This is so useful. I recently started a piece over that I initially did on smoother paper and just wasn't getting the boldness I wanted. So I went back to my favorite: Pastelmat.

Thank you for this. I've tended to stick with pastelmat and smooth watercolour paper, so seeing the other textures was really interesting. 😊
It was also good to see the two different blacks acting differently. They looked like they were the same colour before you laid down the pencil.
But (on camera, at least) the Derwent mm seems to give a much cooler tone under the pencil than the Canson m-t.
Not good, not bad - just another thing to think about! 😊

Indeed. There are always so many other factors to consider between different brands of everything. And also simple things like the temperature of your drawing space will affect how your pencils will perform from one day to the next

Isn't the Mt. Teintes Touch a sanded paper?

It is classed as a sand effect paper as opposed to something like Uart or Luxrchival which are true sanded papers. The Touch acts very much like those as it was more designed for pastel work. I prefer the MiTeintes Smooth for the colour pencil work as the coating has slightly less tooth.
