅 Am from Boston so I know. Keep in mind when drunk anything & everything taste FREAKING AWESOME 😂😅 Many places have their famous dish but serve many other items. I've seen Chinese Restaurants have pizza roastbeef etc .

The waffles themselves are mildly sweet it's the amount of syrup that one puts on determines the sweetness
Over time I've come to like them with almost no syrup on them. I'll eat a blueberry one without syrup.

Truth. You forgot to mention "chicken and waffles," though.
@@rollomaughfling380 didn't wanna blow his brain; gotta ease him into it. (Also I don't think the chicken & waffle combo is a common offering where I live, although most people here probably do know of it and don't find it odd.)
@@offthesidelines "Not common where you live?" Gotta pack up and move then, bro! 😜
Makes me hungry just watching it.
Most affordable restaurant meal you will find in the USA. Hashbrowns are excellent. Get them smothered and covered
Very popular with truck drivers
If you haven't yet, I think you'd enjoy watching a video on the Blue Angels
They are so friendly cause their tips rely on it. Most of the time the people are just genuinely friendly too. But the 3am Waffle House shift are probably drunk as well so they are just vibing.
I love the sweet stuff! ❤ That's my favorite type of dish
the middle guy is actually a chef who has been working meal services in war torn Ukraine. I like my waffles with fresh fruit.
Good service is an essential element in American restaurants. Much different than Europe.
BTW, Crabs have Shacks.
You might like waffles and fried chicken.
I think you would like Tiramisu, Italian coffee cheese cake
Apple butter is great
This is chef Noah Sims. He has since met a beautiful lady and is married. He has also become a vegan but says it has made him feel so much healthier.
I said this on another channel, but I'll spam it here too: You've heard of the "Full English," the All Star Special is the "Full American."
The waffle isnt sweet. You can get that and eat it as a fried bread basically with your other food. Like even a waffle and burger combo
18:36 Google food near me is amazing to find great spots
You can get all kinds of food there
the simplest (not entirely accurate) explanation of *_APPLE BUTTER :_*
get yourself some apple sauce.
start cooking it.
add cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, mace, ginger, or other spices that you might like.
cook it down to a thick paste that is the texture of slightly warm (not melted) butter.
whip it even smoother in a food processor.
strain it through a very fine sieve.
enjoy it on toast, pancakes, waffle, roast pork, or damn near anything else.
sometimes i will just eat a spoon or two out of the jar.
I love Waffle House. Chicken Melt plate, scattered, smothered, covered and pecan pie on the grill with butter!
That guy should have his own channel
Could you please do the REAL Super Bowl snacks video? There's amazing meat dishes in the video I'm 100% sure you'll love.
Yes, @A C, Jolly's most recent Super Bowl Snacks video was great (the first was entirely off the mark)!
Waffle House in a Southern tradition when your snockered. That chef had to catch a flight at 5am, I pity his hangover.
They change the grease when they close
Jono, there's a RUclips video of an episode of Anthony Bourdain's show (RIP), where he turns up at a Waffle House with a southern friend/Chef, which likely inspired this. You gotta do that one.
I don't drink at all but I think the food at Waffle House looks great. I love waffles and pancakes.
Some regional chains are pretty good. I love Culver's (Midwest US chain and there's a few locations
in the south). Their butterburgers are so good.
Seeing their eyes I do believe that all that tasty food ended up on footpath within one hour hahaha
cheese hashbrowns with fried egg on top and a dash of hot sauce and a coffee. to me that's 🤌🤌🤌 peak waffle house.
Apple butter is not butter. Apple butter is a very thick applesauce. Just cook applesauce until it's very thick. It's delicious.
I’ve never had a waffle at Waffle House and I hammer it quite often over my 60 years. The hash browns
Lol.. you can be more 12 hours drive from one side of Texas... just to THE OTHER SIDE OF TEXAS! lol
The guy in the center (Noah Sims) was a contestant on Hell's Kitchen.
u got a friend in charlotte nc
Up here there were fewer Waffle Houses, but Denny's everywhere. Probably not as good, but at 3am after a concert or long drive even the cholesterol at a Denny's is fantastic.
Oh yeah. It's called Southern hospitality. Everyone is welcome into you cause trouble😂
Waffle House, double hash browns ‘all the way’ is what I always get. No sweet…just rich and savory.
Believe it or not the guy in the middle he's a chef
The Southern people are very sweet and friendly..North, New York Boston Massachusetts not really and can be rude ...very rude 😅 Am from Boston so I know. Keep in mind when drunk anything & everything taste FREAKING AWESOME 😂😅 Many places have their famous dish but serve many other items. I've seen Chinese Restaurants have pizza roastbeef etc .
Congrats on the new laptop
Its the same with IHOP. Its not strictly pancakes.
