I UPGRADED my Oase Biomaster Pre-Filter (for less than £25) + Other Filter Tips

  • So made a mistake on the video, where i said the model number refers to the LPH, it actally refers to tank size the filter is rated for! But the point still stands 😅
    If you run an olddr model of then Oase Biomasters this cheap little pre filter upgrade might just help you out.
    I replaced the prefilter pipe to the new version that now comes as standard in all new oase biomasters, and i also replaced the sponges to the 10ppi coarse prefilter sponges which has helped with flow distrubution.
    I always talk about replacing the standard media to give it a bit more of a punch!
    I hope you find this video helpfull!

    Guys i made a mistake and I stand corrected, the model number of the filter pertains to the tank size its rated for, not the amount of litres per hour 🫣
    However they still are over rated when it comes to real life LPH, at least in my opinion.

      I have the ScaperLine90 with the BioMaster² Termo 600 filter... I replaced the blue sponges in the pre-filter with the black ones (60ppi)... instead in the large filter I removed all the sponges and put in 4 liters of Matrix and Purigen from Seachem...
      I always put the Lily pipes on the same side of the aquarium (left or right)... the important thing is to put the Lily pipe with the outflow in the back corner and the Lily pipe with the inflow in the front corner, not close together in the aquarium... here's why:
      - tall plants are in the back and need more Co2.
      - usually the substrate is higher in the back than in the front, so the "dirt" will tend to go in front of the aquarium, this is why you need to put the Lily Pipes with the inflow in front.
      - the water flow must make a complete turn of the aquarium to make the filter work at 100%.
      search on RUclips how to best position the Lily Pipes, I guarantee it makes a difference...
      I have been using the inline Co2 for several months and I have to say that I have not found it to be good because the flow drops considerably, cleaning the filter tubes with the brush becomes much more difficult, the risk of having leaks does not drive me crazy, the inline diffuser blocks if it is not properly maintained...

    It only took Oase 4.5 years to make the changes to improve flow and reduce air problems which I originally suggested in my 'Pimp My Filter' Oase 600 video.
    I'm guessing that's the 'speed of science', lol
    BTW, that tank is looking very nice behind you.

    I would like to thank you for teaching me the reason why BBA shows up, and most importantly, how to get rid of it. It's only a matter of getting N to let's say 15/20 ppm, P to 1/2 ppm and K to 10 or so. Again thank you so very much for the enlightenment, I had tried everything else, not fertilizing, no maintenance, blackout, holly water, searching online, rescaping the hole thing and no results, now I'm on the right way. Also, the tubes orientation, thank you.

    I think raising the lily pipe would be good to have more agitation on the surface

    I got the lily pipes with a skimmer add on in the inflow. I adjusted the flow on the filter so it doesn’t get sucked in and it has worked great so far. I have the 350 on my Landen 120P. Personally the 800 would probably be overkill for you considering you’re doing proper maintenance.

    Thanks. Didn’t know about the new pipe. As someone who’s used Oase for a fair few years now… I’ve got to say, the flow sucks. I often find myself questioning the product. We buy the filter to essentially strip 90% of it and fill it with our own products. I’m always quite shocked so many RUclipsrs (yourself not included) push it so hard.

    • @REscapes
      @REscapes  9 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah i think definitely from a flow perspective It's not fantastic, ive heard much better things from the likes of eheim or even fluval, but the prefilter and built-in heater are such a good feature, i really do love that about them so that makes the poor flow rate slightly more tolerable 😅

  • @alastair-r3676
    @alastair-r3676 9 месяцев назад

    I found that after cleaning the pre filter while on tilt the Oase for a few seconds, tilt it so the in/out pipe side is higher than pre filter side this flushes trapped air. I didn’t know about the pipe upgrade, thanks.

    At 05:45 in your video you say that the biomaster 250, 600, 850. Stands for how many litres per hour the pump turns over per hour.
    I'm sure this is incorrect.
    I'm sure the Biomaster 250, 350, 650, and 850 refers to the size of the tank that Oase recommended that customers use the Biomaster units for.
    Love ❤️ your new tank.

      You are correct it does mean tank size rating, I made a mistake 🫣

  • @mattphillips6714
    @mattphillips6714 9 месяцев назад

    Your tank looks great and you are definitely thinking in the right direction with flow and movement.. however what concerns me a whole bunch is complete lack of movement on the surface of your water, this is important for gas exchange and oxygenation, yes your plants will produce a lot of oxygen but at night they consume a lot so potentially your tank is becoming a risk factor. The tank could benefit from a wave maker or adjust the outtake so the flow breaks the water surface..

    • @REscapes
      @REscapes  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you 😊
      There is a eheim surface skimmer on the right hand side behind me that clears the surface and provides agitation, i used to have an inlet surface skimmer, like the glass one that had it built in to the inlet but it would always get sucked down and not work efficiently so i switched to an electric powered one, you just cant see in the video as its behind me 😊

    • @mattphillips6714
      @mattphillips6714 9 месяцев назад

      @REscapes The skimmer being sucked down.. I don't have glass I have stainless steel and yep my skimmer was forever getting stuck under the surface too, however my tank runs on FX6 and a 407 and to stop vibration from the FX6 they sit on those puzzle style mats made from some sort of styrene. I cut a slice of this off and wedged it in the resess of the skimmer where the air bubble goes to float it.. never had the issue since, if this helps..

    Hi, where did you buy the latest prefilter eccessories for Biomaster? I'm in Australia and the shops( stores) that sell Oase filters don't sell the bigger prefilter pipe with more holes and 10 ppi prefilter sponges. I even tried online shopes(stores) even ebay and amazon, but still nothing.

      @REscapes  9 месяцев назад

      Im in the UK and i got it from a Store called Riverwood Aquatics, but it is quite widely available in the UK, i would imagine if you have any aquascaping specialists or oase distrubutors in aus that they should be able to get it in for you, it could be worth emailing them.

    The 250, 600 850 relates to the size of the tank (in litres) they’re rated for. The 250 has a flow rate of 900 l/h but based on the head height of next to nothing (it’s on the box) I have the 250 on a 160 litre low tech and it’s decent when using the spray bar to spread any flow evenly but I wish I’d gone for the 600.
    I’ll be looking at the new pipe and pre filters just to get a bit more out of it, thanks!
