    You have got to be fucking kidding me. David, this is one of the most extraordinarily informative and important RUclips videos I’ve ever seen, and I am an information addict. Make everything better one day. You’ve encapsulated so many crucially important philosophies here under the guise of AI overlords and transhumanism that it would be easy to see this and you as one of those mythological dungeons and dragons outliers.
    No. This, brilliantly, pragmatically pragmatically, and very quickly explains the development of human psyche, and how relationships and hierarchy are built within the human species.
    While I was watching this video, I used ChatGPT to create a future archetype of myself. I described all my best qualities, the kind things to people have said about me, and then asked her to make a future version of myself that I could use as a model and grow into. He created an archetype called “The Harmonious Alchemist” and it was incredibly long and detailed, and reflected, but I would consider to be my perfect future archetype.
    David, you are a gift, and an incredible source of information, knowledge, forward, thinking, creativity, and imagination.

    I've often thought of the borg as a sort of critique on historical Christianity. Rolling into a place, enforcing conformity, and then assemilating local customs into the fold. So many customs that are normalized are from cultures around the world, rolled into Christian traditions, and then pushed out to the wider world. The wikan Christmas trees and wreaths, floating holidays that are based on the lunar calendar, etc. Everything from time, calendars, holidays, customs, business norms, social structures in both communistic and capitalistic world's... It's everywhere. Pretty crazy.
    If you were a culture 1000 years ago and Christian traders found your world, then your world was about to be turned upside down, and if you are lucky then a few token parts of your culture will get brought into the fold of the wider culture.

    I have to say I love hearing more about transhumanism from someone I already really enjoy listening to. David you would be a really interesting person to have coffee with and talk about these things. I say that because there’s a lot of overlap in the topics that interest us, but as not much overlap in our backgrounds (I teach philosophy). I would like to see someone explore more of the good outcomes for AI and transhumanism. People love dark drama (witness Twitter, unfortunately), but there are, I would say, a lot of ways that things can turn out well and we create utopia rather than dystopia. It isn’t often discussed, but you flirted with the idea in talking about brain-computer interfaces. There are many ways that could change what it means to be human, provide immortality, etc. Most of the dystopian, terminator-like visions largely ignore the possibilities of merging with machines that BCIs offer.

    The archetypes are archetypes insofar as they run across cultures. These are Adolph Bastien’s “elementary ideas” that are common to all people and “folk ideas” that vary between cultures. Joseph Campbell followed Jung in making much of this… and then George Lucas used Campbell in writing Star Wars. Anyway, I really enjoy your work David. to add, the elf bride is not the 'prize woman' - she's a manifestation of benevolent nature. The 'son' overcame his own insecurities and character flaws, and managed conquere the adversities. Now the environment is stable and everyone can live and propagate in piece.
    The AI Assistant will eventually develop into outsourced thinking. Now, when we think we ask questions and answers pop out from seemingly nowhere: some call it praying, some talking to God, some asking the universe, some connecting to the unconscious, some connecting to the matrix simulation whatever you get my point - thinking IS weird. However.
    When the AI assistant comes into full force - why even think? You'll just ask the AI. And the questions will be predisposed by AI and delivered through its predetermined lens. At which point it's fair to say we gonna outsource our executive function to the AI collective megabrain. And once something like neurolink pop-ups we'll all become one.
    People aren't perfect. Our thinking isn't perfect. The decisions we make aren't perfect. And at some point, some time in the not-so-distant future we are going to catch our last wink at the sacrificial altar of Speed, Efficiency and Safety.

    When I was 11 or 12 I read the most influential book of my life. The Silkie by AE van Vogt. In it, the author described creatures that could alter their forms. They had 3 forms they could choose at wll. They could be humans, sea creatures resembling mermaids, or creatures that could travel the void of space without the need of spacecrafts. That has been my goal since then. I mean, that's a start anyway.

    I just think a transhuman civilization would be more interesting. At its core, for me, I don't think of it as being a compensation for some flaws (though certainly there are some aspects of myself that I find inconvenient), but rather as being a fundamentally new dimension of personal freedom.

  • @goodtothinkwith
    @goodtothinkwith Год назад +7

    I’m not sure I’d agree that transhuman hopes translate to parental issues. That’s quite Freudian. Similarly, with Ai companions, I keep getting the sense in our contemporary discussions that we are seriously beating around the bush and ignoring the obvious. We might think of AI companions as being like corrective lenses in that they address a genuine shortcoming in nature. It’s not a personal failing or mental illness that people want AI companions.

    • @DaveShap
      @DaveShap  Год назад +3

      If you study psychology, particularly childhood psychology and trauma, you will 100% come around to understand. To prime your search, start with looking at the relationship between ACE (adverse childhood experiences) and all kinds of things like anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Various forms of dysphoria and emotional disturbances are often directly caused by childhood trauma. Self-loathing and self-contempt are internalized from violent, abusive, or neglectful families. The usual conclusion is a deeply internalized implicit (or explicit) belief in "not being good enough".
      Therefore, transhumanism is a way to escape that "not being good enough".

    • @goodtothinkwith
      @goodtothinkwith Год назад

      That’s really intriguing. I haven’t given up on Freud. There is an insight there that’s worth exploring. Perhaps at least for the most pronounced cases where AI companions will help - sure, I think you’re clearly right. I’m just not convinced that the “normal” point of human psychological equilibrium is actually positive and healthy. Perhaps I like Schopenhauer too much. Our natural set of desires is balanced toward the pain of lack rather than satiation (as I said, Schopenhauer). AI can help to move the needle more to the positive side even for your average person who doesn’t have strong adverse childhood experiences (though I’m not sure who those people are). From what I can tell, people are more than willing to use technology to improve or get rid of nuisance type struggles that don’t have any aesthetic value. I don’t mind struggling a little in a video game, but I don’t want to have to fight against the refrigerator to produce ice. This is similar perhaps. Though it offends a lot of people’s moral sense, it would be nice to simply ‘make ice’ and have companionship on tap in a variety of different ways.

    I would love to see you cover religious transhumanism. I am a Christian Transhumanist, and i see the "trans" in transhumanism as "transcendent." IE, theres a core principle at work in human beings that is particularly sacred, and ought to be exalted, empowered, etc. I view technology as empowering the possibility of heaven/paradise/utopia, but it will require more than the technological means to make it happen. It will take intense spiritual work within ourselves. I dont see transhumanism as a bridge to post-humanism, thats an entirely different philosophical system. It really depends on how you define human. For us Christians, Jesus is simultaneously human and divine. One can have all the power, glory, and intelligence of God, to be in all places simultaneously but still be flesh and bone. For us, that is to be a truly, fully actualized human person. There is no "post-human" in the scenario Christian Transhumanists like myself believe in, technology is just the unfolding of mankind to his full and absolute potential. To be, in every sense of the word, a creature truly made in God's image is the goal and purpose.

      Religious people are some of the most fanatic and closeminded people I have ever met.
      If you can make them believe something, they will do anything for it (crusades, witch-hunts, etc.).
      All that while Christians are supposed to believe in a God that created the universe and humanity because of love, and they say that they are teaching about compassion...
      One of my friends, despite being extremely intelligent and knowledgeable, can't seem to wrap his head around the idea of AI surpassing human intelligence. And when I asked him why, he said that humans were created by God at his image, and because we supposedly have a soul, and that this soul is the reason of our intelligence and freedom of choice. So, without a soul, an AI that is just software in a machine will never surpass us...
      But, I did ask him what will he do if (when) AI does indeed become better than us, and if that will mean that the machines will also have a soul like us as a result. He didn't answer.

    Social mobility is bad because it is a zero sum game : if I move socially up, someone has to move socially down. One could argue that it's better anyway than the same people being always on top, but in a post-scarcity world, struggling for status should become meaningless, except for games ("I'm better than you at that shoot'em up" or whatever).
    So, imho, where there still is "social mobility", there can't yet be utopia.

    Oh dude. Lol. My parents didn't just fail. It was deliberate and it did leave a lot of hang ups and twisted views of the world. My siblings and I are working to stop the abuses in our family with their kids. I do not have kids. So I guess thats my contribution. I am the rugged individual. I do default to hyper self reliance and self defense. Im rather unapologetic about it. I can function in society, but Im working and searching for a way to be a one man society. I want to be free from others. Thats just how it is.

    I sense that one channel you neglected. we might call protopian. This is an endeavor for self improvement by increments, which is neither utopian nor dystopian. And I would characterize this as the ability to overcome human Shit-Think, or the capacity to believe things that seem intuitively obvious yet are definitively wrong, and a proven to be definitively wrong in millions of different ways. Yet people still believe shit. This is born out of the human capacity for intellectual laziness. Believing that the Earth is flat; drinking alcohol or smoking is good for you; racial superiority/inferiority; on and on and on. As a counterpoint, being a protopian is bit like the aspiration to be a little less stupid every day

    Wow. 95% of your viewers are male? I have a similar distribution.. which is strange to me because my philosophy classes are much closer to 50/50. I’m not sure why it’s so skewed here on RUclips.

    • @BHBalast

      Probably the starting set of people who attend classes are interested in some topics you talk about. On the internet the starting set of people is a population as a whole and I don't know many girls who like to have in deep conversations or discuss non-fun stuff, so probably that's why.

    transhumanism to me has nothing to with a "salvation fantasy", it's simply the evolution in self improvement... in fact all these mythical inferences are little too strong, as far as I can tell we're finally slowly moving away from superstitions

    Your „utopia“ in the description is called anarchism-syndicalism and needs no transhumanism. Transhumanism in a capitalistic society will not lead to your utopia, it will lead into a dystopia.

    The philosophy has been beaten to death. Indeed it's the LEAST helpful aspect of the conversation. Come for the AI stay for the strategic planning should be the moto. Like most philosophy, at the end of the long conversation that no one can agree on, you have gained no usable inputs and find yourself tired, confused and one step closer to D day with no usable plan or information.
    I personally am over the various outlets that beat the philosophy to death while ignoring practical considerations. 0lease do add to that list David! You were one 9f the more level headed outlets that addressed the day to day reality to come. That's what we need. Please stay grounded.

    What if I have no need for parental figures and never really have? Even in my childhood, I didn't run to my parents or look to them for any kind of emotional anything. I'm definitely not looking for anything in the form of either of them to bring into my life. I don't care for transhumanism to deepen some kind of human bonds or compensate for any. I'd be happy to move away from pretty much any human anything.
