- I often get criticized for putting my dogs on a treadmill. What people don't understand is just how safe it is for your dog, in fact its much safer than your dog running in the park. No gopher holes, no glass, no twisted joints.. just a safe paced run under my direct supervision.
Dog treadmills can be safe for dogs of all ages from puppies to senior dogs. I've used this slat mill on my dogs for over 10 years. In this video I give you all the info you need on what to look for in a dog treadmill as well as showing you how to condition your dog to a treadmill / slat mill for the first time.

I have always felt unsure about dogs on treadmills until I saw this particular mill. The dog is doing the work by it's own power NOT forced to run by electric mills. It may be an expensive one but it is worth every penny in my opinion. Really enjoyed this when I watched it on your members site. Thank you Robert. Stunning young Mali to.
What kind of treadmill is this I bought one with wood planks and I think the planks are better
You can tell Mia loves that thing. She gets on there and says “ let me show you how it’s done guys!”
Our Mali is turning 1 next month. What a journey so far. I've never been so challenged by a dog in my life. We absolutely love him. We are fortunate that we live close to a beach so he gets to go down there every day for a bit of throwing the ball. Your videos have been and additional training resource for us. Please keep doing what you are doing.
What a cool idea for dogs who live in towns. To get safe exercise like this. Great video thank you. 🙃☕🐾❤
Great for exercise in extreme climates too - Phoenix in the summer, Minnesota in the winter etc. where pavement is too hot or too cold on their paws
Well that was fun! That doggy is so smart. Caught on so quickly.
I trained my Mali/GSD mix to trot next to me as I bike (slowly for biking but much faster than walking), he goes 30-60min depending on outside temperature and loves it, He is on job. Waaaay better than going for a walk or to Dog Park for energy release
Respect! Excellent idea for that breed
I keep game dogs and patterdale terriers and i have both carpet mill and slat mill which i use for all my dogs , its a suplement to hand walking
Yes!!! Thank you!!
Perfect timing! We're currently looking to buy one- comparing brands. Our GSD had elbow surgery and needs to slowly start getting his exercise back- would be great for PT purposes! Thanks for posting! We're leaning towards a slat mill as well!
Look into getting one that is extended , I made the mistake of buying one that was regular size. It didn’t let my dog open up his stride on the mill.
@@therealkingfrances3242 where can I get one, can you drop a link……?
@@V73usa I just looked them up they’re pretty expensive I think anywhere from like $1500-$2000 I would love to get one but don’t have that money at this time
People in the APBT community have been using these for years as a way to exercise and condition our.
American pit bull terriers for confirmation shows, hog hunting, and slat mill racing.
Slat mills are expensive, especially for quality ones like
[DogTrotter] and [Fire Paw].
Slat mills like this are investments that will last the lifetime of your dog.
When they are maintained well, they can go a very long time before any parts will need replacing.
Slat mills such as the ones I mentioned spin fast with little effort, and they make noise. It's not as easy as just buying it and putting your dog on it.
We acclimate dogs when they are young, but still not all of them like it.
If your dog is old, skittish, suffering from an injury, or has low energy,
It might not be a good option for you.
Slat mills like the
DogTrotter and Fire Paw are available in different sizes to best suit your dog.
These slat mills are designed for healthy, high-energy athletic dogs to run on.
I've seen dogs go 5 miles in 30 minutes. Some dogs can pace themselves while others go full throttle and will run themselves sick if you let them.
I recommend doing some research in order to be sure that you are getting what you want.
A good place to start is looking up
ADBA American Dog Breed Association slat mill racing and watching some videos.
If you like what you see, then try searching for any upcoming slat mill events that might be taking place in your area.
If you decide it is for you and your dog, then you can either purchase a new one, find a used one, build one yourself, or find a person who builds them.
As I had mentioned before, people in the APBT community have been using these for years, and there are people who have experience in building slat mills.
It can save you money but still deliver a quality slat mill.
This is the option that I would go with.
There are also carpet mills and E Mills.
Slat mills, carpet mills, and E Mills are all designed for different purposes.
Some other good exercise equipment to check out is the flirt pole and spring pole.
Check out
ADBA confirmation conditioned American pit bull terriers.
These are some extremely fit dogs.
@@logansilva8017 Thank you, looking @ the Dog Trotter it’s close to 4k, I grow up around APBT. Godfather bread them in the 80’s, but he built his own thought everyone did. He used an old conveyor belt from the grocery store & wrapped it with carpet and put 2 of them on an angle facing each other with a small cage in between and the dogs would run for hrs. Miss going to dog shows with him. Would have confirmation shows during the day when it’s hot and then in the evening when it got a little cooler they will have the weight pull… but I will check out that slat mill racing, sounds interesting & maybe I can find an old timer that can build me one. Thanks again for the advice 👍🏼
I have two Dog Trotter mills. My dogs LOVE them.
Dogs really love this thing
Where can I buy this treadmill??? Never seen one before with rubber slats. Please advise!!!
Good video! I never run a dog that isn't empty. Free of poop and food. I also feed within 20 mintues of the dog being cooled down. I also rub the dog down before the feed is given.
Nice,
We really needed such channel.
Thank you, Sir.
We need a Robert Cabral Mali Gym!
Big fan of the channel! Quick question, I've scoured the web looking for science backed benefits to dog exercise, only found 1 article. Every podcast or video I've found only touches on how to exercise your dog with no data sharing the actual health and behavior benefits of vigorous dog exercise. Maybe it's a topic you'd like to cover!!
Love the idea.
We have a human equivalent called a CURVED TREADMILL from brands like ASSAULT FITNESS. They’re better than electric treadmills because you’re using your body to move the thing.
Super cool
@RobertCarbralDogs Did you build or buy this mill?
Thank you for sharing this informative video.
Thank you Robert 🙏❤️
Do you have a certain slat mill brand or model you recommend? I have a Siberian Husky. I’m looking into getting one of these while while I’m recovering from ankle surgery. My dog is use to running beside me daily on my bike.
yes, Dogtrotter!
Is there a place or link to source the rubber to make those slats?
Which brand of mill are you using here?
But how does the dog stop running full tilt with the mill going
when they stop, the mill stops
I just use mine. Works fine. She walks an hour a day with a day off now and then.
Any suggestions for a dog who is comfortable on the slat mill but won't walk or trot without being lured? I don't feel like luring is the right solution indefinitely.
That’s so awesome!
What about an active overweight German Shepard?
Her 1 - 2 mile walks with my mom and me cutting down her raw diet isnt enough and I wanted to introduce the treadmill. How many minutes? In SoFlo (South Florida).
where can i find this product?
Just started watching your channel and have really been enjoying it.
I have an 8 months old Cane corso
It does all what a dog could do wrong from pulling me all over to not listening. I have been struggling alot with it. Wondering if you could help🙏
He will love the lessons.
@@RobertCabralDogs
Sorry but I don't understand
@nkemngongmodex3272 Sounds like you got a breed that is not for novice owners, you have a liability till you get both of you some training.....
It'd be awesome if you could design one for water therapy. Ive been trying find a diy water treadmill to build for my dog with hip issues.
Sadly water treadmills are tens of thousands of dollars
@Robert Cabral
I noticed the dog got carried away and go very fast. Almost with no control over the speed of the treadmill. Isn't it a bit dangerous? Can the dog stop without the treadmill keep moving?
Yes he says that at the beginning of the video
He literally explained how it worked at the beginning of the video.... it's ONLY powered by the dog. Nothing else. When the dog stops, the treadmill stops, when the dog slows down, treadmill slows down. There's no force.
@robertcabraldogs what brand is your slat mill?
Interesting video. Could you please send info on the brand and how to purchase?? Thanks. Also really cute puppy!

Where is this Slate mill from?
Dog Trotter USA. I have two and my dogs LOVE them.
Where is this treadmill available to purchase?
Where can I buy one?
Thank you
If you walked next to the slat mill at dogs pace would this be a good training aid for the heal
What mill brand are you using in the video?
DogTrotter
What brand is this mill? I love it has give for the dogs paws. I'm very interested.
Dogtrotter USA
What brand slat mill is that and where do I purchase
I have a jogger dog which I love there a few rules you follow for example I never leave a dog alone on the jogger dog I always keep my slow jogging pace never had a full run ever sometimes even just a walk depending on where he’s doing most of his exercising exercising I’ll gradually slowing down slowing down slowing down he loves to run I see you wanna run in tears right and runs right up to the drag dog he loves it there’s no danger you just don’t leave the dog alone and keep the switch right in your hand and stopped right away if you need to be
What brand is this slatmill? Or we’re can you get it?
Another type of mill, is the carpetmill. The resistance is a little harder. This is a favorite, amongst bulldog type (pitbull, bully, staffy American bulldog, bandogs). There's plenty if videos with DIY carpetmills.
why are carpetmill's better for a bulldog types? Is it because the resistance is a little harder?
What treadmill brand is this?
Do they know they can stop?
Good video brother
I used to have a mouse with a wheel. It wasn't tied in or forced to. It went on when it wanted and stopped when it wanted. Sometimes after a few seconds, sometimes for a long time. I don't think YOU should be deciding that unless it is YOU are on it.
What brand is this mill? Thank you.
Diregard, I see it in the comments. Thank you! Great vid Great review!
Sir, where can i buy the treadmill?
Dogtrotter USA
tnx!@@LUCKYSOB
Hi, Robert! Can you tell me where you acquired your slatmill, please? Love your content!
DogTrotter
Where can I find this mill can you comment the link
Whats the name of that mill?
Does it fit within apartments?
I think people have a negative association with dog “Teadmills” because dog fighters often use them.
Same as saying anyone that wants to be in shape wants to be a fighter. People assume way too much these days.
what cheese do you use for training?
A trainer once said I should put my dog on the treadmill (our winters can be long here). It worked a few times, but once (at like 1.5 or 2 speed) he barfed. I felt so bad
Who is the maker of that slat mill?
What brand is this slat mill?
Dogtrotter USA
I wish I could afford one of those mills ...
You might be able to find a used one or find someone who makes them.
I've seen people online offering to make them, and if you or someone you know is able to build it, you can get the blueprints online.
?????? I was so waiting to see you do a video like this. I watch the video again you told us about the name of the harness but I’d like to know the name or manufacture of that machine because the ones I find off of RUclips are from Europe and are too expensive for my budget at this point in time.
Thank you from Laura and Dexter Bob a Mal/lab mix 🐾🐾🐾
dogtrotter
Thank you
I have heard that rubber Mills like the one in this video are better for the dogs joints, but then I was told timber is better because the flex of the rubber means that if they stop suddenly they can catch and break their toe…. Has anyone used both and can comment on this?
What is a quality slat mil brand?
Dog trotter
How much are they
Do you have any of them for sale
You use the harness because you saw it like that on old photos. Harness is by no mean safer than the collar.
Other than a fabulous video all around, your hair cut (loofah 😂) literally shaved years off your face. Awesome video.
Thanks 😅
All of my dogs have loved treadmiills. Here is my border collie “Agent Jack Bower” doing it while he watches TV. He does half and hour of a program that goes fast and slow, and goes up and down. When he gets anxiety (from fireworks or neighbors shooting, he goes and jumps on it and waits for us to turn it on. He regulates his own feel good chemicals with it. My dogs are never tied to it and can stop at any time.
ruclips.net/video/Ss0Wm0O7WXg/видео.html
It’s private….
To bad that they are rather expensive, i would rather just walk with my dogs and let them run where they can.
If you are getting criticized is because people do not understand jack squat about mills built for dogs and they know nothing energy that working dogs need to expend.
Don’t be in a hurry 10 minutes at a slow speed move it up by 20 seconds a day why is everybody in such a hurry in a year you’ll be up to 30 or 35 minutes 40 minutes at a nice job do you want the dog in shape he’ll run plenty on the grass and in training this is just to maintain his fitness level not to have them draw like a bad out of hell I met the dog Nina gets caught in something but let’s say he trips or collapses or falls he’s in trouble I’ve been using a jag dog for 25 years never had a problem but then I never let my dog alone either we train all day and we end up with about a half an hour ultimately on the jog a dog a nice slow run And then let them slow down gradually let them cool off and then take them off and walk them around for a while and you’re right and limit their water food intake if you walk around for a while bond with them brush them out put them away
How you not going to mention the slatmill company or model after praising it? Thats rather unfair to the company despite them producing a great product.
You realize if you were that careful with your dogs when you threw the ball for him when they never know where there’s a whole stick of rock in the ground I still don’t understand why trainers use Kong toys it bounce every which way the dog is going full speed and it bounces to the right and the dog jams on his brakes and his joints in his elbows or whatever just jam right through and is terrible on the joints so if you want to make sure nothing gets caught in there how many times does your daughter and not one of my daughters car now broken nail came back bleeding because he stepped on a little something you’re gonna make outside and see if it’s out jogger
It a Slat Mill, not a treadmill....
Or just let them run on a few acres
Just don’t leave the dog alone if people want something on this so lazy they just want to put the dog on a walk away for an hour and come back that’s stupid I’m not saying you are but I don’t think you do that in summer does do that and it’s a self motivating self moving jog jog or how do they know the dog doesn’t stop as soon as you leave the room well not as soon
