Awww!! My cousin found an abandoned King Shepherd in the desert. He's a BIG dog, weighs 155lbs. No one could figure out his breed until I saw this video.... He is the most gentle giant ever! Also a very thoughtful dog. Good on you for rescuing a dog!

Went to local rescue to get a companion for my older Golden Retriever mix. Found a awesome GSD who was terrified of all the noise, etc at the shelter. She was abt 4yo & weighed abt 95#. Since supplying her with quality food, she grew 4" taller & now weighs in at 115#. Her temperament wasn't normal for a GSD. After watching your video, had her DNA done. What do you know, she's actually a King Shepherd. She's one of the best dogs I've ever had...very mellow & loves almost everyone. I'm now trainer her to be a service dog for myself. Love this dog😍.

My king shepherd weighs 80kg (around 170lb) and this video describes him perfectly. He's very, very protective of his home and family, but away from his domain he's everybody's friend. He also sheds around 2kg (or so it feels) of hair every day.

I have a 130lb shorthair male. I always thought he was a bit too big to be a straight German Shepard. We rescued him around 2 years old. He’s such a sweet and gentle dog but being that he wasn’t socialized, it doesn’t seem that way when he first meets you. He’ll bark and bark and seems super intimidating but when he realizes that you’re friendly, he’ll be your best friend and bring you his tennis ball. Then you are IN. He’s never even come close to biting anyone and is amazing around cats and kids..but strangers don’t know that lol.
I would get another king in a heartbeat

I had a 130-pound male (who wasn't mixed) growing up. Everyone thought my mom gave him steroids, he ended up being the biggest in the litter and larger than his father who was 110-pounds. Pure muscle. It was nuts. I could walk him at night and people would cross the street to avoid me. I felt protected with him. It is rare to find one that big without it being mixed. He lived to be 13 years old.

When I was a student and worked at a Pet Store in animal care we also provided weekend kennel service/walking. Someone brought in a huge GS, a female named Donna. She was 130lbs and not mixed...black/tan color. But she couldn't be walked with males because the owner said ever since a man broke into her apartment she would bite all men. Biggest GS I'd ever seen live...my grandparents had a black GS named buster aroud 80lbs and I thought he was huge at the time!

The Kings can be beautiful and wonderful dogs as I have found out through ownership. They are the best Guard dogs one could ask for due to temperament and intelligence as well as size, I own a male and a female and I couldn't love them more, but what my wife calls my "Shadow Dog" is a male GSD by the name of Thor who is a few years older than the other two, he runs things and goes with me everywhere, sleeping at the foot of bed while the twins camp out outside the rooms of my children. After a while, weaning the pups, I kept the black and sable pair (Kotey & Kloey) twins till they reached full adult (around 3yrs)...great pair of this breed very trainable. Both were as big as the video states, maintenance, strict diet and exercise is a must for a healthy lifespan. Would recommend, good with families/children also.

Standard working class bloodline GSDs imported from Germany average between 100 to 120 pounds. At least the ones my breeder gets and sells. Most go to police, fire departments, search and rescue, and stuff like that, but we get them as family dogs.
0 genetic issues. Sub 1% inbreeding.
No slant backs, no hip issues. They all have straight backs.
Best dogs I've ever had. Fun, loving, great protectors and guard dogs. And great for working.
I swear they can understand you when you're talking to them.
Once you go GSD you'll never go back to any other breed.

Stupid statement. Eastern Bloc dogs are no bigger than other lines. The biggest differences are that the Eastern Bloc dogs are bred for health, and working ability. Before you spout off, I have been working with and training working dogs for almost 25 years. I have also been on buy trips to Europe and have seen many different dogs from many different breeders.

I had one in Australia in the early eighties. They were bred by a german shepherd breeder and he called them Kanuks. German Shepherd crossed with malamute and akitas in the mix by 3rd generation. A beautiful loyal strong dog. The breader was a top dog trainer high up in the german shepherd club. he was kicked out for crossing shepherds what he wanted was the ultimate fighting dog which didnt go down to well with club members. My dog was super friendly with other dogs but if a dog had a go at him he would allways finish it quickly.

Six weeks ago adopted a very cute 4 month old German Shepherd with a very long tail, only to find out later on that he’s a King Shepherd. He’s now 5 1/2 months old and already weighing in at 61 1/2 pounds. He's gaining size and weight like crazy. He's only about 2 1/2 inches shorter than our nine-year-old German Shepherd.
Thankfully he has a short coat. We were told that our Puppy's dad & mom were pretty big, dad is 173 pounds and mom is 131 pounds...

My King Shepherd is short haired. She's mixed, according to her DNA, part GSD & part Swiss Mountain dog. She's now approx 5 yo & looks like a really big GSD (coloring, head, magnificent ears). But she is more even tempered & gentle. Loves all ppl & animals, unless they give her a bad vibe. However, doesn't have the sloped back end; stands more securely like the Swiss Mtn dog. Hopefully, this will prevent her from having hip dysplasia later in life. Not all King Shepherds are long haired.

@@harshitdabas1551 adopt and shop responsibly. Getting a dog from a breeder can be a good option and help find the perfect dog for your family. Like if you want a sports dog, service dog, therapy dog, etc. you might want to make sure they have good health guarantees that you'd know from the parents and all the ancestors having multiple health tests. Plus temperament is a big factor and puppies definitely can take after their parents which is why looking for a breeder a person might want to meet the puppies parents. Rescue dogs can be great but also aren't for everyone. Not everyone is able to accommodate a dog with issues that they are unaware of like if they have young kids and need to know a dog that will be good with kids.
Trust me I'm all for adopting. My mom has 4 rescue dogs at home and they are amazing and I love them. Personally though for my first dog I'm getting from a breeder so I have a base knowledge and experience with dogs before rescuing one that might need extra help and training.

Just FYI for anybody watching this video, a working line German Shepherd primarily comes in Black Sable, Sable, solid black, or bicolor. Some come in black and tan but it's not as common and Sables is the dominant color. Sable is also known as wolf gray and comes from the agouti locus directly from the wolf. The Sable colored dog taking a bath was a working line purebred German Shepherd and not a king shepherd. I say this only because a lot of people that see Sable working line German Shepherds don't recognize them and think they might be a husky mix because they're not familiar with a working line German Shepherd. Show line or pet line German Shepherds usually come in black and red or black and tan with a rare few coming in solid black. However, working line purebred German Shepherds predominately come in Sable or solid black. Just wanted to clear that up. A working line German Shepherd is practically a different breed from a show or a pet line German Shepherd, they tend to be much healthier, and have completely different coloring

Don't expect him not to want to be around you 24 hours a day, a large dog crate can be your best friend and his "safe place", not a punishment. Good luck, there's no better friend you could ever get, owner of 5 through the years.

People kept commenting on how huge my GSD was, saying he must be mixed with a bigger breed, but nope. The rescue ranch (family abandoned him 😢) put him at 2 years due to size & 92# weight. Vet, Service Dog Trainer & others said he was not even a year when I adopted him & also underweight! He grew tremendously in the next few months. He is now about 18 months & 126 lbs. Duke is a gentle giant & I adore him & his soft, sweet but protective personality, different from others I had in the past who were working line.

Order a Embark or Wisdom panel DNA test from Amazon. If it comes back with any percentage over 15% of the large breeds (Great Pyrenees, Malamute, Akita, etc) then you know for certain it was bred to be a King Shepherd. I believe these tests can go back up to 3 generations.

Most health problems of the GSD are from show breed, not from the working dog breed. The show breed has a sloped back which causes hip displacia, this is not an issue with the straight back working breed. I have a 1 year old working class GSD, he is one of the most loyal dogs I have ever owned.

Spot on. I got my first GSD in 1968 when the breed standard had a much straighter back and better placement of the hind legs. Over the space of a few decades the physical profile of the breed has been ruined. It's only the working breed lines that keep the original breed alive.

I have a king shepherd and lab mix, he was smaller than his brothers and sisters, and the only one out of all of them to have a short coat, similar to a lab, but it’s really slim, and has a long thick, but still not furry tail, and very long ears, that are literally like a 1/3 his head size, he is only 4 months old, so we’ll see what changes, but he’s very energetic, yet doesn’t like to go on walks, chills in water, can eat non-stop if he had the opportunity, loves to lay with you, but still wants his space, so he’ll eventually get up and lay a little further from your feet, sometimes he’ll randomly get a burst of energy and run around the house and then proceed to jump on my bedroom door to try to knock it down like a small swat dog, man, I love this little guy

King shepherd isn’t a breed. Just working line German shepherd or show line german shepherd. Just because someone cross bred their dogs and got a dog that was german shepherd dominant with its genetics and looks doesn’t mean it’s a new breed. Just because you have a bigger german shepherd doesn’t mean it’s a king because that’s not a thing. Most of the people who say they have a gsd that’s over 100 lbs usually have a fat dog nothing more than that. And some in this video didn’t look larger than normal other than their width(fat)

I have had two King Sheppards, the first named Marko, he was enormous, an real friend voor anyone, but don't make wrong movements to one of the kids, he bite.
He died at the age of 14.
In the summer we left the backdoor open when we went to sleep, Marko did his job perfect.
Then i had a German sheppard, Cissy, a female, she was friendly, she had just one bad thing,,... she didn't like the sound from police, ambulance or the firetrucks.
She died at the age of 11.
Then came Tessa, a King Sheppard, she was a big funny dog, she was an very fine dog, my two year old grandson was her biggest friend, Tessa could play the whole day with him.
She died at the age of 13, two years ago.
The King Sheppard or the German sheppard, both fine dogs, they are friendly and good for the family, only the King Sheppard is stronger and much bigger.
But,,... there are also German Sheppards with long hair, that is the Old German Sheppard, many people think they have a King Sheppard, that is a mistake.
When you have seen or owned once a King Sheppard,... you never forget the size, they are really big.
One last comment,.. when you have a King Sheppard,.. take it with you in the village for a walk, you have plenty of room,... nobody is blocking your way.

Well this answers a question for me. I have the most wonderful, beautiful friendly and loving shepherd, but he is so much bigger than other shepherds. He is about 115 lbs. Blonde/black and tan, long hair, very protective and super friendly. I have no idea what he would do if someone would try to hurt us, but I really feel like he would protect. He is a little strange though and has cost me a good bit of money. He loves to bite tires and I have had to put 6 on my vehicles. oh, and he loves licking tail pipes. So far it hasn't hurt him, but we make him stop. He is gentle with the new puppy, and i have a 16 yo Jack Russell, he follows her around and guards her.

    • @ilirllukaci5345

Incidentally, the original German shepherds were a more heavy boned dog. My father as a child in German occupied Albania encountered these dogs and compared them to later examples.

    • @ilirllukaci5345
      @ilirllukaci5345 2 года назад

Dysplasia is terrible. When it affects a dog that is a member of your family it is tragic. But here again, I suspect it relates to the evolution from the heavy boned breed to the modern one.
I must admit, it may be a matter of taste, but I would hate to take the "aloofness" out of the breed. In the case of the German shepherd, it is not a neurotic or fussy brand of aloofness, it is come by honestly.
