  • @Neebio

    Alec, while the runout you ended up with on the nylon wheels is probably fine for a dog treadmill, another method you could have used to turn them down would be to mount them in the lathe on an axle using the installed bearings. That way, the turned edge of the wheel would be concentric with the axle and bearings. You would need to use a lathe dog (or similar) however to keep the wheel rotating with the axle instead of spinning on the bearings.

      Thank you for the comment - what do you think about the effect of needing to straddle a belt between two convex pulleys would have? My worry is it wouldn’t be able to self centerr on the convex wheel as it’s on the edge of the belt not the center?

    • @2212db
      @2212db 2 года назад

      @@AlecSteele I'm not sure how running a belt on 2 convex pulleys would work, to be honest.
      Your current set-up should work, but will require both axles to be exactly parallel to each other and perpendicular to the frame. No pressure!
      It might be worth designing something into the build where you can adjust the axles fore and aft to compensate for any run-out on the belt.

    • @digitaIgorilla
      @digitaIgorilla 2 года назад

    For sure, 1/2" HSS bar, big chipbreaker in the topside, lots of rake top front and side and a radiussed tip. Run it through a couple of cuts on some scrap ally or nudge it with some 2000 grit to just take the fine edge off it so it doesn't bite the nylon.
    Certainly got more than enough grinding equipment to make a good go of homemade tooling.
    Or just get some cheap tips made for ally. That works too. Not great, but better than the nubby little rake on those tips!
    The right feed is tricky. You keep pushing it harder and harder, then it'll suddenly get easier and may start chipping if tool geometry is spot on. That is the perfect feed. Unfortunately, a teeny bit harder than perfect it'll chirp, then bite, then either stall the machine, break the tool or launch itself across the workshop...
    Fun stuff.
    If you want the worst stuff, either small items in Macor, or anything remotely precise in PTFE.
    Or any quantity of annealed pure copper...

    So you mentioned in your other videos about things people suggest you to make. I have these padlocks from Iran that my grandpa brought back somewhere between the 1970's-1990's and that are an incredible engineering feat and they are forged from pieces of steel. I had never seen one until my grandpa showed them to me. I own them now since he passed but I've always been so curious how they would have been made. It's hard to explain exactly but I'd love to send you videos of them so you could give it a shot replicating them.

    To keep it from warping out of square, weld the opposite vertical inside corners first. This also gives you an opportunity to double and triple check and maybe make a fine adjustment before locking it in by welding the horizontals (again, alternating welding opposite corners). Using gussets helps, weld them first.

    Little tipp for machining Nylon:
    Try to make deep cuts, the heavier chips will fall down more easier than with light chips, and if you do the last cut, you could try to stop the feed rate for a short while and turn it on again(or turn the handwheel) so that you wont have as much of the long chips that could get sucked up in the chucks.
    Or you could play around with the cutting tool, by grinding a more steep and sharp edge. that could help you aswell.
    Dont forget to speed up your feed rate. The faster you feed, the further the chips fly away from the axis. So those long chips will have a harder time getting sucked in to the chuck.
    Another tip is to use another chuck (if possible). A three jawed chuck is a bit suboptimal for cutting Nylon, you should use a collet chuck with a shaft and a screw, the fewer things you have that could suck in those chips,
    the easier it will be for you to machine it ;)

    • @Burnding
      @Burnding 2 года назад

      @@AlecSteele @Alec Steele No problem :)
      But i forgot to tell you about the danger of grinding a sharper edge / steeper cutting angle, if you take a deeper cut, you increase the force of pulling in, the material towarts the cutting edge, that means, if you dont counteract this force with a life center, there is a good chance, that your workpice, could get wripped out.
      Listen carefully to the sound of the cut, if it starts to vibrate, stop your feed and pull back.
      I've just wanted to make a disclaimer* :)

    Hi Alec, I wondered if you could give us an update on what you think of the Ryobi tools. I’ve been using Ryobi for several years now and have no complaints but I don’t use them on the same level you do and I am curious what you think. When you got them you said you were trying them out to save some money and I want to know if you think the saving is worth it.

      Great idea! Overall I love them! I smile every time I use one of those cheap green machines EXCEPT the circular saw - it sucks - the blade barely gets through a 2x4 and it is underpowered

      @philipangell8027 2 года назад

      @@AlecSteele interesting, I have the circular saw and I used it to cut my kitchen counter to size and it cut through that brilliantly. Still I think they have about 4 different ones so we might not have the same model. Thanks for the update.
