Omg I turned 13 in 2006, and so I was only 4 years younger than Vanessa. We all basically grew up together. I remember being devastated by how fixated the media was on the exploitation of young children, specifically girls. I was a victim of SA at 15 and I remember how much I was blamed for the actions of a 19 year old. There was very little - if any - support for us and it's so unfortunate that these victims are forced to apologize for the actions of their oppressors. It's abysmal.

The other thing that gets me is the fact that they accused her of taking the photos in recent time. I’m talking about the first time the photos got out. When in reality, they were too dumb to look into WHEN the photos were actually taken. And when someone actually did, it turned out to be when she was still a minor 😂 so it makes them judging her for it all the more fucked up. I mean you’re literally shaming a CHILD. I honestly think the reason they shamed her for it so harshly without taking into account the fact that not only was she a minor when the photos were taken, but they were also LEAKED, is because of the ignorance surrounding how the internet works back then. It was still very new in 2007 and was just starting to become mainstream. I don’t think people knew it was possible for images to be stolen and used for exploitation purposes. They thought she posted or sent them somewhere for everyone to look at it. Personally, I don’t think it was ever anyone’s business what she chose to do with her own body, ESPECIALLY when you take into consideration that she was a minor. The real issue here was always the fact that someone wanted to exploit her on purpose. And these idiots from the 2000s were way too blind and ignorant to see that.

When you're younger all you can say is ''they're bad and rude to her even it's not her fault. it's her private''. People own Vanessa a huge apology. It was a nightmare being her fan during that time, not because we were listening absurd things about her everywhere, but we saw how much she was suffering. I remember checking forums and websites every week and there she was going to therapy again. Secutiry guards, never alone, no smiles, no usual happy dances... Nothing. She was a puppy. It was consuming her and we were just watching it. And all this while WE were also growing up, it was a mess and they handle it very poorly.

It's "wrong" because she was underage. I think a lot of people are confused about how the law works but legally speaking she could have gotten into a lot of trouble if she wasn't famous.
Even though they were pictures she took of herself, she was still guilty of distributing child p0rn0graphy because she herself was legally a child at the time. If the person is underage then it is illegal to take and distribute whether they consent to it being taken or not.
I think sending nudes has become so common that people don't think much of it but it's techniquely illegal to do if you're a minor doing it. In my own opinion, I just think it's a foolish thing to do period even as an adult. Anyone can see that and revenge p0rn is a very real thing. Actions have consequences.

We should all be ashamed as a society for how we treated during this time. I love how so many people said there was no longer a need for feminism or activism during this time. All of this victim blaming and slut shaming literally makes me sick. I forget how bad it sucked being a teenage girl during this time period. It’s still harder but at least people aren’t usually this brazen with their sexism now and we’re a little bit better educated.

@@whatsupimlouie4670 a lot has changed. Just because victim blaming hasn't magically disappeared, that doesn't mean that it's as mainstream and as acceptable as it was back then. Also, at least revenge porn is now illegal. It wasn't back then. Just because we don't have a magic wand to make patriarchy disappear, it doesn't mean all the fights protesters, feminist academics and allies gave were for nothing. We fought a lot for the few changes to come, we fought a lot for revenge porn to be considered a crime. By not recognizing the change, you basically minimize the fight and effort women gave for change. Which doesn't mean everything is perfect or that we don't need to fight for more rights.

I have never been this disturbed watching a documentary before. Seeing how vicious and ruthless the media as well the general public can be and to the extent of promoting 'victim shaming'. I feel so proud of Vanessa and Miley and other girls for standing up to themselves and not letting these people bring them down. Proving them all wrong with their successes. Hearing about it is traumatizing and I cannot even imagine how hard it must have been for them at the time. But they survived all these cruel unfair scrutinies. I pray...

I'll never forget growing up with all of this going on.. my mom trying to tell me to stop watching and listing to Vanessa, Hillary, Miley.. & honestly most of the Disney stars and being so confused... reading the popstar magazines w/ them talking about all the nice things about them but then seeing the bad headlines coming in on the tv. Times were so different back then.. but in the end these strong women sure helped changed the industry and I really hope they know that.
