Well as well has being a biker i have my HGV to and to be honest other drivers just do not understand trucks at all, they dont realize the blind spots you have or how wide you need to take corners etc. One of my pet hates is when a car just about to enter traffic lights slams on their breaks at amber not realizing the truck behind cannot stop on a dime. Defensive driving in a truck is a must yet other drivers need to be taught these things to.

Excellent. I agree with your philosophy! I’m always considerate of hgv drivers. I do see many though, that drive too close behind others, overtake and don’t have the speed or momentum then hold up the number two lane for miles. A couple of days ago I had to hold back in the number three lane to wait for a a wide load with a small house on its back, that didn’t have speed of momentum to pass (in high winds!) the hgv in number one lane. For ages he held in number 2 with his load overhanging number three. Shocking.
Typical HGV driver. As a rule of thumb, whatever a HGV driver tells you he earns, knock a third off and then you're closer to the true amount. Drivers like boasting about £50k earnings but very few actually ever earn anywhere near that. The ones that do earn 50k are doing 70-80 hrs per week and alternating 5/6 shifts pw and 4/5 nights away pw to get that money, no life balance whatsoever. I've worked in the industry for over 20 years and over 15 of those years have been spent on petrol/chemical and bitumen tankers, I've only touched £50k on a couple of occasions and it made me miserable, depressed and stressed because I was giving up my entire life to do it, not worth it at all, better off with £35k and an actual home, family and social life IMO. Most HGV drivers talk a lot of BS when It comes to money.
Great to hear that Fred Dibnah has in fact not passed on, and is seeing out his days as a trucker, however, his language has entered a downward spiral since becoming regular greasy spoon visitor, but good to see he still displays the common sense and no nonsense attitude we all know and love him for. 😊
I apply the exact same advice on my motorbike. In a hgv assume everyone is a twat so you don't kill them. On a motorbike assume that everyone is a twat so you don't get killed by them.
The reason most get anywhere near 50k is employers taking piss with hours and nights out. Money aint great if you've got to work all the hours god sends
I totally agree with you, every other vehicle is a potential hazard, and they don’t realise you can’t stop or react as quick as they can. £50k isn’t enough for the responsibility that you have. Stay safe 👍🏼.
Love it! I drive a car thinking exactly the same about everyone else. 😂 There are those of us car drivers that absolutely appreciate what you do for the rest of us, especially over the past few years when things have been hectic. So thank you, and mad respect.
27 years driving class one and last 10 years doing mainland europe and if I'm honest i actually hate coming back into the UK as the standard of driving is atrocious
I have always had respect for truck drivers to the point that I will always give way to them, no matter how far I am along the road to them. My dad was an artic driver in the days before computers, power steering, and trucks became miniature computers on 18 wheels. I used to drive a Bedford TK in the 80s and I loved it. I salute all artic drivers.
Needed spinach pop eye styleeee to push and pull. And double de clutch on some serious gearboxes. Best box, Eaton twin splitter. Most steering wheel attendants wouldn’t know what a clutch and a gearstick is in a lorry, never mind seen one. £50k a year. No chance. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@numbnutz7832 I've driven a Scania 112 with full clutch and manual gear box, and to be perfect honest with I would much rather have a modern truck with full automatic gearbox and all mod com technology............ And if your being really honest so would all of you boring old back in the day brigage, with your outdated views and comments regarding the younger generation of drivers. Given the choice you would all have a modern day truck any day of the week. Work smarter not harder !.
@@ChattingWithMeHGV Yes I agree. Although I do miss doing the double clutch, I always thought that was so cool, in the same way As I love listening to air brakes. I know! I am sad.😂
@@numbnutz7832 I trained and passed my class 1 way way back in 73 on a Eaton twin speed .loved that box .Last one I had was a range change with 18 diff speeds. Was not too keen on that as still got a bit of a lump on my left thumb from years of lifting the gear change knob .
Driving standards are absolutely shocking these days even though the Test has got a lot harder since I passed in the 1980's. The amount of times I see roundabouts used incorrectly for instance.
He's talking about now. There are a few on that money (I know some). They certainly won't be working for Stobarts (Culina). You don't get that sort of money for 40 hours but what truck driver works only 40 hours nowadays? Truck drivers contracts are at best 45 hours. Most are 50 hours or even 55 hours. The WTD was designed to stop drivers working too many hours but transport companies immediately jumped on the 13 hour maximum day, 11 hour minimum daily break and 45 minute driving break and made it the norm. It's called free market capitalism. More profit at the expense of workers.
My dad taught me that if you go driving with the thought that every driver could hit you well it’s makes you look out for potential problems/ accidents. We should have retesting every 5-10 years to get rid of really bad drivers. Great video mate Mandy southwest UK
An you wonder why there is a shortage who an why would you won’t to do this job 🤔 Full credit to this Hgv driver an his mannerisms well done you there’s not many of us left
I recognize the roundabout at Hermiston Gait and going onto the bypass on Edinburgh South ,its a trickey roundabout and the driver did really well ,well driven my man 😀😀😀
I had a Polish driver tailgating me with his HGV truck in an average 50mph roadworks at the bottom of the M3 Chandlers Ford and Eastleigh when I needed the middle lane for Portsmouth and Southampton East. Right up the boot of the car repeatedly flashing the headlamps instructing me to move out of his way. I was already in the split of the lanes when he did this. So there was no way I was going to the M27 Bournemouth and the M271 for Southampton docks to please him. I stayed in the lane so he cut around me on the right hand lane in lane 3 then deliberately cut me up with the length of the trailer almost taking the front wing off by cutting in close on me. As he was doing that an Audi A3 decided to swing from the left to the right across the M3 junction where it divides the two M27 directions up and the pair nearly clapped in the middle. I held back and watched the fun. Swearing, middle fingers, brake testing, air horns, the Audi did me a favour. Not many times I wish bad things upon my fellow DigiTacho users but he deserved it. The Polish truck driver treated me as if I am an average worthless little 'Car' but didn't realise I am also a professional CPC holder and driver. He was also towing a trailer with Polish plates on the tractor and UK plates on the trailer.
My Dad said to me when i was a young man, “Son” he said “Son, if you presume everyone else on th road is an idiot, you won’t go far wrong” and do you know what, best advice ever!! 🤣
@@williamgardner2739 And furthermore, accept that you never know everything and that every day is a learning opportunity on the road. Also, if you are a better driver, then use your additional skills to think for those less fortunate and avoid situations. :)
I do not understand how people can drive that close to another car or lorry, especially a lorry. Maybe I'm odd but I like to hang further back from lorries so I can see down the side of the lorry and see ahead.
As an ex class 1 ADR driver I absolutely 100% completely agree with you, my old instructor when I first started learning to drive cars said something that stuck with me forever, he said, “when you’re driving just remember that everyone else is complete and utter dickhead that will do whatever it takes to ruin your day, so that means you have to anticipate what drivers could possibly do 10 vehicles away in every direction and be ready to avoid them safely”. That’s stayed with me through my entire military driving career and saved my life once or twice too, when you see some of the people on the roads today you wonder how the hell they have a license in most cases. I’m no longer on the roads but, I don’t envy you heavy hauler boy having to deal with these idiots nowadays. Stay safe driver and keep ya head on a swivel 👍🇬🇧
I’d love to be able to thank my car and m/cycle instructors and let them know they saved my life many times over. Thank you Mr Starbuck of Nottingham. So thorough I can still hear his voice as I drive through hazards. One thing that he said that stays with me is ‘He’s forgotten that he was a learner driver once!’ He’d say this whenever another driver got impatient. It comes back to me whenever I’m following a learners and I just hang back a good distance so they don’t get freaked.
It's amazing how many clueless car and van drivers get wound up when you split lanes thinking that your hogging the road when you're actually trying to prevent an accident because your trailer will swing out and catch them or they will end up on your front bumper
When my dad taught me to drive over fifty years ago he said there are only two rules in driving ,treat everyone else as an idiot and don’t drive where you can’t see ,it’s done me well!
Now let's talk about the genius truck drivers who drive 90.5 km/h and take over other trucks driving 90 km/h, blocking two-lane highways for 20 minutes for everyone else. Just to arrive at the next truck stop 45 seconds earlier. Happens all the time in Germany, for example. I think this behavior has a measurable impact on the gdp in terms of wasting everyone's time and causing traffic jams for no feckin reason
Interesting to see how the other side lives! Motorcyclists are taught to consider all car drivers incompetent, resentful and distracted fools. Interesting that HGV drivers agree!
This is quality. Way better attitude than most dash cam channels. One example I use is that one day someone in front of you will stop for no apparent reason. It’s up to you how close you are to them. I think most people just think “well they shouldn’t be stopping”. I’ve used that roundabout a lot and generally everyone is usually good but you’ve got to be ready just incase.
Can you post one where on a dual carriageway one truck driver is doing 49mph, and another overtakes him at 49.5mph, and 20 miles later he just gets past
As a lorry driver myself if a another lorry is going to overtake me I slow down. So he can get past me quickly and not hold up the traffic. Problem is there are to many arsehead lorry drivers who don t do the same. Sorry for there ignorance.
I'm glad someone actually acknowledges the state of our roads. I work in Birmingham.. accessing the M6 toward Coventry (Lane 2 exit) is a pig, every car uses lane 3 to cut in at the last second (signs for over a mile), all lanes come to a stop at that point...selfish people who cause mayhem every day
Truck drivers on phones. I second that! Only a couple of days ago I was a passenger on a long distance bus, and as we drew alongside a big truck (on the motorway, at speed), I was sat at about the same level as the truck driver, and I watched him as he regularly took 1hand off the wheel to type messages on his phone in it's dashboard holder, and kept turning to look at his phone.
@@martinsims1273I'm always tempted to take a picture and send it to the police when i see that. They don't take lorry drivers on their phones lightly.
And lorry drivers think that indicators gives them the right to change lanes. Wrong. It is signalling your intention, so wait until a gap appears instead of trying to force a car off the road that is overtaking you. Simples.
And car and van drivers that think it's perfectly acceptable that when they overtake a hgv to cut in front of it drastically reducing the hgvs stopping distance, instead of staying in the lane they were in, or cutting across at the very last second to come off at a motorway junction, invariably not just one car doing this on a motorway but lots of them following each other, despite having warning signs a mile back. Alot of car drivers have no idea of their atrocious driving because they've never seen it from our view point. Whereas truck drivers obviously drive cars as well, so we get the car drivers view point as well. Please don't think I'm looking at truck drivers with rose tinted specs either, as I'm fully aware there are some right dick heads out there, who don't care about any other drivers, in cars or trucks. This is either down to bad training and/or being overworked by an uncaring and unknowing management.
I drive coaches, completely concur with all that's been said! I'd just like to mention to the car drivers, blind spots! On both trucks and coaches, they're huge! You may think the driver is being a bully when, in fact, they probably haven't even seen you!!!!
I had a hgv for 30 years, I finally had enough 2 years ago, too much road rage, road works, congestion, and in cab technology beeping and buzzing at you...
As an HGV1 thirty years ago I got £15.50p per hour for 40 hours. O/T time and a half. Sunday double time. Now? £13.00 per hour. The living standards of working people have destroyed over the last 30 years
I have a substantial history of driving, though not artics. Total respect for you guys, I'm certainly to old to have the patience to do it now. My neighbour got her 1st car the other day and said her teacher told her to consider everyone else to be stupid. I answered that I have never done that, I always consider everyone, including myself, to be about to make a mistake. That way for one, if you make a mistake yourself you're more ready for it, and two, if someone else makes a mistake it doesn't annoy you so much, and it's easier to keep smiling.
Unfortunately not all HGV drivers are so considerate, experienced and mindful. I was run off the road on a roundabout by a HGV who decided that he was going to have the inside lane (cut me up) regardless of the fact that my car was already in that lane (correctly). Luckily I could mount the grassy area of the roundabout just before the bridge holding the flyover in place, managed to stop my car in time and I was being followed by my partner who witnessed the event.
Brilliant posting! excellent advice, I agree 100%. I always have huge respect for LGV / HGV drivers. I doubt if I could drive something as long / heavy/ potentially dangerous as that. Respect guys!
With training you probably could do it, it’s not for everyone as it’s a totally different way of driving compared to a car but with practice & experience you would be amazed how accomplished you would be. Trucks are so much safer now & mostly auto boxes i think?
I'm on that road regularly and have seen numerous accidents at the roundabout, unfortunately often involving trucks!! Be safe and considerate everyone.
@@stevendavis7079 I was offered training to get my class 2 but couldn't be arsed. Doesn't really interest me now looking back I should of done a trade as these jobs are all dead end regardless.
It always makes me laff when people think truckers are on big money, those that are generally work nearly twice as many hours as a person with a 9 to 5 job, and away all week so when you actually break it down most are on piss poor wages sorry to say and yes i drive an artic for a living 😐
Totally agree. I think the same in my car ...ie everyone is out to hit you. That way I think for them and avoid things beforehand. Respect to you in that huge thing.. Portsmouth UK.
I took my driving test in the 70s in West Germany in a LWB Land Rover. My examiner said, "You've passed but , you're a little bit cautious. You drive as though everyone else on the road is out to kill you." I replied; "Are you saying they're not?" His response? "Fair point."
Treating everyone else on the road as a twat has done me no harm for 30 years on the road - in fact its an increasingly accurate statement. I have never driven a HGV but like yourself I'm always looking several hundred yards ahead of me so if a situation is developing i have time to react in a way that doesn't end in the inattentive driver behind smashing into the back of me.
Nope. Not where I work. £49,700 is a flat 40 hour week. Home to bed every night. We've also got drivers who do nights out up to Scotland. They're anywhere from £65-75K but that's still not enough for me to go tramping.

Fifty grand a year?! Who the hell you working for? HGV driving is not the good earner it used to be and I don't know any trucker earning that much, 30- 35 grand if they're lucky and doing stupid hours with no social or family life, poor physical and mental health
@Iamwangdong I am a retired fuel tanker driver. 5 years ago most jobs were 40k plus. You can't just work days for Hoyer. You have to follow their shift pattern. Their drivers are on a lot more than 37k.
Rules of driving safely by a self taught learner. 1, Assume nobody knows what they are doing ( be as obvious as possible!) 2, Always command your space and then keep twice the amount of space. 3, let people do their thing. If they intrude on you, create space again and carry on. 4, if you can't see them, assume they havent seen you.
When I was learning to driver hgvs my instructor told me everybody makes mistakes that doesn’t give you the right to kill them. And as a truck driver I’d say 2% is me driving the truck. 98% of it is me trying to protect other people from their stupid decisions. And that caravan is prime example. Good video mate.❤
I'm 40, and passed in Army. Been driving commercially since 2009. I do enjoy watching your videos with analysis of other drivers etc. I know i might only have 15 years compared to the big lads, i caught the back end of the knock overs or thumb switch manuals AND the paper tachos (frisbees) and i'm glad i did, vital in my eyes! But even now i'm still learning, you always learn. Drivers attitudes change and unfortunately so do the road rules, and never in a HGV drivers favour. Appreciate your videos mucker. Thanks
Spot on. Have been driving HGVs 40 years next year. This is our daily experiece on the roads of the UK. The standard of driving is getting worse. Treating others like twats is the only way i am sorry to say
Its nice to see an HGV driver driving with a bit of commen sence .90 % of so called professional drivers are worse than anything you have just highlighted .They are always in a rush ,and bully anything in there way .
90% are bad according to you? Oh please stop talking out your arse, the majority have more driving ability in their little finger than you posses in your entire body.
When driving something as large as a truck n trailer you get a great view of all the other road users . Sadly it's the best way to treat everybody as he says mainly in my opinion as majority of them have no clue in the difference of size and road requirements. I ride a motorcycle and I treat everybody else with the mind set they want me as a bonnet ornament .. it has come in good stead a few times as most think your bloody invisible. Or as with the trucker they don't exist on the little cars road .... thanks to the guys on the roads doing this job ..
No idea where I could earn 50k driving HGV1 you must be working all the hours possible to achieve that figure! In 39 years HGV1 driving never been anywhere near that. It’s not rocket science driving articulated vehicles I’d go as far as to say once a person becomes experienced it’s no harder than driving a car
Agreed , most tradesmen don’t even get that and they really do have to work for there money , something far wrong if your getting 50 k a year driving lorries
Yes, the standard of driving on UK roads is LITERALLY SHOCKING (especially in relation to tailgating)!!! It's as though the masses have a death-wish - not just for themselves, but for others around them too!!! It's mind-boggling!!! They should NOT BE ALLOWED anywhere near a vehicle unless they can stop their CRAP driving and behave like responsible adults!!!
I drive an ambulance, and can confirm that a huge number of people are twats. The vast majority don't do it on purpose (though there does seem to be a tiny minority of do), they just don't know how to react when they see blue lights behind them (or more accurately they don't see cos they never check their mirrors and can't seem to hear the sirens). You try not to get angry cos you have to remain calm cos at the end of the run you've got a patient to look after, but some drivers surely test your patience.
As a kid i grew up around hgvs and i guess that really helped me when i started to drive. Definitely though are way to many twats on the roads and alway make life difficult and be the 1st to complain when there delivery is late or a shop don't have something they want. If practical to do so I'll always give way to a hgv and make life as easy for them especially when I'm in a car.
Great mindset, i been driving my car for the last 17 years and treating everyone as an idiot helps a lot, because eventually you do and you are ready to react. But with respect as well as you said they could be lovely people and we all make mistakes. Love how high you are in a HGV the view must be amazing. Maybe ill try it one day as an experience day.
I do a few things, but the thing I do best is drive. I don't drive a HGV, just a small van, but I am really good at it. I stick to the law, the limits, and have really good anticipation skills. I've been driving 47 years, and the one thing that people remark on is that I never get road rage. There's a reason for this... I think 95% of all the people I meet in life are complete twats, so when I am on the road, I expect that to remain the same - hence I'm never surprised at what they do.

I was a HGV driver for 35yrs and in all that time I never meet a driver that was on 50k a Yr.
Great video mate

An you wonder why there is a shortage who an why would you won’t to do this job 🤔
Full credit to this Hgv driver an his mannerisms well done you there’s not many of us left
There's no shortage and many of them are terrible drivers but many are good. I think they've improved lately mainly because of better driver training.
I was always taught to treat everyone on the road as a total idiot until they prove otherwise!
My Dad said to me when i was a young man, “Son” he said “Son, if you presume everyone else on th road is an idiot, you won’t go far wrong” and do you know what, best advice ever!! 🤣
Yes that`s true as long as you don`t put yourself on the idiot list.
@@williamgardner2739 And furthermore, accept that you never know everything and that every day is a learning opportunity on the road. Also, if you are a better driver, then use your additional skills to think for those less fortunate and avoid situations. :)
Well said Barry.
My father 50 years ago god rest his soul. " 50% of driving is anticipation, anticipate what the other twat might do"
I do not understand how people can drive that close to another car or lorry, especially a lorry.
If we all drove as if we were trying to be as nice as possible that’d be great, but instead it’s like some kind of secret race that everyone is in on.
Ive been a class one driver for 40 years and for some big companies too , don't know where people get the £50k from because I've never got it
Good video, good driving, good chat. thanks mate
I have done in this short clip
ruclips.net/video/vF2dvnsh8kk/видео.html
😂
I'm glad someone actually acknowledges the state of our roads. I work in Birmingham.. accessing the M6 toward Coventry (Lane 2 exit) is a pig, every car uses lane 3 to cut in at the last second (signs for over a mile), all lanes come to a stop at that point...selfish people who cause mayhem every day
I drove buses in Manchester for nearly 8 years. I love your video.
Thank you very much!
@@ChattingWithMeHGV it was drummed into us to keep in lane. I’m retired and still drive my car like a bus 😜
That skip driver must have been on a promise
I use the motorways all day every day. I’m amazed at how close trucks drive to the vehicles in front. And truck drivers on phones? I see so many…..
NA63 GZP must have forgotten he was towing a caravan!!
You’ve never sat behind the wheel of a 44 tonne truck, so sit down. Simples.
Me and you both Richard I've had over 40 years of it , glad I'm out of now , used to be a good crack but not any more
As an HGV1 thirty years ago I got £15.50p per hour for 40 hours.
Sounds like the hgv didn't have enough space to make the turn. They should have waited.
I get paid the same to look busy in an office
I'm on that road regularly and have seen numerous accidents at the roundabout, unfortunately often involving trucks!! Be safe and considerate everyone.
Clearly the rates have gone up then. Drove artics for 15 years for £10 per hour. Its why I dont drive them now
£10 per hour 😂 I'm paid more emptying bins.

I took my driving test in the 70s in West Germany in a LWB Land Rover. My examiner said, "You've passed but , you're a little bit cautious. You drive as though everyone else on the road is out to kill you." I replied; "Are you saying they're not?" His response? "Fair point."
You sound like your from a 1970s bus training program that was shown on the bbc , very professional
I must say i found this ironic considering the way most HGV's travel in convoy a few feet apart.

Got the right idea, not always well expressed but he has the basis of advanced driving.
Had me HGV 30 odd years yet to get any where near 50k
Treating everyone else on the road as a twat has done me no harm for 30 years on the road - in fact its an increasingly accurate statement. I have never driven a HGV but like yourself I'm always looking several hundred yards ahead of me so if a situation is developing i have time to react in a way that doesn't end in the inattentive driver behind smashing into the back of me.
50k has to take into account of night out payments and bonuses. Basic pay is pretty shite.
Nope. Not where I work. £49,700 is a flat 40 hour week. Home to bed every night. We've also got drivers who do nights out up to Scotland. They're anywhere from £65-75K but that's still not enough for me to go tramping.

Rules of driving safely by a self taught learner.
1, Assume nobody knows what they are doing ( be as obvious as possible!)
2, Always command your space and then keep twice the amount of space.
3, let people do their thing. If they intrude on you, create space again and carry on.
4, if you can't see them, assume they havent seen you.
Indeed.
50k in a dream when asleep after an 80 hour week.
Thanks
Not all hgv drivers earn 50k. My husband earns a lot less and with the hours he works it most probably works out below minimum wage.
He needs to change job then
He either is a absolute mug or you guys live up the sticks.. 😂
Great commentary drive, sensible sense of humour and my 100% agreement to the statements.
Spot on. Have been driving HGVs 40 years next year. This is our daily experiece on the roads of the UK. The standard of driving is getting worse. Treating others like twats is the only way i am sorry to say
i work for a parcel company driving class one on a day shift , and if i was being paid 50k a year i'd think i was worth every penny
Its nice to see an HGV driver driving with a bit of commen sence .90 % of so called professional drivers are worse than anything you have just highlighted .They are always in a rush ,and bully anything in there way .
That's a good point. There are a few BAD truck drivers out there.
These days it’s near impossible. As soon as u get your hgv licence there’s only 1% of companies willing to hire
Agreed , most tradesmen don’t even get that and they really do have to work for there money , something far wrong if your getting 50 k a year driving lorries

Yes, the standard of driving on UK roads is LITERALLY SHOCKING (especially in relation to tailgating)!!! Yeah they should make the test way harder, there’s too many idiots on the road
@@lolitapitpong3826 AGREED!!
“You’ve just gotta have that mindset that, everybody else around ya, is a complete twat.”
Good advice.
It’s called Defensive Driving over here in the USA. Unfortunately they don’t teach it enough anymore.
As a biker I also think the same, every other driver is a twat wanting to kill me.
It does say in the Highway Code to drive defensively- so there’s some truth there! 😂
I totally agree
It's like riding a motorbike in London. Always ride like everyone is trying to knock you off your bike... 😆
