  • Dr Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He is one of the world's leading scientists in the field of Near-Death Studies. He was a co-founder and President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) and Editor of the Journal of Near-Death Studies.
His research over the past four decades has focused on near-death experiences, particularly their after-effects and implications.
In this interview he talks about his experiences and the insights he gained from his work. He also talks about his book “After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond".
    Contents:
00:02:45 What triggered your interest in near-death experiences?
00:07:27 An overview about the last 40 years of research and work and the most important results
00:09:14 What profound effects have near-death experiences on people?
00:11:34 What are the cultural differences in NDEs between United States and Europe, or Asia or even early civilizations and cultures?
00:13:44 How difficult did you find it to overcome, the resistance or the lack of interest in the scientific fellow scientists, the medical world, or the public at large?
00:15:09 How difficult is it to get proof that observations of experiences, their perceptions, are actually accurate?
00:18:38 Putting up signs somewhere on the shelf so that the person in their out of body state could see the sign didn't go so well
00:20:37 About meeting diseased people who they couldn't have known that they had died
00:23:39 About the theories of how we explain near-death experiences
00:27:06 Is it true that some of the near-death experiences have happened during a state where it was fairly certain or sure that the brain couldn't have generated these experiences through normal means?
    00:29:13 Dr. Eben Alexander's case
00:33:16 Is the mind or the consciousness - the soul - separate from the physical brain?
00:37:20 What can the research in near-death experience tell us about perhaps our hopes or questions whether we actually survive physical death?
00:38:56 Suicide and fear of death
00:40:10 Have we accumulated enough knowledge to conclude actually that consciousness does survive physical death?
00:42:36 What personal worldview have you derived at? Do you believe in life after death, or how do you see it?
00:43:20 What are the most important open questions in this field of near-death research?
00:46:07 What kind of challenges do near-death experiencers face?

Now I am able to make sense of my mom's grandmother's experience. My mom told us that her grandmother died. And after 2-3 minutes she came back. She used to tell them about the white light tunnel. That's all that I can recall. After 6 months of that incident she died. She was in perfect mental health condition before and after.

To me, some of the most compelling evidence of an afterlife comes from the similar testimonies from different experiencers. In the absence of any science to explain what's happening, we have to rely upon individual testimonies. In my best judgement, most testimonies of NDE'rs here on RUclips are unmistakably sincere. For what it's worth, I have far less fear of my own death now that I've become more certain of an afterlife.

It’s DMT. Someone who astral projects will say it’s not their consciousness leaving their body it’s heightened awareness. Hence why they fail the tests carried out. NDE’s Vary so much depending on the person. Death bed visions are usually of deceased loved ones but have yet to find any of the claims Bruce Greyson has made in regards to seeing people they didn’t know had died.

It seems that not everyone that has a mystical experience needs to be near death. In 1981, when I was 19 years old, I was lying in bed trying to get to sleep because I had an early college test the next day. All of a sudden I began to feel a tingling sensation in my feet. Slowly the sensation began to go up my legs, into my torso and eventually when it reached my upper chest I saw a very bright Light. This Light then enveloped my head. I was scared and I thought something was physically off with me. But within seconds the Light began to fill me with the most amazing unconditional love. It was a feeling of love that I had never felt in my life. My eyes involuntarily just teared up and I knew that I was experiencing something from another Realm. I felt that I could not do anything wrong in my life that would cause this unconditional love to reject me, to leave me. At that moment I felt that I could be free to live my life without fear of judgment. I then asked why there are so many religions in the world and if there was One True Religion. Telepathically I received the thought that religion helped some people deal with life or feel like they had answers and that brought them comfort. However I understood that this loving Light did not care if you were affiliated with a religious sect or not. It was an individual choice. And if a person decided to one day leave organized religion then that was fine with them as well. After this amazing interaction the Light began to go down my body in the same way that it came and eventually it left out my feet. I was speechless to say the least.

I had one myself three weeks ago. I was taking a large dose of magic mushrooms alone. I was very depressed, plagued by thoughts of not death itself but the great slaughterhouse of the universe, the pitilessness of it. I was an atheist. I saw a tunnel of stars and was asked a question: do you want to die? I thought before answering - I had wanted to die, but didn’t any more, but I knew that if I said ‘no’ I would not experience whatever it was, I said yes, I had to let go, ‘my life is breaking apart into a million petals of nothingness. If I go to hell I am ready.’
I found myself bathed in a black radiant bath of subatomic particles, in the arms of ‘god’. I utterly overcome, with the sense of unity of mind, love, and forgiveness, though no language could function in this place. I saw a point of light, which I thought was a point of perfect attention. I wanted to go closer to it, but as I did, I realised that my self had returned, otherwise there would be no ‘l’ to want… at this point I felt myself being pulled back.
A month later I am greatly changed. An atheist then, now a believer, greatly committed to a spiritual life, though not sure how to integrate the experience into my old life, if that is even possible. I don’t know if I was dead or not, but it was the same experience as nde experiencers seem to have. I am utterly changed.

This shows science and spirituality can Co exist. I had an out of body experience when I was a child during heart surgery. I remember having 360 degree vision and I saw my body and knew it was my body. I saw everyone around me all at the same time. I floated to the ceiling and looked down. Then it ended. However when I woke up, the first thing I said to my mother was " why did they put me on the ceiling to do the operation". I was 8 years old and was born with congenital heart disease.
I think the verifiable aspects of the near death experience proves that mind and Brain is very different and this will in the end, have huge implications for all of mankind. I know for a fact death isn't the end.

As well Christianity with it's false, deceitful Doctrines and false God of eternal Damnation has largely contributed to that deepest Damage caused to all of Humanity by these anthropomorphic Projection of human Ego upon God, we could be much further already in our Evolution.

Slowly, but steadily material/physicalism is proven wrong. It is, without the shadow of a doubt, obsolete. When the majority of the scientific community decides to allow more spirituality into their daily lives, it will be able use the knowledge; the wisdom, the insights, experiences and intuitions they will get from spirituality to advance scientific research and reach heights we had not even conceived. I really like this man, and he appears to be a very honest & sincere individual. And I suspect or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that I hope, that he believes more than he’s letting on, but I also suspect I know why he’s not revealing his entire conclusion, and for a number of reasons that I won’t mention. But I also don’t see how it’s possible that he doesn’t see the connection that’s rather obvious. And I also think he’s in a rather awkward and yet serious situation, that he eventually will have to make a decision if he hasn’t already. and I think it’s in Hebrews 12 that in effect is saying, how do we ignore such a great salvation when we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.

For centuries human communities knew that life and death were part of the same thing. Psychics, chamanes, meicas, witches, etc. had the ability to connect with "the other world". But men with material power stepped in, created key religions to spread fear of a judging- God, and made it illegal for ordinary people to connect with other dimensions. As death does not exist, we, psychics, are still here, helping other humans to experience the love of light beings through our visions.

All those years of brilliant and open minded interaction, Dr Bryson still understandable takes a healthy scientific appproach, regarding future interpretations. Science deals ONLY in theories, and yet Eban Alexander has one experience, after a career in nerosurgery with a very sceptical apprough throughout, now knows the reality of post physical life.
Predictably of course, his colleagues "disowned him". My take on that is they woukd be concerned that would increase suicide rates as Dr Bryson referred to.
One thing this absolutely proveres is the difference between group and individual consciousness.

it could be that we are super imposing our feelings or expectations. but i actually think it may be god's way of talking to us. it is gonna make a lot more sense to be talking to a loved one in a way that makes them recognizable, as opposed to how we might actually exist in heaven. it may also be possible that we could not possibly understand the actual existence until and unless we get there, permanently.

I just can't recall her name.

That is a VERY WEIRD paradigm: If you talk about the target we set up in the room, THAT COUNTS AS SCIENTIFIC PROOF. But if you recount in detail a conversation that happened in another part of the hospital (one you could not possibly know about), while you were unconscious, THAT DOESN'T COUNT. What???????

    Really nice interview!
It's interesting that the more 'civilized' a culture is, the more difficulty men have in accepting the idea that we are More Than Our Bodies. WHY is this idea so threatening??
(15:23) ??? HOW MANY ACCOUNTS of people being 'out' (lying in their beds, unconscious), then RECOUNTING CONVERSATIONS and WHAT'S GOING ON IN ANOTHER ROOM, with specific DETAILS, will it take before you can accept the idea that we are MORE THAN OUR BODIES and that this is AUTHENTIC, NOT an hallucination and not made up??? THIS IS TIRESOME. This constant 'having to prove' ... !!! Is there some number that will satisfy White Men?? ... I am just simply at a loss for understanding WHY this needs to be proved OVER and OVER and OVER again. Seriously.

    • @razony

Some small points. There are always numerous studies cited, but the actual details of the study are never published. If they are, there are as many detractors of the studies as there are supporters. There are always stories; stories about John the 55 year old lorry driver, Sue the 32 year old nurse; Mary the mother of two. Again, they are just stories. Why do they never publish full details about these people. Why would these people object? Surely, if they have had such a wonderful experience they would be happy to share this with everyone. Lastly, every time I watch a video like this; NDE, spiritualism, conspiracy theory; the usual stuff, at the end of the video I know as little about the subject as I did at the start. No matter how long the talk. I guess the answer is in what the good doctor says near the start of the video. He has been studying NDE's for 50 years, and he is still in the dark. Something obviously happens to these people, but are we not being carried away by a surfeit of imagination?

His research team has documentation about these cases, and each of which was verified before they are added to their record. The research has been done and had to be done meticulously. Check with University of Virgina to see how to get access to these personal records.
This is a complex subject. Fifty years with a small group of scientists, they have achieved a lot with their determination, patience, open mindness and scientific attitude. Just the acknowledgement of the facts that we had long denied and contributed to mental illness, and acknowledgement of the reality that we don't truly know (which means we should not deny if we don't know) is a big step. The advance of scientific knowledge has always been built upon many individuals' work over a long long period of time combined with some breakthrough at a right time. Also to be fair, he is not in the dark. He just does not have a perfect explanation for all these phenomenons. He certainly is one of thoses pioneers to navigate through an unknown field. My high respect for him.

No need to believe. You just have to discriminate between knower and the known, object from the subject. Actually, our physical bodies are not our real selves. Body is just a dumb, mute flesh, meat, blood, bones, ever changing aggregate. How can a dumb, mute Substance be' I'. I am the subject, the experiencer, the witness, an observer. I am different from my body. I use the body for purpose.

I can help you make sense of them: there’s no need to leave your body if you are possessed by a demon (who can read minds and has supernatural abilities. Why is it so common? Because people are not being told the true gospel of simply trusting Christ and what he accomplished on the cross and by his resurrection. You cannot have a NDE if you’re saved and sealed into Christ Jesus. (The patient that saw the nurse received information from demons!)
