One of the great things about a small town church. 90% of all men are armed including the preacher. And probably 30-40% of the women are also armed. Me and my wife both carry.

Haha, so I go to a small nondenominational church that's actually fairly closely associated with John MacArthur if anyone knows who he is. A year ago or so, we did a fairly large remodel, because we still had orange carpet and pews from the seventies, so forty years ago or so. It's a fairly small church so all the work was done by people who volunteered their time. So it took a few months but finally we got the whole thing finished. The first Sunday when everything was done, the pastor just said hey, please be careful with all the knives and guns you guys carry, and make sure you don't put holes in the new pews, and he said it as a joke, but it just made me thankful for the like minded attitude by most people in my church. Also, one of the elders is a former deputy sheriff, and one time, he went up to close the service in prayer, and his suit jacket got caught on his pistol so everyone could see, funniest thing ever haha. Sorry that you had to deal with this though.

I have to say, your congregation sounds a little more to my liking. I am very surprised that that these guys acted like this. I guess with more people comes more regulations and when regulations grow, freedom dies!
California, or perhaps New York would be a prime example.
Anyway, thank you for sharing your story as well as taking the time to watch the video!

Chase, You did everything right it was they who caused panic. The guy could have just asked to speak with you in private from the beginning.
Luckily no such issues at our church. 12 official armed security team congregants and dozens more unofficial.

I would of said, “Yes, I’m legally concealing and carrying a firearm. No, I’m not coming with you.”
If they keep bothering, then I would ask if they would want me to leave or can I stay to watch the service. They were just interrogating you, that’s it. It could of gone bad where they could of tried to take your firearm away from you or wrestle you for it. Give them an answer and either stay or leave. They can’t hold you against your own will legally.

I work in the security field. Those so called security were way out of line. Had I approached you. I would’ve politely said. We got a report of a person with a gun. As soon as you and I talked and verified you had your concealed license. I would’ve again politely thanked you for your patience and left it at that. Nothing more would’ve been said. Except shook your hand and said have a nice day.

"we're trying to keep everyone save." ok....I don't know if anyone in my church is armed but with a retired sheriff, a guy who does armed security, two police officers, former military personnel & a truck driver who carries because his job requires him to carry cash I hope they come to church armed as well as any other member of the congregation who can legally carry. At my sister's church she not only carries but pointed out everyone on their security force, one was the pastor. A friend of mine at work knows everyone on the security team as well as their sidearm of choice. None of these people have ever come up to anyone asking out loud "are you armed" or even when someone was talking about guns did they cause a scene. Why you ask...cuz doing that would cause panic. Not me having a gun. Nor would they send the entire group after me

I'm curious. Were these gentlemen actually confronting a guy with a gun with out actually being armed themselves? A nut case would not have had conversation. They just start shooting. A group that wants to be safe would have the means to fend off any attack. Parishioners would be armed if they had their CCW.

    • @chasepalagi7675
      @chasepalagi7675  8 лет назад

Isn't that something? It was clear that not one ounce of forethought went into their confrontation. I'm uncertain what their plan of attack was If I was there to harm people. Not to mention, If someone was on "the edge" I could see how their haphazard approach could push that person into the very direction they were hoping to avoid. I truly believe their hearts were in the right places though. It was simply a lack of training/ understanding of how to approach situations such as this one.

Honestly I wouldn’t go to a church that wouldn’t allow its parishioners or members to carry a firearm. Everybody knows the least safe place on earth is a gun free zone. This is why schools and churches of been targets for violence. I thought you handled it very well. Like you said nobody’s perfect and in a very tense situation specially when they’ve got you circled like you said I would do the same thing including not going back! Honestly the only thing that you can do to prevent this type of action from any sure sure establishment is that you either keep it completely concealed, or you get to gather with as many members of that church that carry guns and encourage others to do so and then when one person is singled out now you have a coalition or at least a network or group that will stand with you! Don’t get me wrong I really love God and I pray daily I read his word daily but I am not above leaving a church to treat people that way. I’m also a tithing member which means I give quite a bit and when I leave they lose a lot.

      David Horton Thank you David.
In fairness, I probably should have been more careful to keep everything concealed. It really is a shame that it has to be that way but I guess that is the world we live in. I personally prefer to conceal my firearms for several reasons. Most of which are strategic. Retaining the element of surprise. Also I find it very nerve wracking to be in close proximity to people while open carrying, especially when people are behind you like in grocery lines ect. I always try to be aware of my surroundings however it's seems like more work when open carrying. Also I suppose avoiding unwanted attention is not a bad thing. Every one has different preferences, this just happens to be mine. If you have anything you feel you may need help with or any sort of gear recommendations such as Guns, holsters, sights, belts, ect just let me know and I'd be happy to help.

SpacemanMoto It was certainly a larger church. My first thought was to not engage at all. Then I was thinking that I wanted to keep everything smooth for my wife's sake as she worked there. When the one guy came up he was actually kind of timid. I figured that I'd talk to him outside alone to ease his, or whoever's mind. Honestly I was having fun with it initially but it got annoying in a quick hurry.
Although I knew better even then, I figured it would be the polite and least confrontational way of going about it. At any rate, lesson learned!

@@chasepalagi7675 I actually was on a church security staff much like the one you've described for about 5 years. We all carried radios, and our primary focus was on the safety of the children. It is a larger church, at that time we had 1200-1800 members fluxing any given month with people who would attend once or twice and move on, perhaps trying other churches for the right fit. Another synchronicity, my wife at the time worked for the church as well similar to you. So I can definitely appreciate your situation, wanting to be as helpful as possible and ease the minds of her superiors. All these people saying they would have put the church security staff in their place, simply aren't able to appreciate your situation. You handled yourself very well in my opinion. You likely would not have been as frustrated if this had happened in my church, as our unofficial head of the team and long time usher was an avid 2nd Amendment proponent and often hosted recreational shooting events on his property. Except if someone wants to come in and shoot up the church, then metal detectors won't protect anything. Only having concealed carry holders, private security, or police officers present at the time of the attack will stop anything.

I think the State of Alabama, did a PSA on Active Shooter/ Place of employment. I was impressed with the whole video. I live North if DC in MD, we have VIP CCW (Slim to None chances any above average person will get one, extremely difficult, expensive and you need a Special Circumstance and Political connections. Next door in Virginia they have CCW and honor reciprocity, different world), anyway it's a wet dream come true to think you can prevent an Active Shooter scenario. AFAIK all the ACRONYMS around here practice, train and prepare for swift and immediate FIRST RESPONDER TACTICAL EFFICACY and the intrinsic value of the CCW (in all likelihood the CCW = 1stResponder.). None I know in that industry would ever ask or answer any question of the sort. There are so many people around our area that do work in that "Business"... When you visit the DC Metro Area, if someone cuts you off in traffic, you never know (LEO? FED? MIL? COURTS? DIPLOMAT? Probably a shmuck running late and low on funds looking to Ca$hIn so he can COP his Fix and meet his buddies so he can hit on your recently unescorted Wife at Church? You never know so we just let it go. It's easier that way.
The last cost of this "Excellent Learning Opportunity" besides this guy getting free Rent in your Head... The Wife Tax, mine would have taxed me worse than the King of England taxed the soon to be Pilgrims. Hell I tried to take my BenchMade 941 into South Korea (In my checked in suitcase), South Korea's "ICE" x-rayed it and taped it uo with Yellow "DoNotPassGo" tape. I had an appt. an interview, a an education and an opportunity to temporarily forfeit possession, get a receipt, return upon departure, pay a storage and handling fee, Ship it via the Airline back to the States (on the same flight). SIX CENTIMETERs=Max Blade Length EDC Type of folder/Fixed. What about a Diving Knife 11-14 CENTIMETERs it's the Agents Discretion. Anyway that was two months ago and I am still paying off that tax. I am a licensed carrier and carry every time I leave the house. When there is a sign posted saying no guns, I either secure the gun in my locked car or I go somewhere else. In my state, you can only carry in churches when they specifically allow it.
Now, I believe that gun free zones are potential hunting zones for anyone with bad intent. Mass shootings do not happen where licensed carriers might be armed. That said, as a licensed concealed carrier, I am a good guy. I am law-abiding. Carrying makes me extra polite. I do not wish to anger anyone, I do not want to start conflict. My gun doesn't make me right; it's only for unavoidable situations. Unavoidable means I had NO part in starting it.
If someone asks you, it means your concealment strategy is likely not up to snuff. Uncool of you. Be better. You gave them a reason to ask, otherwise they'd ask everyone. Your response strategy just drips of being antisocial, which is not what I want to see in a concealed carrier. If someone asks you, it's probably your fault. Maybe you wanted them to see it, maybe you want to seem intimidating, which is not what guns are for in a free society. They are for the opposite.
No one should ever know you're carrying. No strategy is perfect, but the only ones who should even think of it should be trained observers like cops, who probably won't care. I've had numerous interactions with police, and they are all very relaxed about it. They know I've had a background check.
In short, don't be a dick. You're supposed to be a good guy. Act like one. Telling someone to go look up laws is not a good guy behavior; it's an angry, antisocial response to a question you yourself have likely given them reason to ask by doing a poor job of concealment. If the answer is yes, it's, "Yeah, how did you know?" I'd want to know what I needed to improve on in my concealment strategy, not tell someone they needed to go study law.

This a good anecdote that well illustrates a scenario which a person doing concealed carry with a firearm might well encounter at some point. I have been on both sides of situations similar to this, and (since you asked) I will add in my two cents worth of opinion.
In general I think you handled it well ( would be interesting to hear this tale told from their side, however ).
Everyone who goes armed in public should of be aware of what legal limitations exist on concealed carry. This can vary quite a bit from state to state, alas. Restrictions almost always apply on school grounds, in banks and courthouses , and frequently churches as well. There may well still be a Federal law in effect in the U.S. that prohibits carrying a gun inside churches or any place of worship.
The church in question should most definitely have posted signs stating their own policies. It actually sounds as though they did not know what their policy was, seeing as how they A) confronted you, then B) couldn't tell you if you were required to leave , or leave your weapon in your vehicle before returning to services. If they had a definitive policy in place there would have been no need for a lengthy Q&A session to attempt to ascertain your "motivations" and "intentions".
As is common with amateur security efforts their methods of determining whether you were a potential threat were poorly chosen. Directly approaching you in a crowd could easily have precipitated the kind of incident I am sure they meant to prevent. Passive observation would have served them better at that time.
It is also clear that they had NO game plan for handling things if you had presented a threat to them, as it would seem that none of them were armed. Unless at least one of them was playing coy and was in fact armed ( which would raise my assessment of their procedures a tiny bit).
TLDR - Good job keeping your cool. Amateur security is exactly that.

I have to say, very well said! as mentioned in other comments, I did my very best to tell this story as true and accurate as I could possibly remember however, no matter how flat you make a pancake, there will always be two sides! That being said, I too would be very interested to hear their side of the story and as a matter of fact, I've been trying to make this happen on video for those who may be interested. I think it would be very educational for those who conceal carry as well as security personnel who may have not considered how to handle such things.
If they felt it necessary to even address it, (which clearly they did). I believe this situation could have been handled in about 15 seconds whether it be inside, or perhaps right outside the bathroom when given the opportunity. I will not get into this right now as these are some of the things I would like to address if my interview with the church security comes to fruition. Suffice to say that if they truly had a problem with me carrying, they could have simply asked me to leave my sidearm in the vehicle. At which point I could have (and would have ) politely explained that I understand their position however I will now be leaving. It's funny how nobody wants good conceal carriers to have means of protection where we would need it most as the SC incident has unfortunately illustrated. Call me paranoid, but that is just where I'm at. If you don't mind my asking, do you think it's out of line to carry in a church setting? and if not what would you have done in my position? at any rate thank you for you well though out comment and thank you for watching!

    1) I would have probably been as cooperative as you were, I don't know if I would have been as patient. 2) Effective is a subjective term. If their objective was to make you uncomfortable enough to make you leave and not come back, I'd say they did pretty good. I will tell you what I did as a 'security" person the day a volunteer came up to me and told me the guy in line at the community meal (soup kitchen) was wearing a gun concealed. I asked the volunteer if he had done anything wrong or even acted suspicious, then politely educated the volunteer and even went as far as confiding to her I had my concealed weapon on me. Issue diffused. 3) Quite frankly, the best passive mitigation is profiling. Someone looks out of place, is dressed inappropriately, acting paranoid, standing in a corner or doorway at inappropriate times, etc. Watch from a distance, and if the behavior is disturbing, make contact, not confront. The attendant at the door should not be watching the service, he should be watching the people and the door. And if all else fails, hope to God there is a good guy in the congregation with a gun. In our service there is always at least one good guy with a gun under his shirt, and that is our pastor.

It was all mildly amusing until I noticed the guy following me to get my license plate number. That's when I lost my patients and went back in to make it known.

+Chase Palagi Thanks for the response my friend! And the kind words. We're both anticipating such a miracle. Never planned on having children, and I wasn't supposed to be able to produce. So it's a big deal in our families for sure. Much appreciated! I'm thinking about making an upcoming video about the incident. It literally occurred around 10:30pm central time this evening. I've never once thought I would have to put my hand on my pistol. It got very close b/c it was dark dealing with a belligerent, intoxicated fool yelling and screaming through the neighborhood. I try my best to always stay calm, like you say, and non confrontational. Stayed on my porch, kept my distance and didn't say anything until he almost stepped on our property. The guy started shaking the stop sign on our corner trying to take it out of the ground. Stuff hardly ever happens around here. Very safe, friendly folks. Guy wasn't from here and 2 girls walking behind him were trying to control his drunken rage.

+Bushcraft & Banjos That is wonderful! I enjoy hearing things like that! (your baby I mean.)
I have to say, dealing with drunk and belligerent people is no fun at all! Unfortunately I have had my fair share of dealing with them as well. I do my very best to mind my own business until they make it my business which can happen very easily as you may now know!
I feel for the police that have to deal with that on a daily basis!
The problem with situations like the one you discribe is most of the time any altercation is done and over with before the police arrive!
If you don't mind some unsolicited advice, I would STRONGLY recommend pepper spray!
I don't know if you saw the video I did where I sprayed myself but I am a firm believer in it! The nice thing about it is you can error on the side of your saftey and spray someone if you're put into a situation where you unsure. I'm telling you, It will take the fight out of anyone (aside from the very small percentage uneffected by it).
Obviously I advocate CC and always will, but pepper spray bridges the wide gap of leathal force and compliance very nicely. It would be terrible if you had your gun drawn and he charged you with no weapon! You could possibly go away for a long time!
Anyway, I'll tell you what, if you're interested, I'll send you some of the stuff I was sprayed with on my dime.
Just let me know if you'd like that and I'd be happy to.
Anyway, good luck with everything and if you have any questions or I can help in any way just let me know.

+Chase Palagi My officer buddy called me shortly after the incident. I reported the 4-way stop sign being damaged. All were arrested. Caught as I was talking to dispatch😆. This highly populated neighborhood intersection is way too busy w/kids-pets-humans! Chaps my ass. My neighbors appreciate my awareness. A nurse of mine lives across the street. After years of her drawing my blood for lab work, we're now neighbors, close friends. She and her husband just acquired a Kel-Tec PF9. They're older folks and new to semi-autos. Said she wanted her old, simple 357revolver! Taught her how to break down and cleaned it. Fantastic area to be IMO. Nice fella who owns local gun store, lives on same street. I'm working on getting my community more involved with responsible gun ownership. It's goal of mine to unite like-minded neighbors in this small area. I believe it is so important to establish that dialogue, be known and share your knowledge. Enjoy talking w/ya and your Intriguing videos!

While you are doing that, lets call the police so we can have a complete sharing of information. I think it best to completely avoid this happening to anyone else in the future. Since I have given you my information you should do the same. That will make discussing the matter further with your minister and possibly my lawyer, much easier.

Chase I go to a seeker church as well and next to the fact that they water the gospel down, they also have some silly rule about not caring guns there as well. Honestly I think I said a stupid rule because it’s the gun free zones to get shot up! It’s incredibly sad that churches like that exist, where you can get 10 people in a room that I’ve never shot a gun. Obviously the one that had a gun and left it at home didn’t trust himself he wasn’t train I’ve been to a lot of training classes and private training lessons and I’m very well-trained and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Buddy of mine was lawfully concealing at a big brand store, he bent over to get something from the bottom shelf and a big lady behind him saw his gun, then she just SCREAMES "HES GOT A GUN!!!!" and is pointing at him! My buddy literally went to draw his weapon because he thought something was happening then realized she was screaming at him! Damn he was scared. Some people just will never understand the logic of law abiding citizens being armed.

That would really piss me off.
I get that it's up to us to keep our guns concealed but give me a break!
I know that an armed populace scares the shit out of some people but how do these people (i.e the lady in your story) know that he was not an undercover officer or something similar. Lol I guess it's scream first, ask questions later... because that sounds like a solid course of action when seeing a guy with a gun! Whether he was good or bad, I'd think that that would be the very last thing you'd want to do. On the other hand, if logic was part of their process, This video wouldn't be up to talk about such things!

That being said, if there is no policy as he admitted, there isnt much to talk about anyway. Absolutely ridiculous and completely unprofessional. I know this video is a few years old but bear in mind...had your church actually faced an "active shooter", you probably would have been the only one in a position to engage and stop the threat. This is why we carry...for the protection of ourselves, our loved ones, and those around us. With that said, as someone who carries daily, I have had to change up my routine a bit. In public, if I need to use the restroom, I always use the stalls no matter what. Much less chance of my firearm being seen and moreover....much less chance of being seen and reported as a potential threat.

I have chalked this on up to lesson learned and wanted to share my experience with others to make them aware of situations that may arise when carrying a firearm. If something similar happened again, I would simply leave and wouldn't return as I don't like being in places that I'm not wanted.

This guy did not identify himself first off and seeing others standing watching me when I stepped out, my first reaction is to think of my wife's and children's safety so I would stop, position myself to talk to them right then and there and demand they identify themselves before I would have any conversation with them. If they declined I would tell them that we are finished unless they called the police. If that was the case, I would gladly speak with any officer who is identified as such and then let them know I'm returning back to where I was sitting with my family and then back away not turning my back and go sit down with my family knowing that this may continue after the service . I then would not return

We have 4 armed off-duty cops for security and to direct traffic through the busy intersection at church. I work security for a missile defense contracting company and can honestly say that there is little to nothing to stop anyone from going crazy in church. If someone wants to shoot people they will defiantly be able to get a few rounds off. The only thing stopping that person from killing more people is someone in there with a gun. That's why my gun rarely leaves my side.

  • @jayn8392
    @jayn8392 5 лет назад +1

I think you handled it just fine. If they didn't want you there with the firearm and it was that big a deal to them that they posted a bunch of "guards" and followed you to get your plates, then they should have just asked you to leave. I would have started being angry as soon as the guy said he wasn't asking you to leave, yet continued harrassing you about the situation. They handled it very poorly and made it into a big deal when it wasn't one. If I was you I would have done close to the same things except I would not have been nearly as courteous about halfway through and I likely would never go back and I would recommend to my wife that maybe she should consider putting in some resumes elsewhere. I'm not religious but If I was in your shoes I would most certainly boycott. There really is no surefire way to prevent a crazy person from shooting a place up. The best thing to do at this point is to have responses in place in case something like that happens it can be resolved with minimal losses. If they have security already then maybe they should consider training and arming them. If I was a security head there and someone reported that a guy was taking a piss and seemed to have a firearm in his pants I wouldn't even approach the firearm holder. I would simply have him pointed out and keep an eye on him. Like you mentioned, calling you out in front of a room full of people is far more likely to cause issues.

I would have initiated a conversation with the Pastor and relay your intention to carry in the church. Get his "buy in" so that anyone that has a concern can do so prior to church services and without being in front of the congregation. Again, you dont have to since you can carry legally. But would eliminate petty issues like you had to deal with. What they did was just juvenile and not professional. Those are the kind of people that end up shooting a "good guy" trying to eliminate a threat.

andy orell It makes me wonder too.
I have noticed that there is no distinction to those that oppose the 2nd amendment.
As far as they're concerned we are all crazy lunatics that will inevitably snap. I wish it was that easy to convince people but unfortunately we are starting from a deficit in our position.
What I mean is more times than not, the mere presence of firearms in the hands of the right people are enough to peacefully resolve situations. Let alone all the lives that have been saved by using them to take out these cowards. It happens everyday but it is very difficult to quantify things that were prevented, or things that haven't happened yet.
There is however, countless stories of guns being used defensively but never get reported on because it doesn't fit the narrative of the media.
Anyway, thank you for watching as well as taking the time to comment.

Part of our church’s armed security team here. This is a lack of training and clear policies/processes for their team. We allow conceal carry, but not open carry. We scan for people who are conceal carrying. If we identify someone, we radio a description of the person, where on the body they are carrying, and where they are sitting. Extra eyes will be on them, but no harassment. There are times, depending on the situation, where we make contact. It’ll be no more than 2 people so the visitor doesn’t feel attacked. We let them know we allow conceal carry and thank them for not open carrying. Let them know we have a robust security team and if there is an active shooter, please do not engage so they are not mistaken for a bad guy. (Unless the threat is right beside them). And that’s rare contact. Mostly just keep a set of eyes on the person.

    • @csell5904
      @csell5904 Месяц назад

Example: a conceal carrier came in. I noticed he was carrying. I radioed the description and where he went to sit. Because of where he was sitting, we made contact. One member casually walked up and asked if he could speak to him in the foyer real quick. They went into the foyer. The person who made the contact did all the talking with one other security person off to the side. Polite, non threatening, non accusatory. He ended up being retired LEO. Placed membership, and joined our security team.
