- 1st video in a series that will feature a homemade deer block recipe pitted against several store-bought blocks. We will be using the new Tactacam Reveal X and SK cameras to capture side by side in the field footage. In this video, we share the recipe and how to produce your own blocks inexpensively with easy-to-source common ingredients. Recipe for the block shown: Poultry layer crumbles 4 parts or approx. 3.5lbs, Shelled whole corn 2 parts or 2.5lbs, Oats 1 part or 1lb, Shredded beet pulp 1 part or 8 oz, Black oil sunflower seeds 1 part or 1lb, Dried molasses 4 parts or 3.5lbs, 1 cup sugar, 2 TBS salt, 1 cup vegetable oil, 24 ounces pancake/maple-flavored corn syrup. Mix dry ingredients then oil and then syrup. Bake 1-1.5hrs center temperature 160° (Be sure to protect the top and bottom of boxes from the oven heat source and don't use plastic tape. Have fun.
Pretty good, gonna try it
Try using a drill and a paint mixing paddle. works great.
Thank you for sharing! Gonna try this for 2022 season
Now ii know like to know were did you get all the big bag's of your fix at I would like to try these out ???
Too bad you didn't include some video of deer coming to the blocks. If you don't have pictures, it didn't happen.
he did, check out the tacticam Deer Block Challenge part 2
this may be a stupid question, but what should the center of the blocks temp be, before calling it ready? I would assume 350, but I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong many more times.
Just from a baking point of view... I'm guessing that if the middle is not done, then it won't be "bound" - so when the critters get to the center, it'll be a goooey toostie pop that falls apart, vs that solid granola that will remain in tact longer. I'm guessing he is calling it 350 in the center, not sure there.
Could I interest you in a small cement mixer?
I bought a handheld Colomix style cement mixer about a week after I did this video.
@@foxoptic5887 😆good move..🍀
Have you figured what price would be compared to just buying a block?
At the time I could make these for about 5.00 and they had considerably better ingredients. (Less salt and filler than store blocks) This year they are probably more like 7.5-8. The blocks really don't seem to have increased much in our area. About 14-20 depending on size and brand. For the money the Purina block is what I would buy if I where doing store bought.
How about the follow up video? Did they work. No comparison to judge your block.
The blocks all worked well, had some battery issues with a couple of the cameras. Getting ready to set them again and try to finish this up.
Are you making this to bait deer so you can shoot deer?
I am testing the trail cameras, seeing what deer prefer, seeing the quality and number of deer in the area, and ultimately making it a bit easier for them in the harsh conditions of winter. I don't hunt any of the camera locations. If it was legal and I wanted to or needed to, I certainly might.
Baiting deer on public land is illegal in my State. If you are on private land... Get a mechanical deer feeder.
