Thank you 337 Speed for taking the time to produce this video. This is why I love RUclips - knowledge transfer from experienced professionals. I recently had my 2018 Corvette Grand Sport cammed with headers, cold air intake, no cat x-pipe, and a mellow exhaust. I love the performance and sound, but I'm not too fond of it when I come to a slow stop or let off of the brake from a complete stop to rolling - my Vette jolts and jerks a lot. It's like trying to get a wild horse to stay still. Is this an unintended consequence of a cam swap?
Great video. Really well explained. The visuals were a real bonus. I’ve watched plenty of cam videos and this one probably gave the clearest explanations. Nice work.
Just wanted to say thank you for this video!! I have the DOD delete kit, Springs, Push Rods and TSP Stage 2 cam for my '16 Sierra sitting in my garage and have been wracking my brain as to whether I need a higher stall torque converter. I've had a Circle D 3000-3200 stall converter in my shopping cart for the past week but wanted to make sure I actually needed it. Your video made buying an easy choice. Thanks again.
Definitely helpful for my 11 5.3 Yukon. It's just a daily driver but I'm just looking to delete the mds and give it some torque. I'm not looking to blast out ear drums or dump thousands and thousands into it. Thank you for the straight forward video on where to start.
Another aspect to think about is what is the purpose of the vehicle? You can build a truck to be as fast as a corvette or even faster. Low end cams are only good for daily’s and grocery getters. A big duration cam can still be handled if built right in a 5.3 of course you can only go so big. I’ve seen people put 235/240 cams in a 5.3 with a 4000 stall and a shot of nitrous on 3.73 rear end and it’s a nasty setup of course it’s all preference for NA or a boosted setup.
Damn, I want to try out that Little Chopper in my LS6 CTS-V. I have a previous version BTR Stage 4 and PRC 2.5 243 heads that I didn't have milled due to the cam size. I want something smaller with roughly a 110 LSA for more low end torque and be able to mill the heads to gain power everywhere. I'll also do a before and after dyno.
Great video Sir, very well said. My cam swap came because of a lifter failure. So I went with complete DOD Delete. I also did LT Headers and 3 inch catback while I was there. Truck was tuned and drives great, for the most part. Its a slug down low, which drives me crazy... after its gets up to speed its fine. My mechanic never mentioned anything about a higher stall converter. Now I really need to find one that is well suited for daily driving. Vehicle is an 07 Suburban, she's a big girl, but I like her.

I thought you explained that well. Could have mentioned Advance. Could have mentioned events. You did mention overlap. I had a '93 RX-7 w/ a '02 LS-1 and M6, long tubes and LS-6 intake. Because of this manifold, I wanted the intake valve to close @ 42abdc. If I had a FAST I could close at 44, if I had a Super Victor - maybe 48 or 50. I wanted a cam with throttle response and street manners. 222/226 112 +1 with lift just under .600" to be easy on the valve tips and that soft camMotion ramp speed.
Well done. Explained in simple easy to understand terms that make sense to the average shade-tree mechanic. You don't need an engineering degree to understand what is said.
thank you for all the great information. i was thinking about pulling the trigger on a camshaft for my truck. But you recommended to buy intake, headers, etc first. Which ill most definitely do before doing a cam swap. thank you !
I just rebuilt my lc9 5.3 completely. I installed the Howard’s rattler cam 226/232 109lsa running 33” tires(4x4) with stock stall converter and 3.42’s. Freakin truck pulls so damn hard after 3200 rpm. Swapping to 3.90-4.10 gears real soon. I tow a lil bit. But damn it’s a freakin beast
I have 09 Silverado 5.3l. I have long tube headers with 3 inch exhaust. 3.73 gears 4 speed trans. My question is, in your opinion: 1) what would you suggest for a cam in this application? 2) do you think this gear ratio is ok for a mild cam? Appreciate the video and any advice. I gotta say I started this video just to see what you said and had low expectations...it is youtube after all But I was pleasantly surprised, your info is good
Thanks for the info ! I was looking into a stage 3 or 4 cam for my Silverado FBO but after this video I’m thinking ported heads , 102 mm tb and a stage 2 truck cam might be a better route 🤔
BTR Truck norris cam, TBSS intake, 90mm TB, LONGTUBE HEADERS and exhaust (think Speed Engineering). You won't be disappointed. 102 TB is not necessary. What year is your truck?
I have an 05 silverado crew cab 5.3l I'm going to be doin long tubes and catless y pipe I have had the trans build with high performance shift kit and more I'm thinking of the btr truck norris cam kit with new factory converter
Finally someone who knows about cam applications great vid ,,I Would like to ask you what would you suggest for a cam in a LQ9 Im swapping in my 85 Camaro Iroc want a step above the stock cam that will give me power across the board that works with stock converter nothing radical just a step above stock ,,Thank you
Thank you 337 speed. We'll we did everything right, exhaust, gears, converter etc with a Texas speed stage 2 cam, and the best possible auto cal tune thru Blackbear performance. It's a 13 Caprice with the L77 flex fuel, runs strong, idles ok but keeps setting lean codes, MAF codes, high and low voltage on O2 sensors. Can a cammed LS ever get along with the oem computer? Or should we just delete those un-needed sensors? Thanks for a great video.:)
I'm having the exact same problems with my g body ls swap i just ordered a complete Holley ECU wiring and 8inch Terminator it will be done with a week or 2 I'll let you know if this fixes the issue
What would be better Stage 1 btr truck cam or the Texas speed camshaft. The truck will be a Daily driver with at the market headers. The BTR cam is 206/212 . 553/553 112LSA . The Texes speed cam is 208/214 . 550/.550 it is a low life truck cam tell me what you would think is this best and love the videos
Kinda wish this video was out before i did my cam feel like i couldve gone with a better cam but at the time i didnt think much of it or know what i know now. Might just do some research on different cams and probably swap it out over the winter or something
Thank you Sir Good content. I'm putting the BTR 2 Truck cam and lifter kit next week in my 2011 Tahoe. I'm running true duals and CAI with the cam. I will be using it to tow mostly, so I'm guessing the stock converter in the 6L80 and factory 3.42s will make a good combo.
I have a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado classic 4.8 4 door crew cab any suggestions on cams ? I don't want anything to hard but just a nice power and solid sound.
I got a 05 Sierra with a 5.3 rn I got a 227/238 cam, trunnion upgrade, .660 dual springs, and stainless intake/exhaust valves if that even makes a difference, 3200 FTI stall, tbss intake with 36lb injectors, long tube headers, and stock heads, ARP Main studs and ARP head studs it’s slow until I get to 60mph but it’s still a base tune I sent my computer off and told the guy everything so maybe that’s why but Ik I went to big on the cam but… what should I do get a larger stall or what I’ve already got 3.73 gears as well might need to throw a shot on it it’s freshly built with new all new bearings and my builder gapped the rings for me just in case I did want to put a shot on it but what would u recommend I do I don’t really want to run nitrous/boost
I am looking to swap a 5.3 L LS from a 2005 Silverado into a 2007 Chevy avalanche and I am wondering how to get the factory rated horsepower out of the 05 LS and make at least the same factory horsepower that the newer LS does in the 07 avalanche.
I got a 5.3 bored out with a 3200 stall and a Brian tooley racing gen 3 cam and long tube headers nothing done to rear end. Spins a little not to much. What gear ratio should I do so it can launch harder ? I’ve recently upgraded to a built 4l65e since I blew my 4l60e lol
I have a stock 5.3l stock rear gear stock stall converter ….. I want it to be a daily driver but want a bit more power and a nice sound … it’s a 2005 GMC Yukon 2wd …. What do you recommend I do. Thank you for taking the time to read and reply…..!
so one thing i’d like some insight on my truck is a 5.3 all bone stock sitting with 35’s if i was to get a texas speed stage 1 how would that play with the stock converter and a stock trans with shift kit and corvette servo
I don’t like that they don’t disclose the exhaust duration but more than likely it’s a 228-230 duration on exhaust to get that choppy idle, Low LSA is the key. I’d get it and if you want I can build you a cam package shipped to your door👍
What Cam should I go with, I know almost nothing about cams so any help is appreciated. Im looking for a good chop that and performance. Here is a run down of my build. 89 Silverado, Ford 9' rear end with 3.89 gears, eaton tru-trac worm gear, BorgWarner S/480 80/96 with 1.15A/R, Stage 5 built 4L80e, Yank SC3000 billet 10.5' tc, 6.0 408 will all forged internals on e85.
Hello I am a bag of your video I find them useful so thanks for the grind I had a question if you had time I am building a 72 Chevy pickup got ly6 got fast lsxr 102 sniper intake and rec port heads long tube headers 373 gear and I will buy a converter my question what cam would you put in I am looking for a descent chop not huge and low end mid range power but I still want to drive on long trips and make it drive and be reliable not trying to make crazy power just sound mean and run good be reliable I hope this message reaches your input is appreciated and respected not afraid to throw money at this
I’d go with this 6.0 Stage 2 High Lift www.madhatgarage.com/p/60-truck-camshaft-stage-2--210216-1165 I still retain 18-20MPG highway and doesn’t buck even with stock converter. This one is a little more aggressive so it’ll chop but with a decent 2600RPM stall you’ll be fine. Put 10K miles so far and 0 issues
Dang I was just gonna do a 210/218 .500 cam on my stock 5.3 truck but hearing you talk about rear gears and long tube headers makes me wonder if I should go bigger if I'm doing all those other supporting mods
@@adfasdfasdfluy i have 07 tahoe with 5.3 i just bought the truck Norris cam with springs long tube headers ls7 lifters the truck has 799 heads and 3.42 gear in they rear end do you recommend porting the heads on this setup and different rear gearing

Believe I have a 2012 Chevy express 3500 with a 6.0 She is a daily driver Used for work and pulling my trailer it's getting time to overhaul the top end and I was thinking about possibly putting in a cam and polishing the heads up do you have any advice on what cam I should use
what would be a good cam for a '16 Yukon Denali? Nothing crazy just want to womp on it here and there and have it sound GOOD. I know nothing about GM cars rn :( 6.2 tuned on E55 403wh/460wtq
Looking at a ss2 GPI cam setup that's .639/.639 lift and 223/235 duration. I'm doing dual springs, pushrods, trunnions, lifters and dod delete. it's a 6th Gen Camaro. Only thing im concered about is if it will be ok with my stock valves and secondly do I need to do any head work or does that not matter?
Hey I got a 06 Chevy Silverado 5.3 cat-eye I want that chop sound but I don't care about the performance what cam is best for that & it's a daily driver
Great vid.. what about the motor heads have a junk yard 5.3 Built by Steve Catarino have none of those parts from the 2002 Chevy donor truck. The trans, intake, long tube headers . basically it’s still short block. But need a cam… stock heads not gone through yet . ( as money permits) What is recommended then heads. Or redo my stock heads then get the cam ?
In about a month I’ll have my new remanufactured engine installed. Stock 5.3 in a 05 Silverado 1500 2wd All I want is the chop, was looking at Texas speed monster chopper, with a 3600 stall. I can’t seem to find out what other supporting mods I would need to ensure my new cherry doesn’t pop. I know the springs, and rods are on the list but what els? Or can you recommend a cam to give me the chop that won’t require a new stall.
Truck Norris might get you some chop without a stall, but in most cases your gunna want a stall even stock. If you want alot of chop TSP bfd cam lots of duration and tight lsa but peak power about 7k, TSP also sells a cam kit that should have everything you need.
If all you want is chop and aren't concerned about more power, you can make it chop at idle in Park or Neutral with just tuning. Of course, a good tuner can tweak the stock tune for more power at the wheels while they're tuning your idle for chop, so it'd kinda be a win-win for you without turning a single wrench.
Hey man i want to build a caprice ppv in the near future have you built any of those with a cam for the streets? I want to be NA for a bit then later upgrade fuel and put a torque storm supercharger on it but im new to the LS world and dont know where to start lol any tips are appreciated.
I'm looking to cam my 4.3 v6 single cab Chevy rwd base I want the choppy sound now it's stock I don't plan to tow anything I plan to turn my truck to a muscle truck but having trouble finding the exhaust I want before I cam swap my truck what should I do first and what should I get to support the swap I really want the muscle and the choppy sound unfortunately I'm stuck with a 2001 4.3 v6 standard 1500 Silverado please help me get the most out of my truck
Okay so I got a 5.3 Chevy Tahoe '05 stock and I want to get a class 2 cam where do I start will the cam ride with stock transmission and intake I've read that you can put a stage 2 cam and still have everything stock transmission and intake you just gain more horse power
Big fan! I just want to know what cam I should be looking for, for my 4.8 2003 Silverado! (getting long tube headers) I’m willing to spend the extra $$ I just want a good sounding & running street truck!
I’d say get the Lil Chopper and then get a 3k stall and upgrade gears. If you go too heavy on the cam on a 4,8 it’ll be a dog below 4K and you lose to people with less aggressive cams but more gear ratio.
4.8 needs stage 1 cam stage 2 is to big get a 2800 stall headers and trailblazer ss intake good tune it might make close to 370 wheel but save the money and get a 5.3 or 6.0
Wussup bro great vid now I have a greater understanding of cams and I got a 5gen 5.3 Silverado and thinking of putting the chop monster in it and I’m looking for power and chop to u think it’s the best one to go for ?
Hey man so I have a question I’m looking to cam my 5.7l vortec I was wondering what would be best to buy to make sure the truck actually lasts a little longer lol
Hey hey so was wanted to do a cam swap in my 2011 Escalade. I already have purchased shorty headers, Afm delete. So what do you think would be the better cam. I also don't mind buying a converter if needed.
Titan 2 6.2 Truck camshaft by cam motion, that paired with a Circle D 2800-3000 stall would be killer for a street/daily driver. We are dealers for both so can set you up with a package deal for a good price, just email sales@madhatgarage.com
@@337speed I just got the truck Norris cam long tube headers for my 07 tahoe 5.3 with 799 heads im thinking about getting the heads ported do you recommend this
I have an 02 2500hd 6.0 LQ4 engine i plan to take it apart replce the lifters oil pump timing chain and slap it back together with shorty headers and a slight upgrade with a cam. Is there a cam i can use that doesn't require a tune and wouldn't be too much for the truck to handle ?
I have the same motor if you go anything over stage 2 you have to do springs and push rods ...so I went with a stage 1 thumprcam you don't need anything else and I gained 50hp and more torq
My crew cab 07 Silverado 4wd (new body style) has the 5.3 LH6 with 243 heads and afm. what's a good set up? P.s. i did the AFM delete but left the original cam in it cuz i can't afford one lol what do?
I have a gen 5 Camaro SS with the L99 in it with long tube headers..an I have nooo idea which cam I want or need to get ..I know I want more power an a deep choppy cam ...can u point me in the right direction 🙏🙏🙏

I gotta say I started this video just to see what you said and had low expectations...it is youtube after all
But I was pleasantly surprised, your info is good
Thanks for the info !
@@jaydubb71 02 with an lq4 , intake , long tube headers and full exhaust are the only mods at the moment

Thabk you. Watching this in the Philippines
Growing daily my guy shout outs to you bruh
Great information, I emailed with my question yesterday. ty.
Imma have to go back into the oilfield and make lots of overtime and come see 337Speed to help me add hp to my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 slt 4.7
How about an lt4 guide for a cam? Could you do a video for that? You can include the lt1 platform as well
Oh man this is so freaking good dude, so helpful thank you so much

hi i i have a stock gto 5.7 with 3" long tube headers and 799 cast heads i want you recommendation for a daily drive cam
You should be running 3.90 or 4.10's. 3.42's are terrible for towing idk why Chevy didn't even have an option for 3.73's atleast
I have a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado classic 4.8 4 door crew cab any suggestions on cams ? I don't want anything to hard but just a nice power and solid sound.
I’m curious on the exhaust set up on a black single cab. It sounds pretty good.
what would be your thought on a 03 tahoe, 3.73 gears. cam, torque converter, gears etc. to have a nice all around performance suv. thanks Anthony
What rear gears, converter and cam package would you recommend trying to make my 2017 tahoe with a 5.3 reach 650-700hp with a supercharger added
Lq4 6.0 with 2” lth 373 gears and 3000 stall best cam for that application
What stage cam ?
I have a stock 5.3l stock rear gear stock stall converter ….. I want it to be a daily driver but want a bit more power and a nice sound … it’s a 2005 GMC Yukon 2wd …. What do you recommend I do. Thank you for taking the time to read and reply…..!
so one thing i’d like some insight on my truck is a 5.3 all bone stock sitting with 35’s if i was to get a texas speed stage 1 how would that play with the stock converter and a stock trans with shift kit and corvette servo
Thank you for all the tips and insight and information
What you think about the new truck Norris cam from BTR? Have a 6.0 lq9 thinking about putting that cam in it. .552/.552 107 lsa
I don’t like that they don’t disclose the exhaust duration but more than likely it’s a 228-230 duration on exhaust to get that choppy idle, Low LSA is the key. I’d get it and if you want I can build you a cam package shipped to your door👍

I’d go with this 6.0 Stage 2 High Lift www.madhatgarage.com/p/60-truck-camshaft-stage-2--210216-1165
I still retain 18-20MPG highway and doesn’t buck even with stock converter. This one is a little more aggressive so it’ll chop but with a decent 2600RPM stall you’ll be fine. Put 10K miles so far and 0 issues

All I want is the chop, was looking at Texas speed monster chopper, with a 3600 stall.
