I'd like to ad that in certain situations you can have air in the system formed by cavitation at the impeller. This is caused bij restrictions on the vacuumend (intake) of the filter. In my case it was an inline heater that restricted flow (JBL 1902 so 16 mm hose with a 13 mm heater). Takeaway for me was that mixing hose sizes to save money ended up costing me more in the longrun becouse the impeller had visible damage from cavitation. Hope it helps someone out there. Oh and keep up the good work guys!
@@timmyfane9680 Yes, and for that particular reason most quality filters have flow restrictors on intake and outflow. User must set both on the same position. I got this tip from Oase support when I was consulting regarding FiltoSmart 60 flow. This is another great thing about more established brands, support. Thanks to OASE UK wonderful employee Charlotte.

Yes, How to properly clean (to reuse) purigen; yesterday I read that a special chlorine is needed, and that it should not be left to dry. Therefore, I recommend a tutorial on how to properly clean purigen, Thanks!
The Green Aqua filter media configuration isn't the 'conventional' way but after trying it for a few months the results speak for themselves! My water is crystal clear and I don't have to worry about so many layers of different sponges or taking all the media out just to replace the fine filter mesh. Great thinking!

Bought my oase biomaster 600 thermo at Green Aqua 2 months ago. It is doing a Great job on my 180 liters Dutch style aquarium. Easy pre filter and the Inside is still as clean as Day 1. It is only making more noise than expected.
Usually, filters get a little noisier above 1000lph. If this is a humming noise you still can use sound isolating panels in your cabinet. If this is an air noise then with to check tubing etc to make sure no air is leaking
Thanks for the reaction. It is the Humming noise. on the moment I have my tank on a office desk with all my equipment under it. So I don't really have a Cabinet. But I am already used to the noise and it's not bothering me.

Super useful. My 20 gallon aquarium is currently rocking a cool Oase 350 thermo because of the recomendations of Green Aqua channel!! best choice I have made 👌
Hi Balazs, so so many filters out there and most of them stuffed full of foam. I prefer Green Aqua, stuffed full of really useful information about filtration. Excellent video , enough said.👏👏👏
Running the filter with aquarium water in a bucket until new scape is a wonderful idea. It was really helpful for me to rescape. I went a little overhead post scape to fill it 10% of old aquarium water, rest with the aged water.
All hail Green Aqua for this must see reference filter video!! Many thanks! I’ve been keeping aquaria (poorly) since the mid-1980’s. This old dog needs new tricks.
I have an Eheim 2211 (today called Eheim classic 150/ 2211) running since 1984 with a small tank. I am a big fan of Eheim classic filters, but today the Oase Biomasters are my first choice...!
Classics were great, probably one of the most popular filters those days. The newer canisters offer more help for cleaning and their housing is more robust too. Still many of our client uses classic series.
I have few points for this video. First of all, thank you for such extensive cover of this topic. In my aquariums I found surface skimmer useless. My filter outlets are making enought surface agitation to properly push surface scum under water. Another solution for surface scum is seachem pristine. Also, changing order of filter media in external filters to filter sponge - filter mesh - bio media - purigen, leads to better NH4 removal, according to my observations. Bio media will never be overloaded with detritus this way.
Correct. Biomedia will also remove NO3 very efficient in this order, especially at lower water speed. You can also leave out fine filter mesh to reduce NO3 removal.
Was selling some celestial pearl danios and he commented on my beautiful aqua scape and he asked me how I did it. I told him to check out your channel!
Great video thank you. I have a small Oase thermo filter on my nano tank and will definitely upgrade to a larger Oase thermo when I have more room for a larger tank. Great product and keeps the water really clear

What I’ve learned by dabbling in the reef keeping side of the hobby is that EVERY surface in the aquarium can host beneficial bacteria. Porous rocks can fill the same role as filter media, because that’s what filter media is made out of. You don’t need a ton of filter media in a canister filter to efficiently process ammonia, just enough surface area in general to host the bacteria, and enough flow to bring the ammonia to them.
Correct. I have a densely populated, planted aquarium with only coarse filter foam and Purigen against brown colour. The sand filters too. Nitrate levels are stable after I fertilize it with every water change. With high density filter media with fine filter mesh I had the constant issue of twisted plant leaves and constantly low Nitrate and iron levels. Doing this I don't need a skimmer, less fertilizer... of course, one can pump in a ton of money to fix filter errors. But that's not the elegant solution. Filter sponge has been sufficient for longer than 30 years and it will be for the next 30 years.
thanks guys, really loving the content! hope you could give us tips also for light intensity across different aquarium light brands (like best Chihiros WRGB settings ;) )
HOB filters some of them have decent space for filter media and and can match the 5x debit rule. The good ones like the Seachem products have the pump inside the aquarium thus low noise.
great video👍, whether for an aquarium 120x40 x 50 good filtration 2x Jbl cristal 1502 and 902 a total of 2400 liters per hour. all baskets except the first (prefilter) are filled with JBL SintoMec, Jbl Micromac and EHEIM bioMECH
Great video, thanks for sharing. I have heard that you should never use Vaseline on the seals as it can degrade the silicone rubber. How true this is I do not know.
I don't use any of those filters, they are just too limiting for me. I use a sump, it allows me to keep my tank clear of any equipment, it is much more versatile and it is way way easier when it comes to maintenance and cleaning. I can't have floating plants in my tank because of flow and condensation from aquarium lid but the refugium in my sump is perfect for them. People always ask how I keep my water quality so pristine and stable my first response is always, I use a sump for starters. Now don't get me wrong, I do like canister filters and I have one on one of my tanks ( a Fluval FX6). I always dread having to pull it out and cleaning it though. Yeah I am most definitely a sump guy when it comes to aquariums. Oh and I can run multiple tanks off one sump, try that with a canister filter. P.S. I also never have to struggle with priming a sump and no O-Rings to worry about.
I do have some of the filters presented. EHEIM Filters can be very silent. I also have an EDEN 501, a cheap filter but works great, and a Aquaclear 20. The classic model of Eheim is difficult to prime, even terrible. I added a double tap to get the maintenance and the suction exercises much easier. I do it using the head of the filter and looking to avoid water gets out. It works pretty good.( I discovered it after a long time of priming session hahaha). Otherwise my Eheim Experience 150 works good too. Thanks for this. Cheers guys! P.D I like your shirt Balazs. ;)
we have DIY canister filter here, its made from PVC pipe and its very popular compared to branded canister and its effective too, and we can custom power head inside the filter
I respect the Green Aqua crew. Their tanks and guidance are top notch. That said, I can’t bring myself to agree with the guidance to put fine filter mesh after the biological media. ALL mechanical media should be in front of the biological media to ensure the bio media gets the cleanest possible water. The benefit is that it keeps the pores in good bio media from clogging. This is critical to have any hope of generating anaerobic bacteria that can convert nitrates to free nitrogen (true full cycle) deep in the middle of the bio media.
It's nice of you to speak about the noise and to give advice about it, that's a big parameter when choosing a filter, brands to advertise enough on it I think. Thank you for that video, really, I've been waiting for real tips on this and now I've got them! Would you have any tips for really small aquarium? Like for 10l or 20l tops (like shrimps only or betta only)? It's a big commitment (money wise) to buy an external filter for those types of aquariums and it seems over-the-top ("flow wise"), internal filters are taking space which... well, it's small already so it's not ideal, and hang-on filter (honest opinion, I find them ugly) are too noisy for a bedroom for me... So would you know a small external filter that would do the trick? I'm always amazed by your literal bucket of green tea! xD
LOL Fanny, I love that cup. :) Anyway, I would go with an Experience filter, the smallest one, still a bit big for 10 liter, but for a 20 liter it is fine, you can hide it in the cabinet too.
First thanks a lot for the video helped me a lot , only a small question , for you which one of all filters you used is the most silent? Thanks a lot !
They are great but hardly accessible in the EU. We've been using the smaller ones for many years now. Probably the only thing you need to focus on is running them in a temperature-controlled environment. They do not like hot spaces compared to other plastic canisters where the motor is in the filter.
Great video, especially in that it covers several important filters. Do you rate aquarium spray bars or do you think lilly jet glass tubes are a better way to go. Thanks for any advice you have.
I am watching your videos with great excitement, I find them very useful and educational, I have solved many of my problems in this way, so thank you very much 🙏🙂 Now I have a question for you, I would appreciate it if you would be kind enough to answer it. In my 120*45*45 tank (eheim pro 4+600) there is eheim mech pro and fiber in the bottom basket of my filter, would you recommend using 30 ppm blue sponge instead of mech pro?
Good episode. Fan here. For the UV episode: does UV alter the state of plantfertilizer in a positive or negative way? How does UV help to keep animals healthy by lowering pathogen bacterial pressure without compromising cycling?

A very informative video ....
thanks
Thanks for watching us. :)
Great video with tones of knowledge! What is your opinion about sump filtration systems?
We love them and use them timely on custom projects. But these are not off the shelf systems
First thanks a lot for the video helped me a lot , only a small question , for you which one of all filters you used is the most silent?
Thanks a lot !
Great video thank you so much, but what about the ADA filters? I have one
No, sponges are really not for bio filtration, the filter should be filled with Eheim Substrate pro.
Green Aqua is a gift to the world
Thanks so much for the support. It means a lot!
Great Video as usual! When filling trays in canister filter, do you fill them to (or near) the top - halfway? Thanks
Good episode. Fan here. For the UV episode: does UV alter the state of plantfertilizer in a positive or negative way? How does UV help to keep animals healthy by lowering pathogen bacterial pressure without compromising cycling?
We've not found any issues with the long-term use on fertilizers.
Yup, those classic lines are workhorses allright. I have had one running over 30 years. Only problem i had were the clips.
Yeah. Sturdy things...
