I think Donny was in Nam but he got discharged after he failed that left men face down in the muck and that's why Walter treats him like shit the whole movie.
This comment made me cry with laughter, i never concidered that. This whole see is another shut the f up donnie. His ashes get flung all over labowski and the hill.
This scene is brilliant, because it's funny and sad at the same time. And there is this honest reality vibe to it, i think something like this happens all the time in real life.
I love how Donny being a surfer is literally only mentioned in this scene. I guess it’s kind of the joke that the audience really doesn’t learn much about Donny as a character while he’s still alive.
They’re all men in their 40s who all had pretty interesting lives but are clearly in the “I already did a lot of shit so why don’t I just take it easy and drink and bowl with friends” part of their lives.
I actually cried in this scene because when the ashes go on Lebowski, Walter starts apologizing and you can see that he is genuinely sad that donny is dead.
It’s crazy how expertly the coen brothers made this scene ride the line between hilarious and sad at the same time. lol. I can’t think of a better way it could have come out.
Great how throughout the entire movie, Walter is irritated with Donny, yet is so visibly affected by his loss. TBL is a TRUE Classic on so many diff levels. Bravo!
This scene is so cathartic in showcasing the need for accepting the cruelty of life. Whenever I’m going through a shitty or unfair phase in life, I always revisit this scene and it hits me every time he says “Fuck it, let’s go bowling.” It’s hard having to accept that sometimes life just sucks. And it isn’t always gonna work out. But that’s ok. It’s ok. Fuck it. Let’s all go bowling fellow commentators.
“Come on, Dude. Hey fuck it man. Let’s go bowling” Sometimes, it’s the simple things we do with our friends that can so easily unappreciate until it’s gone, and there’s one less friend to do it with. Good gesture from Walter, even though it’s what they do all the time
lmao I love how's he more pissed off about him bringing up the war for no reason. It bothered him the whole film and now he's had it hahaha. The ashes blowing in his face too omg..I laugh so hard every time I see this scene. Soo so good.
This scene is great showcase of the Coens ability as film makers. Its able to have the dark comedy of Donnys ashes (which was held in a Krogers can) being blown right into the Dudes face, but it also has the ability to show heart and emotion in this scene by showing Walter's genuine distress at upsetting the Dude and then giving him a hug. It's both a darkly comedic and emotional/weirdly heart felt scene.
Arguably the best scene in the whole movie. It's very difficult to make an audience laugh so hard and then start to cry at the same time, but it's done so brilliantly here.
Everybody talking about the great lines on this scene. But nobody mention the "... he explored the beaches of Southern California, from La Jolla to Leo Carrillo and… up to… Pismo..." (0:40 - 0:46). I love this one. It's just the last part, when he stutters, that makes it so great
Didn't think it would be possible to laugh and cry at the same time until I first saw this scene and the scene immediately after with Van Zandt's version of Dead Flowers. So perfect. And it still gets me even after watching this film over 50 times
The thing that makes this 100x more funny is the fact that this guy's jackass personality annoys "The Dude" all movie. Then this happens. And watching the ashes blow into his face, he's having an internal meltdown. xDDDDDDDDD
@@moonscar119 Knowing the Coen brothers, that was definitely done on purpose and just adds onto to the nuance of all the great subtle details this film has to provide
The combination of the seriousness of the situation, the humor of ashes blowing in the wind and the final emotional connection makes this a classic scene we can all relate to. It always give me a smile and a chuckle, even when thinking back at a dark and difficult time in which I lost a loved one. Thanks Dude.

The greatest thing about this scene is that even though he is interring Donny's remains to the busom of the pacific, he knows once Dude is pissed at the face scattering that only rolling will help him. But not just the sentiment. He hugged him for reassurance. Life or death, they go roll. Regardless of the situation. It is their opium. Bowling supersedes even death rituals.
Every second of this scene is comedic genius. The Folgers can, the way Walter has no idea what to say about Donnie, the fact that Donnie is never once mentioned as a surfer until this moment, the random Vietnam tangent, Dude’s face as the ashes hit him, just everything. The Cohen brothers are masters of comedy.
Same here. My wife and I saw it last week. It was the first time in probably 8 years that I watched the movie, and I completely forgot about this scene. Busted up watching it.
Here I am in 2024 watching this trailer and showing it to an 82 year old man in southern France. He asking me of taking care of his ashes in case he died soon and spread them in the Mediterranean sea reminded me of this... I showed it to him and we laughed our asses off.... Thank you TBL ! The song at the end reminds me of times when you’re finally on the other end of a wave of crazy bullshit thrown your way and you finally have your life back.
I swore to my dad, that when he died, I'd do exactly what he wanted. Which is to play the Last Waltz version of The Weight then cremate him. I also told him that when I go to scatter part of his ashes I'm going to give the same speech Walter gave Donny and we started laughing. This is our favorite movie lol
Man that hug to me just encapsulates the awkwardness and beauty of human emotion. I love it everytime I remember about the big Lebowski. We like to envision everything going perfect but nothing does. The whole fuck it man is a nice touch.
One of my favorite scenes ever. In a movie that's side splitting funny, this moment is tender and real. Our characters are lovable losers who no matter what have each other. The fact that Walter and Dude paid for his remains and held a service prove that they were the closest that any of them had to a family. Walter tries his best to eulogize him and the Dude finally blowing his top shows that in their own way they tried to express grief. When the Dude shoves Walter the last time you can hear both their voices are slightly cracked and they hug knowing that they lost their friend and the gang won't be the same. Shout out to the Donnie's of the world who just want to hang with their friends. "Fuck it, let's go bowling."
I’m from Pismo. This was my dad & I’s favorite to watch together. I lost him 4 years ago & his ashes stay with me; before he left he asked to be cremated & I joked with him I’ll put him in a Folgers container & scatter him over the bosom of the Pacific Ocean. He got a kick out of it & said that’d be fine. I haven’t done it yet but I feel like someday soon I will. He was my best friend. I miss my dad

"everything is a travesty with you, man" is second best.
what the fuck does anything have to do with vietnam!?!?!
Same, I was literally waiting for that line!!
It's phenomenal because you're waiting the entire film for someone to say that to him
I think Donny was in Nam but he got discharged after he failed that left men face down in the muck and that's why Walter treats him like shit the whole movie.
The ashes don't even come CLOSE to touching the ocean.
I love this goddamm movie.
