This video makes me feel a little better. I've got a project truck going on that will be my daily driver when it's done, with a similar setup. It's an Avalance 4×4 with a 5.3 LM7 with a TSP 220R 600/600 cam on a 112 LSA, with 1 3/4" TSP LT Headers, PRC ported/polished 799 heads milled .025, a Yank 3000 stall converter, and 4.56 gears on a 6" lift with 35s. I've daily driven the truck for 8 years on the stock motor and stock gears with the lift, and I was excited to beef it up, but a little nervous that it'd hurt the drivability. This video helps.
What tune are you running? I plan on doing a btr stage 3 cam on my 5.3 with btr rods and pistons etc I’d like to keep some fuel mileage and be able to daily driving while having a good get up and go
Love how you mentioned the ac stuff and what not. Tune does have to do with it and a lot don’t know that. I didn’t know it with my first cam and ended up buying an upgraded alternator😭😭
I think it’s very hard for a cam to make a 5.3 hard to daily, especially such a small cam like the chopacabra, and then with tires that aren’t too big like 35s I feel like it makes the truck a really good daily especially cause you can drive without thinking about crappy roads
No yeah it helps it . I fucked up my stage 2 transmission. It has a built diff . I was supposed to tune it on my 35s but i never did . So the tranny fucked up . You need a transmission cooler also my guy
When I cam swap my auto cars. I always add a bad ass converter 3000 stall and up. And the cam duration is always 230s and up. That with a good tune and 411/456 gears is a blast. I never ever picked a small camshaft. Most people always want more cam and a bigger converter. 230s duration cam and a 3500 stall with 410s is where it's at.
Idk if you’ve done it already but you should do an equal length exhaust best sounding thing in the world for these trucks i wish i did it before i went turbo. It makes it sound like a corvette.
I’ve got the stage 3 v2 BTR cam in my 09 Silverado. It’s sounds great daily’s fine but it surges through the brakes bad and I suffer from the PRND big too.
4:50 I think that’s just the motor showing age in my opinion. Just about every truck I’ve ever been in that old has done that at least once. It may have nothing to do with the motor but the tune like you said but just wanted to throw that out there for ya
@@sladester2 yea I figured it was tune but just wanted to throw that out there. Now that I think about it it could’ve been a gearing issue maybe..???? Not sure lol
I never did hear what your cam rpm range is. I’ve had a carbureted truck in the past that would not hardly run with stock tc. Increased stall is mainly to improve those load dynamics cause bigger cams don’t make much low end power so allowing that to increase won’t really be something you will notice but it won’t feel so sluggish when pulling away from stop signs. Allows it to spool up a little.
Hey man u need to go put a torque converter out of a 2006 trailblazer with 4.2 in it they are only like 130.00 bucks and will bolt right in and will give u around 2700-3000 stall to help get it up in rpm and plus do 4.10 gears I'm running same set up on my 2013 5.3 and it's heads cam bolt ones and love it YOU WILL NEED NEW TUNE AFTER CONVERTER
4.44 gears would probably be better for 35s, these 4l60es already have a terrible gear ratio 4.10 is good for stock tires but on big heavy tires like this i think 4.44 is more beneficial
@isatnt that's a weird number. I think most chevy guys go with 4.10s, 4.30s, or 4.56s. Only other two I remember guys talking about are 4.88s or 5.30s. But I guess it all depends on if you've got the stock axles/rear under it.
Despite needing gears, how are you liking the same so far? Does the butt dyno notice a big power gain? It made some solid numbers for an old 5.3. I’ve been trying to sort out a cam for my z71 Tahoe. I was looking into the tsp stage 2 low lift, but this one sounds pretty wicked
My 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew cab LS Short bed did the same thing to stalling out multiple times but my truck has no catalytic converter factory header and no tune
