It seems like Drake sees D&J as the golden years but Josh sees it as a huge chunk of time when people were just mocking him for his appearance. To an extent, I feel bad for both of them. Drake can't let go of the past and Josh possibly doesn't want to relive it.

Damn, that’s the best explanation I’ve heard tbh. I would also add that they are both too passive and insecure to admit this. They, like many folks, would severely benefit from therapy. They both work in a toxic abusive environment and were both children during that time…it’s important to talk that shit out.

Sure, speaking of trauma isn't easy and requires time and therapy... but good lord, the way he's managing it is horrible. He only seems ro chase the best routes for success while also shaming on Drake. And his take on my country over the sequel pilot is the biggest BS I've heard. After watching Quiet on the Set... It seems to me Drake wanted to stick with Josh because he genuinely enjoyed being around him. It helped him escape the demons he was fighting at the time. Josh meanwhile felt like he was playing second fiddle and would never be able to get ahead and Drake was just using him. In a way he was, but for positive reasons. These two need to fix what happened between them.
I think Josh is bitter he was not the star .but he is as a huge part of the shows success. He is loving the publicity really . because without this scandal no one would be on his you tube .so many don't remember it seems .

He got that joke from the 1995 movie "Stuart Saves His Family". It was an SNL movie centered around Stuart Smalley, it bombed horribly, but it's surprisingly heartfelt and dark.

It's a shame that Josh feels that way. I mean I don't think a single kid that grew up with Drake and Josh saw him as a "fat clown" or anything like that. And it's weird that he sees it like that. Drake was the one with the "eating disorder" in the show. And in spite of being popular, the show portrayed Drake as dumb while Josh was very smart. There was no "humiliation" for either character, it was a back and forth of making fun of both in a comedy show, like it's supposed to be.
But anyway, it's clear that he carries a huge scar from whatever insults he endured at the time. He lost weight, but he did for public perception and not because of his own and healthy reasons, and has become a fake and bitter person, just like the people who treated him badly back in the day. It's beyond sad and a reflection of how brutal show business is.

@@TheJotaroKujoexactly this. I think maybe in earlier seasons Josh was more of the punching bag, but they definitely became equals later on. Drake was cool, attractive and good with girls but was also portrayed as selfish, lazy, stupid, and kind of an asshole. Josh was goofy and awkward, uncool and didn’t have much luck with girls, however he was smart, witty, sarcastic, and ended up with an actual girlfriend unlike Drake. I guess being seen as less attractive or less cool really affected Josh. I think he resents his time on drake and josh and resents drake. And everything he does now seems like it’s about public perception and his image. He seems very inauthentic.

I’ve noticed Josh has a history of being really mean-spirited towards Drake meanwhile Drake has only ever said positive things about Josh even when he didn’t get invited to the wedding he never attached Josh’s character or made jokes about his career the way Josh has done to Drake. I honestly don’t like either of them, Josh for how two-faced and disingenuous he is, and Drake for his sexual misdemeanours.

Unfortunately, that's often what happens when ppl get famous at a young age. They get a big head about it and never quite develop the necessary humility to progress.
I think it’s a great idea for the reboot to be reversed roles as adults. The unpopular kid is now a successful adult and the popular kid is struggling as an adult in real life. Idk about the idea Josh pitched, but there def could have been something.

I feel for Josh because Drake reminds me of a obsessed friend I had who loved being around me, but they were super cruel. I actually wonder how Drake treated Josh behind the scenes.
Drake likely dismissed him often bc Josh used to be the "overweight" stereotype while Drake was the "hot" stereotype. Also they were kids and I'm sure egos were involved and bc Drake was the "hot" one, he likely mistreated Josh, even if it was just subconsciously. However Josh now has quite the ego himself and let's not forget, he eagerly participated in SEVERAL racist, sexist, problematic videos with David Dobrik.
Of course Drake is a disgusting predator who has preyed on multiple MINORS and so I'm not defending Drake here. In my eyes, Drake is disgusting and Josh has the ego the size of someone like Christian Bale would have... despite not having even half the acting under his belt. Also in this video, Josh made a racist/stereotypical script about Mexico for the "Josh & Drake" reboot. Drake is worse but I'm not a fan of Josh either.

Josh feels very arrogant. I’m not sure I would say narcissistic, but definitely leaning toward it. Even the way he spoke as a child. Not that it’s entirely his fault. It sounds like he essentially had to grow up early and be his own father since he lived with his single mother. Just the way little Josh describes “perfecting” what other people try or do, sounds so arrogant. Pile that with how he wrote himself to be successful but Drake to be a failure in the “reboot” really shows his colors.
That’s not to say Drake was in the right for not respecting Josh’s wishes to be more than a simple sidekick, but Josh clearly has a problem with pride and self-idolization. There’s a healthy level of drive, but the fact that he lacks humbleness in the way he speaks and presents himself, even pursuing the spotlight so much that he has to keep jumping from fad to fad and social media to social media, makes him less than honorable.

I think it's a really interesting dynamic. To me, as someone who never watched the show and is looking at this from an unbiased perspective, it seems to me that Josh is a deeply angry person who was unwilling to confront that anger throughout his early years. This, at least to what I can see, comes from him being typecast as a child actor as the "Fat funny friend" and placed beside Drake who was typecast as "The handsome rebel." In real life, it looks to me that Drake didn't realize how bad the typecasting was, and never understood why Josh hated the show so much. And because he never realized it, Drake pursued a friendship with Josh after the show ended - which acted as a constant reminder of a time in Josh's life that he despised.
That being said, Josh's choice to write a reboot script at all seems like a backhanded response to the Fan's constant longing to see the duo get back together. It was like he said, "Okay fine, you want a script, let me write you a script," and then began to bash his former co-star's life and fans from every angle imaginable. The choice to write Mexican stereotypes is incredibly revealing to Josh's character as a person, and while I don't agree with Drake's constant pursuit of Josh, I think Drake was being entirely naive. I think he saw them as friends, while Josh didn't - and Josh's resentment denied him the ability to be gracious enough towards Drake to tell him the truth and have them both move on. I also have to add that Drake's allegations are interesting as well - since he doesn't come across as someone who is violent, just someone who doesn't know where the line is with people.

I never watched the show either and my impression is that Josh, as an adult, was very passive aggressive about his anger towards the show and Drake. Instead of letting Drake know he'd out-grown their friendship, he backhanded Drake with an culturally insensitive script that made fun of Drake in a very mean-spirited way and basically gave a big F-U to all his previous fans.
At the same time, Drake is probably one of the most un-self-aware person I've ever seen. I forgot to write down the time stamps but seems like anytime he's interviewed about Josh after the show ended and Josh even had a smidgen of success, Drake looks positively green with envy. It's almost like he's vibing "Well, I was the good looking one. My career should have taken off more than his." But how could he have not known that being the "funny fat kid" would not be something Josh would want to be remembered for, or that the stereotype was hurtful to him? That he wouldn't want to be in Drake's shadow for the rest of his career? That maybe, just maybe, after you hit your twenties you might outgrow the friends you had when you were a teenager?
@@misshoneei63I would say both of them have this experience. Even at Josh's wedding, people were asking only about where Drake was. That must suck, since Josh comes across as very agressive and negative about his past. Which is partially understandable. Typecasting can be hurtful. But because Josh is so bad at communicating - I find it hard to see him as a serious adult. I don't see him as an actor now, whilst I do see Drake as a performer.
As much as Josh appears to be a nice guy, it does seem like all the social media training has gone to his head. Like every interaction is a calculated step in his career. Drake is overly sentimental and untruthful as well but both of them give me a phony vibe, tbh.

Josh seems to be doing very well for himself. It is incredible how talented he was: at the young age of 10. With standup comedy no less.

Yes, but he needs to work through his own feelings of feeling 'lesser than' because he was the bud of the joke. He thinks that made him 'lesser than' as if everyone couldn't tell that this was an act and that the act needed somebody to be the protagonist.
My smartest friends are also the wackiest and self-depreciative-funniest, their humor is a sign of intelligence. He really needs to separate his feelings towards Drake and that feeling of 'lesser than'.

I honestly thought Drake was being unfairly labeled the villain in the whole situation due to Josh's online presence and success and with the legal issues with Drake. I think Josh has deep embedded anger towards Drake from his experience during the Drake & Josh era as it was suggested in the end of the video. I swear I'll miss them.

Throughout this entire video, you can really see how one sided everything is, even today. The sad look on Drake's face when he says Josh is always busy, but he'll be ready for a reunion whenever. The fact that he had a podcast called "Drake and Janet," completely copying the font and stylization of the original show's logo, even the Josh impersonator at the end of the Latino TV show. It reminds me of the episode of Drake and Josh, "Josh Is Done." Throughout the whole episode you see how Drake takes Josh for granted and is completely irresponsible, and Josh finally has enough. At the end of it all Drake finally admits what all of us I think knew all along: Drake needed Josh more than Josh ever would need Drake.

I agree completely. I think Josh has harbored some ill feelings toward Drake, but never actually communicated to Drake how he felt. So of course Drake thinks they're cool because he doesn't know that Josh has secretly hated him all this time. I also think Josh didn't want to have his name connected to Drake's forever and he wanted to do his own thing.

The dynamic between Drake Bell and Josh Peck is intriguing. Drake clearly viewed Josh as a close friend, a bro. However, Josh does not seem to feel the way Drake did about him. When you become so close with a friend overtime. And when a said friend is not appreciating or thinking of you the same way it hurts.
I have a friend name Jacob, and we met in 5th Grade. However during COVID we did not talk for an entire year. What I can say, is that we still remain friends, even though we do not regularly keep in touch with each other. I do wonder though, if Jacob has ever felt the same way about our friendship.

I've watched several videos regarding the history of Drake and Josh, but I think Drake couldn't move on from D&J BUT also genuinely loved his relationship with Josh. The thing is, Josh felt like he probably lived his whole childhood in Drake's shadow, which is why he downplays his friendship with Drake and whatnot. Both Drake & Josh have... Interesting egos. I feel bad for both of them to be honest, but obviously not everything can be like how it is on screen. It's a shame because their on-screen chemistry was very, very good, even in the random vlogs or videos from way after the show ended.
Either way, how Drake ended up is genuinely heartbreaking and gross. So sad for the victims.

I think Drake sees D&J as his biggest success, his claim to fame and what put him on the map. Josh sees it as a time when he was made fun of and mocked and he probably gets frustrated that that's what he's known by.

He really is, and 45:55 you literally see the D&J sign but they just replaced Josh with Janet. I do feel bad for Drake’s perceived friendship with Josh, I think he is genuinely hurt. With that being said though, I don’t think Drake can let go of this relationship, he does have pride in his work but I think he is jealous of Josh.

We don't know how close exactly they were, but Drake and Josh have both taken plenty of photos hanging out in the early 2010s years after their original show ended.

They have a weird relationship (even before the actual criminal activity situation). But Josh obviously sees this as an old coworker or childhood friend from back home that you enjoyed but have moved on from. And Drake very much has the door open to rekindle the relationship. Neither are wrong but it's a tough situation to be in.

In the end, both of them seem to be relatively unpleasant. One is far too focused on recreating his past, while the other was far too focused on redefining his past. In the end, it’s the fans who lose.
The fans will always have the show. For me, it's totally ok for them if they want to move on with their lives, they don't have to be best buddies forever just because they were costars when kids and have to please these fans for the rest of their lives. It's ok for them to grow out of it
What I see here is, a guy who always felt like he was in the shadow of his counter part. I also see another guy who understood, that the relationship he had with his counterpart made him extremely successful. Neither of those guys could let that go. As someone who was, and still am, an extreme fan of drake and josh and will still watch the show well into their 20s I understand the mentality behind both parties. Josh was always the butt-end of the joke, and felt like drake was always taken more seriously as a talent. Drake knows and understands that the chemistry between the 2 brought him great success. Drake is holding onto nostalgia while Josh is fighting to keep the past in the past.
Although Drake is not a victim, I feel like everyone in these comments is just skimming over the Mexican stereotypes in the script that Josh wrote. My jaw dropped at every line that was read. Josh is not an angel by any means, I mean he was besties with David Dobrik of all people.

I don't think that's the case though. I think there actually may have been a bond there but jealousy got in the way. Josh wanted to distance himself from the chubby "loser" kid he felt he was, the supportive role to Drake. Drake reminded him of a past self he wished to truly forget.
I think Drake not being invited to Josh’s wedding was a clear sign that Josh did not consider him to be close friend. Drake can feel sad about that, sure, but the fact that he called him out on Twitter for it and ruined the day for Josh & his wedding is not excusable, and reveals the crappy kind of person Drake is.

I Don’t think it’s about when he peaked & can’t let it go. I think it’s about the very hard realization that the fond memories & really good times he cherished with someone seemed to not be that important to the other person. This is my take but, I feel like Drake unconsciously decided very early on that that kid was gonna be his best friend for the rest of his life. Growing up together, being each other’s man’s of honor at their future weddings, the godfather’s to their future children, partners along the ride of life & he really cherished the bond they had while Josh, in a very valid way, probably never thought of the friendship to be as meaningful as Drake saw it in his mind. Like, maybe Josh viewed him more as really just a coworker, he had really good chemistry with, someone you come across in your life and were good acquaintances for a couple of years and that’s it. Maybe he had friends he had deeper connections with than the one he had with Drake but maybe to Drake he WAS the friend he had a deeper connection with. Sometimes you feel like you’re on the same page with someone but you’re not & for some people that’s really hard grasp & let go of the fact that the friendship you cherish so much & think is so special, is something that didn’t mean that much to the other person. To him it’s like a 10 year friendship down the drain, it’s understandable he’d be so affected by it.

It's obvious that he was against the reboot because he was in fact a relatively successful musician in Mexico and the script was a total parody of his real life and ridiculing his fan base. It really sounded like Josh was mocking Drake's career. Why else would he want him to play a failed musician and include all of these completely derogatory elements concerning Mexicans and Mexico, when, like Drake said, he could've played a failed actor in NY instead. He would've been a complete idiot if he'd agreed to do it. Edit: Some people in the comments mentioned that Josh might have done that on purpose in order to deter Drake from wanting to do a reboot with him, which I can totally see. I don’t think drake is mad about being the bud of the joke for the reboot. He even said he’ll be a failed whatever Josh wants. He was upset that Josh essentially mocked and stereotyped Mexico which is a country drake really cares about. And honestly in drake and Josh both of them were the bud of the joke. Drakes character was extremely stupid while Josh’s character excelled at school and work. And Josh’s character had the happy ever after with the long term girlfriend. And in many episodes drake expressed his love for Josh.

Seeing their real-life relationship play out the way it has is heartbreaking but sometimes, you outgrow some friends and you go on different paths.
To me it seems like Drake can’t let ‘Drake & Josh’ the show go. That was the only thing he has ‘successfully done’. Always having to be a pair, but never solo or going into his own adventures. Children going through abuse are, more often than not, not fun to be around. They can be erratic, inappropriate, or turbulent. To expect Josh, as a child, to bear the weight of that relationship when full grown adults were causing all the damage is insanity. These were children. They were not responsible for each other then, and they arent now.
I agree, but the difference now is that they are adults. If Drake is expected to get help for his issues, and evaluated negatively for his poor behavior (which he is), then Josh should be held to the same standard. And it just seems like the way he's taking out his issues on Drake now is cruel and undeserved.
Drake reminds me of the friend I had that literally brings up being the main role in 6th grade every chance she could. She always said yeah you're my right hand and we'll always be best friends. I haven't seen her since high school. When I announced I was pregnant 4 years ago she bit my head off for not telling her first. Some of these responses are sad. I don't like to think I'm that toxic friend but even after high school is over I still like keeping in touch with my pals. Sometimes I even get sad cuz I'm the only one checking up but thats who I am. I can see why Josh wanted to switch rolls tho but it kinda sucks he did it that way. It really is unfortunate how everything unfolded between the two. Drake and Josh’s on-screen chemistry was honestly incredible and always fun to watch. It’s pretty clear to see that Drake has a “peaked in high school” vibe to him where he really couldn’t move on from his time on Nickelodeon which led to him eventually depending on Josh and became the root for a lot of his controversies and eventual downfall. I don’t think Josh is innocent either, where in a lot of cases Josh comes off as disingenuous. I genuinely think that Drake wanted to maintain a strong friendship with him after the show ended but I definitely understand why he wants to distance himself from the show due to the trauma he experienced while he was on the show as well as distance himself from Drake later on with all of his issues and drama. It would be nice to see them reconcile but it seems pretty unlikely now. It’s pretty clear that their egos will get in the way of that happening where Drake plays the innocent card and likes to think that it’s still 2006, while Josh will continue to downplay his friendship with Drake and history on Nickelodeon while he proceeds to be on the iCarly reboot which I think is a subliminal diss towards Drake with the D&J reboot falling through. I think Drake hid who he really was on camera and Josh knew the real him. It’s interesting, when I was younger I thought Drake wanted to distance himself from Josh to be taken seriously as a musician but after all the interviews it seems like Josh was the one distancing himself. They have such good chemistry together- what a shame that they couldn’t keep up their comedic duo. I mean Ben Still and Owen Wilson team up a lot, and so does Adam Sandler and Rob Snider. They could have kept it up.

Sadly, he was typecasted for so long and it is probably very difficult to break out of that. Josh mentions someone like Zendaya who has been very strategic of what roles she takes, never playing the same type of characters. Her character on Disney also was not a common archetype that is hard to get out of. She was a dancer which is pretty transferable in roles. Someone like JLO was able to break out of the dancer role and get into acting too.

I relate to both of them so much. Sometimes we have a soft spot for people who don't even like us. And sometimes those people have their own situation going on and just want to move on. The people we love aren't ours. 😢.
The whole wedding situation just seemed so irrelevant. I understood that it’s been several years without being by each others side, but if you aren’t close anymore then you aren’t close. Josh not wanting to invite Drake to the wedding because of their relationship being separated by time is fine! They split apart, it happens. It felt like a overreaction to something really simple, idk.

Yeah when that happened, so many people were upset, and I was talking about it with some people and I asked, "Well are they even still close?" Like if they had still been hanging together all the time, I would've understood Drake. But y'all haven't talked or hung out in years. I had friends I was close too, but now We're just social media buddies. If I saw that one of them got married, I'd just be like, "so happy for you old chum."
It absolutely was. Obviously you’re going to feel some type a way when you find out your relationship wasn’t as close as you thought but that’s not something you air out on a huge platform!

It's that Josh continued to let Drake think everything was cool between them and that they were still pals.
And then he suddenly announces his wedding the day of and it's revealed he not only didn't invite Drake, but he never even told Drake about it.
Yeah drake overreacted he deleted the tweets because he realized it was silly. He probably thought he was having a huge wedding that everyone but him was invited to.
I cant help but think Josh was bitter about how he was portrayed by Nickelodeon and is taking it out on Drake.

He's taking it out on Drake for not letting him let go. In all of these instances and interviews he lowkey makes Josh look like the bad guy who hates the public bc he doesn't want to do the show again, when he has every right to it. Drake was the one who ruined his wedding days by making ppl online get mad at Josh for not inviting him when he... didn't have to??? It's been clear that for Josh they were not super tight and barely speak to e/o, but Drake is so attached to what they did together that he keeps on publicly punishing Josh for not wanting the same things as him, for not having the same fond memories of those times.

Drake genuinely cares. The fact that he said it’s not gonna be the same thing as every other reboot at the time. “It’s not us in college” or like “fuller house” the fact that he said that directly, makes me genuinely think this would’ve been a successful project.
There is so much demand for it and so many fans are open to any kind of continuation that it would have been difficult to make it a flop or a disappointment. That's why Josh's alleged script has shocked people to their core.

Drake comparing himself to Dean Martin and John Lennon is absolutely hilarious to me!! Like sir, you think HIGHLY of yourself! Also, interesting that they both turned out not to be the morally upright person people thought them to be.
Interesting also that both of those men were closet-case bisexuals, and that one mistreated his female partners.

i was obsessed with the show and personally always preferred josh, he was/is super talented, never seen old videos as I was a toddler during the Amanda show but from the start wow he always had the talent. also love your videos!
It was one of my favorites at the time and even just the way the character Drake behaved (especially early on) had no redeeming qualities. Character Drake was one note and, even when he did change, it was more just "oh yeah, I should be a decent human." It's like they gave him a simple character because he couldn't hand any more - not saying that's what happened, it's just how it felt to me. Like we get it, he's self-absorbed and and only cares about seeing hot girls, it was such a worn out trope even back then.
Character Josh was both funnier and far more sympathetic; his character arc from oblivious/doormat into a person confidence and refusal to allow certain things, like when he is standing up for him more and holding his boundaries better... That's a real world kind of arc, far deeper of a role. Even with that goofy comedy, he made character Josh real.
I dunno, I just think it emphasizes Josh's skill as an actor. I know he was typecast as the "funny fat friend" but in that show, he did have a deeper character behind that than those roles typically have (especially in sitcoms).

Really great video! There's been a lot of manipulation on each side of the argument (Drake's side and Josh's side) trying to turn the narrative in their favor, and I think you did an amazing job at summing it all up, without forgetting any detail.
Personally, I don't really believe Josh has resentment toward Drake. I think he really was trying to distance himself from him as fast as possible, following all of the abuse allegations that came up, and exaggerated the whole 'we were never close' thing. Both of them seem very disingenuous to me, and I think we'll just never know the full truth about this. I used to be a big fan of the show, but now I don't have a lot of love left for either of them after what happened. It's kind of sad.
If anything, I'm just glad Miranda Cosgrove was not caught in the crossfire and very smartly avoided making any comment on it. Good for her, good for her!

Weird how invested and fascinated everybody is with this relationship. We all feel like this matters, like it's a part of us and we want to know every detail and how to fix it, even though it's a sad private story between two men none of us know.

ok… so post quiet on set it just seems like drake used the show to escape what he was dealing with personally, so of course the people who gave him more normal moments would be something he would want to constantly relive given what had happened only months before :(

The tweets Drake made about Josh’s wedding were so petty. You can invite whomever you want to your wedding. I hate when people feel entitled to you.
If you are so close to that person, it is absolutely an insult not to be invited to such an important event. As it turns out, they weren’t, so it didn’t matter.
You have to recognize that it will send a message.
Two of my high school friends got married. We aren't as close as we were back then, but we do see eachother, and I thought we were good friends. But it seems I don't matter to them as much as they do to me. They had other friends there, but not me. Ok, well at least I know where I stand. I wouldn't make that public though. That's stupid.
Drake's tweets came across as suss and jilted to me, and to a lot of other commenters. Most straight male friends would not be that pressed.
I have a few close friends, but I also KNOW we are close enough that I'd likely be invited to the wedding (unless it's family only). If we haven't spoken in 3 years- then yes I won't be all the surprised if I'm not invited to their wedding. Also weddings are boring so the less I go to- the better. 🤣
@@LxstinNeverlandwell it just hurts to realise your best friends from high school seem to no longer want you around. I would have invited those two even if we hadn't spoken in 10 years. I just find it very difficult to talk with anyone now days.
