Absolutely love your videos. Flying by the seat of your pants is a lost art form, glad to see some still keeping the old ways alive.
Thank you bro. This is a big need to know. Once I get done with my Ls swap in my 03 Crown Vic I may be able to drive to a tuner. Bro this is Def some good content.
Man this video calmed me down for real. Just blew my lm7 in my 99 silverado. Got a 04 4.8 for 100 bucks with a dropped lifter. Put a truck norris NSR cam, ls7 lifters, upgraded trunion rocker arms and new pushrods. Start it and it's ticking, goes away but then it starts missing and won't idle once it's a little warm. I cleaned the throttle body while it was apart. Had 321k miles of shit on it.
On DBC you may have to open the throttle blade for a bigger cam. Reset the tps or clock it. I generally don't fool with iac parameters. I do it manually. That's just me though.
My 72 year old dad and I are doing a cam on his LQ4 and my L59 so this video is super helpful 👍
Watching some of your older videos gave me the confidence to do my own cam swap. Much props sir. Although I’m sure you’ve irritated a lotta shops lol
How did it go? Any rips and tricks?
@@moejr14 well the wooden dowel rods are a must so keep the lifters up. Loosen the radiator & flip it vertically to get the cam all the way out. I used a torch to heat the balancer up and just slipped it back on to the crank snout. Those are the main areas that I has to improvise on. Also be super careful with the cam retainer plate bolts.
Man, I own a 94 ford lightning and I put a little E303 cam in it. It's crying like a sissy at idle. My 92 5.0 loved it right off the bat and it showed results. I know the 351w is bigger than the 302 but I was just figuring it wouldn't lope as much but iv got an auto In the equation now so I'm blaming it on that. Great video and thank you for the excellent content
I always heard the foxbody computers were better at adjusting to a certain point.
When scanning did you check idle air flow percentage being added. Then copy and paste special by percent half multiply?
What software do you recommend for tuning? I build engines now but mostly old school carb stuff. Wanting to learn to tune LS engines. I saw you’re using HPTuners and I’m curious what software to get from them.
Yep the IAC isn’t happy when the idle air is way off from the stock tune.
Huge thank you I'm looking forward to doing this very soon
heres a good question for you, i did a tsp stage 3 high lift cam in my ls swap, it idles nicely in P and N but when i put it into R or D rpms jump from 700 to 1300 and sit there, for some reason throttle command jumps from 4-5% to 14%, and i have no idea how to change that in HP tuners
When I did my sloppy stage 2 cam in my stock 5.3 all I did was adjust the TB blade and drove it for 4 months and drove 6 hr round trip and the truck did amazing, never had any issues even on stock converter. never got it to a tuner before I sold it, still recommend tuning it though.
Same here I have a guy still driving his ss2 I swapped 8 months later no issues
I have a 5.7 Hemi with a racing tune on a OEM cam..drove amazing…finally had a cam failure at 130k miles do to wear and tear I believe, but I’m upgrading cam to a low lift non mds performance cam stage 1..I’m hoping the racing tune that on there already will such well with the cam upgrade until I get it custom tuned..custom tunes are like $650 🤦🏽♂️
My old LT1 ran for about a month on stock tune with the head/cam swap, and it was a challenge. The $500 for an hour tuning session was well worth it in the end.
Well said...cant believe that some put cams in and just drive the pee out of them cause they dont wanna pay...
Pay now or pay later lol
I have a similar build that’s been cammed and tuned since 2019 recently the idle is starting to get high . Iv changed the TPS sensor IAC and cleaned the throttle body and checked for vacuum leaks. Sometimes it runs fine sometimes it idles high. It’s getting hard to start when cold kind of like your video showed with a factory tune. Any ideas or help would be be appreciated.
I have been running my 212/218 .553/.553 for about 9 months without a tune, i did have to swap mufflers to a generic 2 chamber i had laying around because the straight thru design lack of back pressure would let it stall sometimes. Is it running 100%? No but it can be driven for a while until you get it tuned given you dont go too big.
This is all fine but what lift and what duration cam R we talking about. I would luv to know
did someone build your tune? or is it a premade tune from hp? could you use a handheld tuner? im trying to get a grasp before i do all this work to my truck
Whats more important for vehicle exhaust sound/tone? The exhaust headers/exhaust manifold or the camshaft?
Great job, can you share your tune to make a comparison ?
So what all does the motor have done is it just a cam and cold air intake or does it have more?
what cam is in this truck im thinking about starting to play with my 03 5.3
Do you do tunes for people or just for your self?? I live forth of Dallas.
Which tuner would I need if I install a Chopacabra cam on a bone stock 5.3L if at all? I’m also planning to leave the stock exhaust.
Work truck no AFM from factory.
This is what I needed to see. lol.. I’m upgrading from OEM with a custom race tune..to a low lift performance/non mds cam..it drove amazing with the OEM cam and racing tune so I was gonna drive it with the racing tune and the new low lift cam…I was concerned but now I’m not…the tune is aggressive so hopefully it will synch well with the cam upgrade until I get another custom tune
I've completely rebuilt a LQ9 engine from a Cadillac Escalade (along with a bigger cam/springs). I'm putting the engine and its 4L65e transmission in a 51 Ford pickup. The engine rebuild and cam isn't difficult but I do think I will need to have the ECU program adjusted for the new cam, VATS delete and deletion of the 2 downstream O2 sensors. I'm looking for someone that can tune it if I need to. Thanks for your videos. Much appreciated.
List your location that will help

Hey I have a 01 chevy and I dont have the option on hp tuners to make my small cam sound big please explain
I like know wich kit to buy to make it like you and where to buy it ! Tanks in advance
Did you put bigger or performance injectores?
and i have a 4x4 lt 07 chevy got a stage 1 btr cam after deleting that cam and all that new stuff thinking I'm Gunna need a tune no problem though but just carious if it would self-learn
Im doing a cam swap on my 05 silverado saturday, its a 110 lsa, 600/600, 216 intake 220 exhaust, ill have like 5 miles from the shop im doing it and like 3 miles to my tuner monday morning, it should be fine to make those short trips right?
Also the truck is not getting a stall at this time due to funds and time, will it be streetable?
I am still messing with my truck, cammed one engine was a disaster not cams fault. But it ran and drove. But the engine was toasted due to other failures. However, after the ECM is freshly programed it will stall and run strange for a few miles. I rebuilt a stock engine and it would stalled and ran like crap for a few miles. This spring it's new cam and off to be tuned.
Do you have a base tune I can use on my fresh lm7 5.3 build with chopacobra???
Can I use a flash tuner to tune my truck after installing a stage one cam?
I have a 92 ford flareside 5.0 with e303 cam. It's Obd1. How can I tune it. Or where can I take it. I have the rpm running at 1000 or it will idle and sometimes turn off
So why did you put a 4.3 tune back into it if it is a v8? Also I did a Texas speed stage 2 cam in my 5.3 and i have been driving it for about 5 months now without a tune and never got a flashing check engine light.
How far do you think I’ll be able to drive without a tune? I live far away from anything haha
Mine does that what do I need??? Or where do I get the tune from?
Im having this same problem with holding the gas pedal for a few seconds for my montecarlo ss to stay running, except when i press the brakes while running in a stationary position the car will cut off
Swapped mine today and it runs. Not great but it will drive to the shop.
What is your valve lift? Mine is a 595 lift
Did you do you own tuning?
was this on stock injectors?
Bo do you do tunes for people i need a tune!!
Would a Diablo tuner work to tune it
I'm loosing the crisp throttle response after a few seconds of running DBC cam swap not tuned yet no codes
I been thinking about putting a comp 280h 480 roller cam in my 5.7 vortec 350. I recently upgraded from the oem spider to the multi port fuel injection spider.
The cam works on my factory keyway. Do you think i would need a tune?
Definitely!
I’m running on a stock converter and I always have to rev it every stop light because it stalls 😂😢
What cam u running
Dumb question but could you drill a small hole or two in the butterfly to get you to point B assuming you had a junker TB sitting around?
Drilling a hole in your TB is a last resort. I have a stage 4 NA cam and I didn’t even come close to maxing out the IAC. Usually the people that need to drill a hole in their tb are those with tb that have an inadequate design for the iac and either restrict it or prevent it from fully opening.
Im looking to do a choppy cam in my lq9. Has built 4l65, long tubes, cold air. Any suggestions to make it sound like yurs. Maybe ccx a cam kit with new springs, idk. And i have a lap top. I see the hp tuner logo on yurs. Can i download that and do my own tunes. The local guy wants 550 to do a motor trsns tune. Also what do u have in yur ovd2 port. Name make model. I truly appreciate any help. I have a 03 chevy silverado ss lq9 awd
Do an in person tune...not just wot but part throttle drivability etc. The right guy it will be worth the money spent.
Plus youll know it was done right. Too many half azz take your $ tunes out there
Hey, I just put in a cam and I’m having problems idling
Where can we learn to computer tune on our own?
How does it behave as a driver? I've been thinking about cam swapping my z71 but it's my daily so I'm nervous about running into drivability issues.
Drivability is only an issue with manual transmissions, you might need a stall torque converter but other than that no issues daily driving other than increased valve train wear if you get more lift
Do you have a shop?
Getting ready to play with my lq9. I'm confident in my mechanical abilities but i know crap about tuning although I'm very tech savvy and have a degree in IT.... For some reason i never learned tuning..... Maybe it's time to pick up another skill set... Any recommended places to start learning to tune
Its like learning another language....to truly tune right huge learning curve.
Try speedtalk they have a forum just for that lots of mfrs post there. They can point you in the right directions .
Ever flash a motherboard bios? Or overclock?
If I buy hptuners, is there a place that has a tube to get you started? Like preload tunes
Yup, on the Hptuners website there’s a repository with base tunes and forums with ppl that share tunes
I'm interested in the Truck Norris Cam for better towing performance. Do you think it's realistic to be able to tune out the lopiness at idle in a 5.3? I actually don't want that.
For towing install a 6.0 or 8.1.
@@moabman6803 Riiiight, that's an entirely different level from a cam swap.
It costs 400 to 500 bucks for a cam kit. Then another 500 to 600 for a dyno tune. How much is a used 6.0? A cam will only add power above 3k rpm on a LS.
@@moabman6803 A 6.0 from the salvage yard with an unknown history is about $1200 to $1500 these days, I have to figure out how to get it, transport it, lift it, buy an engine hoist, do A LOT more work etc, etc. You should do more research on cams, you'd be surprised what they can do these days.
@@moabman6803 Nah man I'm good, a cam is the way to go for me. 👍
I'm sure it matters how intense your cam swap is correct? How moderate is your cam in comparison to stock? I have a 224/224 .600 114LSA in my LS6 and I'm hoping it idles a bit better than yours, lol.
It’s gunna idle worse but
Gonna be hella choppy
Can you add headers and an intake on an otherwise stock engine without a tune?
Would be pointless
@@jessecox4445 I am interested b/c I am LS swapping my car and needed headers for clearance. I just want to know if I need to be thinking about immediately getting a tune. I am sure a tune would optimize the parts.
Yes you can it’ll run fine a tune will get you more power though
The intake won't help you
Anyone figure out what cam?
FINALLY ANOTHER VID
Can you mess up your engine if you freshly rebuild and cam engine and keep turning it on without a tune or base tune and just let it idle ? just turning it on not driving it
If it’s not a big cam you should be okay. You can hurt the engine if it’s running to rich or running lean if your abusing it but turning on and light driving you should be good. I would recommend finding someone that knowledgeable in street tuning so your motor will run 💯 and so it can run to its full potential
Adjust the throttle cable a little tight to bump up the idle.
Thats the job if the iacv and tps on cable tb
My 03 seirra 6.0 has very many electrical issues and sounds just like yours on the factory tune and has blinking check engine it has no cam and 96000 miles
Check all of your grounds, find a reputable Auto Electric Shop
The only prob with this vid is it doesn't include the huge china throttle body most clueless owners add or the multiple broken exhaust bolts. Those exhaust leaks make the o2 readings useless so it can't self-tune.
Bonus if the owner added a china sheetmetal intake manifold. Those make it nearly impossible to start & idle on a stock tune, not to mention they remove 30-60lb-ft of power below 4000 rpm.
You can unplug the map sensor and it will idle. I have an 03 hemi do you know anybody that can tune it without changing computer
Hit up frp flyin ryan performance
Last 3 cam swaps I’ve done ran and idled fine after about 10 min learning
Good to know because Im dropping a Iron LS1 (Yes its 5.7L, bored out from a 5.3L) with a Truck Norris Cam, in a truck with a p59 pcm factory tuned for 4.8, also adding a 2600-2800 stall converter.
Truck Norris cam the best
IACV needs adjusting
I'm not a tuner so if I'm wrong please chime in...
Rather than limping your truck to a tuner, Could you just have your computer programmed at the tuner and bring it back to your truck??
A base tune from them would help to get truck on dyno more easily for fine tuning than having to hold throttle pedal and brake at same time
Where's the specs??
Sp basically, you do need a tune, but you can drive it to your tuner if needed. Got it.
Yup question tons of people have gets answered by this, ofc it is oem and vehicle line specific, so gmt800/900 will be the same but totally different from ford or stellantis.
💪💪💪💪🔥🔥🔥🔥
My man COWBOYS FAN!!!…Lets go Dallas!!!
Cool, I bought the Terminator X Max because I don't know how to tune don't own a laptop and there's not a tuner within a hundred miles, she runs lean, 14- 14.5 afr YIKES! Been driving it that way for months, that would be so cool if I could get the Brian tooley's Cam that I'm after, and it just automatically drops it down to 12. 5 bingo bingo lopity lopity waaaa- waaa- 🌪whoa Nelly🌝
I thought 14.7 where you want to be?
@@johnkfennedy7203 guys from engine Masters, they seem to shoot for 12.5 I've seen others mention it as well. They would say 14-7 is super lean.
Mine won't start
I hear with a 212/218 .550" .550" 114° LSA in a 5.3, you won't need a tune or a stall converter. Is this true
You’ll definitely need a tune or you’ll never get a power gain, afr be lean, like he said super rich at idle and it will stall on you upon stop from time to time, I have a btr stage 2 truck cam 212/218 .553/.553 111 lsa and mine doesn’t need a converter sure would help it launch better out of a dig but no doesn’t require a converter
@@jacobdewitt863 thank you for the info. I really appreciate it
@@caleblevasseur2657 absolutely 🤟🏼
@@jacobdewitt863 I have a 6.0 with that same BTR stage 2 truck cam. I haven’t finished it yet. Do you think that’s a good cam for a 6.0?
@@mirabalmedia in all honesty it’s all what you do with your truck, if you Daily and just want Sound and some pep or your trying to make a street daily then you’ll wanna stick with truck cams but if you tow with yours then best option is stage 1,2,and the new truck Norris cam from btr is on fire rn they seem to do really well and can run on factory converter but to fully answer your question yes be a great combo for a little bump in power
You won’t see the full gains of swapping a cam without tuning
What camshaft?
What’s a distributor……
I would recommend chuck norris cam with hp tuners
Bro is it state 1 2 or 3?
After camming my truck, I now have a cam sensor trouble code. Is that normal?
If its tuned and still there you need to change the sensor or your timing are not dead centered when installed
I laughed so hard at 7 grams
F***ing high on..🤣
Couple balls always helps the tuner lol
Won't get max power w o a tune. More fuel.....
Bv
$150 for a tow won't kill you lol
how much does it cost to tune it after camming it?
street tune or remote tuning usually costs around $300 but you need a way to upload it to your truck, so you need HP Tuners if you do a remote tune. The credits from HP Tuners to tune it cost $100. If you need a dyno tune, you will pay for dyno rental, the tune, and the credits. Expect about $500-600 for dyno tuning.
Black bear performance or mailordertunw
Carbureted 350 simulator😂🫡
Why not tune after a cam swap? 😂 ur pissin n the wind if u dont followers.
A tune after cam swap is pretty much always necessary. This is so you can at least drive to the tuner or Dyno
