I was able to do this as a 5'1, 115-pound girl. Biggest tips: 1. Hold the brick as high up on your chest as possible 2. The more air in your lungs the more you float so don't be afraid to take deep breaths 3. Swim as fast as you can without tiring out before reaching the brick so you have more time to get back 4. If you're not the fastest swimmer, freestyle there and scissor kick back. 5. Breathe normally and stay relaxed. You will be tired afterward but it's only 1:20 long and you got this :D
I had my first practice today and everything was going great, I could swim all the laps and tread water for 2 mins, I've never been a great swimmer and have little experience especially with controlling my breathing. I got to the brick dive and could locate it well, but when I come out of the water and blow the water out of my nose I start to sink immediately and I can't keep the brick out of the water, I try and lean back more but my head sinks and I panic, I'm super scared for my test in a couple of weeks.
I had my 20 pounds brick exam back in March. I did my lifeguard guard in a week ( intensive ) Some people in my class were able to do the eggbeater and pull up the brick with 1 arm and use the other to paddle. The others were putting the brick on their chest...I tried anything from putting the brick on my chest. pulling it up with my arm. Nothing was working...Literally. Plus, we haven't so much time to practice the brick. Turns out that I failed the test on the exam day. ( yeah but hold on for the happy ending ) BUT My instructor had faith in me. He knew my potential so he gave me 1 more week to practice and try the brick again. During this week, I found out that everyone has their own techniques and mines was to put the brick on my waist and be as flat as possible. THAT SIMPLE. I was pressuring myself to be like the others which is completely unrealistic because our bodies are differents. On the day of exam part #2, I successfully passed the test. Effortlessly. Your videos inspire me to keep trying! Thanks a lot, Adam
I remember during mine it was a 20lb brick, what I did was to dive about 5m back and scoop it up underwater and use my momentum to rocket myself upwards
Your video helped me pass my pre test but I had to leave the place and reschedule the actual written test because I had heat exhaustion I don’t drink water that much but now I will good thing my instructor said the next time when I come I won’t have to do the pre test again
Hey man, your content has been super helpful in my training! I have a question though. I've been trying out the brick dive with a 12lb shot put but I find that even fully on my back it pulls me straight to the bottom. I can only kick about 7 yards with it until I go under. I'm a tall and in shape dude so I have no clue why its so hard for me. Any ideas?
I recommend doing the breaststroke kick instead of flutter kicking on your back because you can honestly use each glide/kick to boost yourself forward and up. (which will keep you above the surface longer and looks better) I recommend holding the brick or shotput like a dumbbell in the center of ur chest like a squeeze press, and try to get ur mind muscle connection in your fore arms and shoulders to help support ur weight. Don't be afraid to go back and forth between flutter kicks and breaststroke kick, whatever gets the job done. Hope that helps, lmk how it goes.
I have my test tomorrow! I’m super nervous. Treading water is easy and swimming is fine but my ears pop bad in deep water so I try to go everything fast
Im taking my test soon, everything is cake besides the dive test. When I go down, the pressure hurts my ears and water goes up my nose. Hopefully I pass :/
So 10 lbs is super easy but 20 not so much. I am very light (96 pounds). I find the 10 pound super easy but the 20 pound is much more difficult. I have not been able to successfully even get to the surface I find it hard to grip (small hands) then by the time I’ve gripped it my body has risen and I can’t push off enough to surface. What can I do to overcome this.
Before you grab the brick on the bottom, exhale thru your nose to sink and get ur feet planted on the bottom. Then grab the brick and do a light push off. In order to get the surface, Bec u are light, you want to experiment with a combination of fast breaststroke kick and flutter kicks to get up. Once ur up you can lay on your back and float a little easier. I think faster flutter kicks will help you. Then do a bicycle kick when kicking on your back to the start holding the brick on your chest. It’s going to be tough, but finding the technique that works for you is the best short term solution. Longer term would be so workout and get some lean muscle mass to weigh a little more.
I passed everything except for the brick test. I started to cramp up and I got it up but it slipped out my hands. Instructor said it wouldn’t of counted Anyway because I fucked up going down. Retest is Saturday. I’m rlly bummed out. Did everything right except for that.
I had to redo it and my biggest issue was my lungs and breathing and also brick position. Only tip I have is keep the brick by your collar bone but for breathing it really depends on lung strength and breath control which I have neither of…. Lmao
Hey I’m thinking about taking the course but I was just wondering in the pre test are they very strict on the strokes? Like do you have to do Front Crawl and Breast Stroke perfect?
I haven’t done the course yet myself, but I do know that it doesn’t have to be perfect! As long as your technique is correct (so you won’t injure yourself) and you’re not swimming on your side or back, you’ll be fine!
I live in Canada so our regulations might be different but there were people in my distance swim that were going fucking sideways across the pool cause while doing backstroke, so I'd say no
I’m about to do a life guard test at one of my pools and I have very sensitive ears. Like when I go down deeper than 3 ft they start to hurt. And The brick test I know I have to go down deep. What should I do? Undure the pain?
10 feet is reasonable depth.. For me my ears always pop when I go down head first.. so I recommend trying feet first and exhaling out of your nose. If the pool was 12-14 feet, ears are def popping no matter what. But 10 they might not
One thing you can do is equalize, where you hold your nose and swallow or blow into your ears and they won’t pop. I dived and my ears just don’t pop anymore it’s so useful.
Hallo The first i want to make thanks for you , form Egypt to you in America, please i have some questions how many salary of hours in this job and how i can to be lifeguard in America but I'm liveguard and swimming coach now in Egypt. Thank you so much 🥰
Do you have any specific tips for locating the brick? When they place it in the water are you not allowed to watch or are you able to see where they put it?
I recommend trying to locate it before going underwater, by swimming above it and looking through the surface of the water. Also what happens is when a person goes and finishes the brick dive, they just hand the instructor the brick when they are done and it gets thrown back in right infront of everyone. It’s very reasonable
I need help!!! My lifeguard test is in 3 days, and I'm not making the 1:40. I can do everything fine, but I'm always 10 seconds over, and I need to be faster. If you have any tips that would be great. Thank you!!!!
I would swim front crawl towards the brick, and then once ur close u can change to breaststroke and keep ur head above to look around for it while moving. Blow air bubbles out of your nose to sink faster on your way down. Then do a light push of (maybe a little harder) to speed up your time coming up. Then do a mix of flutters and elementary backstroke kick on your way back. You have to push yourself to make the time. (YOU GOT THIS!)
Make sure u track where they throw it at the beginning, and when ur swimming over to it, slow down and look around before submerging. You can always adjust a little bit once ur swimming down to get it. You’ll be fine don’t worry!
For the brick dive test, u do a surface dive. A surface dive is not when ur out of the water diving into the pool like a normal dive. It’s when u are treading in the water, and u push urself under (either head first or feet first, to get to the bottom retrieve the brick)
I’d recommend doing the headfirst dive because to me it’s quicker. You tread, put your arms in front of you and then try and touch your toes. From there just kick your way to the bottom. For a Feet first dive I recommend trying to get yourself as high as you can out the water, then tuck your arms in or put them above your head so you sink as quickly as possible

What what arm above the water and the other paddling. I feel like this is exactly how it should be done.

Depends on the pool. Typically anywhere from 10 to 13 ft
