    In October 1994, my wife won a raffle on a local radio show in northern California. The prize was two free tickets to see the Rolling Stones during their "Voo Doo on the Lounge tour at the Oakland Coliseum. I was 39 years old and this would be my first rock concert. My wife was 34 years old and I think she had been to a concert when she was a lot younger, before we met. We were both born and raised in the country and we did not like large crowds. At the time I was an Officer with the California Highway Patrol, with more than 10 years on the job. I was Marine Corps veteran with 7 years of active duty, 1974 to 1980. In 1994, I was also in the USMC Reserves in the San Francisco Bay Area. We got a motel room within reasonable walking distance to the Oakland Coliseum. I had a fanny pack which was designed as a conceal carry holster. I wore the fanny pack with my 5 shot Smith & Wesson .38 caliber, Chief Special, 2 inch barrel revolver. I was able to sneak the gun past the lax security at the entrance to the concert. I think they were more concerned about people bringing booze inside. My thinking was if the security people find my gun, that I will show my credentials as an off duty cop and can legally carry a concealed firearm. The most they could do was to deny our entrance into the concert. We enjoyed the show, and near the end, my wife and I decided to leave early and beat the crowd (bad idea). It was close to midnight. We were walking on the sidewalk about 200 yards away from the concert and there were no other people in the area. Then I saw a group of 5 men walking towards us about 100 yards away. I already had my gun out and in my right hand. The gun was blued and it was hard to see it at night and the way I held it in my hand, you could not see the gun. The group of thugs got closer, I put myself between them and my wife. As they got within 15 feet or so, one of the guys asked if we could give him one dollar for gas, because their car ran out of gas. Yea, right. I knew this was a ruse. As soon as you reach into your wallet or your pocket, that would be the moment for them to strike. They had not seen my hand gun, yet. I did not say a word to them as I tried to keep a position of advantage. The guy doing the talking became angry because I would not answer him, however, I held my hand gun low near my waist about a couple of inches away from my right side. I was pointing the muzzle directly at the bigger guy standing next to the guy doing the talking. I kind of figured out their plan. The guy doing the talking is the distractor, the guy next to him was bigger and I knew he would be the one to strike first. He saw the gun pointed at his chest from about 6 to 8 feet feet away. He and I made eye contact, he knew without a doubt that he was going to get shot if they tried to jump us. The three other guys standing in the background also saw the gun. The bigger guy was nudging the "talker" telling him that they need to go away. The talker was getting more pissed, insisting that we give him money. Then his friend said something like "Shut up, he has gun". The talker then saw my gun and the look on his face was priceless. He backed off a little bit and I nudged my wife away as we backed away. I still did not say a word. The talker's ego and pride was hurt that I got the drop on them, he was still talking trash. I figured those guys also had weapons, by the way they were keeping their hands close to their waists and by their body language. I never turned my back on them and I stood my ground as they slowly backed away. I waited until they were about 100 yards away before we turned away to walk back to our motel room. My wife was very athletic (now ex-wife). She was a body builder and had won numerous contests, including Miss California and Miss USA in the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union). After we got back to our motel room, we talked about the incident and I know she would have fought those guys and she would not have given up. These are the kinds of incidents that are countless and nobody ever hears about because no body was hurt or called the police. We did not call the police, because it would have pointless.

    good thing it worked out and you're still alive, never know what could happen.... I had to use my .357 back in 05 on a few guys stealing my truck with my tool trailer attached to it, i was self employed back then, I went out and yelled at them and they pointed a shotgun at me so I ran into my house and told my brother to call the police and no sooner than I said that one of the guys came onto my porch and pointed the shotgun at me and told me to get on the ground, I ran to my room and grabbed my revolver and fired two rounds towards the guy with the gun and I was lucky enough to hit him in the side. well that pretty much ended the situation. he was pretty much expiring on my porch and his partner got out of my truck and ran away. no charges filed on me by the D.A.. but I never want to go through that again....

    this is a great tribal knowledge story. Their is case law to support deadly force if you are trapped. Also from the totality of the story of multiple people robbing cars is also a good justified use of deadly force. What is also key to this story when the coyote saw that the rabbit was armed and ran away Gun Collector recognized deadly force was no longer an option. This is a scenario that i never considered so i am thankful for this tribal knowledge.

Responsible concealed carry permit holders are not vigilantes, or crazy people looking to get into altercations. We carry to keep others safe. Fair play to you, sir. One of the times I am acutely aware of my vulnerability is when I am traveling across a state line where I am denied my constitutional right to bear arms. The idea that government would force us to face a situation as you did without the means of self defense is outrageous. The New England states are a target rich environment for criminals because virtually no law abiding citizen carries. I've never heard of this type of shakedown happening in Alaska. Criminals up here know that pretty much everyone is carrying. I carry a Glock 23 with two spare mags...40 rounds to neutralize any threat. I'm in the process of transitioning to a Glock 43X MOS, so with two spare mags, I'll now have 46 rounds on me.

      I think that's probably a good idea although it could open you to a whole slew of questions. I would say that when ever this happened to me the bad guys were drugged up or just down right bad apples who want no contact with the police.

      Yes, it's was a little crazy. Just shows that some people like to take advantage of a bad situation. Point is to always be aware and armed.

    Good story. One of the good things about the gun loving South is that thugs hardly ever mess with people in their cars since a lot of people, or most people in rural areas, all have firearms next to the drivers seat.

      A z Try to avoid bad situations by all means and if you can't carry a gun learn other self defense techniques as well as carry other non lethal defense objects.

    This story is racially sensitive/tolerant, but we all know that all of these attackers/robbers were of Scandinavian decent. Something about that Viking blood running through their veins.

    It's sad for me becasue I live in Australia our gun laws are very strict and prohibit the use of firearms or bladed weapons for use of defending life. It sucks but our gun laws work and as a person hoping to join the police I do not dare break the law. I am of a slightly less muscular build so a force multiplier such as a firearm would be helpful, do you have any ideas for self defence tools or weapons that I could use.

    • @GunCollector007
      @GunCollector007  8 лет назад

      Rooster Taege I've heard it's pretty tough over there. I have a video on less than lethal weapons. I recommend pepper spray or a Kubiton. Thanks.

    • @flyingaussie7828
      @flyingaussie7828 8 лет назад

      thanks for the reply i will check that out only problem is anything made specifically to cause bodily harm is considered an illegal weapon an if found in possession of one can face serious jail time. So kubitons and pepper spray are restricted items in which only services such as the police can possess them obviously the police use full length extendable batons but kubitons fall under the same category
