    The truck definitely drives different with this new tune, so I thought I would do an update as far as the drivability of the truck. It still has no low end torque in that first gear which is a given with the stock torque converter, but as far as the other gears they are shifting at the right rpm which helps with any bogging down of the engine. The engine is running like a champ and so far just a reliable as stock, so I'd say if you're in the market for a cam swap I'd say go for it!

    I just did TF TrackMax cam, headers, air intake, exhaust w/ CARB cat delete, and larger TB on my Gen IV 5.3. Ran terrible after it warmed up and the computer had its way. It’s at the tuner now, can’t wait to see the difference. Going to lower it slightly, get better tires, etc. doing all the work myself saved me a lot of money. All told I spent $1400 for all of that after using the military discount through summit racing.

    Definitely tuning is a big deal. A small stall and a good person that really knows how to tune you could run a huge cam and it be perfect on the road daily.
    Making more horsepower doesn't always mean getting bad mpg. There is a point where yes it will. But also you can do Long tubes and full exhaust intake and all the small stuff and a good cam and a great tune you can actually still get great mpg for what it is. My 04 z71 5.3 I ran a 2600 triple disk yank and 220 cam 33" tires 373s long tubes and a great efi live tune. It would get 20-21 mpg on the highway and I could squeeze 16 in town.

      John Lynn do you have a part number for that cam bro? I put the same 5.3 lm7 in my regal and I want to cam swap for daily driving

    2:11 not always true, part of the benefit of aftermarket Cams if they can increase efficiency to help increase hp, and if the increased efficiency is around cruising rpm then you will gain mileage.

    I used to have 3.73 gears , my silverado Sense then has been lifted with a 7.5 inch lift and 35x12.5s BUT , i used to get 11-13 average mpg stock gears with the lift and 35s I ran for about a month or two till I put the 4.56 in , and NOW with the 4.56 gears and long tube headers (no cats) and a dual glass pack muffler straight , I average the exact same as stock now mpg , there's a sweet spot on the highway where I average 19ish mpg right at 72mph.. and it averages about 13-14 city and highway and that's with a 7.5 lift and 35s .. doesn't hurt to try to re gear it , it's about 850$ for the kit if you do it yourself , I went with Yukon

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  7 лет назад +2

      +Hunter Basselite I redid the gears in my old jeep, and put 4.56 gears in it and made it a beast. We did it at home, it wasn’t too hard but the job definitely wasn’t perfect either.

    • @hunterbasselite6826
      @hunterbasselite6826 7 лет назад

      John Vesely yeah we did it ourselves too I had to save up money for the front kit too , so the 4wd was useless for a few months it was a time consuming process not really hard just a lot of time spent , but the 4.56 are really fun , especially 0-40ish it gets up and goes !! ....Are you running 3.73 gears ?

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  7 лет назад

      +Hunter Basselite I’m runinning the stock 3.42 gears, but I have a 6 speed in the truck so it helps with the ratios

      gears mean aloottttt bro I have a 7" lifted tahoe, when i first lifted it on 3.73 on 35s it got 11.9mpg average. I average 12 city 14 highway with a cam and heavier set up now. also with no cats and glass packs.

    • @hunterbasselite6826
      @hunterbasselite6826 7 лет назад

      DSE Ik that's what I'm saying ! And same that's prolly what I averaged ... I average about exactly 15mpg highway/city now with the 4.56 gears tho ... are you still running the 3.73s ?

  • @reyperez3424
    @reyperez3424 7 лет назад +1

    I have a 6.2 in my 07 and a 224/224 114 LSA original 3.73 and I still get 16/17 mpg the same mileage as when it had the 6.0 (vortecMax) but the new 60hp does feel stronger.

    Hey John I just Cammed and did a stall converter plus long tube headers. Once it warms up it will not run anymore. I guess I'm going to need a Custom Tune

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah your going to need a tune, doing the dod delete causes it to go into limp mode. I had to tow the truck to go get it tuned. After that it should be fine, you need to do a few heat cycles if you changed the springs to make sure they seat right before you go tune it also.

    • @thejackgraves13
      @thejackgraves13 6 лет назад

      John Vesely Yeah I did new dual springs, valve seals and titanium retainers from Texas Speed. DOD Delete also. Thanks for the info. Man so disappointing. Did all this work and my cheap ass Mail custom tunes Suck

    Tuned and Rolling man. I think the oring was not on the input shaft. Converter won't lock up. So I gotta pull it back out and check for the oring and I'm going 3000-3200 stall. If you need a stall I'll send you my TCI 2600-2700 cheap for a 6L80 email man

    Hello like the videos you put out. I have a stock '03 4dr Tahoe LT 5.3L 4x4 Z is the 8th in VIN I believe it has the L59 motor. So I want to upgrade my motor and make it a little spicy and at least get 375-400 hp. My motor is pushing 265k miles and still strong as ever. What I am unsure of...do I rebuild and cam up the L59 or find one that is LS series or something. I haven't been able to find that part out What L series motor I need to make the best beneficial upgrade for my Tahoe. So I am all ears to anyone that can lead me in the right direction. Thank you

    • @chrishansen7004
      @chrishansen7004 3 года назад

      Honestly you could take apart the motor and inspect it to see what it needs new set of gaskets etc then get a btr stage 2 Texas speed stage 2 truck cam etc and you'll be in the 400hp range, don't need a converter and you keep all of your low end power which you really need to haul that heavy ass Tahoe around everywhere

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  7 лет назад

      +Ben Rogers I haven't gotten it dynoed with all the mods so far, waiting for a dyno day so it's a little cheaper. But I'm guessing 400+ at the crank maybe. The 0 to 60 is about 1.70 seconds faster with the stock torque converter, with a higher stall it will launch a lot quicker and take advantage of the cam.

      bjammin if you do mostly city driving 13-16 is about the norm for a full size truck. Probably 18-22 highway. There are so many variables, but over all that's all your really going to get out of a v8 full size truck.

    • @JohnVesely

      Everything fit fine but the cross over on the y pipe wouldn’t clear the transmission so we hade to reshape it.

    I have a 2008 5.3 liter z71. It has the z55 tow package so it has the 410 gears in it. I want to do a cam/dod delete/long tube headers/cat delete into single 3 inch drop behind rear axle/ CAI and tune. What do you think?

    • @moncier77
      @moncier77 7 лет назад

      What cam do you recommend

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  7 лет назад +2

      +moncier77 I say do it, you’ll see a big difference than stock, especially with those 4.10 gears. Just don’t go too big of a cam if you don’t plan on putting a higher stall torque converter or if it’s your Dailey driver.

    • @AppSkii
      @AppSkii 7 лет назад +2

      I gained an easy 55.8HP on the dyno with a low lift stage 3 texas speed cam. I didnt want anything to big because my truck is also lifted. I needed to somewhat have gas milage. The cam I have is a 216/220 .550 .550. I gained the 55.8 off just the cam and a custom tune gained another 23-25hp.. Dyno sit me at 374.2hp when stock is 295 on my 2004 tahoe. works great with my stock stall!

      @@AppSkii what is dod delete ? Thx

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  5 лет назад +1

      It means displacement on demand. It’s to help with fuel efficiency by basically making the engine a 4 cylinder instead of a 8 cylinder when you don’t need the extra power. All the delete does is replace the lifters and the valley cover so it will always use 8 cylinders. It makes it less prone to lifter failure.

      John Vesely. Yeah I have a '12 4x4 5.3 that I had tuned in May (HP tuners) one of the things that I thought these trucks needed were 3.73' s like in the '96-99 trucks. After driving mine with the tune I knew that gears would be the next step. For me anyway.

      Putting a 6.0L engine (allupgraded with a stage 2 cam long tube headers) in my silverado. Same as yours but its lifted 6" with 35" tires. Wondering if i should go with 4.10s. Using stock stall too. She will be done next week. We will see 👍

      The 4.10s will help a lot especially with 35s and put less strain on your transmission.
