An Aquarium Filter Guide For Planted Tanks

  • In this quick tutorial, we talk about the aquarium filtration in the planted aquarium, discussing the importance of aquarium canister filters as one of the possible off-the-shelf solutions, the different filter types, and much more. Enriched with beautifully planted aquariums as usual.
    The question of the day though is how much is 60 x 5? Hint: we said 350 in the video. :)
    Some of you have asked about the fish at 0:22, it is Brevibora dorsiocellata.
    Seachem Matrix for the Oase Biomaster filters is no longer available.

    I got the cheapest, no-name Chinese canister filter I could find for my 40 gallon tank and it has kept trucking for three years. As long as you understand the stages of filtration (mechanical then biological then optional chemical, then back to the tank) any canister filter will work, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars.
    I just use filter floss then Seachem Matrix in my canister. Simple, cheap, and it works.

      Thanks Martin, yeah, besides being sponsored by Oase, we really like their innovation and their approach towards the hobby - I can say that here without being too nice with them "officially" 😂- nobody else is doing that currently in the market, they all kinda' sleeping - but there are many good brands that make durable and reliable filters, and we're using and selling them with success. Thanks for another great, informative video. Also, if I can chime in on the disagreement with regards to filter media placement within the canister I say this. You guys at Green Aqua do a spectacular job and are clearly very successful with all of your display tanks as is evident to all of us. Beyond that you share with us how it is done. How anyone can argue or disagree with your method considering your success is beyond me. Who can argue with success? lol....Thanks again!

    • @GreenAquaShop
      @GreenAquaShop  5 лет назад

      The hobby is full with this agreement and disagreement. And that is good as this moves the hobby. There are several old rules / habits, which may not work anymore as things changed a lot. Who else kept a 240L aquarium with 260W LED 15-30yrs ago? Well LED was not there, but a same intensity light? Not really much or no one. We need to find new path, new methods which support these conditions. There are many ways for the success, but the one we describe works for us and for many of our clients. So we're brave enough to recommends them for anyone. The goal is to minimize the maintenance and maximize the joy what a beautiful tank can give you. We always focused on the overall health.

    I don’t understand his POV on sponge. IMO it’s some of the best to house beneficial bacteria. I think this can be misleading to new hobbyist. I run sponge as well as matrix. I also run floss on top of the sponge to catch particulates before they get to the mag of matrix to help keep it clean and free of clogging the surface area.

    • @BlatentlyFakeName
      @BlatentlyFakeName 2 года назад +1

      There is way to much focus on the media. These people aren't scientists so they really don't know what they are talking about all that much. A canister full of sponges is enough, even a good internal filter is enough. Especially with plants. There is more than enough bacteria in the tank.
      The main thing is you need to keep the water moving and remove the waste and particles. A filter which is too small will clogg up quickly, not cause a shortage of bacteria. The size of the filter vs the tank is based on a calculation, the water companies do simlar for the tap water supply. But you don't really need a Oase biomaster 600 for a 80L tank, it's a waste of money.

    I've learnt something today thanks very much. It may seem technical but I think it's pretty simple when you get a grasp of it. It's given me food for thought with the setups I'm running and why one may perhaps be suffering cause of filtration and the other doing much better with hardly any maintainance (they are both internal filters)

    Thank you Green Aqua! I was truely hoping to get an information about using a bigger sized filter for my ADA 60P Aquarium. I was currently checking to use an JBL e402 external filter but you are also using an BioMaster 250 for your 60P. That was really neccessary to watch! Thank you very much for the information and in advance for the high quality content about filtration!

    • @GreenAquaShop

      Glad that you'll get a good filter, I'm sure you'll be happy with it in the long run. (We have a BioMaster 600 under one of our 60P tanks, I know it's an overkill, but the flow is not too much, and it's a perfect ecosystem in there).

      Thanks Zak, it's really nice of you to say that. Yeah, we're not much of fighters when it comes to defending certain brands, but that angle comes from our emphasis on the end result, not the makers themselves. Did I describe that clearly? 😂I hope so. We love Oase btw, and we loved it even before they started supporting this channel.

      Haha, Eheim is a good company and we use their big filters everywhere. Oase is the market-leader in the pond, and they just recently (2-3 years ago if I remember well?) started making stuff for aquariums... But they are growing fast, and come up with innovative stuff.

    Thanks to you guys I bought some Seachem Matrix and am now using it on my filters. Lol.

    • @GreenAquaShop
      @GreenAquaShop  5 лет назад +1

      Good one. We're using multiple mediums, but this seems to fit the best for our needs. Does not change the water chemistry, not clogs in the filter, not erode over time and because the grain size you do not loose major filter flow. This is not a bad thing at all :)

    • @kidgrave
      @kidgrave 5 лет назад

      Thanks for the information and I like what you guys said that it does not clog and erode. The label of the Seachem Matrix label says that the media removes nitrates. Would that be a problem in a planted tank when dosing nitrates? I got curious about that.

    • @GreenAquaShop
      @GreenAquaShop  5 лет назад

      Maybe in a larger amount this removes nitrate, but we've not experienced it. Seachem has another filter material called De*Nitrate that is the one for nitrate removal. We used it with EI fertilizer system (with high nitrates) and ADA too (low nitrates) but not experienced issues.

    Thank you, Balasz. That guide came just in time for me. I just bought my first ADA 60-P two weeks ago - because i want start to begin that hobby as an absolute aqua-noob. Since two weeks i am thinking about what a filter to buy. I changed daily my mind between ADA-ES 650 , Oase Biomaster 250 Thermo, Eheim Professional 4+ 250T. Your video gave me new perspectives to rethink about - and i am glad that none of the filters was avaible for me the every time i decided to buy one during the last two weeks. With your guide i am nearer to make a better dicision. Thank you , again \(^_^)/ greetings from germany, that helped a lot, Balasz

    • @GreenAquaShop
      @GreenAquaShop  5 лет назад

      Thanks for your feedback :) As a quick tip, we never use heaters in our aquariums. The best results came with cooler water. Under 25C. If the room temp is not too low the tank will be fine without any heating. Have fun on your next aquascaping project and we're here to help in case if you need that. 😃🐠
